- And now...Part Deux of the show-stopping, jaw-dropping, musical finale extravaganza that was SO BIG it had to be brought to you in TWO PARTS! They said I was crazy. They said it couldn't be done. But here we are, ladies and gentlemen. And now, without any further adieu, I proudly present to you...the exciting...not to mention completely batshit insane...conclusion to..."XANADU"!! (cue fart sounds FX)
I don’t care what anyone says, I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! The songs are amazing! Gene Kelly. Olivia Newton-John. Electric Light Orchestra on the soundtrack. ALL GOOD!!
Dear Tanya,『 Xanadu 』からは、皆が楽しんでいるのが伝わって来ますから、ミュージカル映画作品の真髄を改めて感じました✨
Me too got it on VHS dvd and recorded to keep on TV, also album.love it all
It’s going to be a classic love this movie
I do too!!!@
Me too.
She didn’t die..She just went back to Xanadu
She is singing. XANADU
It did what movies orginally were made to do - to entertain us and take our minds off our troubles if only for a short time and your hearts can become young again and believe in magic.
Unfortunately, even back then, I believe we were starting to become a pretentious lot. Now that's definitely true. America was beginning to forget what it is to just sit back , be entertained, let our hair down, and enjoy something.
This constant "need" to critique and criticize everyone, and anything, seeped in starting with the 1960's, and has gotten worse as time went on. Today we are so eager to tear the world apart with constant negativity, it's a wonder we are functioning at all.
If this movie had been an idea in 2020, I doubt it would have gotten past the drawing board. It's not dark enough for today's warped society.
Personally, I've always loved *"Xanadu."* My best friend and I went to see it in the movie theater at the time. Being a teenager then, we walked down the street, singing and dancing the songs as we made our way back home that evening...
Deborah 78. The only way “Xanadu” would work in 2020 is if they catered it to the progressive liberal agenda and the social justice warriors. It might be an even bigger hit now than it was in 1980.
I was too young for the movie theater release by myself; but I saw it a year later on HBO. It was a horrible movie all across the board. However, the only redeeming qualities were a smoking hot Olivia Newton-John and the ELO soundtrack.
Deborah 78. I’ll say it’s entertaining when it’s late in the evening, you’re chilling at home with friends and you’re all tipsy or stoned. It has A LOT to do with how attractive ONJ is, especially for a heterosexual male.
I could name three who could do “Xanadu” today: Amanda Seyfried, Julianna Hough, or Taylor Swift (great feature film debut for her).
I think Xanadu 2020 would be a refreshing change from our vampire-loving bloodthirsty (no pun intended) culture. Like I said, it would have to be PC and left-wing inspired. I think Kate McKinnon would be good if they wanted to go the sapphic route or Rebel Wilson if they do the “fat is beautiful” angle OR even make Kira an African-American and do a whole hip-hop routine.
@@lakebay972 ~ I didn't say there wasn't anyone who couldn't play the role today. But Taylor Swift? Yuk! I wouldn't listen to anything from her if I was paid to. For me, her music is boring, bubble gum pop. In all honesty, I wouldn't bother to even go see another Xanadu. Because I know it would be trashed.
And again, with the cult like society that we have today, it simply wouldn't work. At the very least, Hollywood would turn it into some trashy, head shaking, foul-mouthed; ghetto style hooker fest. Because I doubt they would get any white actors to play those roles a second time around.
As far as how attractive Olivia was, sure for you. But I have the feeling most of the people who went to see the movie were females. So no, her attractiveness wouldn't have been a factor for the majority of the movie goers. More like her singing, because the soundtrack did better than the movie itself...
Yes, to perfection!!!
I don't know why some people think this is a bad movie, it is good.
There is a third group. Those who like it but are too embarrassed to say so (Mark 8:38).
The best movie ever apart from Saturday Night Fever, Grease and The Apple.
I have always been more Xanadu than Grease saw both when they were released...it guess Xanadu was kinda darker than Grease melancholy i am sucker for that plus you have the forbidden relationship on top it..then the mysterious ending
I lived this movie and the music when it came out..I was only about 8 or 9 though.
They say it's bad because they are embarrassed by how good it makes them feel. (Matthew 18:3)
This movie bombed its release in 1980. I’ve always said wrong time and place! The 80s and early 90s were not ready for Xanadu! Not even sure our current decade is sentimental enough to understand the enteral love of this film. The music, the dance.. the everything. Xanadu is and will always be something extraterrestrial.
