- It’s time for an almighty hot hatch dyno test!
We’ve got our hands on four of the most popular hot hatches you can buy in 2023, and we’re about to find out just how accurate the manufacturers’ performance figures are in reality!
So let’s look at the line-up. First up it’s the Volkswagen Golf R, which is powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that can apparently put down 320hp and 420Nm of torque. Next up it’s the BMW, with a 3-litre straight-six turbo under the bonnet that’s good for 374hp and 500Nm.
Third in the line-up is the Audi RS3 saloon. It comes with a glorious 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo, which is good for 400hp and 500Nm. And finally, we have the most powerful car in the line-up, the AMG A45 S. It’s equipped with a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo which should be producing 421hp and 500Nm.
Will any cars outperform their claimed figures? Or even worse, will any underperform?! Stick with Mat for this dyno drag race to see for yourself!

I'm the owner of the AMG A45S. It turns out that after investigation by Mercedes that the car had a faulty cooling pump, which has just been changed and car is being tested by the AMG experts. fingers crossed full power will be restored!
But despite the disappointing results, it was a great day and was a pleasure to meet Mat, the team and the other car owners!
Fingers crossed i can bring the car back to another CARWOW video in the future, running the full power!
i Knew it was you!
Amazed you fit in it ;)
Thanks for the update
Ah glad they are sorting it.
Do a dyno again!
It would also be interesting to see a video of old cars to see how much horse power they still have after many years.
Modern engines really dont lose much like they did 30 years ago or more. It wouldnt be that interesting. Its like a couple of %.
@@sheilamorrison1954 They would make quite a bit less power than advertised not because they're old, but because they're naturally aspirated. Manufacturers' power figures for NA engines are always "best case scenario" numbers.
There is actually a lot of this kind of videos on youtube, but there is not too much of it with cars that are between 3-10 y.o.. I think that would be pretty interesting, especially with high performance cars and hothatches with smaller engines.
Top Gear did that years ago
Yess this would be intresting. BMW,Audi, mercedes and Porsche. It's own decade most powerful versions example year 2005 models
Would love to see a drag race between all these cars after they have been on the dyno. To see how the differences on the dyno carries over...
Agreed.
agreed
It’s been done but without the vw
Dyno to track same vid pls👍🏻
Torque delivery at rpm vs weight is pretty important in how quick a car feels.
You have to do this with that Merc A35 sometime. That was just bonkers quick in that drag race despite the owner saying it was stock.
Yea but it wasn’t
“Stock” that shit was tuned and we know it
It 100% was not stock
It beat the other cars in the drag race but on the dyno it has so little power? Yeah something doesn't add up here. I'd think the owner has a tune for it and put it back to a "stock" tune which is somehow worse than factory.
I have personally driven the car and its a piece of crap! My M340i is so so much better to drive! That B58 engine is a gem!
LOVE this dyno drag series!! Please keep more coming
We now need to do this now with older-gen cars. I've got an E46 M3, would love to see it on the dyno + compared to other vehicles :)
Great video, and props to all the owners!
def need to get another A45S on the dyno
Agree..or it might need a service
They should, but not needed at all, just a quick search on AMG forums will do the trick, and we came to the conclusion that this is pretty "normal".
You can’t accept that mercedes is screwing their customers?
@@boneszy because in actual DRAG RACE A45S faster than other .. -80 something is weird !! merc can't possibly make a fatal mistake in CLAIM, the difference between actual and dyno is too much, there could be an error and maybe wrong MODE during testing.

