If it had gotten intimately passionate , I think the movie would have lost it's message. As Tilottma said in a interview the subject of master and maid relationship in India has been limited to pornography. I adored this movie for showing prejudices we have for that kind of relationship. Ratna was reluctant in returning his love back addressing him 'Sir'. And at the end finally coming in terms with her happiness.

  • @aishwaryaverma4033
    @aishwaryaverma4033 3 года назад +92

From my perspective, even when I saw the trailer, the movie didn't strike me as this gut wrenching love story. It was more a commentary on class divide and a story of how Ratna's purpose in life was to become the person she wanted to be despite coming from a background that makes it difficult. The whole point of the film (at least for me) was how they helped each other (Ratna with fashion design and Ashwin with going back to New York which he clearly missed). They definitely had a connection, but it would have been rather predictable and frankly a bit unrealistic if they showed the kind of struggle you wanted. Because one knows from the very beginning where they lie in society's hierarchy. So they as characters too know that even trying "dating" was a non starter. Even if Ashwin's character was one to not care as much, his friend sort of showed him the truer side of how things would look and how it would eventually be even worse for Ratna. You already know that going in. It isn't really about them defying the odds to be able to love each other. It's about them overcoming their own personal barriers. She wanted to work in fashion and he clearly didn't fit in the family business structure in Mumbai. At least that's coming from my Indian perspective.

I think you guys secretly loved the film... You just won't admit it 😂
This was a small independent film which was made in 2018 and it took two years for it to find a theatrical release and then Netflix... Its journey has been similar to "The Lunchbox" where it travelled the festival circuit and won many awards before finally releasing in India.
The makers of Lunchbox were lucky to get the backing of big names like Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap while "Sir" had a slightly more difficult journey...
You guys wanted Rajkumar Rao or Ranbir, I think Rohena Gera would not have been able to afford them, she auditioned many actors for Ashwin's role, Vivek Gomber's reading with Tillotama Shome worked for them and he was cast
Vivek Gomber is the producer of Court he backed the film when nobody else was willing to....
I disagree with you guys about his performance I think he was perfect in the role, and also the English speaking parts didn't feel weird to me...
Of course, Tillotama Shome is always a class act 👍
This film was a slow burn and a reality check put together
There was passion but it was an undercurrent, when they finally start to express it she gets a phone call that brings her back to reality, that's when she decides that is not the path she wants to go on and he respects her decision, I think it was important to show him respecting her boundaries... And in the end she breaks those barriers herself when she says his name and that one word expressed all that she felt for him... The fact that you wanted more shows the film has succeeded in getting the point across it was making...
This film needs multiple viewings to understand the depth of what it is conveying...
    It's my favourite film of 2020 👍

Preeti - I love your response to this review and I wholeheartedly agree with you and feel the same way.
These two - Rick and Korbin - needed to do more research before watching this film because they missed out on some crucial cultural aspects. I thought they might’ve appreciated ‘Is Love Enough, SIR’ more because it’s under-stared. But that’s something I don’t quite understand about their reviews - they thought SRK was too loud in DDLJ, yet they rave on about Ranveer Singh who is SO loud and in- your-face sort of an actor.
Rick and Korbin are very biased toward certain actors, and I think that distorts their view point, because their reviews don’t feel authentic, they feel and sound biased.
Anyhow... it’s a shame they were unable to understand and appreciate the tonality and beauty of this film. But WE did, as did millions of other people, and that matters more!!!

@@AvaniVee When OSR started out 3 years ago, they seemed to be truly on a journey to understand/experience artistry. But of late they seem to be resting on their laurels so to speak.
Although in their defense here, no amount of research, would have helped them understand the undercurrents of social/caste divide being shown. This is a cultural understanding absorbed through years of being exposed to it and having lived it. To expect them to get it all would be a monumental ask.
Vivek Gombe, was fantastic in his portrayal of the character, and the movie would have drowned under the star power of Ranbir and/or Rajkumar Rao. Thillotma as always was an absolute delight to watch.

Thank God it didn't turn into a struggle to be together movie. The struggle is internal, mental and the reluctance to break the barriers. The fact that society didn't care much but the girl did made it more endearing. Imagine what generations of caste discrimination can do to you. Even when there is a loving person willing to help and love you, your inner workings don't accept it. I feel that is the biggest tragedy of all.
It wasn't sleazy or boring typical potrayl in a film with this narrative. I am glad that they didn't over dramatize it and spoil the impact.

