Aston Element vs EV re20 vs Shure sm7b vs Neat King Bee vs MXL R80

My first impression of the Aston Element was that it was "dark," so I thought I should empirically check that by comparing to other mics. The Neat King Bee was added for flavor. cool video. i bought my c2000b back in 2005 and been using it since then. great mic.
Good to hear! I really like mine. I just got a c4500d-BC, so I need to make that video!
AudioHaze?
Nope, not AudioHaze, Weird Sister.
A different songwriter hippie dude! lol
Hi, thanks for this review, I am currently using the Goxlr mini with the Shure mv7, should I use any of these FetHeads? Thanks I am a audio newbie
Thanks for watching and commenting . . . To be honest I don't think you NEED one. The GoXLRs have decent high output/low noise preamps. So if this is your set-up, nope. If you had a noisy preamp, then maybe . . . some folks like the sound of the Germanium FetHead - I use it on some dynamic mics for some types of copy. In this open I used a Germanium with a RE 320 - audio at 0:18 to 0:22 - soundcloud.com/historyofhardstyle/history-of-hardstyle-podcast-episode-001 You should not need one to any gain. peace
I jumped on this video because I ordered a fethead and received a fethead germanium, I wasnt sure if that was a good thing or not. Seems like it is. More gain and vintage sound? Let's see I guess. I wanted to find out before I cracked the seal. Sounds like it's a good thing. So I will test it out. Many thanx, subscribed
Thanks for watching, commenting, and of course for the sub! I use my FetHead Ge often. I really like it. peace
Omg yes!
*SUPERB VIDEO!!! THANK YOU* #cheers
Thanks for watching and commenting. I truly appreciate it! Working on some new vids, keep in touch.
Amazing video! Thank you!!!
You are most welcome! Thank You for watching and commenting. I appreciate it; hope to be making more vids soon. peace
Thanks for this thorough view of this amazing mic. 👌
Thanks for watching and commenting. I plan to make a vid about utility; context of use AND some custom widgets. peace
I own 2 B MKII's. I can't imagen capturing audio without them. I use them for most applications, from recording instruments to streaming audio. The C100s is a workhorse mic. Thanks for the history of these wonderful microphones
Thanks so much fro watching and commenting. I truly appreciate it. I plan to make a couple more videos on the c1000s, so stay tuned. peace
The specs aren't the same anymore, now it says it has "GOLD-PLATED 25MM LARGE-DIAPHRAGM," not 32mm.
Yeah, there have been a couple of different capsules in these any other models from the manufacturer
@@redcabinacoustic-official Do you think 25mm version will make a noticeable difference? In the test you did, I actually like the Shure KSM 27 better, the Fong Dong sounds like it's hissing or has a noise in the middle of speech.
@@user-ku3sx8lo1g First, Thanks for watching and commenting. Second the Shure condensers are quite nice, and not cheap so it's an unfair comparison. As for 25 vs 32 mm they are both "large diaphragm condensers" and the differences are more likely to be the quality of the capsule and other components and/or the circuit topology. My personal opinion is that people incorrectly have a bias towards large condensers because they think bigger is always better, NOT. Also many of the reasons that LDCs were popular in the past are less relevant today. peace
Again great video! My go to mic is the AKG Solidtube, which basically looks like a longer c4000b. Would you say it also belongs to the same series?
Thanks for watching and commenting . . . I'm not looking at my notes but I do believe the capsules are very similar, but the c4000b has a double sided capsule and the electronics are obviously different, tube vs solid state. I don't have a SoliTube, but it's on my list. I do have a RØDE NTK . . . I just checked my notes . . . the serial number for the SoliTube capsule is 2512Z0003, which is different than that of the c4000b - 2512M9904. Maybe the SoliTube capsule is the one-sided version of a similar capsule? peace
Huge fan of the AKG C-Series line. Thanks for sharing all these videos. 🙌

@@redcabinacoustic-official Awesome! I’m here for it. 👍
@@redcabinacoustic-official Hi sorry to bother. I have 2 options AKG p150 and Behringer B-5. Need for casual voiceovers and online teaching. Which is better for voice ?