I believe part of the reason it wasn't successful was because the movie was only released in 249 theaters across the country. That number was "supposed to be 700. Why that happened has never been explained.
However, we are such a dark, warped society now. If they had pitched the idea today, I don't believe it would have gotten out off the drawing board.
Ever since the late 1960's America had started to become very cynical. Gone were the carefree times of optimism, enjoying ourselves, "the love of living" if you will. *Xanadu* exuded, & celebrated all those things...
It's for the child at heart...it's a happy film no cussing etc a very clean movie should be GP not PG rated..critics failed to see the message in the movie partly the fault of the director too many revisions on the script... Plus olivia and Michael beck has zero chemistry, gene and olivia has more chemistry they shld have just focus on them
Gen kinks as I understand it, it actually made money, but did not perform as expected and received a critical mauling. I am a huge Olivia fan, and it has wonderful music which sold fantastically, the movie has high production values and the musical numbers are wonderfully staged. But even as a die hard fan I couldn’t deny its story falls flat. The ‘drama’ scenes are amateurish. Olivias role as a muse means she is kinda disengaged, which comes across as flat and frankly it would have taken better actors than either Olivia or Michael Beck to rise above poor script and direction. I wonder if the musical sequences were directed separately as they really are strong.
RIGHT. MEXICAN EXTRATERRESTRIAL. THE MEXICAN GODFATHER 1980 2020
Absolutely, it's clearly inspired from out of this world. This clearly shows that the Muse is real.
Not only this movie was so well put together which will leave unforgettable experience but also the references to the Ancient lost world which is mostly forgotten the director was very brilliant and clever and had done of lot of research including duality, conjuration and divination.
3:11 is the prophetic moment when ONJ returns to the Muses, but leaves her artistic inspiration behind to touch all of us for eternity! Rest in Peace, Olivia. At the 4:29 mark is exactly how I feel now that Olivia is gone!
Same here. I heard Magic on the radio recently and it makes me feel so sad. 😭
Just saw a post on another Xanadu video that Olivia passed on the 42nd anniversary of the 'Xanadu' opening day. Astounding coincidence.
The music and dancing are exceptional, but can we get some love for the set designer and construction team that built the turntable dance floor in the center of the scene? Take a look at what's going on starting at 3:40 ....
- Rotating dance floor, moving smoothly enough to dance on, and sturdy enough to hold eight adults
- Multiple light groups in the floor perfectly sync'ed
- Pedestal in the middle, raised while the rest of the floor is rotating, lighted separately, and strong enough to hold a person
Fantastic work! How was it built so precisely using 1980 technology?
You left out the air jets in the central pillar that made ONJ's dress start to gently billow right before she turned into golden light!
Obviously it is aliens and alien tech. Like the pyramids.
I mean, useless humans only put a man on the moon 10 years before that... a rotating floor and a few flashing lights are WAY ahead of our current tech.
I interviewed the set designer. He mentioned the lighting people working on it for weeks.
I picked up on some of that. All of it was pure GENIUS!
Good eye for detail my friend. I would say all of the trades/crafts people involved with this movie were on their A game. There seemed to be a metric crap ton of fashion styles implemented too. That wardrobe department must have been pretty busy.
When she came out dressed like the queen, I always got SO sad b/c I knew she was going to look so pretty in the white dress and then disappear. Gah....took me right back to 1980!
She very looks beautiful in white dress, that I think she dress it in the cover back of the vinyl.
Either for better or for worse, both the choreography and the special effects on display throughout this film were so far ahead of their time and so 'out of this world.'
Empire Strikes Back came out the same year. 🤷♂️
@@73Goodfellow i know.
I really love Xanadu. Olivia Newton-John is good in the role, so is the guy, Michael Beck. But the best was Gene Kelly. He was so awesome, especially in the finale. I could watch it all day. You’re probably thinking I’m crazy to love Xanadu but I guess, judging from the notes that have been posted for this movie, I don’t think I’m too crazy. 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
It took a lot of courage for Olivia to make this movie. She is so effortlessly beautiful, breathtaking. Fortunately the soundtrack was a huge smash!
Xanadu for me is one of the greatest movies and soundtracks of all time God bless Olivia all the people in the movie and all the people who created it
Why can't they make cheerful movies like this anymore. My favorite as a kid.
They did. It's called "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs."
jordan delta i so agree i wish we could go back to the movies that was so fun to see and listen to where when the ends and you just want to keep on dancing out of your seat and out of the threater
Anonymous Near Seattle not even close!