I see it very differently. The Male is isolated. The lady is rooted in her village, her family. To her the idea of marrying a man whose family will not accept her, or whose own family will disown her, is too upsetting. Someone like her perhaps does not quite understand the nuclear family. of course there is a caste angle. But there is also the traditional joint family angle. She is not urban enough to accept it easily.

I think the movie was just about that space these two characters exist .. just about that duration they go from two people who don't belong to each other to accepting each other... And this limited time and space was portrayed beautifully... No struggle, no point to me made... Other than two people from VERY different backgrounds.. where chance usually never favours them into being together, to come together as humans.. as the pure intended humans that they are .. just how life happened.. and those dynamics in those constraints ..

A very personal take, but I think adding any of those things would have shifted the tone of the film. It had an innocence to it that I think is exclusive to it. The movie dealt with the social issues in a very different way, and I liked that they didn't show too much of the class/ caste struggle. Those things were apparent and the viewer already knows, there's no point in showing that.
And as for me, I did feel their chemistry and the tension between them.

Thanks for watching this film. I have watched it twice to understand many nuances I missed on my first view.
It's very difficult for Americans to understand the Indian psyche of lovers coming from very different social strata. The movie is not about breaking this barrier which would have been look like a bollywood potboiler. The movie is trying to show, although they are coming from very different social strata, their life trajectory has so many similarities. Just one example, both had to sacrifice their dream for their families - girl married despite her having dream to be fashion designer while he returned from US sacrificing his writing career to look after his brother. Their are many such examples. This is to point to the fact that the differences are all social construct while at human level they could be so similar. And these artificial barriers prevent two minds come closure.

I saw the trailer and knew it would be a movie telling a story I would really like and I did! The trailer showed me that this would be a grounded story about real people showing what happens in real life. About people I might know or have lived in the same neighbourhood with. Tillottama Shome , as always, is brilliant but Vivek Gomber was a pleasant surprise! He was/is the guy we see at work as a colleague, or a friend or an acquaintance - someone most of us would or do know in our day to day life. Sombre, gentle, mellow, always considerate of others (like pleasing the family), a little confused about what he wants from life, dreaming but not risking and yet has his moments of clarity - in short your very average middle or upper middle class Indian bloke. Because of how Vivek portrayed his character the story seemed real and not an over the top romantic story! There have been too many stupid and full of innuendo movies/scenes depicting relationship between a man and a house help through often a pornographic lense in India and as Shome mentions somewhere that they had to be very careful to avoid that. Thank goodness there were no typical scenes about caste and class struggle and going against the family - so very typically mainstream masala. This is not a Romeo Juliet movie, why does there have to be a desperation and in your face passion? They both are constantly aware of their differences and also are struggling to accept it or are probably confused about what they actually feel? Stories like these happen in many cities and given the background and upbringing of these characters this is exactly how you would see them navigating through their feelings for each other. Hesitant, unsure, confused, awkward and yet so gentle/sweet, aware that they need to be realistic too. The two characters and their story delved beautifully into the sensitive topic of class and the line that exists between people and their house helps in India. Its fluid in many ways and yet extremely rigid about what's acceptable and what isn't. Also does class decide what you can achieve or dream off? Are you limited by what you are born into? The fact that this movie was appreciated by many in India shows that the existence of this line and unfair societal differences is being questioned and discussed. Really like the open ending otherwise it would have been too forced and artificial.
PS: Being an Indian who grew up speaking English with friends and family, believe me none of those scenes sounded artificial or strange. Also we had live in house helps all our lives. It was drilled into us that we always say our please and thank yous and never just demand!! And someone like Ranbir would bring too much of the star element to the story and would completely overshadow it that is if he would be brave enough to do a role like this anyway! This is such a sensitive topic that most well established actors would not touch this movie!!

Thank you guys for giving me a new perspective on this film! I loved it when I watched it but now that I think about it, Rick what you said about not feeling a palpable sense of longing and crescendo in the moment where they finally kiss really resonates with me. I also feel like she didn't seem very into him; that may be a result of him not being as strong of an actor as her. The love between the two of them wasn't as believable I'd have liked it to be. That said, I still think the story and the script are beautiful, as you guys also acknowledged. The director has said in many interviews that she didn't really start off wanting to make a love story. She wanted to present the reality of class divide in India; the love story came in later and became the 'zariya' or the medium through which she could convey her message. Maybe that explains why the love story wasn't as believable or as engaging. The director wasn't focused on making it believable; she was focused on conveying the message.

