A great shame because Cardiff is such a good city to go drinking in. These pubs need to up their game to pour a better Guinness. Tourists would expect nothing less than a decent pint
The Robin Hood in Pontcanna does a good stout. The owner is in there drinking them himself all the time, so the staff know how to pour + the lines are looked after but aye the standard is low everywhere else
As a Welshman this is painful to watch but unfortunately it’s an accurate reflection. I’m going to personally to take it upon myself to flog the owners of these watering holes with Leeks, until something changes.

Dempseys used to do a decent pint when I lived in Cardiff. Now living in Cheltenham and none of the pubs in Cheltenham and Gloucester give a flying Feck about how the Guinness is poured and presented. I have actually contacted Deageo, who own Guiness, and told them to sort it out! I have also stopped ordering Guinness this side of the water as it is a lost cause!
As a Kardiffian this is embarrassing to the city. Been a definite fall off since the start of the pandemic. My go to place for Guinness is The Old Market Tavern now Little O’Neills next to Cardiff Market.
You’ve gotta go out of the city centre in Cardiff. I used to live in Roath - The George, The Cryws and The Claude always did decent pints. Granted this was 10-15 years ago, but worth a shot given the slosh you were served in town!
You always remember your first proper georgous pint of Guiness, mine was on the ferry from Fishgaurd to Roslaire (not kidding).. It was like ice cream. Never had one like it (had about 6) before or since. When it dips from perfection though it isn't a great time.
Best Guinness I've had is near me in South Yorkshire, it's probably colder than it should be and sometimes the younger staff don't pour it right but it swirls for ages usually like the old adverts. Granted I've not been to Ireland yet so it's probably gonna get beat in the future. Good channel.
I live in Cardiff and it makes me sad to watch this video. My favourite place for Guinness is probably The Pen and Wig but that's just where I tend to go. Flute and Tankard is decent when I miss my bus on the way home from work, and one of the seats outside are free. I've had pints in O'Neills before but at the time wasn't thinking too much about the quality. Going to make it a bit of a goal to find the best available in the city center. Hopefully have some suggestions for next time.
I usually pop to a different O'Neill's when in the office for a pint. They have extra cold and regular taps. The regular tap feels like extra cold and the extra cold tap feels like its been cooled with liquid fecking nitrogen. Have to wrap a it a napkin to drink the bastard.
As a Cardiff man I feel ashamed that this is what the city had to offer, what a disgrace. The best pint of Guinness in Cardiff is down the bay in the packet pub, it’s an old skool pub that has a few characters to say the least and isn’t the most inviting place at certain times but the landlord has always poured me a good pint.
I wish someone from Guinness would pay attention - having spent most of my life in Cardiff I am desperate for a decent pint of Guinness there! It's rarer than Hens teeth! Keep up the good work
Cardiff now just full of chain pubs catering to stags and hens First two pubs were brains /marstons pubs .lack of investment and poor management by both for years . Brains used to have proper old school pubs with good management and brewed in the town centre The last The Vulcan closed to be knocked down and replaced by high storey student flats
@3.06, I have been drinking Guinness since I was 18, I'm now 69, back in the 70's if I saw a pint of Guinness with a head like that I'd leave it. I always used to look in a bar and see if anyone had a pint of Guinness and look to see what it looked like, to make sure the lines were clear and look at the condition of the pint! Then decide what I was going to order.
I fell in love with Guinness when i lived in belfast for a few months. It was truely something else. As i live in cardiff i really miss the proper Guinness. I may end up buying the nitrosurge cans and the lid. Just so i can have a decent pint still will be nothing like most places but its better than the shite here
This can happen anywhere, I have seen barmen and barwomen , who don't care enough to do what is necessary and then you get dirty glasses, almost one part pour , spilled over and you leave and go somewhere else! The inconsistencies are enough to stop someone ordering a Guinness!!!
I'm Irish, but I studied in Cardiff many years ago. The Guiness was terrible, so terrible is switched to Brains Black. Was nicer than the Cardiff Guinness and cheaper too, but jeez I did miss a solid pint.
Just one question: if you are at an outside venue, how do you protect the head from getting bugs in it? of course, this is if you are not drinking it as fast as recommended. I know you don't like slating a pub, but with pubs charging over £5 a pint they need calling out for not taking any pride and serving up this slop. On another note I think some better research needed, this and the b/ham vid has some proper dodgy recommendations.