@jordan delta
I agree, today's Hollywood is dark, and ugly. But society was a brighter place back then, people were more outgoing and willing to meet new people, and people were generally nicer to be around back then. 1980s and earlier were better time to live.
People don’t appreciate movies like this now. It’s all about sex 😡
This is the best soundtrack in film history. ELO, John Farrar, and of course our Olivia. God I wish I had a time machine.
Totally agree
I agree
Agree 100%!!!!
I've Loved this movie/soundtrack FOREVER! Wondering WHY the end scene when "Kira" appears in the gold costume was cut out of the movie? Have you noticed that?
Isn’t it though!!
As much as I enjoy watching Olivia in this, I really love watching the amazing talented dancers and skaters. The end sequence I love watching over and over again. So great ❤️
This Movie put an Electrical charge in every gay boys heart back in 1980. I’m now 50 I watch this and the memories of a father that was ex Army and loved his boys and quietly “ knew” so he took me to see Xanadu. Bought me ABBA albums and platform shoes. He is a good man. Your 84 now dad going senile and can’t remember a dam thing but I remember, I remember Dad. THANKYOU, LOVE YOU DAD🌺
Glen Hutton excellent dad! God Bless !
You're a lucky man. Treasure those memories Glen. My father was disgusted with me. Somehow though, even in 1980, I didn't give a damn. It was my little secret. I revelled in it.
You were a lucky lad to have such a tolerant and loving dad.
Your post made me choke up - sounds like you have/had a great relationship with your Dad.
I was ten back then and thought I had a crush on ONJ. Turns out I wanted to be ONJ.
Xanadu and Grease will always be forever in my heart. Love you Olivia
having so many beautiful songs from that movie they only play Xanadú. What a shame
This movie was good. The best part, I think, is the finale. Olivia Newton-John was great. And I've always loved Gene Kelly. 💕💕💕
Oh when she goes up to sky 😭. Rest in Peace Olivia
Was 13 in 1980 when this came out! Was so anxious to see it then. I loved it!! ❤ Olivia put this out, same time her good friend, John Travolta put out Urban Cowboy that same summer...( love her cowgirl dance)...needless to say? Summer of 1980 was epic 👍😻👍
DAMN!! Could Olivia be any hotter?! Especially in the tap number with her hair in an updo- WOW! She is such an amazing woman; I have so much respect for her
She is a singularly perfect creation. Face, body, hair, voice... My first childhood celebrity crush. She still makes me sigh.
its so sad when you think shes gone.. and then she comes back.. its awesome.
...But I always thought the girl at the end was not the muse but someone who looked just like her.
It wasn’t the muse itself, but a manifestation of a human visage based on her love for the man.
CrystaJoy kind of like this: ruclips.net/video/wbL7jaVrIuI/видео.html
But the fact that she's not really her, and he seems fine with it, makes it seem that he didn't really care for her, just someone who looked like her.
No, it's her, that's why Gene called her over, because he knew she was still here.
This has to be one of the greatest movies of my childhood!!! Absolutely love it 😍
The one thing I could never understand about this soundtrack was the fact that they didn't include a full-length version of the song 'Fool' (1:07). That would have definitely been another hit single for O.N.J.
My friends and I basically ruined a VHS rental copy of the movie by repeatedly rewinding and rewatching that scene, especially the moment where Olivia turns around to face the camera (1:14).
The best way to exit from a club.
RIP Olivia Newton-John😑
Rest in peace Olivia .... Rhonda. Prater. California.lovecgh....
Who’s here just to pay tribute to dear ONJ with that devastating news this morning?
RIP
I was born in 1980, I saw Xanadu in a german TV (I’m near the German frontier) and It hypnotized me. It was in 1990, and soon I saw again in French (my language) in a Belgian Tv. It takes almost 12 years to find Xanadu : thanks Internet !! I’ve never forgot this movie and the songs!! I’m alive : the first song opening the movie, was in my head since my 10’s!! What a pleasure to rediscover the movie 12/15 years later!!! Now I.m 41 and I let see the movie to my daughter : she loves it! Xanadu is so underrated and un-understand to the 80s public : Glad to see that today Xanadu is popular!!
I absolutely loved this movie and still do and so do my daughters. I was 15 when I saw it at the cinema and immediately rushed out and bought the album
Look Ma, no computers! Pure art, pure talent.
Not really... considered a bad example of poor filmography. Ruining a great story and soundtrack...
This is my favorite movie. Olivia Newton John is the Best. She is Amazing!!!
Xanadu has been and will always be my favorite movie. I saw the musical on Broadway, and it was a dream of mine for it to be on Broadway. It wasn't the same. The movie still rules.
