  • The second point of Peak Design's six-point mission statement, nestled right behind "make the best things," is "succeed at the expense of nobody." The recent certification of Peak Design's soft goods manufacturing facilities as Fair Trade Certified is a massive achievement in following through on that mission point.
Come along with the Peak Design team to Vietnam and the Philippines to meet the incredible folks who make these bags, and learn what Fair Trade certification means for these highly-skilled workers.

It's an important factor in the selling process and knowing that we are part of a bigger community and helping with that overall mission! Go Peak Design!

This is so good to know! Thank you for being great humans treating others with dignity and respect! I love all my peak design gear and to know that the folks who make them are getting treated fair and able to live better makes me very happy. One thing I thought was so true is when Adriaan Kwon said that if the workers are happy making the product, the product will have a happy soul. That is good such good Ju Ju!! ❤❤❤

I've been a proud Peak Design customer since 2018 and I easily own and regularly use over a dozen PD products. This video made me feel even prouder to be a PD customer -- it is really amazing to see the intentionality and joy that goes into something that brings so much joy into my daily life. Thank you to everyone who has touched by bags and accessories, I'm going to think of all of you each time I use them going forward!!

I asked what he thought of his and he said he has lots of PD bags, has traveled all over the world, and will never buy anything else. I am feeling the same way! Thank you.

Thank you! I laughed a lot and cried a little. Usually I feel very bad, living in the west, economically exploiting people in India or Asia. I don't feel like a hero now, but I see, that it really makes a difference where I buy goods and you are true heros to go the extra mile (veeery long mile). My favorite quote is from the AJ-CEO “If the worker produces another product with happiness, the product will have a good happy soul”. I am not a “good customer”-I backed one of the first messanger bags and as it is still holding up good, there were only minor purchases since. I can agree 100 %, that you can feel the energy and happiness that people put into a product. So again, thank you :-)

fair trade is all around good vibes! Good on the workers to get better wages, good on peak design for getting their factory workers to care about the product, good on peak design’s marketing department to improve brand image, and good on customer to feel good about their purchase and the story behind the product. Literally nobody loses!

Great company. Great designs, Great products. I have been a PD fan boy since I got my first tri-pod from them years ago. I have gone all in across the whole ecosystem and have indoctrinated my family as well. The design goes beyond the product itself, but extends to the packaging and thoughtfulness on reducing waist. I love the seeing you make such great products, building a great company, yet still been socially responsible. I will be a customer for life.

Without question the BEST MOUNT system in the world. NO CONTEST. I've tried just about every mount system you can imagine; too awkward to put on/take off, too bulky, NOT SECURE (bye bye phone), NOT strong enough (plastic breaks), ugly design etc. You name it. Peak Mount is CRAZY GOOD.

So I understand fair trade. Is it that expensive to help people in America to do what this is being done. So now most of my peak design is outside the USA. No get me wrong. I love all of my bags. I have lots of but when we need help in building things in the USA. Is it that expensive to make a plant here and train them to make them.

It’s a great idea and obviously I support a concept to pay more better place to work and better food and time off to be with family.. buuuuut
They go there because it’s cheap. If they were actually paying people a fair wage for their product then why not do it in America then all of a sudden you get the idea of well now you’re taking away from American jobs because you’re honestly paying $20 an hour which they are not doing it’s a very good way for your company to look good but still make your stuff pretty cheap, if it was true, fair trade, it would be made in the United States supporting people that need the jobs here not being a nitpicker or a little Nancy I’m just saying that it would be better if it was US made always

Hi Karl, we definitely understand where you're coming from here. As such, we asked our Head of Environmental and Social Impact to provide some context around why we use leather in a few products:
The use of leather is a topic we have discussed in depth over the last several years. We see two primary considerations in our decision: (1) our customer's feelings around leather and (2) the environmental impact of leather.
Addressing the first, while there are customers, like yourself, who disagree with our use of leather, many of our customers love leather and we want to provide for both groups. We do feel we need a better balance of products with leather accents versus without and are transitioning to more no-leather options. While we haven’t found high-quality faux leather alternatives, we continue researching our options. We also use leather that is a byproduct of meat manufacturing.
Additionally, our sustainability philosophy is based on designing products that not only last a long time but are actually used for a long time. Products using materials that look better with age (like leather) will stay in use longer than materials that deteriorate with age. People are emotionally attached to and proud of their aged leather products which can’t always be said for synthetic materials. The longer we keep our products in play, the less of an impact we have.
Our second consideration is the environmental impact of leather. Leather processing can and often does have an outsized environmental impact than other materials specifically in regard to water use and treatment, chemical use, and carbon footprint. Because of this, a group called the Leather Working Group was formed to develop a way to audit and score leather suppliers on their environmental impact.
The original Environmental Audit Protocol was developed by brands and leather manufacturers, with input from NGO’s such as WWF and Greenpeace. Suppliers are scored on a large array of factors from material traceability, water and waste management, and energy use (the full protocol can be found here). Peak Design only sources from Gold-rated facilities which means our suppliers meet the highest standards possible. We also intentionally use only a very small amount of leather in our products.
While we know this is unlikely to change your opinion about the use of leather, we hope it provides some insight into our decision-making. This is certainly an issue we will continue researching and discussing and we greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts.

@@peakdesignvideo super interesting thought process, expect nothing less from you guys regarding details like this. I also admire that you guys choose to engage rather than ignore comments like the person above. Just a thought which maybe doesn't make sense from a business standpoint... I'm personally someone who does use some leather products in general, but I do have most of my products from you guys in black, which I believe tends to be the 'vegan' option of your bags? Could you guys offer more non-leather options, perhaps a natural lighter color way in addition to black that comes without leather? Maybe they wouldn't be as popular but it might be well received that 50% of the product's color options are leather free, rather than just one option.

    • @RekiFox
      @RekiFox 6 месяцев назад +1

@@peakdesignvideo I appreciate this detailed response, but it doesn’t address the biggest issue of there being a victim in the leather industry: the animal that skin once belonged to and everything that animal was put through just so someone can have some false sense of pride over a 2cm2 branded patch on your product. It is not wholly accurate to call the leather industry a waste byproduct of the slaughter industry, as explained in the documentary ‘Dominion’. It isn’t necessary to use leather, especially in Peak Design’s products where the leather is only on designated trimming/tags.
There is no justification for supporting the mass torture and murder of any sentient beings, let alone for such a small aesthetic choice.
