Love your reaction - especially that you appreciate all of the little touches that make this performance absolute PERFECTION. The subtle way she adapts the style of movement to fit the era is exquisite. I also love seeing a younger gay man going backwards to see this stuff. If this impacts you this much now, imagine what this was like 27 years ago! This was the latest in a long string of Madonna doing things that no one had even come close to doing in pop culture. She raised the bar over and over. And this is a whole new floor.

I have loved this performance since MTV aired it live in 1990. M is the queen and her team at the time included director and choreographic genius Vincent Paterson. He created the entire Marie Antoinette concept, direction and choreography for this iconic performance and he rarely receives proper credit he deserves. So I felt compelled to share it with you. First of all.. It's so early in the morning and I've just woken up to see your reaction to this iconic performance. I can't believe you've never witnessed this and I'm so glad I've seen your first watch with you. 4th. I was 17 when this performance was done.. Moving on. 5th. I'm so thrilled that you so the slight cock up when he stood on her dress and she managed the snatch it away so quickly.. I don't think many people have ever noticed that. 6th. Well worth the wait!! Loved every one of where you stopped the clip. The little nuances that would’ve been missed otherwise. I’ve watched it a million times, including it’s original air date and each time, I love it even more. These rehearsals must have been fierce! But my goodness, how they pay off. If this performance has the capacity to blow away someone's mind TODAY (2019), just imagine what it was like for the audience back then in 1990. That is the reason you see them standing up but at the same time standing still. They were in ABSOULTE AWE. Back then they COULD NOT BELIEVE their eyes or even fully COMPRHEND what they were watching, as NOTHING like this had been done before.
This song was already a MASSIVE HIT when it was announced Madonna would peform it at the VMAs, so the expectation and anticipation were OFF THE CHARTS HIGH, but no one absolutely NO ONE could have guessed she would serve them this MASTERFULL recreation of a 17 hundreds Ball Room dance, fully dressed as Marie Antoinette while VOGUING. Believe me: The brains of those people you see in the front row, were trying to PROCESS IT. #BestVMApeformanceEVER

OMG I didn't know you hadn't seen it before! Isn't it epic? I remember seeing it when it was happening live and everyone was so excited to see this performance! We were all waiting for it because when Vogue was nominated she didn't come out but I think it only got best Direction at the time. So no one had seen her in the audience so it was the biggest reveal ever! My favorite MTV performance is Express Yourself the year before but this one is probably my second favorite!

omg i loved seeing your reactions to all of the amazing details. i have watched this performance probably hundreds of times over the course of my life (i'm 41) and it still gives me chills! i have to admit, sometimes lately in this post-Confessions era, i have to be reminded of what a fucking legend she is, and watching this is the reminder i needed. i live for this performance... one of her greatest live performances if not one of the best live performances in all of pop music, ever. period. the children need to be educated!
you mentioned that your pre-Ray of Light knowledge is a bit hazy... does that mean you've never seen the Blonde Ambition tour in it's entirety? you need to watch that... the recording that was broadcast on HBO (the one where she has short hair, and not the high tight pony) is the best version and you can find it easily here on youtube. i'd love to see you make a reaction video for that!

Watching LIVE I remember the buzz that she had something amazing planned but after the express yourself performance we couldn’t imagine what could top that until we saw the stage and then the appearance.
