@blarfroer8066 Okay, I've changed it to 'almost entirely phonetic' 😄After getting into shows on Netflix during lockdown, I got really interested in the language and looked at a few websites. I was amazed how easy it was to pick up the very basics. When I was at primary school in the UK, they tried to move to teaching English phonetically but it really doesn't work because pronunciation doesn't match spelling a lot of the time (PH instead of F, silent K, silent GH when T would work fine (night or knight instead of nite)). The way the basics are presented in Korean seems a lot more logical and easier to grasp for a complete beginner. Every language has its exceptions, but Korea seems to have fewer WTF moments for learners.

I lived I in Korea for 3 years as a teenager and honestly Seoul is an amazing city. One of the things that always stuck with me is how safe Seoul is despite being a massive city. I used to go to bars with a couple friends and often we would at some point end up drunkenly singing with some random Korean people we met at the bar. Might be partially because it's 15 years ago and I was young but I remember Korea as being an absolutely amazing country. Also an incredibly beautiful country and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone considering going to Asia.
Depends on your gender. Living as a women in Korea is very unsafe, due to molca (spy camera installed in women's bathroom) and the police simply not caring about SA cases. But other than that, in terms of robbery/murders is pretty safe
@@acturusgarcia6027 that's probably a fair assessment. I've never had to worry about that as a man so it makes sense that I wouldn't have noticed. Especially since I was a teen and still ignorant of the problems women have to deal with.

It's fascinating to hear how Joey says little bits of Korean words. His pronunciation is really unique and more accurate compared to average foreigners, given that he doesn't speak the language. Must be coming from his multilingual/multicultural background.
It actually goes the other way too. As a Korean and English speaker (with native Gyeonggi/Standard Korean and Standard American pronunciation), I can pronounce most Japanese words. When you combine the two accents' phonemes (most basic units of sounds that you make when speaking), I really think you can be mistaken for a native so long as you're careful and don't speak for a long time. Since Standard Korean and Standard English aren't as 'wavery' when it comes to pitch as the Japanese you'd hear in Tokyo, that's the main barrier. But, for the most part, I've gotten complimented by Japanese people for my pronunciation (although they're probably being nice cause I know almost 0 vocab 😂). I definitely think Korean dialects like the Gyeongsangdo dialect (my grandma's!) would come a lot closer to how Japanese sounds than my own. But yeah, being multilingual almost 100% helps. Aussie English + whichever Japanese dialect he speaks (I'm not an expert, lol) means I can definitely tell he's closer than the vast majority of Australians and a bit better than most Japanese speakers (I can understand what most Japanese speakers say in Korean almost every single time, so long as there's no major grammatical or vocab issues).
Watching your vlog and Aki's made me miss Seoul so much. 😢 Also Gyeongbokgung is actually totally remade. In the Colonial era, the Japanese government built a building on top of the palace grounds. They tore that building down in the 90s to restore the palace. Only about seven of the original buildings on the grounds are original, including the outside pavilion and the Imperial Throne Hall. Also interesting that Aki brought up how she thought the area near Coex was more what she was thinking of when she thought of Seoul. The area you guys stayed in is the older part of Seoul, and where Coex is (Gangnam) is the newer part of the city.
The name on the tag on the crochet sleeves on the trees at 21:57 is Park YoungHee (I'm currently learning Korean so thanks for the practice!). Also cute to see things from your perspective after watching Aki's vlog! I'm glad you two had a cute time in Seoul and makes me want to visit there so much more!!
You should visit Hongdae next time you visit, buskers with live music and a really lively atmosphere! It's next to a university so the crowd is mostly young college aged people, but definitely good vibes all around!
23:30 Those are old beacon chimneys (built hundreds of years ago) for emergency smoke signals. There used to be more on a lot of the other mountains. If there was an invasion at the border, then the beacons would relay the smoke signals to the capital city. It was like how it was done in 'The Lord of the Rings' except the number of chimneys being used in each Korean beacon depended on the severity of the emergency.
I love Aki's watering pail, humor, and interactions. Thank you so much for this life with Aki video! Happy Birthday, Aki! You two are adorable :) Please feel free to make more videos of the two of you on adventures! This is my favorite one you've done thus far. :) Best to the both of you!