Nice! Mat bringing the content that the people want to see. Well done.
This is a great little series. Keep these coming.
I'd be interested to know why their torque figures were so much higher than their power in matching the manufacturers claims.
@@zakelwe well thats nice.
@@zakelwe cause overboost
im ngl this is prolly one of the best inclusions on carwow other than the drag races fr!
Facts💯
@@jaydenandrews02 Should have shown WHP too instead only calculated crank hp.
So would have seen which car puts most power to the ground and how much power is lost
Keep doing these dyno races, lot of fun to watch and for sure has very useful real info
First time I've seen another Milind in comments 🤛
That dyno series is super interesting, pls keep it up❤️
They always keep this up.
one of the best series.. good job Mat keep this going :D
One thing I like with this video Matt went straight to the point 👍
Love these kind of videos to add to the drag races!
I love these new dyno videos 👌🏼👌🏼
Man im happy you added this in your videos. Very nice insight into all cars.
I’d be keen to see another A45S on the dyno for confirmation be that’s way off, the other three though were impressive 👍🏼
Yes, maybe there is some problem with the engine. It would be a huge risk for Mercedes to claim wrong horse power numbers.
@@addygreen8919 agree. merc can't possibly make a fatal mistake in CLAIM, the difference between actual and dyno is too much, there could be an error and maybe wrong MODE during testing.
The owner just commented, apparently the cooling pump was faulty, which has bogged down the performance
I was team mercedes but of late this video just proves the point they have lost the German touch it came to be known for. Now am on the Audi side.
@@michaelgathemia the owner did post a comment that his car was not quite right when the video was made, hence the lower numbers. He’s trying to get it on the dyno again when it’s sorted.
I’m with you in that merc isn’t what it used to be, but imo neither is Audi/VW. I’d have Merc over a VAG car
I don't feel that bad about the M240i, once I remember it's meant to compete against the S3 and A35
It's pricepoint reflects that too.
With that much hp and torque? How is that competing with the A35/S3 😅
Heck with a couple clicks on a laptop, you can make the power of those other cars with no mods at all.
Up here the M240i is quite a bit more expensive than the other 2 though
@@DnBDubstepManiak1 it’s an M240, not an M2, just like S3 & RS3, A35 & A45S.
Mat thank you so much for this insane video!
In love with the RS3
I quite like this series, and especially comparing the same league along with the owner’s interaction!
Please talk about wheel HP! This is what really matters! The "adjustment factors" used are unlikely to be very accurate. Either way, keep it up! I love watching dyno runs and the weight of cars!
Only fair way to do it 👍
You can't use wheel hp to compare to the factory crank numbers... But the could give both.
That's the issue with European dynos, they do too much of the conversion and thinking for you. Therefore, when the cars come to the US they are all considered underrated by our tests, done by our regulatory board in the US, which is SAE. All the cars in the video have about 15-20% more than they are suppose to. If you do a proper calibration of our dynos which is based on the actual and real definition of hp, our dynojet is correct, and that's the one that SAE uses, and it's to the wheels, which SAE then calculates the crank hp for the manufacture. Europe and their dynomax is forcing all cars to have more hp than they did prior to 2006, which is when SAE came in and tried to put a stop to the overrated and underrated cars. In 2006, most Japanese cars turned out to be overrated and had to be rerated down about 4%, while the European cars were all underrated and nothing was done because you got more than you asked/paid for. Now-a-days everything has gone underrated, even the Japanese cars... why, because they have to compete with the underrated european cars. Completely confuses people. Why have ratings, if they mean nothing. If drivetrain losses are 14% FWD, 17% RWD, and 20% AWD... but the car is underrated by 15-20%, what's the point in trying to explain to people that there are losses, but then the extra power basically cancels out the losses. Europe is winning this battle of what is correct, not because science and physics says so, but because they are wrong in the extra power direction. It's like having more money, and you are correct not because it's the fact, but because you have more money... and that's a fact. FREAKIN JUST RATE THE DAMN CAR CORRECTLY! IF YOU NEED A PHYSICS BOOK, GO GET ONE!
Yeah, I've been a bit weirded out by how much they're just glossing over all that. Plus, drivetrain losses matter for real-world performance so there's no reason to not measure wheel horsepower directly instead of assuming drivetrain losses are constant.
If the dyno is adding circa 15% to each run then it doesn't matter as all runs have the same adjustment
Love these dyno comparisons! Please do more!
great type of videos, keep making them!
It's funny because I am planning to put stage 1 ECU tune on my Astra GTC at Onyx Performance because they are literally around the corner from my house, seeing Mat at their garage gives me even more confidence in these guys!
Sheeeesh! Been looking forward for this❤
These are really good videos - more of these mate
This is a fantastic addition to the videos already on the channel
Need some supercars and electric cars on there! Also older cars and how much do they lose over time
Next time show wheelhorsepower stats on every car because it's interesting to see the drivetrain losses as well.
DL=(EHP−WHP)/EHP∗100, Where DL is the drivetrain loss (%). Everything goes from this standard formula so it's hard to get reliable results between different cars. It's best to compare the same cars with different drivetrains.
@@bielmelichartes2167 losses aren’t assumed, they’re calculated during the rundown. It’s not 100% accurate, but the error will be consistent.
WHP numbers are on the dyno screen when they show
@@bielmelichartes2167 not impossible. Just a lot of work to get the engine out and and put it on an engine Dyno.
The dyno numbers they show are just a calculation, it reads WHP then converts it to Crank HP using a % that the company choose (they can make the Crank HP show anything on the screen)
08:06 It was at this moment Zain realised that Matt did not want to shake his hand.
This new series is awesome!
I think these are the best videos!!! Keep em coming
I really like these new style of videos! keep it up Carwow team!
More dyno drags please🙌
Yesssss fun to see more of these videos! love them!
Absolute best video series... please more of this!!!!
A bit embarrassing for the Merc… down on both power and torque, but up on weight. Now I understand why it lost the drag race to the RS3….
merc can't possibly make a fatal mistake in CLAIM, the difference between actual and dyno is too much, there could be an error and maybe wrong MODE during testing.
Mine was almost perfectly on par with the claimed numbers though 😅

