  • Hope these can be enjoyed before ABKCO yanks my efforts again.
To ABKCO and/or Stones management: It's obvious I have a lot of bootlegs from the 1972 and 1973 tours. Maybe more than you? You just, you know, let me know if you want any help bringing this great unheard music to the light of day instead of, you know, having RUclips pull all this great music.

Gimme Shelter's instrumental twin guitar break is one of the greatest in rock 'n' roll history. Complimented by Keith Richards monstrous, burn your house down rhythm guitar slashes, Mick Taylor enters serious neo-psychedelic blues - third eye, mercurial - guitar territory and proves he was one of the greatest most inspired guitar players of the 60's/70's. For five short years the Stones, with Taylor proved that they truly were the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world. Remember them this way.

When I first heard this version it was off the bootleg which the stones bought the rights too ironically. Mick Taylor absolutely rips the solo. It has every trick in a lead guitar players dreams. I think it comes down to the stones love/hate with Philly. They were constantly being pelted with change and bottles. Jagger addressed it a couple times. Quote we want your money but not coins in our face lol

I was at this concert in Phila back in '72. I can't believe how tight a band they were then. I don't think they ever topped that tour. Taylor is superb on this version. Wish they had him play it on their 50th anniversary shows.

    • @Thegoodwizard

I was there too, and I agree, they were incredibly tight that night... Saw them in 81 and thought they were horrible... Said I'd never go see them again and haven't... They were so much better with Mick Taylor.....

      @NJcruiser 4 года назад +5

@@Thegoodwizard When I saw them again in '75 I just felt that something was off or missing. Looking back and listening to these youtube excerpts of the concerts I think it was losing Taylor that made a big difference to their sound at least in concert. He gave them both muscle and drive and yet had incredible feeling for softer sounds with his guitar playing. Your experience in '81 seems to have mirrored mine from '75.

Just emoting guitar playing, where virtuosity it at the service of the song. This is the difference between Taylor and most other guitar players... emotion comes first.

I am really no closer than when I’d begun. They were all glorious! This is not only my favorite Stones song but imho possibly the GOAT of rock songs. No doubt at that time, 1969-1974 the Stones really were the greatest in the world. A big part of that was Taylor’s gifts. Truly a top three guitarist in rock history. He’s never fully gotten his due as far as I am concerned.

This was as glamorous as they got, they got the mix between Rock, Rock and Roll and Glam right in the years of 72' and 73' in my NOT so humble opinion.

The best part of the whole thing, better even than Taylor's solo {in the first version..........the first version is the best} is the part at the very end commencing at 4:52 until the song ends at 5:18. It is Keith Richard at his best {playing rhythm guitar} along with Taylor. They are playing the basic "riff" of the song in unison and that is rock and roll at its very best {Jagger is also very good doing his thing as are Watts and Wyman.} Riveting.

3 immense versions of this immense hit :
1- This (these 2) Philadelphia 1972 (superlative duo : angel Mike Taylor + master Keith Richards)
2- Virginia (Norfolk) 1972 ( unfortunately betrayed by the recording quality)
3- The original album version with the dream voice of Merry Clayton and unique Keith's intro.
and many great others, especially in the 1969-1973 period (Brussels 1973, London1973...)

I got see Mick in Newark and in Boston with the Stones, was amazing. I wish he did more than a couple songs tho. My mother saw them in '69 and '72 in Boston, I have the bootlegs of the shows she went to, brilliant performances.

    I lived just outside Philly from ' 69 - ' 78 . My first Stones show was in '78 - SomeGirls ' , just before moving to Boston .

The London version has the cool intro. But my favorite is the Philadelphia 2nd show.
Relentless electricity. In awe still after listening every day for a week and a half straight.

@@jme23 Well I prefer the first show but there both killers. Classic examples of why the Stones were selling out 75,000 seat arenas in less than an hour...and NO internet!!!

This is absolutely an amazing version (1st show). The mix doesn't help, the guy must have been on Taylor's side of the stage bootlegging it! BTW, this was the last tour with the late, great Nicky Hopkins. Not taking away from Billy Preston, but they were two totally different animals. I prefer Hopkins on the acoustic piano to the electric keyboard that Preston was a master of.

The 1973 Australian tour was the last tour with Hopkins. There's a bootleg called Happy birthday Nicky/Rocks Off of the Perth show. A pretty good Gimme Shelter from that bootleg also.

I'm a Nicky's fan too. He was a fantástic musician. I adore his concerts with the stones. I like the charisma of billy preston. But that mysterious corner in darkness of Nicky is just amazing.