The movie played the story straight...the Broadway musical didn't. If anything, the Broadway musical was intended as a parody version (particularly since it included an "evil" Muse as an antagonist).
From 3:07 on, every time, I get chills. Absolutely AWESOME!!! Even at 240p.
I love this movie so much Xanadu is my favorite movie entire in the whole entire world.
Anybody notice Sandahl Bergman as one of the muses/dancers
yes i did
She is a far more talented dancer than the rest of the muses, it's hard not to notice her.
I also saw "Ozone" from the later 80's movie Breakin'
William Gurecki Ozone has been a dancer since the late 60s. He joined a dance group led by Toni Basil that started out on The early days of Soul Train called The Breakers. They were on there for about 5 years until they left because DC would not pay them.
She was one of the fitness instructors, in The Firm workout video, from the 90s.
I loved this movie when it came out & I still love it today!! It's a wonderful fantasy with beautiful music. And especially Olivia Newton John & Gene Kelly together!💜
RIP Olivia Newton John
I loved this movie
So Muse#1 was Sandahl Bergman who later played Valeria in Conan The Barbarian. Funny. It goes without saying that Olivia, Gene and the music of ELO made Xanadu well worth watching.
I was born in 1990 and we always had this on VHS in the house I loved this movie as a kid and I still love it as an adult. This is still my favorite part I love all the looks and different styles of music she did. Olivia Newton John is an ICON. 🙏🏾💯❤🔥
I love the ending where Sonny thinks Kira is gone but in a different way she didn't really leave....this is a great movie
Olivia has headed back the heavens for eternity….
She was so beautiful..I'm sad she's gone
maybe for the 40th anniversary next year we could get a complete reissued/remastered with all the songs and maybe some remixes?
Wishful thinking. Yesterday was the 40th anniversary and nothing.
I wish that the song "Fool" were a full-length song that Olivia Newton-John had recorded at an earlier stage (the sound is reminiscent of the "Totally Hot" album which she released in 1978) or that there were a full-length version of it instead of just a fragment.
I know what you mean. That song was one of my favorites on the Xanadu album
I wish there were a longer version of, "Fool."
I watch that and then think Taylor Swift could take some notes.
It’s longer in the broadway soundtrack
my favorite part! 🔥🔥🔥
@@RamondCurtis fool is on one her singles magic i think
Samee
She can literally sing anything
And all those styles she sings so fresh!
She could sing the dictionary and I'd be the first in line to buy the album!
RIP Olivia Newton John
Opinions are like assholes everyone's got one. In my opinion I love this film. Always have always will. R.I.P ONJ
not only gorgeous on the outside but she was on the inside also. What a wonderful human she is. Complete legend.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE, LOVE XANADU !!!! Just one question.....Did Producers "Borrow" the Set for the Last Scene from....."Logan's Run" ???!!!!!
it does look like carousel, just no burning bodies
And part of the Warriors movie...Swan lol
beach side Swan got out of Coney and ended up in Venice Beach. Nicer gangs and the people on roller skates aren’t trying to kill him. 😂
yep
The muses were gorgeous!
I can’t believe how many times I’ve watched this😊😍. Absolutely love it and the movie in general .
The way "Kira" vanishes is so appropriate; I've always considered ONJ to be a genetic fireball. :D
I love the end of the movie but my favourite part is the beginning when the muses come out of the mural
Same
I love this movie! I remember seeing it and falling in love with the music (ELO and Olivia), dancing, costumes and the set design ( I secretly wished I had a house with the turn table dance floor). This is a feel good movie. I think people who don't like it is because they didn't realize this a fantasy movie. I watch this movie all the time!
I totally agree.
Wtf was this movie about?!
Love love love the songs and dance in the movie!
Jeff lynne,, genius... i like this film too. Great escapism,,, thats all we ask for these days,, in this crazy world.
I still love this movie after all these years. Great music by ELO and ONJ. It is a fantasy film.....a feel good movie. Just kick back and enjoy it!
i am thinking about, very seriously about bring xanadu back, calling it xanadu revisited, contact kenny ortega, who i think is a genious.let me know what you think.i need investors, and permission from elo,to do this.
Someone tell Jeff Lynne we NEEDthe ELO part remastered to get this out again!
min 3:25 voy a llorar. Todas las.musas bailando alrededor de la gran musa del canto. Olivia Newton-John . Mi corazon. Que recuerdos. De mi adolescencia en los 2000😭
ONJ passed away exactly 42 years after this film was released. RIP legend.