Old Arcade and City Arms were both Brains pubs.
The only good Guinness I’ve come across in Cardiff is Barocco in the centre on Wharton Street, and the Royal Oak on Broadway. The Guinness everywhere else is only good for the drain

The bubbly looking sides, the lousy dark head, and the lack of shtick are all, to the best of my knowledge and practical experiment, due to the surfactant properties of the soap.
It’s sad when you consider Cardiff once had an entire Irish district/ghetto - Newtown, now a mess of building sites and horrible eyesore constructions- which gave birth to such people as the great boxer Big Jim Driscoll. I can’t think of a single Irish pub (not including o’neills obviously) anywhere in the city, which is surely unusual for a decent sized uk city. Still think if he’d gone further afield- say to roath - he might have found some decent pints. Brains do a decent stout- Brains Black - but not many places do it these days. Another welsh brewer, Felinfoel, used to do a really good one but I haven’t seen it in literally decades.
As an Englishman who’s had many travels and many pints in Cardiff, Brains and their beers are what I drink when I’m there. I’d drink it in England, but they don’t sell it anywhere!!!

Traditional pubs in Cardiff have been on a decline in quality for a while now. Not just Guinness, but say general selection etc. We’ve got some great craft bars and more cocktail bars showing up ever day. Pups seem neglected, people in Wales want a cheap pint, full to the brim with no head. Always been the case
Feel really bad about my city watching this, however there's no hiding from the truth. Cardiff bar staff are fantastic on the whole, but they're used to serving lager on a production line. Given that the city is centred around rugby and Guinness is so synonymous with that you'd think the Guinness reps would be more focused on quality. But Cardiff on a night out is chaos, so I doubt that will change! On a personal note, man should have gone to Queen's Vaults!
I’m from Ireland but unfortunately I’m living in the UK the last 5 years, I’m a Guinness drinker and I’ve tried the Guinness here so many times and I’ve never got a good pint and believe me I’ve had so many bad ones , there’s just no point ordering a Guinness over here if you are from Ireland ,you will never get a good one you will only get disappointment.Fortunately we get back home every couple of months ,nothing compares to the Guinness in Ireland .
The best Guinness I’ve had in Wales is in Cemaes Bay on Anglesey. It was alright compared to what Ireland offers. But if you go to North Lancs or the Lake District, there’s some quality pintage up there. 👍🏻
I say the small head is to keep the type of common beer drinker who feels they are not getting a proper pint under the law and think the pint is 568ml of liquid excluding the head.

Feel really bad about my city watching this, however there's no hiding from the truth. Cardiff bar staff are fantastic on the whole, but they're used to serving lager on a production line. Given that the city is centred around rugby and Guinness is so synonymous with that you'd think the Guinness reps would be more focused on quality. But Cardiff on a night out is chaos, so I doubt that will change!
On a personal note, man should have gone to Queen's Vaults!
I’m from Ireland but unfortunately I’m living in the UK the last 5 years, I’m a Guinness drinker and I’ve tried the Guinness here so many times and I’ve never got a good pint and believe me I’ve had so many bad ones , there’s just no point ordering a Guinness over here if you are from Ireland ,you will never get a good one you will only get disappointment.Fortunately we get back home every couple of months ,nothing compares to the Guinness in Ireland .
Also, that first one probably has the wrong nozzle on the tap
theyre hardly pubs their large pub bars you should have gone to the smaller pubs off the highstreet

The best Guinness I’ve had in Wales is in Cemaes Bay on Anglesey. It was alright compared to what Ireland offers.
But if you go to North Lancs or the Lake District, there’s some quality pintage up there. 👍🏻
As an Italian that drinks nothing but Frangelico, and Moretti. I adore you people from the Isle! Your Guiness is like our wine.

I say the small head is to keep the type of common beer drinker who feels they are not getting a proper pint under the law and think the pint is 568ml of liquid excluding the head.
