    In most parts of Asia, people live by the motto, "What people (others) will think/say?".
    It's just the part of their cultural identity. That's how they were taught to live. You don't have to change it necessarily. But, no one can deny that it's surely changing with time (for good)!

  • @porichoygupta

    Indian society has a lot of ways of ‘othering’ (class, caste etc) and that’s what is at the core of this movie. While you may not understand caste and class issues as an American but don’t take the high horse either. Contrary to what you say, in the US also everybody can’t live and be together with whoever they want. Interracial relationships are still a taboo in majority of US, and ppl even call the cops if they see kids of a color with someone of a different color. So think of the problem portrayed in this movie from that lens. Yes, end of the day we would want a world where such othering would not take place.

    • @abhiprai2954
      @abhiprai2954 3 года назад +5

      This movie is about the class divide. I don’t think the class divide doesn’t exist in USA or any other country in the world. Of course it much less in America where family and social ties are far far weaker than in Asia. By and large western societies are more about individuals - its usually self before others. But “what-will-they-think” is very relevant in various other things such as the brands, colors and fashion one wears or the car one drives or where one takes his date or what ring a man gives his girlfriend when he proposes. They just have a different label In USA - “Keeping up with the Jones”.

  • @AvaniVee

    SIR - Is Love Enough? Is an absolutely beautiful and stunning movie. Highly recommend you watch this film. It's simple yet sincere in its storytelling, and the characters portrayed by Vivek Gomber (Ashwin) and Tillotama Shome (Ratna) are just sublime. They both gave heart-touching performances.
    I have to slightly correct you on your comment about 'love' in the Western world. It is a huge misconception that any person can love anybody; if that were true division of classes wouldn't exist. You have upper, middle and lower class across the Western world. I've never seen a wealthy person fall in love with a poor person and for that to be accepted by society - in the US or here in the UK. You never hear or see that happen. Most wealthy people court and marry within their own class.
    Harry and Meghan. I'll stop right there. Because they are a great example of how socio-economic, profession, marital status (divorcee) and race played - and still play - major factors in their courtship and marriage. The struggles that they face is obscene. They might be married, but they certainly haven't had an easy ride. Good for them though for standing by each other.
    Socio-economic backgrounds do play a role in Western society, as does race. I know many inter-racial/inter-religious couples who struggle to cope in society. It is false; you cannot just fall in love and be with whoever you want to be with if they fall outside of your race, culture, religion or economic status. You are going to face struggles.
    So I think people across the world will relate to the story of 'SIR - Is Love Enough?'. It's a universal concept and story that will touch people's hearts.

    Marriages across the class divide are difficult (to the point of being unthinkable) in India. Even marriages across religious or caste boundaries work only if the couple belongs to the same social class. Putting myself in the maid's shoes, I think she would be very doubtful of being accepted by his family. It would remain an illicit affair that would just make her the butt of jokes at best and bring her house-arrest by her in-laws at worst. That is where she is coming from when she says it matters to her what people think.

      Ya and rick noticed it too that the roles were reversed and I like that about the trailer. Cus it gives so much depth to her character as she seems to be a person with pride and knows that cus of her socio economic background ppl will be quick to judge that she's a gold digger and he an idiote for being in a relationship with her or overly empathetic person who more like pities her. And the latter she might be thinking too and that's why doesn't want that kind of a help. While the guy seems to be very confident with his choice and that kind of confidence I think also comes from his socio economic background. The culture of house maid is very common in India more than USA. Almost every working class/rich household has "maids" who come to clean the house, dishes and cook food in many homes too everyday for very small salary (50-100 dollars a month). Culturaly and commonly, maids are treated with very little value and respect. So having an affair with one is very very bad in indian society due to extreme class divide.

    Classism especially the treatment meted out out to servants is bad as much as caste problem. People imagine or accept affairs between people from these two classes but not serious relationship. Especially the maid is a widow and it will affect her life more seriously than his because she is risking her freedom to work and independent life.

  • @NonaPrince
    @NonaPrince 3 года назад +5

    The whole point of the film is that we live in a society that this relationship will not be accepted because its not just the class difference but also culture, language, education and status. There is a dialogue in the film that says, you can look away from the fact that she is a maid but the society will never let it forgot you.

  • @dikshauniyal
    @dikshauniyal 3 года назад +12

    This is a beautiful film to understand the class caste hierarchy.
    About the dynamics between people and their servant here in India, well, it's a taboo I would say. All the more, for the maid/servant. Because the society will only make fun or blame or shame the servant not their employer. Even in the film, if the guy is saying he doesn't care is because he is privileged and doesn't understand the world the maid comes from. Though Rick is right that people do have reservations when it comes to "stepping down". I remember my friend telling me that his friend from America had a crush on my friend's maid. He wanted to approach her. And my friend had to explain him how the poor woman's life will be ruined if she goes out with him. Even if she says no. Her own people will not let her go out from the home once they find out she was approached by this guy. Dating and relationship is too far fetched. She would lose the job.
    It's understandable how the idea is so alien to Rick and Korbin. But that's the reality here. This whole idea of dating your servant is unthinkable. The concept of dating is anyway exclusive in a certain sections of society. Many, even today, are just tied off to someone their parents decide and that's their only option. Loving someone is like an act of revolution in this country. Especially for the marginalized who do not belong to the mainstream. Funny, no? 😀