I was like, oh my god Joey you're visiting all the tourist traps, but then remembered that this is probably your and Aki's first trip to Seoul! I'm happy that you guys had a good time there. If you ever plan to visit again, I recommend looking for more places to visit! Seoul is a really complex city with different cultures co-existing together. I'm sure you'll have a blast discovering more about it! But I need to say this as a non-Seoulite, the Korean food in Seoul kinda sucks lol. This one, almost every Korean outside Seoul agrees.
@Death Claw if you have enough time, venture out of Seoul. Jeolla province is famous for having the best food. The city of Gyeongju has tons of Korean history.

Pretty cool! I visited the King Sejong statue and the same temple a few months ago as well. Fun fact: you can visit that temple for free if you wear a hanbok (traditional korean outfit). A bunch of places around it let you rent them. It really enhances the experience of visiting that temple.
These 72 hours videos have been great, man. Super unsustainable, but if you don't mind: keep it up. 😂 72 hours in Singapore, and Manila next? I just want to see food mostly. 🤤
Glad he can tell the Korean letters and able to pronounce the words, even tho u don't know what it means, as long as u can read out the words then it's an easy language to read
A couple of things, the knitting in the trees are to let pests to go into them during the winter….they remove it in the spring and burn them. The temple you went to, is not a temple, but a Palace, hence the guards.
Man it has been 14 years since I was last in Korea but seeing this made me miss all the Korean food. When I was stationed in Seoul I didn't care much for it but now I miss it.

Please come back to see some more interesting sites in Seoul (like the Lotte World Tower, IFC mall, The Hyundai mall and TONS of really good restaurants) and you must go to Busan and Jeju Island one day too! I'm sure you'll enjoy the beaches and the FOOD!
You did a good job pronouncing Myeongdong! Japanese and Korean pronounciations are pretty similar, so you'll have an easy time learning Korean! Korean is very phonetic, I've taught many people to read in an hour before- really is just memorizing the symbols to sounds!
You should learn Korean! Like you mentioned, the writing system is an alphabet, which makes it a lot easier to learn to read than Japanese (2 syllabaries and an ideography all mixed together) or English (technically an alphabet, but it's often more just guidelines), and the grammar is quite similar to Japanese! It has a similar particle system (different words, but the same concept), and a pretty large number of cognates from Chinese influence, too, and a similar way of changing conjugation based on formality. One little note, to go with the jal meogeosseumnida (잘 먹었습니다), "I ate well", equivalent to "gochisosamadeshita" that the nice Korean couple mentioned, there's also jal meoggesseumnida (잘 먹겠습니다), which literally means "I will eat well," and is the equivalent of "itadakimasu." Also, random pronunciation/transliteration note (because I'm weird and think this sort of thing is fun): "u" (ㅜ) is pronounced like American English "u," and "eu" (ㅡ) is pronounced like Japanese う.
Damn. I actually stayed at the same hotel before. Now I gotta go on my birthday. My birthday tradition was going to Marriott on my birthday in Yeongdeungpo just because if you get one of the rooms, the buffet for breakfast and dinner is free. But no special birthday stuff :(

Idk if I'm too late @crowjdh , but hopefully you liked it?
I love their relationship and interactions with each other! Always makes me smile!! 😁

