    This is hands down the best explanation of the AKG C3000 history. I was turned onto this model by a peer that owns a few. With his endorsement and your explanation, I bought one, and then another for my brother, and another one for my use as a stereo pair. Thank you!

    Very interesting! Thank you! I've always wondered about the differences, and like you, discovered discrepancies.
    I have a C3000B (silver) I bought new many years ago. Since that time I've come to the conclusion that most microphones sound different and are useful for different applications, including my own singing style and the type of song I'm singing on.

      Thanks for watcing and commenting . . . I'm glad I was able to help - I prefer the early black version and the slightly later silver version both with switchable polar patterns. I own a bunch of them. Although to be fair, I use the newer model infrequently, I only own 1 "modern" version. I am going to try to make a vid about the AKG c2000b soon, the price on those is dropping fast - very nice mic for the cost in my experience. - peace

    I have owned the C3000B for nearly 20 years now. It is my go-to secret weapon for recording hand drums like djembe and doumbek. It's the first mic I ever tried to use for recording such drums, and my first impression was it was way too easy to get a fantastic sound. Tried other more expensive / reputable mic's for this same purpose and realized quickly there was no point in searching any further. So lively and full sounding. Good for drum overhead, and a brighter acoustic guitar tone as well.

    This video was a helpful explanation! In the 90s(?) I had an AKG c3000b which I stupidly sold and I regretted it ever since. In spite of the bad reviews, the mic was amazing. Maybe it was the timbre of my voice, but it captured it perfectly - I just sounded really great with that mic. (This was the c3000b model with one direction, and switches on the side.)

    • @redcabinacoustic-official

      It's really great on some voices for singing, and strings. I like it on acoustic guitars, cellos, violas, etc. and I've seen it used effectively on drums for jazz and blues. I have not tried it for broadcasting; we have RE-27NDs in the air and production studios, and RE-20s in the newsroom. Those rooms stink acoustically AND have too much ambient noise to use a condenser mic. If you were in a quiet treated studio I think they would be fine as I use them for spoken word voice work - for some characters. I have not used it all that much as I got my first c3000b spring just after everything shut down.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I have recently used the newer models and I have not found a significant difference in sound on the sources I was recording; the one I used was great. At some point I should should dissect them to see the difference. If I understand you correctly, you have an original black w/green stripe model, which should have a multiple polar pattern switch center rear - that has an externally biased condenser capsule, the black and silver model has an electret capsule. AKG made electret capsules great, electret capsules have a bad reputation because they are easier to manufacture and are in a lot of crappy electronics. Some very good mics have electret capsules. If you take care of them they will take care of you. peace

    Any idea when the c3000b was discontinued? I'm trying to identify the age of my mic. I got it second hand. It had terrible muffled sound and an unbearable noise floor, but I opened it and found one of the two wires from the capsule was disconnected. It was delicate work but I stripped the wire, soldered it back, and then cleaned the gold capsule sensor with a soft brush and distilled water. Despite impatiently sending 48v through a probably still damp microphone, it sounded better than I could've hoped. Anyway it's no legendary c414 xls but I've grown attached now that I've put in some care. Side note: I had to remove the foam from inside the grill. It was deteriorating to the point that it crumbled to the touch and fibers would shake loose. No one sells replacement foam that's shaped to fit but I've been doing alright without it and I think it may even be more clear and bright, but it's too late to do any A/B testing.

The c3000b was given to me by a friend who got it in a 'lot purchase' of used gear. He listened to it, didn't like it, then stashed it for a few years. I might ask your contact for that foam but I don't have $10 to my name at the moment.... I'm just curious the age.

      I just did a quick search of the places I but used gear. Prices are about $200 USD for the ones I see listed. The models I'm looking at are early versions of the c3000b, with shock mounts, in good shape, made in Austria. The older Austrian made mics in good shape seem to hold their value better. The earliest models did not come with shock mounts as they have "suspended capsules," I think they began including shock mounts because customers like them. Although I don't know if that continues to be true. Sorry for the tangent, but VALUE is a fickle thing, an original box with documentation is a sign that the mic was taken care of and is therefore more likely to be "Like New." A clean box and original mic clip and/or shock mount really helps. check eBay, Reverb.com, Guitar Center Used Gear, etc.

    Love my C3000B but have no idea how to use it properly but somehow i get through it. I have aquestion though if I may. What position would I most likely want the two switches in ( up or down) for doing voiceover? My voice is deep and I work about 4-6” away from the pop screen. Great video by the way, thank you.