    You need to understand the cultural and socio-economic structure of India to be able to understand some of the social norms. Not everything is fair but then which country or culture really has that? Also lot of belief systems have thousands of years of historical context and things that are not right do and will change. It will take time. I think every culture/country has its weaknesses. I like many Indians have grown up in households where we have had house helps for domestic work. There are layers of complexities involved in a relationship between a homeowner and their house help. Its not a typical professional relationship as the help is part of your household and therefore your personal lives intertwine. Many house helps work all their lives for same families/family and become like family and yet there is that deep rooted deep seeded difference - interestingly sometimes from both sides! Romantic relationships or marriages would be a big thing and in many parts of India - a scandal! I can compare it a little to what also happens in the West. When my friend (Indian by ethnicity) was introduced by her boyfriend to his parents (White American family from Texas) they were definitely not jumping with joy and tried to convince him very hard to not marry her (racial prejudice)! And I know personally of a case (again in America) where the guy was a struggling musician so also worked as a waiter and how his fiance's family rejected him as they were extremely well to do (class difference). They got married without her family's participation or blessings. So it does happen everywhere but is more common in India. I feel though things are changing in India. There is more awareness of social justice and equality. Hopefully one day we will all be able to live and let live. This is a fab movie telling a beautiful story. The acting is just fantastic. Both Tillotama Shome and Vivek Gomber are awesome and the direction is flawless. You have seen the actress in A Death in the Gunj and Vivek Gomber produced 'Court'

    I think for this film to hit in the right way, it is important to understand the servant/mister relationship in India. These ppl will often love in ones home and even raise you, but they would never eat with you, you will barely speak outside of their work, and you will not form friendships. As an American going to south asia, this can be quite jarring. How can you be in such close quarters with someone, yet be so far from each other? This movie does a great way of subtlety showing that.

    Americans are so clueless about how class works in their society, and that’s the reason the class system remains unchanged in the United States. This whole spiel about you can love whoever you want in America is BS.

      very true lol like yes sure you can love whoever you want in america but you most definitely will be judged for who you love in america based on a MULTITUDE of factors (race, class, socioeconomic status, etc.)

    This movie is about the practicality of the system and society we live in , as the world is growing , we are growing , people in India are not anymore afraid of society and what people think , but that doesn't change the fact thay we are who we are , i mean this movie potrays that she doesn't stop herself from loving her "SIR" but she doesn't want anymore labels and heavy duty insult that comes with it , so she keeps it to herself and decides to do the right thing , and once at the very end , she feels that she can have a separate identity , that could fetch her repect she demands , she stop calling him "SIR" , sorry spoiled it for ya , but this story just not talks about love and cages of society but practical decisions as well ,
    At the end of the day , you never wanna lose someone you love but you don't wanna be miserable with them ,
    so you just let love be .....

    You guys should watch this film immediately, it has been trending at no 1 on Netflix India, I have already watched it 4 times over the weekend, it's like I binge watched a film lol.... It's that good 😌
    It's a very indie film, Indo-french production, director is Rohena Gera, it's her debut film and she is brilliant, this film was made in 2018, then travelled to film festivals, won many awards and now finally released in India in theatres in Nov and now on Netflix
    The two main leads are phenomenal
    The actress Tillotama Shome is so effortless, her body language, her posture, everything is amazing 😍
    She is one of the best female actors today, She deserves all the awards for this one, you guys have seen her in "Angrezi medium" and "A Death in the Gunj" in a supporting role
    The actor Vivek Gomber is so good, this is his breakout role I guess, he too has done supporting roles before, You have seen him in "Court"
    Also he is the producer of "Court" and "The Disciple", he was the one who backed the director of Court when nobody else was and I am happy now he is getting his due as an actor too 👍
    Please watch this one soon, it deals with a difficult subject with so much sensitivity and maturity... 5stars for it
    PS: I remember watching a Hollywood movie "Maid in Manhattan" with Jennifer Lopez which was the love story of a maid and a wealthy politician, of course it was more mainstream and a totally different style...

    🌸 It's a beautiful and sensitively directed little film, based on Gera’s personal observations how “the help” is often treated in India and the invisible dividing lines between “classes” that everyone seems to have normalized. I’ll be looking forward to whatever Rohena Gera is making next. 🥰
    I was thrilled to see Tillotama Shome shining in a leading role (long overdue!). 🤩 You should also watch *Monsoon Wedding* (Mira Nair, 2001), *Shanghai* (Dibaker Banerjee, 2013) and *Manto* (Nandita Das, 2018), for her performances of course, but mostly because these are great films. ♥️ I gotta watch *Qissa* and *A Death in the Gunj* soon. 😻

    It's the first time , that's what there was this actor who lost his career for the same reason though it was a rape case, so it's seen bad in society to be mixing in the classes, but this generation may not think like this , however movie still shows how society is , how class divide is very prominent , n it's a story like dreaming bigger than boots , I m just giving example but it may sound outrageous n impossible in our society n that's why this film is important ... I didn't even think this movie will go towards a love story between the two coz this is so new n not observed ... But it made me look better at the help I get through their help n how it's for them to be this invisible n how less they aspire coz someone doesn't give them space to come out n breath . It's very apt movie for changing times in indian society

    There are couple of reasons this relationship is at risk of being judged and thus a taboo. One which you easily get is the class difference. The second, is the connotation and bad context attached to the equation of a maid and the employer. Usually such relations are discrete in nature, and just for pleasure. And this is something which i guess will be more explored here...because class is a little less of an issue in this very posh and urban side of the city.

This kind of film unfortunately would not have garnered much audience even in normal times, I wonder how many would have gone to see it now. It was actually released in European theatres way back in 2018 when it was already playing the festival circuit!