@@TheFinalRevelation2 - No Bother! I am humbled to help, I'm a teacher and make these vids to be helpful. I do have a couple of questions for you - Do you own either mic yet? I was wondering how or why you settled on these 2 mics. I only ask because most people seem to prefer Large Diaphragm Condensers for voice work. Both of these are Small Diaphragm Condensers, but you likely know that. They both can work, and I think they both could work well. The B-5 may be easier to boom overhear and because it is smaller would take up less room onscreen. The B-5 will need a good windscreen or 2. I sometimes double layer my pencil condensers if I use them for voice. The AKG is probably a better quality mic, and I think is a bit better, but might not matter depending on your use case, voice, room, etc. Where I am in the US the all of the AKG Perception series mics can be picked up used very inexpensively. Hope that helps, where are you? Maybe you can try a couple of different mics to help you choose. peace
@@redcabinacoustic-official Just picked a used AKG perception 150 yesterday night. Slept late because of it. Ground humming issue. Doesn't occur when the laptop is running off my battery or by holding the mic or connected the interface to the USB port of my monitor. Got 2 PCs. Occurs on my other PC with a cheaper motherboard. My wiring is high quality but there is no earth wire in most rooms. My room is strange, there is not much use treating it so I cannot use a sensitive condenser mic. My guess is that partial treatment will not work in it, since it is already filled, its the design perhaps. I was impressed for the tone of the AKG one for my voice. Seemed to be amazing and less plosively for me. Checked it in someone's studio. He was using it to record some female vocals. I guess I'll buy a handheld XLR recorder and use it in my bed room cause I can't return it. Please tell me a cheaper solution to solve the grounding issue. The isolated USB converter is not available here in Pakistan. Importing it will cost me more.
One video that explains all types of FetHeads. I ended up here looking which FetHead to buy after being presented with all sorts of FetHeads at different prices. Great explainer! This will certainly help anyone who's as confused as me.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I made it for that exact reason; to explain, not necessarily to sell. I still hope to create some other videos speaking to use cases of some of the models/types. I use the FetHead Germanium with my Elecro-Voice RE320 for some VO jobs . . . peace
@@redcabinacoustic-official Nice! That would take your already-warm voice to another level. Have you used it to record the audio for this video?
I have p 170, I like it for the price, on my tenor sax makes some notes sound a bit honkey. I'm liking another cheap SDC for my tenor CAD GXL 1200
Excellent explanation and I look forward to the follow-up video. Subbed! If you have any thoughts on the Dorsey DIY modification method, to alter the mid-high frequency gain boost mentioned online, that would be interesting too.
Thanks for watching, commenting, and for the sub. I really appreciate it. Mic Mods are interesting and I have many thoughts. Probably too many for a response and maybe a vid is in order. I have spent many hours with a soldering pencil in my hand, and I think that everyone that depends on electronics and by extension, (no pun intended), cables should know how to solder. I only mention this to encourage all to expand their skill sets . . . I have seen and heard a variety of mic mods and the results vary greatly. I don't do them often, but have been planning to "upgrade" an MXL 990. Why? I got it for almost nothing and want to see if I can make it better. I have also seen the vids and articles about the AKG Perception Mods. I may do this mod with a twist . . . I plan to install a switch so I can choose to insert the old cap or new cap in the circuit. peace
@@redcabinacoustic-official Agreed its good to have some basic skills. My Synology DS415+ NAS died after 4 years of use. Opened it up, soldered a resister and it was back from the dead and still running nearly six years later.
I like my c2000b Austrian made on my sax, sounds similar to the rode NT1(not A) a tiny bit more warm

@@redcabinacoustic-official No not yet. Someday lol!
Was never a fan of these mics. I have the original c3000 "first gen" (maybe that should be "Erste") and love that. Never knew why I didnt chime with the 2000/4000 range.
Thanks for watching and commenting. You are obviously not alone, they did not sell the numbers that the 1000 and 3000 had. Also the 4000 was surpassed in quality by the 414 and the 2000 is maybe just too niche for the cost. If you can pick either up for a decent price, and you actually record regularly, they can be a useful tool. Peace
@@redcabinacoustic-official I've a couple of 414s too. Was my fave until the 818 came along, now its between those two. I do wonder if the 2000/4000 suffer the slight boxy nature off axis that you get in the 414s. They're always cheap on ebay too
This is hands down the best explanation of the AKG C3000 history. I was turned onto this model by a peer that owns a few. With his endorsement and your explanation, I bought one, and then another for my brother, and another one for my use as a stereo pair. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and commenting; I really appreciate it. I'm glad that it is/was helpful. I think this is a really good and often overlooked treasure. If you found my page you probably know I have an explanation of the AKG c1000s as well. The video of the 2000 and 4000 should be out later this summer, (2024). peace
Is this just a rebeanded Bai Fei Li v10?
