My brother and I saw this movie when it first came out on cable, on HBO I think, probably in 82 or 83. I was around 7 years old at the time, my brother probably 9. Xanadu became the first album that me and my brother ever asked our parents to buy us. We didn't care too much for the plot of the movie, but Olivia Newton-John was hot, and the music was awesome. The album is still, in my opinion, the greatest soundtrack of all-time.
Xanadu was poor timing, and nothing else. Acting was top shelf. Dancing and music was every bit as good as SNF or Grease. It is just by 1980, between SNF, Grease, & Urban Cowboy, America was "burnt out" on musicals. Even Travolta went through a rough patch because of it. Xanadu was a terrific movie that never got it's much deserved due....
Robert Greenwald's "Xanadu" (1980) with Michael Beck along with Dame Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly in their next to last performances. Excellent music, including the 1981 Grammy-nominated "Magic" plus dazzling lighting, editing, sets, scoring adaptation, choreography, special effects and so much more that make this cult film an enjoyable fun loving experience. A Universal Release. (c)1980 Universal Studios.
This whole films addresses the funadmental human condition of self-aware consciousness, creativity and self doubt, all without ever failing to be fabulous. It's posibly my favourite film. I think being obsessed with this film as a kid informed the rest of my life. Literally if everyone just chilled out for a bit and danced around all floaty and cool the world would be a much nicer place.
Except that psychopaths are in control of the entertainment industry and everything in their system. They loath creativity and freedom of expression...2020 made that clear to those with eyes to see.
You get what they were trying to do. The whole is greater than the sum. Seems like we are in the minority!! There is a feeling i get watching this that reminds me of being a kid on the 70's. A delicious world that was out there that was being revealed to my "innocent" mind.
I'm with you guys! I have been sort of obsessed with this movie most of my life. It's a celebration of life and love mixed with myth and assorted musical genres. I absolutely LOVE this movie. But, yes. It seems we are the minority on this one.
Cheri Bunny. Your comment made me smile. It reminded me of the wondrous magic and innocence that this movie made me feel when i first watched it as a child. Thank you!

+Simon Deacon Ah Simon...you're not alone! I couldn't get enough of this movie when it came out - and especially this number! Alas yes, the 80's did end, but my love for them and this type of music never did. A lot of the stuff I listen to now is 'shaded' y the 80's! LOL. If you need some current 80's inspired cheese to listen to, just let me know!! :)
Thanks guys for all the awesome support! hehehee....did you know Muse Number 4 was in All That Jazz and also played Valeria in Conan the Barbarian? :-)
This movie is terrible. It's also one of my favorite things in the visible universe, and if I believed in a heaven, I'd picture it looking and sounding like this sequence. I heart you, you stupid movie.
This is the first thing I ever remember seeing in a movie theater...I mean this scene specifically, is the only thing I remember. I was 4 years old, it's a miracle that I remembered ANYTHING from that day. Also, I have always had an incredibly unnatural obsession with ELO since my childhood to this very day. I NOW get it!
Viciously panned by film critics when it first premiered... yet, what is it about "Xanadu" that's so rapturous? Critics who really can't get behind a genuine honest emotion brought on by a-feel-good-movie can be soooo cruel and really appear to be missing out on life! A guilty pleasure... sure, and why not? We all have at least one... don't we?
+John Shue This part was actually not. This part was done by the effects studio responsible for all the regular vfx in the movie. The animation sequence later on in the film set to ELO's Don't Walk Away is the sequence that was done by Don Bluth.
Sometimes I'm sad this was Gene Kelly's final film, but it appears he was having fun, and I'd like to think that he was. The film is completely inoffensive; it's fun if you don't take it seriously. And damn, but it's got a fantastic soundtrack!
The dance scene with Olivia and Gene Kelly is one of my favorites of the movie. I got choked up the first time I saw it and still get a little teary eyed everytime I watch that scene. Such a legend.