Now we need to know how the A35 was so fast on stock
he was TUNED you idiot. don't blindly believe the owner, it was tuned wether he knew it or not
It was obviously tuned. It performed in line with a tune only A35/CLA35.
I don’t buy for a second that it was stock

@@PapiAndrey but it was under powered?
Yeah it's absolute bogus that it had those numbers when they did the drag race haha :D this guy is a ****
Also interesting to see the fuel they have in when doing the dyno run . As seen in others, not all 99Ron are the same.
please do more videos like this. Love them
Loving this series
I would love to see a dyno comparison between the OG M2, M2C and M2CS. The power delivery differences would be really interesting; peak-prod. N55 vs peak-prod S55. I would love to see some realistic weights too. Thanks!
Add also Opel Calibra.
Like these videos, I also think it would be good to see what BHP modified cars are putting out against what their owners claim 👀 😂 would be very interesting
Agreed. Add Toyota GTONE for this Dyno Drag Race.
I have this 1000HP gtr!

Loving these type of videos. Need to drag race them all at the end to see if any of this matters haha
I would like you to compare the beat fwd hot hatches like the Type R, i30N DCT, GTI etc.
Nowhere near as fun to watch as the normal drag races! It would be awesome to do the dyno. before doing the actual drag race!!! That would be perfect!!!!! 😊
these new Carwwow videos are something else well done mat!!

You are my best vloger(Carwow). Thanks for advice
This isn’t a vlog lol
Yes show cars that we can afford .with rest of videos we just dream 💭
Great series!
lovin the Dyno stuff
I think you also need to account for the "torque to weight ratio" of these cars, as that too plays a role in acceleration.
(PTWR + TTWR) / 2 should give you a good idea.
Absolutely loved the last dyno video, and luckily my all time fav sedan M5 Comp won the test 🔥, keep creating these dyno run videos 😍
What are you talking m5?

Its really hard to settle on that A45s result because I love their engine so much. More test on them Mat!
5 cylinder audi has a suoperior engine though.. can't beat that exhaust sound
Owner posted comment saying there was a problem with the Merc which is why it didn't perform.

Very nice and interesting videos these are!
I think it will be very good idea to drag race the cars after all the testing to see if actual figures meet the reality.
That Rs3 is a machine!
Bmw m240 is almost as fast and i just and Mlight car imagine the m2
@@vikinnorway6725 and far cheaper. A $500 Jb4 on pump gas puts it at est. 450 crank.
Yes, but i like the rs3 more. Looks better and sounds good
@@flstudiotutorials1057 I would say the rs3 is the least controversial design, that few would call it ugly. I think it’s just too conservative other than flashy colors. If I’m spending $70k on a car, I don’t want a flashy colored least offensive four door sedan. But that’s my opinion. Otherwise it’s a hell of a car. I do think my modded m240i looks better though.
@@Bimmer_Bill i respect that😊
It would be nice to know what trim level the cars have for the weight. If they have some carbon package, that obviously reduces weight, same with going with the cheapest one where you don't get a lot of the features which normally would add weight, etc.
Not to mention it would be interesting to know the weight difference between the cheapest and most expensive trims of the same car, although probably a bit too much to ask when cars are sourced from private owners, rather than manufacturers themselves.
What a great episode. Really tells the story. Love the Audi.
Liking these videos keep them coming pls😁
I really wanna see those plug in hybrid cars like Volvo T8, where they just straight up lie lol

You should do this test for EVs. It'd be interesting to know what the power curves are like on these EVs.
probably need two full charges to film 3 pulls like this
@dennyh66 depending on the power output and battery size the SOC may not change that much. Something like a model s plaid will likely drain that fast but something like a model 3 performance or a bmw i4 may not. Battery Temps may be the most challenging thing to control
My favourite series!