Thanks for watching and commenting - I think they probably come/came out of the same factory, but I don't know which came first or if either mic is the original? If you know or find out let me know. I heard of the Fang Dong before I heard of BFL, but that is not proof on anything. There also seems to be some variations on these mics being sold, OR the specs are wrong or are intentionally misleading, peace
Great info - thank you!
Are all P-series using the same guts? In other words, is the mod the same by changing out one capacitor? I have only seen the p420 modded. ty
Thanks for watching and commenting! The Perception 120 has an electret capsule and the P120 has an externally biased capsule, so those circuits are different. That doesn't mean it can't be done, but the circuits are different. Here is a good discussion you may have seen - groupdiy.com/threads/akg-perception-p220-to-neumann-u87-5-min-mod-p200-p100-p400-p420.67473/ - I have found I can get the sound I want by using a multi-band compressor, but may mod one of mine soon just to try it, but I intend to install a switch so I can use either cap. The nice things about the multi-band compressor is that I can match it to the source; a very popular de-esser BTW. I should make a video about that . . . Capsule swaps are also popular for this model, but for the money really a good mic. Let me know how it goes. peace
@@redcabinacoustic-official That's what I was thinking. I am going to run it through an old Art compressor and even Warm's ToneBeast and see or hear what it produces sound wise. What multi-band Compressor are you using, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for the link. The p420 is a solid mic. Due to the weight of it, I plan on running/bolting an extension arm from the ceiling beam. TY
Thanks
You are most welcome.
Yeah. Same mic as the BaiFeiLi V10. There's more said about those but That's the parent company for them and their 414 is the same like as the BFL C414. The list price is ridiculous though. Not that it doesn't sound good for that price too. But that's just not the going rate
Thanks for watching and commenting. I thought it was interesting, and not terrible for the cost. I hope to use it more soon to really see how good or bad it is. I picked up the 414 and the V6, I should compare all 3 maybe? peace
@@redcabinacoustic-official sounds good. I'm not entirely sure if BaiFeiLi actually puts together all the mics sold by the parent company though.... Hopefully because the BFL one son sound like typical cheap Chinese mics at all. Seems like they care about audio and take their cues from Western sensibilities... As far as frequency balance... Unavoid using parts through inadequate enough to negatively impact the sound.... Not saying that he's top grade components! The BaiFeiLi 414 legitimately sounds like a $400 microphone to me though. About to check out the V5. Which is part of the pro series. Microphone assassin loves them and thinks they're a pro mic, at least for voiceovers
@@redcabinacoustic-official I am going to keep using my $1,200 tube Mic A lot though... But BFL Mics are cool. And at least the proAR 414 is definitely made by BFL. Even though this one is black in the video... It's probably the V10. With Chinese stuff though you never know if someone just used a part and put subpar components and are trying to sell it as a knockoff of a knockoff! I do trust BFL to make pretty good mics though
@@redcabinacoustic-official My two favorite mics for $500 or under are the Roswell mini K67x (The one with the transformer) and the SE electronics SE4400 (not the 4400a). Those are two mics that hit well above the price point. I love the transformer sound especially on the Roswell
@@ramspencer5492 - Which tube do you use and what for? Not prying, but always trying to learn. I have some cheap tubes, my best being the RØDE NTK. Cheap mics are definitely a crap shoot. The tolerances on cheap components in cheap mics make consistency a problem. If you've watched my videos you can see I'm not really selling anything; just sharing my experience. I decided to make this, and plan to make a few others, just so folks can hear/experience a different voice on them.

The Senheiser 421 is a great mic! I worked with the award winning NPR reporter Mike Simonson in the 90's, it was his favorite mic and the favorite of others at NPR/WPR. It is also a staple for Toms in many studios. I would rank it very high in both broadcast and music production. peace

I like the RE-20. Voice recordings with it sound practically the same as live. It is clear why this is _the_ choice for broadcast. The only mic I like better reproduction-wise for spoken voice in a similar setting is the LS-208. All other choices seem to be liked because they “unhear” something that is really there, color it they way you wish it was, or to pay a huge premium for insignificant improvements.