Most incredibly beautiful dancing sequence ever filmed! The ladies were stunning and their flowing moves captured in special effects were absolutely magical.
We all have our muses. One of mine happens to be Olivia and one of my favorite song-writers is Jeff Lynne. There are about twenty of each. Both are in the top fifty in my personal hierarchy of artists.
Now I know Jeff Lynne's name properly thank you I still stumble with spelling of people's names anyway with E.L.O this Soundtrack would not have been born.
The babe of the babes . I think every young buck in the 80 s had a thought of Olivia newton john as being the perfect girlfriend . 👍👍. I know I did , lol . What a beauty and a sweet girl .
Bought the original recording XANADU by ELO when it first came out. I listen to it when I need to feel uplifted from todays world with all its problems. Better times then and nicer kinder people. ELO and their music was right there with us with all their great songs pure talent.
I watched this movie as a teenager. I feel in love with the actors and music. It made me sad when Olivia Newton John died. She had the voice you will never forget. My thoughts go out to the family and friends. As long as we listen to her movies and watch her movies she will never be forgotten. Rest in peace you will be missed.
God I loved this movie... it gave me a love of roller skates and I even had the album. I know that as an adult I'm supposed to hate it, but nah.. it has a special place in my heart.
I love this movie. My uncle first showed me this movie when I was like 4 and ever since then I loved it so much I would always ask him if I could borrow his copy like weeks at a time lol. Definitely one of the best movies ever done.
Jeff Lynne is one of my favorite composers for Miss Newton-John in this plus for my other favorite soprano Agnetha Faltskog (the blonde in ABBA) - good times with pop down from Mr. J.S. Bach who started it all in a major way (big fan and player of his on some fairly large instrumentation - these remind me a lot of each other.....)
This movie, especially this scene, I’d say is one of the most beloved memories of my childhood. Hearing and seeing this brings back a whole range of emotions that encapsulate a time of life that I only realise now, being 40, that I miss and treasure so much. The thing I have noticed - the 1980s dopiness that was originally attributed to this film no longer seems to exist. Now people are seeing it, albeit with pretty clumsy CGI, as positive and inspiring. The fourth Muse that comes alive (at 0:40) is Sandahl Bergman who also played Valeria in Conan the Barbarian. You get a good look at her at 2:02 through 2:07. She BY FAR is the best dancer in the bunch.
the second muse on this clip who turns alive is not the same muse at the end of the movie I guess she was replaced by another muse whose hair is much longer. so I don't really know if it's her name here which you posted or the other one's else. Haven't anyone noticed that or only me? I consider this muse on this clip much more beautiful I'd love to see how she is now.
I still don’t understand why this movie failed. Ahead of its time or just not popular with the crowd back then. Xanadu was really something else to me, the soundtrack fit perfectly. Loved the dance and shadows of changes
thanks for the nice reply, i am so glad because i havent seen this in a while, and just love this segment of the movie with all the muses dancing, i wonder if they are all still alive today
Did you know this movie is an unofficial sequel to Down to Earth with Rita Hayworth? Rita played Terpsichore and has to leave suddenly at the end of the movie, thus the scene in Xanadu with Gene Kelly remembering back to the 1940's and dancing with Terpsichore.
JENDALL714 I didn't know that. I just saw Down to Earth on one of our local channels a couple of weeks ago. I noticed the similar theme of Rita being a Greek muse. Interestingly, Down to Earth is a sequel to the film Here Comes Mr Jordan. You know, I will never understand the Xanadu bashing that has taken place since it premiered. It's one of my all-time favorite movies and I'm extremely picky about the films I like. I guess people either don't understand it or they hear all the negativism and just fall in line with the naysayers.
Do I need therapy? I have a love for this song and the dancing girls. Is it because I'm queer and it's as queer as me? Please help me, it makes me so happy. Something must be wrong.
b vegan NOPE! Straight as a arrow here. (that is not queer in the vulgar sense) No therapy needed. If anything, this song/movie *IS* therapy. It has always made e feel *unreasonably* happy. There's no need to be "gay" the modern sense to feel "gay" in the classical sense.
The 9 daughters from Zeus... He was quite busy😂 I will always love this performance from these incredible dancers..( Especially from Sandahl Bergman, the blond, ballet- like dancer...she's amazing) Love how Olivia fit in this scene like a glove. Dreamy and beautiful
Ah neon pink, 80s and Olivia, best things in life. Some great songs in this movie, cheesy at times but that's what makes movies like this, the Pirate Movie and Grease 2 so great, cheesiness and great tunes! lol Xandu ftw!
Personally i thought this was a good movie, not great, but the soundtrack from this movie, how can you argue i mean ELO and Olivia Newton-John the music i graduated from high school with, very good
Same here! One of my Favourite Musical/Drama movie of the 1980s ... Olivia Newton ~John , Gene Kelly , Michael Beck & ELO Jeff Lynn >>> Just perfect for this light hearted movie that's a Classic now! XANADU Forever! 🌍♥️🌷🕊🕯
I'm alive! And the world shines for me today I'm alive! Suddenly I am here today Seems like forever, and a day Thought I could never feel this way Is this really me? I'm alive I'm alive I'm alive! And the dawn breaks across the sky I'm alive! And the sun rises up so high Lost in another world, far away Never another word till today But what can I say? I'm alive I'm alive I'm alive Suddenly came the dawn from the night Suddenly I was born into light How can it be real? I'm alive I'm alive I'm alive I'm alive! Xanadu is, without a doubt, the most CAMPY movie on record. However, I used to watch it over and over with my two young daughters and we LOVED IT! Plus, all that ELO music was/is just great.
I used to watch this as a child. Simply nostalgic. My favorite part of the movie. I thought she was the coolest because we have the same name. Always a big fan of Olivia Newton John!
I'm Alive and we're all professional level dancers except Kira (Olivia) but that's okay cause she's a professional level singer and the most charming of the bunch.
One of my VERY favorite albums. And I don't care who knows it

I beg to differ… the sound track to my life. My Mom introduced me… and I’ve LOVED it ever since. Born 78.It’s the best of all worlds.
I'm so glad the producers of Xanadu didn't hold back when it came to dance & musical talent. It's made the film stand the test of time
If people watch it for the first time, I'd tell them to watch it for the music and not the story.