      For VO there should be no reason to use the PAD, so it should be in the up or 0 dB position, meaning no attenuation. The "High Pass Filter" or "Bass Roll Off" as it is also known, should also be in the up or off position. Unless you have an incredibly beep voice, and/or you have rumble in your recording space. This could be from traffic, HVAC, and/or other household noise. VO should not create a use case for the switches in most cases. As for using this mic for VO it may depend on your space and delivery and of course the type of read you were performing. I tend to start with large diaphragm condensers at mouth level and place them at a 45 degree angle - between my mouth and my left ear. I will practice reading with the mic at this position until I find the proper distance and I like the sound. The next position I try is placing the diaphragm at the height of my left eyebrow at the distance I found to be most pleasant, clear, full, and rich. Of course it depends on the read. I rarely speak directly into the diaphragm. Does any of that make sense? Try it and let me know. If you want to hear someone using this for VO check out this link - it's also about audio . . . ruclips.net/video/qonbJHkxH8w/видео.html

    • @redcabinacoustic-official
      @redcabinacoustic-official  2 года назад +1

      I don't currently own one, so I can only guess based on my experience with the mics in this line.
      In an article in MIX magazine in 2000 they state, "On vocals and acoustic guitar, the 2000B is a solid performer. With the mic positioned six to eight inches from the vocalist (and about half that distance for the guitar) with the -10dB on, the mic produced a warm, clear, uncluttered sound with a slight midrange boost."
      I have used the C1000S for narration and the C3000B and C4000B for voiceover, so I think the C2000B would work - especially for a podcast. Of course it depends on the cost. I have MANY AKG mics, mostly bought used, for a better price than new, and have been pleased with all based on cost for performance.

      In this video the mic is boomed above me.
      Any mic can be boomed technically. I know folks use them for drum overheads. With that being said I boom mine for voice all the time. It depends on the space acoustics and the quality of the source, the space/distance between the mic and source, and the volume. At 2-3 feet you may get more room sound than direct sound - try it and see what happens. Is this for narrative film or podcasting/video?I often use LDCs out of frame. The AKG c1000s has a narrow pick-up pattern. I think Curtis Judd did a video comparing a shotgun and a pencil condenser and maybe something else. Thanks for watching.

    Interesting.. I have 3000b>> quick dumb question... is there a difference from singing into front as opposed to reverse side?

    • @redcabinacoustic-official
      @redcabinacoustic-official  2 года назад

      No such thing as a dumb question. The original version is switchable between Cardioid and Hyper-Cardioid and the second iteration is a fixed Cardioid. So if you were to sing or speak or record anything into the "reverse side" you would be trying to record into the null side of the pattern. You would likely get a very weak signal comprised of reflected sound from the room. The off axis sound would be relatively quiet and heavily colored and probably not useful. Make sense?

      @@leonmorgan1158 Yep! - of course mic technique and source may dictate that the mic be aimed at the source but slightly off axis - to help eliminate plosives for example. With that being said I know engineers that will record an instrument off-axis as well to modify frequency response.

      @@leonmorgan1158 I have not recorded a guitar cabinet with this mic, but I seen no reason why is would not work. Capsule placement, (relative to the cone), source volume, distance, direction, etc. all have an effect on the sound the mic hears on a cabinet. Condenser Mics can be overloaded and distorted by high SPLs so using the pad may be advised depending on placement and genre. This mic, (depending on the vintage and model), has a pretty high SPL limit. Current production model has a MAX SPL of 155dB.

      I have no idea from direct comparison? I own and use a variety of RØDE microphones, but not the NT1-A. A quick search found a few RUclips comparisons - don't know how useful they are. - I don't generally think of mics being better than one another; instead I think of mics being good for something or less good for something. Both of these mics are a bit boosted in the high end - that "Modern Sound" but nothing too crazy. The NT1-A's high frequency bump is a bit above 10K and the new c3000 has a bump just under 10k Hz - so it depends on the source and room - ALSO, from a quality standpoint I can say the RØDEs I have are awesome - and I can ALSO say that about the AKGs as well, BUT I only own older AKGs. Thanks for watching and asking - If I can borrow an NT1-A I'll do a comparison.

      @@pure-studio A couple of things - the P120 is probably at the bottom of the AKG P/Perception line - Any of the other mics in that series would likely be a better fit. - ruclips.net/video/LkWP_ez319g/видео.html - the c3000 is also an upgrade. The AT2020 has a capsule that is .63 inches in diameter and the AKG P120 has a capsule that is .66 inches in diameter - both medium diaphragm condensers. Both are known to be of good quality for the cost, they are also known for being very articulate. The AT2020 is very popular for young artists recording Rap, Hip Hop, and other fast sung and spoken word content because that crispness helps with intelligibility. On women and tenors this may be too much. I often mix match microphones to voices, including my own. My voice lacks much air or upper frequencies, so I will pick a mic that includes those without over-boosting the low end. I have a client that has a high voice that gets squeaky sometimes; I'll reach for a mic without too much top end to mellow him out. Small and medium diaphragm condensers do have a purpose, and when they are OK AND cheap they are popular, but maybe not right for you. Anton Browne does mic reviews and usually includes, "Your voice is not my voice and your choice is not (necessarily) my choice," when referring to mic choices. peace