@kenchilton - Thanks for watching and commenting. I think the RE20 is King, no offense to Shure. RUclips's love the sm7b, but I have never seen it used as the main mic in a broadcast facility. I obviously have not been everywhere, but I have been around for a minute. Cheers!
@@redcabinacoustic-official I agree. The SM7b is just okay. I think it gets used more on RUclips because it more expensive than an SM58, looks more impressive than the SM58, and fits in with the peer pressure. To me, there are three different priorities for microphones: 1. where you need to capture high quality sound as the whole purpose, 2. where you need to capture sound but the main purpose is not the sound so the mic should not be seen, or 3. where the microphone itself is at least part of the purpose. Users of the SM7b on RUclips appear to be the latter and want the microphone to speak for them.

I have owned the C3000B for nearly 20 years now. It is my go-to secret weapon for recording hand drums like djembe and doumbek. It's the first mic I ever tried to use for recording such drums, and my first impression was it was way too easy to get a fantastic sound. Thanks for watching and commenting - I hope to re-review the FetHead Filter this week with more info - I only use digital when I have too. With balanced lines I have no delay AND I don't need to involve IT. LOL Up until recently I had direct lines from city hall across town - to broadcast city council meetings and other events - Worked perfectly for over 40 years.
@@redcabinacoustic-official you can use them to run analog audio too as long as they're shielded. And they have a lot greater transmission/distance before loss because cat6 is designed to carry more bytes of data. @red cabin acoustic hey - you keep mentioning that the newer black P range is more sensitive and less noisy... is there more info on this? all i've heard and can imagine is, that they are now cheaper and china made. Would appreciate an answer as i'm really struglging to find expertise on how the black AKGs compare to the light blue AKG's also in terms of longevity THX
@rumdrunk - first of all, thanks for watching and commenting. 1. I am trusting the provided specs on the sensitivity and noise performance. I have original data sheets for these mics and came to this conclusion by comparing them. As I said in the video the noise performance is slightly better with the newer "P" mics. This could be achieved by better components or changes in circuit design, or both. 2. They are less expensive because they are made in China; labor is a huge cost in manufacturing. This does not mean that these mics are less good than their predecessors. To be clear, these have always been made and marketed as good quality, home and "project studio" microphones. AKG has many "better" mics to choose from. AKG has and still maintains that these mics are made to the same standards as their European cousins. MORE BELOW It seems that some folks confuse and/or conflate "Made in China" with garbage; not true. Up until recently much of Apple was made in China. I'm typing this on a 2012 MacBook Pro BTW. I have compared the components, performance, and PCBs of AKG mics made in Austria, Europe, and China, and can find no differences. TO BE HONEST! I share your concerns and tend to shop American and/or European when I can. There are MANY really cheap AKG Perception Series mics bought and sold on Guitar Center and other sites every day. I buy used often. I have AKG mics that date back to the 80's. Did you see my vid on the c1000s? Hope this helps - peace.

Thank you very much for this report. Very instructive. Cheers from Canada
Thanks for watching and commenting. I had questions about these mics and thought others may too - peace
I have the C1000…Seldom use it…May get it out for a re-listen…….a very well made microphone….I purchased it used, so not sure of the year……thanks
You should be able to determine the decade, probably not the year . . . If you get it out of storage check the capsule to see if one of the widgets is installed, there are also many modification videos on YT if you decide to experiment . . . Again, thanks for watching and taking the time to reply. peace
I have several P 170’s….Use them most times on my Martin…..Love the transparency, and detail of these mic’s. I used to use my AT 4040, but it is not as detailed and some low end rumble, which can be EQ’d. Very informative video, and well done…I will subscribe ….Thanks
@sanmaran1 - thanks for watching and commenting. I really don't think you can go wrong for the money. Thanks for the sub; if all goes well I'll post more vids soon.
I have 3 of the C 1000s mark IV' . i use them in a home studio setup. i think they're really good and versatile . one of them makes a thumping sound now and is unuseable. too expensive to fix. i would not buy used ones in the future and would encourage anyone to use these in a home studio. if you're only using at the home studio level they are great in my opinion.
They were really above average when they were introduced, but like many products they have been surpassed by other building on their concepts. The RØDE M3 and NT3 are good mics in the same style.