Yeah
Watching your vlog and Aki's made me miss Seoul so much. 😢
Also Gyeongbokgung is actually totally remade.
I'm glad you enjoyed it man. Been there a lot of times for holiday and I haven't been able to go because of you, you know.
Oh man…that tteokbokki looks AMAZING. I’ve made it at home, but after my cancer treatment, I can’t eat by mouth yet. Now I’m craving it!!!
I hope you get well soon!
I love seeing your POV, Joey! I already saw Aki's, so, seeing yours was so nice! Thanks for sharing yours too!
Really enjoyed this vlog! So nice to see your experience in Korea!
It's appreciated that you bring us with you to something you didn't have to at all :) I hope that you two had a wonderful trip! It even made me consider checking out nearby countries for recommended places and food ^-^ 👌👌
This is so wonderful to see. :) I did a student exchange in Korea in 2017 and it's so nice to see you guys going to all the places that I would want to show other people
I was like, oh my god Joey you're visiting all the tourist traps, but then remembered that this is probably your and Aki's first trip to Seoul!
Can you recommend any places to visit that are non tourist traps? I am going soon and would appreciate some tips from someone who has been :)
@Death Claw if you have enough time, venture out of Seoul. Jeolla province is famous for having the best food. The city of Gyeongju has tons of Korean history.
looks like y'all had a fun time! Edit: I just had a vacation in Seoul in JAN, already planning my next trip. And yeah the view from the Namsan Tower is worth it when there isn't much fog, so you're right in saying to do it on the next trip.
Glad you guys enjoyed Korea! Very happy to hear as a Korean.
Happy birthday Aki! Lot of fun stuff you guys showed in this video. If that doctor character is kinda made after you, then just so you know, we have that medicine here in hungary as well. You are even on tv man. Take care.
72 hours in Singapore, and Manila next?
I just want to see food mostly. 🤤
16:21 Anybody else hears silence in this part?
Ok, I thought my device was glitching the video at that spot too 🤔
24:41 i love how i just notice the music video of txt sugar rush ride HAHAH, but damn the chicken looks so good ahhhhhh
Glad he can tell the Korean letters and able to pronounce the words, even tho u don't know what it means, as long as u can read out the words then it's an easy language to read
love how TXT is on in the background while you guys are eating fried chicken
A couple of things, the knitting in the trees are to let pests to go into them during the winter….they remove it in the spring and burn them.
The temple you went to, is not a temple, but a Palace, hence the guards.
Aki seems a little sleepy, happy belated Aki! Reward with many naps and new games.
Love to see a collab between Joey and Aki and the Korean Englishman channel, either in Korea or Tokyo (or both)
Man it has been 14 years since I was last in Korea but seeing this made me miss all the Korean food. When I was stationed in Seoul I didn't care much for it but now I miss it.
It's been about 15 years since I lived in Korea and I still regret not trying more of the food. Hard to find proper korean food in Denmark unfortunately.
stationed in korea? koreans are better off without you.
@@samuraijosh1595 why did you delete your comment, I promise it doesn't offend me. Koreans are better off without me though, however I had to listen to the government bc I have a job.
@@remforrest i have not deleted my comment. Maybe it's youtube censoring me. I stand by what I said.
@@samuraijosh1595 what did you say
I'm American but I've lived in Seoul for the past five years and it's so cool to see you both come visit here! I feel like Seoul is a really traveler friendly place. I speak Korean but I don't know much Japanese and when I went to Tokyo for the first time in January I was so overwhelmed by the fact that NOBODY spoke English haha. There are a lot of similarities between Seoul and Tokyo though so I feel like they're really comfortable to travel between. Next time you should check out Lotte World Tower (it's really similar to Tokyo SkyTree) if you want a good view of Seoul!
Excellent views from the top of Lotte World Tower! Loved that experience!
Loved the vlog. Always wanted to travel there but probably never will get to. So was refreshing to get this perspective experiencing Seoul, South Korea through you. Thank you!
I'm glad and happy for you Joey and Aki for enjoying your time here in Korea! As a Korean myself I can say you've been to great places to go during your stay in Seoul and especially trying and enjoying various Korean foods and street foods brings smile to me 😄
There are lots of regional foods that you should try out next time you come to Korea!
I too would love to see these guys try some more regional dishes - there are so many amazing foods to experience, both in and outside of Seoul!
this is so amazing, im going to seoul next month im so excited, so see this gives me more excitement.. yay. thank you joeyyy and akiii.
That all looked amazing!
Did anyone else notice the name of the shoe vacuum - I Seoul U? Small details... And happy belated birthday to you, Aki!! 🥳