Hi Rick and Korbin, if you would like to watch a film where two people are struggling to overcome caste/social/age barriers to be together, I would suggest watching Kismath. It is a Malayalam film starring Shane Nigam (also seen in Kumbalangi Nights) and Shruthy Menon. There are many Indian love stories on this subject, but this film really made me feel for the two characters and their relationship.

And the English they spoke seems so relatable, as most of us talk that way. Vivek is a fine actor. I didn't see any issues with him or any of the actors. And that ending is what normally happens in real life so i could relate to thr entire story so much. Still love your reaction. You guys are always honest about how you feel. Lots of love.

I feel this movie was tailor-made for Indian audience and I am not surprised that Rick and Korbin, despite their exposure to Indian culture, weren't able to understand the soul of the movie. After seeing the trailer I went into the movie expecting something similar to what they expected, but came out with a lot more than what I expected. For me, this movie was a reality check on the cultural divide that still exists between the upper and lower classes of the society which cannot simply be bridged by a few open-minded progressive individuals (irrespective of how much my idealistic mindset wants to believe it), and this is really difficult to feed to American audience who have not seen this divide first-hand. The scene in the movie that reaches the epitome of symbolism is when Tillotama's character is leaving the house, and she has to carry her bags on her own(which I took to be the burden from several geneation-long divides in terms of socio-economic classes). If they were to enter into this relationship, he has to deal with the prejudice from his friends and family, but that doesn't even come close to what she has to deal with and how she will be percieved by the society. For me, this movie was an absolute freaking masterpiece.

I loved the film though 😍 i love how they take care of each other. It is a simple film but I loved it. 😍

I understand your disappointment about the movie not showcasing the love story enough although your own personal bias may also be at fault here.
I too desperately wanted to see the characters take the plunge and fight against society. But in retrospect, this is one reason I loved the film because in real life, two people in such a situation are more likely to act the way they did than to embark on a fairytale, against-all-odds romance.
Watching Ashwin hold back from pursuing/expressing his love for Ratna was painful but completely believable from an Indian perspective. May be he felt he needed to respect her boundaries and not make things more complicated and difficult for her. Also may be Ashwin too is bound by the societal norms that stop Ratna, no matter how hard he tries to convince her (and himself) otherwise. This is why I disagree with your assessment of his portrayal. All of his scenes were honest and sincere, not forced at all, even the English-speaking parts with friends and family. Folks belonging to the upper and upper middle class in India do use a lot of English in everyday communication.
The story, the writing, the depiction are all honest and believable. That's what makes the film endearing. Your review seemed hurried, judgmental and biased. And the last comparison with other Bollywood actors was not fair at all.

For me, the entire casting was perfect except Tilottama. She is tremendously good as an actor. But in this movie, I found she is the only one who is acting. So many times Tilottama's own personality overpowered Ratna, which is a little bit not likable.
The portrayal of the character played by Vivek is awesome. I think you missed his conversation with his sister, after his marriage was broken. There the baseline of the character is revealed. How he thinks & operates.
The ending couldn't be better than this. The stereo typical concept is: women go to any extent for the sake of love, & for men, identity (career, image) is the 1st priority of a man. But here that concept is just the opposite. A sensitive mature man falls in love (may be for the 1st time), & he doesn't let it go in any circumstances. & a woman like Ratna, when she creates a separate identity for herself, only then she considers the other good things of life.
    I just loved this movie.

Vijay Varma looks a tad sleazy for this part. The spoken English scenes did not bother an urban Indian at all. overall, I think the film emphasised the romantic aspect, not the sexual. Its a very delicate act, because this is a sexualised relationship. The gentle, protective, romantic aspect, dignifies her. Also he seems lost and confused and alone. That too is very real. Most indians adored the male character. the isolation is very Mumbai and you can see it as a result of rampant capitalism and not necessarily Western. Indian families are pretty dysfunctional too.

Liked the movie. One thing that could’ve been better was the Ashwin character. Many time the Indian filmmakers create a westernized or an outsider character who is oblivious to the socio-economic reality of India. They showed the same thing in Dhobi ghaat and Article 15. Maybe directors aren’t keen to create a native complex character. I mean would Ashwin behave the same way if he was brought up in Mumbai? If he did, how would the director convince the audience ?