Thanks for watching and commenting, buying used is always a risk, but I know an AKG engineer, so I am not too concerned. Richard Land if you need repairs. Peace
Recently I've been assembling a simple recording setup for original songs and narration, with hope of using my trusty old EV N/DYM 257, 357 and 457 (circa 1987). The Tascam DR-10X seemed like the ticket but the levels were low when connected directly to the mic(s), even with the Tascam set for HI input (noisy). Just today I took delivery of a Fethead and an Xvive P1 Phantom Power Supply. Set the DR-10X for LO with a 2nd recovery track -12dB down and recorded a soft song (voice and classical guitar) with the mic 18" away. The main take clipped hard and the -12dB backup take peaked at -5.3dB. The wave form in Reaper looked like someone hammered it with a hard limiter to get the signal down to -5.3dB. It's a clean take - noiseless. But way hot. Wondering if a -10 or -15dB pad would calm it down, or if anyone makes a lower gain FetHead like device? All those I've seen look to be in the +28dB range. Wondering also if neodymium mics are just hotter than ferrous? Most examples I see with a Fethead are SM7B or SM57 mics. I'm also perplexed because I'm a soft-spoken baritone and never expected to blow out a recording like that.
Thanks for watching! Much to unpack here. Neodymium mics do tend to be hotter and often brighter than their non-neo counterparts. I have used those mics with mixers without issue. I don't have a DR-10X, but have used other Tascam gear, the Xvive shouldn't cause a problem. Most inline mic preamps I have used supply between 25 and 28 dB of gain. I assume you are just pulling the file from the Tascam and dropping it into Reaper, so it's crushed during the recording process. Sounds like a classic gain staging mis-match. No pun intended. The Gain/Trim Range of the Tascam is +29 dB to +45 dB, which may not attenuate enough after the gain. You could get a an inline attenuator, but conversely it may be time to get a small mixer or interface. I also assume you have tried all the gain settings on the Tascam; both with and without the FetHead? We can talk more if you wish - www.redcabinacoustic.com
@@redcabinacoustic-official I'm 68 and have several recording setups (h/w and s/w) but favor something light, portable, and easy to run for using from my EZ chair to narrate texts or make quick recordings of my tunes for copyright and my kids. The one ferrous mic I have was OK so I'll pick up an SM57. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and for your informative videos. Your AKG C1000 video has me wondering why I ever sold that mic. The MXL 603 'bonus mics' I replaced it with don't compare with the C1000.
@@ilblues - I get it, I too am in my 7th decade and as soon as I retire I will become more of a minimalist. The issue is likely the lack of headroom with the digital recorder, a common problem with simple digital recorders. Both Shure and Triton Audio make inline attenuators, the Shure A15AS is switchable. The Shure MVX2u would probably solve all your problems, (or other similar less expensive inline interfaces). Good Luck and let me know if you find a solution you like.
@@redcabinacoustic-official In hindsight with what I've spent trying to make the DR-10x work with a room mic to record tunes (acoustic guitar and voice), I should have just bought a Zoom R4. (I have an H2 and H2n but don't like them for a room application - and they're fiddly). The Tascam does work with any dynamic mic for reading devotionals to add a 'listen' option to my blog. For songs, the one ferrous mic I have, an Audix i5, sounds better than all the neodymium mics. I have ordered a -10dB attenuator to help with the tunes and will order the Shure if more attenuation is needed. What I hoped would be an experiment in simplicity, is to record songs with 1 mic situated 36" or more inches away to a mono track on the Tascam. No limiting or bass roll off applied in the Tascam. Port it to Reaper or Audacity, apply a little compression and reverb to give it a stereo feel and call it a wrap. The experiment has a lot to do with being burnt out on multitracking. About that, I've been thinking mono was good enough when we were younger, right? Those early Chet and Dylan LPs that so influenced my playing were delightful mono recordings. ;^) Best to you, Joseph! @@ilblues - Hindsight is 20/20 as they say - I miss the good old days when you pushed record and play on you tape deck and just made the noise you wanted to make. Peace - joe t - www.recabinacoustic.com
@red cabin acoustics… what is your favorite bang for your buck mic? Bonus points if it’s vintage, obscure, overlooked and therefore…cheap lol
@loganschexnayder1587 - great question, thanks for watching and asking. I'm trying to decide how to answer; I'm not ignoring you, LOL. I'll answer soon, although it may turn into a vid.
@@redcabinacoustic-official I would love that! XD
Very informative video and great sounding audio!