I think the reason why critics didn't like this movie is because it was far ahead of its time.
I wish there full versions of the end songs some where.... I would think they would very nice as full songs.
In the summer of '81, this played over and over on The Movie Channel and when there was nothing better to do, there was Olivia! I loved her music, loved the ELO tunes, Gene Kelly is a legend, but MIchael's poor acting stunk it up. So, I focused on Olivia! Poise, grace, and a little fire carefully hidden underneath. It's not a legendary film but there are many things in it to enjoy and I think that 's why I like to revisit it from time to time.
Hard to believe Gene Kelly was in this movie
It was a courageous thing for him to do, but he did a lot of good in the movie.
@@zymurgynet He did the choreography for Olivia in the Whenever You're Away From Me segment, and like a true gentleman, he choreographed a dance that was beautiful yet simple enough that a non-dancer like Olivia could do it. Typical Gene, always looking out for his partner and showcasing them so they could shine
Roger of American Dad!, wears a disguise like Olivia Newton John in the episode The Vacation Goo. Its very funny
Xaaaanaduuuuuuuu!! Can't cry on cue!!!!! 😂😂
I remember watching this on cable t.v. in the early 80's, loved the movie because of ELO and ONJ
That final note... RIP.
Is there a name to the song near the start of the clip where they're tap dancing in the red/black cocktail waitress type outfits? Can't seem to find it mentioned anywhere....
The movie wasn’t great but the SOUNDTRACK I purchased on vinyl and played over and over
My Musical First Time! Olivia was just perfect and at this point I fell in love with Gene Kelly not even knowing who he was. Xanadu will always be happy thoughts.
Rest in peace Olivia.
Certainly an eclectic floor show. Best outfits are the standard muse outfits.
Still outstanding!!! I got goose bumps everytime I hear it, especially when they merges 🤩🤩🤩
Rip Olivia
Like I said this is my favorite part of her
I’ll never forget this scene
I FELL IN LOVE WITH OLIVIA IN THIS MOVIE.....WHICH IS SOOOOOOOOOO UNDERRATED..!!!!!
I LOVE this movie. ALL the songs are amazing! It’s an 80s cult classic musical!
This was always my favorite part in the movie. Olivia's outfit/look at 1:16 was fabulous. It showed how sexy she was, without being tawdry...
Having never seen the whole movie, I have never understood the dematerialization of the dancers in the apotheosis at the end. For some it always puts in my mind of the Carousel sequence from Logan's Run. I would say the whole sequence is radioactive with 1980-ness. Could be no other year.
My mum and dad hired two films on the same day in 1986, Xanadu and The Dark Crystal. Both lead Characters were named Kira. Guess what my name is lol. Spelt the same too. This movie and Dark Crystal will forever be my favourite go too movies. I’ve just started skating again. Which means two things, recreations of Xanadu, and educating people upon this movie lol! And repeating Samuel Taylor Coleridge Xanadu poem. (Only the first couple of verses though lol)
Movie is okay, cute the Soundtrack was incredible
It’s like Saturday Night Fever the movie was okay but the Soundtrack was incredible
As corny and gaudy as the 70's were, I would go back there in a second, if I could be her boyfriend...
This was the best part of the movie
I don’t care what anyone says this has always been and always will be my fave film of Olivia’s 😭🙏🏻💔🙏🏻I cannot believe she’s gone xxxx much much loved Olivia never forgotten RIEP SWEETHEART XXXX
RIP Gene and Olivia 🙏🙏
Truly inspiring and artistic film. The 9 Muses were exquisite. Such nice memories from 1980.
Michael Beck foreshadows Dwight Yoakam’s look some 20 years in advance.
Why can't I find a GOOD quality version of this part... still?
Buy the dvd its epic
@@pythongunner
I have the VHS... does that count?
HaHa I just want a good clip HERE!
A great movie, soundtrack even better!
FOOL COUNTRY song by Olivia Newton John.... There now I can find it again .... And again... Love her voice so much
This is one of my top 10 guilty pleasures
It's out as a Broadway play well, and doing quite well! Maybe someday we will see it! Xanadu 2: Electric Bugaloo!
One of the BEST soundtracks of all time. RIP Ms Olivia Newton John. 😢 YEAHYAAAA!! Michael BET was so gorgeous. His heart must be broken. I'm not getting teary-eyed at all. 😳🥺🥺🥺😥😥😢😢😭
This movie is both awful and compulsively watchable!
I absolutely love it!!!
