True. Every other main character's dad is missing in the franchise with very few justifications (X and Y implied your father had an unfortunate... Rhyhorn-related accident, and the protagonist of XD Gale of Darkness (Michael) is flat-out said to have his father dead).
Heck, the only times you actually see the male parents in the Pokemon world of either the player or their rivals, it's in kind of a negative light (the RSE/ORAS games' Norman, as seen here, is a workaholic at best, and his marriage to his wife is teetering; Palmer is hardly in Barry's life since he lives on an island off the northeast mainland of Sinnoh compared to his southwest mainland locked son and they both have a nasty habit of impatience and bumping into people; Bianca's dad is first seen yelling at her and interrupts the journey about halfway to drag Bianca home, but he does have a good point about Pokemon journeys being potentially dangerous; and the less said about N and Ghetis' relationship, the better). You really have to wonder if Nintendo and Game Freak have something to say about fathers in these games.

Just wanted to say that the drama between Brendan and Norman was genuinely engaging, you made Norman a DESPICABLE BASTARD, and watching them having a brutal heart to heart conversation was really goddamn good.

What I think is that Brendan was using affection as a way to hold off or avoid confronting his father. As Gex’s line proves “This is really about your father isn’t it?” Brendan realizes he can’t keep running from his father and decides to confront him.