Yes, very charismatic actors and performers. They selected very carefully for each and every role in this movie 🎬.
More talent in this scene than most movies today!

40 years later, and I still love this album and movie.
So much better than the twerking and choreographed hip hop bs today
I rather see dancing with genuine storytelling and expression
When I first saw this scene, not knowing what to expect, I though it was the most wonderful thing I'd ever seen.

Such a wonderful soundtrack. I am still in love with it!
an awesome innocent film, no sex, no violence, no drugs, just pure fun and great music.
I love Mr.Kelly
Loves from Hong Kong
It could've been much worse; his previous film was "Viva Knievel"! But I consider his final role to be "That's Entertainment pt 3", much more fitting.
The dance scene with Olivia and Gene Kelly is one of my favorites of the movie. I got choked up the first time I saw it and still get a little teary eyed everytime I watch that scene. Such a legend.
Xanadu, Flash Gorden and Empire Strikes Back are the films that defined this era in my childhood. Fucking loved it all!!!!

the second muse on this clip who turns alive is not the same muse at the end of the movie I guess she was replaced by another muse whose hair is much longer. so I don't really know if it's her name here which you posted or the other one's else. Haven't anyone noticed that or only me? I consider this muse on this clip much more beautiful I'd love to see how she is now.
+G Dogg check it out!this muse doesn t take part on the last clips unfortunately!
I still don’t understand why this movie failed. Ahead of its time or just not popular with the crowd back then. Xanadu was really something else to me, the soundtrack fit perfectly. Loved the dance and shadows of changes
I didn’t care for the movie much until I gave a second viewing.
Here watching this in 2019. I loved this movie when I was a young. It was always magical and enchanting to me aha
I have always loved this film!
Doug Gunderson yup
no one other than E.L.O. could have done the soundtrack for thnis film, still gives me chills to listen to the songs from this great film
Big Tom absolutely agree with you!
thanks for the nice reply, i am so glad because i havent seen this in a while, and just love this segment of the movie with all the muses dancing, i wonder if they are all still alive today
Big Tom brings back memories of my father taking me to see this in 1980 and probably asking himself what the heck he's watching
but the fact that Gene Kelly in this movie should have at least peaked his attention, what a great actor, and Olivia Newton- John was so mesmerizing
Big Tom true..probably the only reason he agreed to go..!! gene kelly..ELO..olivia newton john...something for everyone!
Is a fucking musical! Not a fucking drama! So get over it! Love the music! Love the movie!
Great dance movie
One of a number of Brilliant songs by Jeff Lynne for Xanadu, this being the Best.
Do I need therapy? I have a love for this song and the dancing girls. Is it because I'm queer and it's as queer as me? Please help me, it makes me so happy. Something must be wrong.
Lol
b vegan Nope, I'm straight, married, and love this movie and its music......
b vegan If you start a therapy group I'm in. Every time I'm in a good mood I have this song in mind, and sometimes I even dance.
TheGr81SLASH 100% Of chance u are gay as well
b vegan NOPE!
He was quite busy😂
I will always love this performance from these incredible dancers..( Especially from Sandahl Bergman, the blond, ballet- like dancer...she's amazing)
Love how Olivia fit in this scene like a glove.
One of the best artistic and imaginary films ever! Joyful!
I'm alive!
And the world shines for me today
I'm alive!
Suddenly I am here today
Seems like forever, and a day
Thought I could never feel this way
Is this really me?
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive!
And the dawn breaks across the sky
I'm alive!
And the sun rises up so high
Lost in another world, far away
Never another word till today
But what can I say?
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
Suddenly came the dawn from the night
Suddenly I was born into light
How can it be real?
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive!
And the world shines for me today
I'm alive!
Suddenly I am here today
Seems like forever and a day
Thought I could never feel this way
Is this really me?
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive!
Flaws and all...this movie is one of my unconditional loves of my life!! It just makes me happy.💖💖💖
This is my favorite movie of all time! Love Olivia Newton John!
Esse filme marcou minha pré-adolescência... Até hoje choro quando ouço as musicas... Simplesmente inesquecíveis....
Xanadu is, without a doubt, the most CAMPY movie on record. However, I used to watch it over and over with my two young daughters and we LOVED IT! Plus, all that ELO music was/is just great.
I always loved the Asian muse besides Olivia herself! Woof!
I used to watch this as a child. Simply nostalgic. My favorite part of the movie. I thought she was the coolest because we have the same name. Always a big fan of Olivia Newton John!
I love Xanadu, but whether someone likes it or not you have to admit that these special effects along with ELO's music is purely magical.
Sandahl Bergman effin ROCKS!!
jjflix79 She was, hands down, the BEST dancer in this group of ladies....BY FAR!
Yaas! Her turns are glorious!
Sandahl Bergman ❤️❤️❤️
I'm Alive and we're all professional level dancers except Kira (Olivia) but that's okay cause she's a professional level singer and the most charming of the bunch.
