  • an unreleased song about Claudine Longet. At the age of 19 Claudine met Andy Williams while in the follies and married him, although she was 14 years younger. She had three children with Williams, and in the mid sixties pursued an acting and singing career. She met Olympic skier Vladimir "Spider" Sabich while at a celebrity ski tournament in Bear Valley in 1972. By 1975 she and her children had moved into Sabich's stone and log chalet in the Starwood section of Aspen, Colorado. Things went well between the two for nearly a year until the relationship started to deteriorate and Sabich asked that she leave the premises by April 1, 1976. On March 21, 1976 Sabich was shot dead on his bathroom floor with a .22 caliber pistol. Longet was responsible for what her lawyers described as an "accident". She said that Sabich had been showing her how to use the gun when it went off. Ballistics experts at the trial testified that the safety catch was defective on the gun. He was killed by a single bullet (the only inaccuracy in the song is the reference to three shots) to the abdomen and bled to death on the way to the hospital. He was 31 years old. On January 14, 1977 she was convicted of negligent homicide and spent 30 days in the Pitkin County Jail. Claudine was granted family rights during the week which meant that she only served time on the weekends. She went on to marry her defense attorney and continues to live in Aspen.

I just discovered this song "Claudine" by The Rolling Stones, after reading about the death of Andy Williams (RIP). Evidently this song wasn't released until a decade after it was recorded. Got to love the Stones. And this is a damn good rocker too! Love it. Thx for posting this jewel.

This song is so well written. Never heard it before. Also love Mick's voice here--he says it like it is!! She did get away with murder. Even if it was an accident (very unlikely) any responsible adult should know better than to point a gun at anyone. Even when you're "being shown how to clean it" like she claimed. That's the first thing my father taught me about gun safety.

My parents used to talk about this when I was a little girl. Said that, although Andy Williams was furious, he didn't want the mother of his children to do hard time, that she wouldn't survive it, so he asked Ethel Kennedy to bring pressure to bear - don't know how. I didn't know the Stones had done a song about it.

found this looking up Claudine on wiki---was remembering the SNL skit from 1976 they did about her, showing downhill skiers that fall and adding a gunshot sound at the fall. hysterically funny. wiki says it was called the "Claudine Longet Invitational Ski Championship" I remembered it as the "Spider Sabich Ski Shoot" my memory is odd that way.

Nah. Likely Jagger was friends with Spider Sabich, her victim. Jagger was also known for dumping woman he was involved with when it was time to move on to someone younger and prettier. So he definitely had a vested interest in such exes not getting away with gunning you down for it. What if Bianca or Jerry had taken umbrage in him leaving them and pumped *him* full of lead and gotten away with it? Can't have that. ;-)

Brian Jones was murdered by his house keeper / capenter : he confessed on his death bed !
The individual whom was murdered was shown to have had a pistol in his hand : the individual whom 'killed' this person acted in self defense ( as was proven)
