“To retar” is an english word meaning “to provide with a new coating of tar”. It doesn’t help the understanding, so I found out that there is also an Ainu word spelt “retar” (with the Kana spelling being レタル) that means “to be white”. So I’m assuming that it’s meant to be a “spa to be white/clean”.
Yeah their website confirms レタル is white in the Ainu language. I've not heard much Ainu being spoken so I don't know if it is pronounced "Retaru" as the katakana suggests or "Retar"...
11:14 I am the one that made the Jojo themed scarves for trash taste! I’m glad it came in handy because I wasn’t sure if any of you guys were actually gonna wear it but the only one I haven’t seen wear it is Connor lol. At least my Thai comrade Garnt got a lot of wear out of his Lisa Lisa scarf 🧣 ❤ Thank you for bringing it with you on this trip! It warms my heart seeing you wear it 💜
Actually I can understand colder than it is there. -38C isn't as cold as it has gotten in MN. MN record cold is -65F which is -53.8C. They shut down the state when it got that cold. Its one reason I moved south to NC. Much better winter temps. lol
I honestly don't get it. I'm not a fan of him. His vibe just doesn't fit with the others and he comes off as trying too hard to be funny. I haven't been able to enjoy any vid he's been in. I feel bad that I feel that way, but I can't help it.
Pete is ok, but he pisses me off in every irl with connor he's in. If anyone he meets acts nice and wants to hang out. Pete goes into some weird paranoid mode. I'm also talking about people who have zero clue who Pete is and Connor and whoever else who is out. they just want to drink for fun
@@overthewebbome people may misunderstanding, most of the time they asked Pete do to something nd people blame on him, especially when they asked for story eventhough somehowv he refused

Golden Kamuy is in my opinion one of the best anime/manga out there. Incredible story, amazing characters, top tier humour and overall just a fantastic time. A lot of the characters are fictionalized versions of real people like Shiratori Yoshie (The Escape King). Genuenly recommend it to anyone looking for a new series to watch. Could not stop watching it when I got started. Happy to see Joey bring it up since I rarely hear about it from others. Overall amazing video Joey, you always manage to make a tough day better!
I love seeing all the love Pete is getting. Some may have their alternative opinions but in the videos the dude just brings so much energy. Everyone in the making of journey across Japan deserves so much praise for their hard work. And Joey, Chris, natsuki and Pete are so damn entertaining to watch together
This almost feels like Joey and Connor went to same places, but Connor's vids are released 4 months before with Kaho, and Joey's are done with 4 times the budget and hot water.
I live in Northern Canada, and yup, -22 is properly cold. You never want to experience -40 or below. Everything just hurts at those temps. I really enjoyed this vlog. Hokkaido in the winter looks fantastic.
@@SlenderHime You need to plug your car in, as cars in Canada have block heaters (a small heater that warms up your engine), and you need a strong battery. It takes 10-20 minutes to even start feeling heat in the car when driving. It is rather unpleasant (it sucks so much when it gets that cold).
These vlogs are so great that I keep coming back to them and watching them over and over again. Reminds me of the old RUclips vlogs like the MoreTDM vlogs. No music. No overhype. Just a chill conversation with a chill dude.
thank you joey for todays video i hope you can find more intressting things to make videos of and telling their interessting stories :) i love listening to you or chris when you find something cool and then tells their stories around japan :)
That hotel gave me backroom/liminal vibes for some reason. Very distinctive appearance from outside, and a big contrast to its environment. The heater area having seats as if people should be there surrounding it and keeping warm (but of course the heater was off for some reason). The room being very odd, or maybe dated. Just something odd about the place, but not necessarily bad if you ask me. ... But anyways, I love Joey's vlog style. It's always felt cosy and never over the top. "Retar" in the store's name is "white" in the Ainu language. With a facial menu that seeks to whiten the skin like the "white" of the snow and the "white" of the sea of clouds, and a body treatment makes your time be gorgeous.
Should talk about abashiri prison being such a central role in Golden Kamuy also. They even have a poster of the prisioners of the manga/anime inside there :D
Ah, Tomamu resort. It must of been like 15 years ago when my family last went there. The room that you guys were staying must have been in the luxury tower, so good for you. The place became a complete ghost town after the bubble era, but Hoshino Resorts managed to turn it around after they purchased the place. Even though there are still abandoned buildings here and there, it is a nice place to visit. The view of the sea of clouds “unkai” from the top of the mountain is truly a sight to behold.
It looked like the steam from the train intentionally avoided covering everyone on the road lol like it arched over all of you specifically to allow the camera to get a good shot of it.
I love Golden Kamuy so this trip was quite cool to me. About the Ainu, I can see the "Viking" but I always thought they were a lot more like the Native Americans of USA. The clothing and spiritual connection to nature and animals.
Truly there is something about snow that makes one want ice cream. Even for me as a Canadian, surrounded by snow 8 months of the year! In the summer, I rarely have ice cream, I'm more of a slushie or popsicle person when it's hot. But as soon as snow hits the ground, you'd better believe I'm all about ice cream. I wonder why 😂
For retar, it may come from the Ainu word レタル meaning "to be white", which my best guess is another way of saying "to be clean", which makes sense when applied to the spa. Perhaps a member of the Ainu is a staff there and wrote the sign, or perhaps they get alot of Ainu people staying there so they wrote that to help them understand?
this is correct. also to note (and Joey should know this because he recommended it) BUT... The wolf from Golden Kamuy is named Retar! The show is centered around the Ainu
17:39 - i legit was thinking the same thing lol. even though i havent played AC in so long, it still somehow reminded me of those incredibly build towns!
I would rather compare Ainu to the Sami people that still lives in the northern parts of Scandinavia, rather than the vikings. I see some similarities in their way of life as well. btw. Golden Camuy the animé is great!
36:39 I was like "honestly, thats a pretty nice little area for one person" until you said each room used to house 3-5 people and then I was like "oh, nevermind" xD
