  • The Facility Nashville Presents - The AKG C3000 Sessions
Recorded at The Facility Nashville Tuesday 13th November 2018 using only AKG C3000 microphones.
Over the past few months I've been buying up used AKG C3000 microphones manufactured between 1993 - 1999. These mics originally retailed for around $749 in the US. The average price paid for the 10 mics used during this session was around $110.
    Mic Setup
Piano - 2 Mics approximately 6 inches above the strings
    Drums - 5 mics : Kick, Snare, 2 Overheads & 1 Room mic
Bass - 1 mic at about 20 inches off the floor between top of the 'F' hole and the fingerboard
    Vocal - 1 mic approximately 6 - 10 inches from vocalist
Each microphone is using a Vintech 573 preamp before going into a UAD Apollo 16 (Silverface)
The audio in this recording has no plugins or effects added with the exception of a small amount of EMT140 Plate Reverb (UAD Plugin). What you are hearing is as it was recorded directly from the microphones.

This video clearly shows why the original C3000 is a stellar overlooked mic. The C3000b and the latest attempt AKG offers are not the same as the original C3000. I have owned a C3000 since 2001, I bought a C3000b to compliment it because the C3000 was no longer available, I took it back to the store the next day! The B version is No Where Close to being what the original C3000 is. I don't know why they came out with any other variations because as you here in this video - they NAILED IT the 1st time around

I've accumulated three AKG c3000 microphones from the 90s, primarily for drum use, after first seeing this video. I got them before their popularity increased recently and their prices went up. Definitely a valuable investment - these mics are fantastic! 👌

I just bought my first AKG C3000 ('90s Austrian) and this video reaffirms my pal's recommendation to pick one up. I think I have at least another in my future. They should work great on my brother's Ayotte kit for overheads. Thank you for demoing the mics on this sesh. What a great reference from double bass, piano, drums, and voice. I am quite certain it will sound lovely on my violao (classical guitar).

These mics still stand up to the modern mics and at a fraction of the cost...for now. I predict the cost of these will slowly rise. Thanks for listening :)

woah. I have this mic since 1998 (my first condenser mic) and all but had abandoned it due to public opinion and my garbage rooms and engineering skills. But your mic placement, room, and engineering on this have thoroughly changed my mind. wow.

Great job. I have 2 of the "B" versions with the single switch. I'm thinking of saving money from buying a shotgun mic and just one of these over head for video work and see how it does. I'm going to have it just out of frame about 2.5' away. Hope it works.

To my ears the AKG C3000 blows mics like SM7B out of the water, of course it depends on application. Perhaps the Shure is better for screamers while the C3000 is better for talkers.

The AKG c3000 B was a highly underrated microphone, and asI understand it - the current generation of the AKG c3000 is the same as the 3000b from the late 90s. This video sounds outstanding.

Search for a channel called red cabin acoustic he explains the different versions of this mic. HIGHLY confusing. Akg fucked up more than once and made a world of confusion.

@@terryvargo7720 Thanks Terry, I should have read the video description. I saw the row of mics and assumed this was promo for the newer c3000 models and as you pointed out, it isn't! I've always been scared to buy used mics, but maybe the prior use will add to the color... I'd like to get one of these older model c3000s.

Did you do any mods to these mics, for example removing the foam in front of the capsule or removing a layer of mesh from the headbasket? And were these tracks recorded in cardiod or hypercardiod?

    • @theengineeratthefacilityna2827

So, comparability to the versions made since? And please be realistic! I’m looking at some of the newer production models going for like $100-150 used, and I’m feeling like I’m not gonna find a better overall LDC in *THAT* price range 🤷🏼‍♂️😕

    • @theengineeratthefacilityna2827
      @theengineeratthefacilityna2827  3 года назад +3

@@Texturas75 I think they're undervalued for sure. But folks are slowing realizing that they're great mics. If you can get one in good condition with the original case and mic clip then $180 is probably a good price. I was lucky to get in early on these and paid on average $110.....so $180 is still a good price.