I haven't been back in Korea in almost 7 years now and watching this reminded me how much I miss it. It was so cool to see you guys go to a shit ton of familiar places. Glad to hear you had a good time!
Those tree blankets are made by several volunteers to protect the trees from pests. The tag shows the name of the person that made it. (Park Yeong Hui) c:
My niece and I wanted to take a 2 day trip to Seoul when we planned to visit Japan before the pandemic hit. I've always wanted to try tteokbokki but my spice handle level is HORRIBLE. Hoping we can get that planned trip back in action because this video and Aki's is making me want to visit Seoul even more!
Please come back to see some more interesting sites in Seoul (like the Lotte World Tower, IFC mall, The Hyundai mall and TONS of really good restaurants) and you must go to Busan and Jeju Island one day too! I'm sure you'll enjoy the beaches and the FOOD!
Joey is actually really good at vlogging. Especially with these travel clogs, they're great!
So nice to see Aki letting Joey borrow her jacket
y'all's shared happiness gives me happiness.
more of this content please, you two are so adorable!
I love how Joey is just as much as foreign tourist in South Korea as many people are when visiting Japan. It's such a wonder when you're not 韓国語上手 .
It's so surreal to see Joey and Aki going to the exact same Yukhoe restaurant I visited earlier this year.
This is such a cute vlog! Happy Birthday Aki
thank you joey for showing your experience in korea :)
Thanks for the video, Seoul looks amazing!
You did a good job pronouncing Myeongdong! Japanese and Korean pronounciations are pretty similar, so you'll have an easy time learning Korean! Korean is very phonetic, I've taught many people to read in an hour before- really is just memorizing the symbols to sounds!
Happy belated birthday to Aki~
Proud MOA moment seeing TXT in the bg of the "KFC" place too~
I'm planning on going to Korea next year with some friends. I'm really looking forward to it Korea seems so beautiful.
I had some familiy in the military and they love South Korea, everyone of them have said they'll live there eventually
Damn. I actually stayed at the same hotel before. Now I gotta go on my birthday. My birthday tradition was going to Marriott on my birthday in Yeongdeungpo just because if you get one of the rooms, the buffet for breakfast and dinner is free. But no special birthday stuff :(
Must be nice. It would have been an even better blog if they had gone to the place where I stayed (it's fun to watch people suffer). The bed/toilet/chair took up the whole room. You couldn't even stand up.
@paulwalther5237 haha I have been there man. Gositels and stuff are nightmares. Where did you stay?
Yooo it's sick seeing you visit my home country
Hope you enjoyed your stay there
Loving these vlogs my man
Aki, I really related to the “ow my back!” And then proceeding to twerk 🎉 happy late birthday!
Welcome to our 30s Aki!! I turned 30 in Oct.. but I often forget I’m 30. They really mean it when we stop counting after 25 hahaha it’s our spirit that’s youthful
Aki sounded so surprised and enthusiastic when Joey sprang question where they're going today... premeditated! lol
1st of all happy birthday!! 2nd and lastly. in the winter in korea you needed to have jampong (a spicy seafood noodle dish) or oxtail soup with rice. ive lived in korea for 18 years thats the way to go! also half korean lol :)
I've always wanted to go to south korea !! thanks for the video Joey
Love the video and keep up the great work joey
Joey should make a video trying to learn korean in a week, joey i challange you
Been to 40 countries now working for a charter airline and Seoul is for sure one of my top 3 cities in the world, super nice people, super clean city, and Korean fried chicken is without a doubt the best in the world. Dope to see yall enjoy some of the same spots I've been to, there's so much left to explore there though!
never did i ever imagine Joey would spout the phrase "it's probably too spicy for you anyway" xD
Glad to see you enjoying your time in South Korea, Joey! Your pronunciation is not bad, if anything you could soften some of the consonants a bit; for example the "do" (도) in Myeongdong is the same as ど.
Edit: 21:56 As you suspected, it's a name, Park Younghee (박영희)
Ayo! Joey's tolerance to spicy is getting better!
Happy Birthday Aki! I stayed at the Four Seasons there as well…. soooooooo nice, best hotel I have ever stayed at :)
This whole trip has been so cute lol. Happy birthday Aki!
Thanks for sharing your adventure & Happy Birthday to Aki! I had orders to the American Embassy in Seoul when I was in the US Navy. But I had serious medical conditions crop up so that ended that. Hopefully, my daughter & I will get to visit both S Korea & Japan soon. I had two book publishers interested in one of my historical novels so prayers!
You two are so good together! Sending much love & many hugs!❤
Seoul is amazing and the food is INCREDIBLE. This makes me want to go back
Yep - 100% ridiculous food! It's overwhelming, in a good way...
Gamsamnida is the honourable way to say thankyou in everyday life Joey x Love the vid.
Edit: jal meogeotseumnida that you were taught, you say at meal times around a table like at dinner time as like you said - Thank you for the meal
