Krav Maga is also something that is meant to be used as a means of killing or escaping, not just fighting. Two things here- 1)This is great as long as it's a legit 1v1 fight and there are no knives or other weapons involved. Taking a guy to the ground so his friends can use your head to play kick ball is an unwise move. You get that guy on the ground and he starts stabbing and slashing with a knife from his waist band and you're screwed. The reality is that the person who comes out on top is the guy who can stay in the fight longer. Whether you have formal training or not is secondary to your ability to not quit. 2) There is a huge difference between fighting and violence. Altercations in the real world should be met with blinding violence that results in life altering consequences for your attacker. Street violence is not a school yard fight nor is it a cage match, it's mayhem and should be treated as such..

Former krav maga instructor here, real krav always uses whats most effective and pulls a lot of stuff from many other martial arts, theres no like ancient honorable rules or way to do things. It is solely for keeping you alive by incapacitating your opponent as fast as, and in any way, you can. So if an mma move is better than what’s already in krav that move will be adapted in and maybe changed a little to be more aggressive and without any consideration of rules. A lot of krav is MMA moves used in ways that would be illegal. For example we use standing arm bars that wouldn’t be effective slowly building pressure because the other person would get out of it faster and easier than a regular arm bar(which we also use), so like not great for MMA but if you just do it quickly at full strength then their arm just snaps backwards. but thats not grappling like an arm bar, it’s basically just a vicious attack with intent to maim. I get nervous jus showing that shit to people. I get the miss conception tho, there are a ton of basically fake krav gyms that are basically targeted towards the frail and elderly. Also krav gyms vary vastly in terms of their techniques cuz krav is continuously evolving as better techniques are invented. You also run into a lot of people that are borderline fucking insane so be careful who you agree to spar

In 99% of cases they won’t need hand to hand combat. If they do, they only have to hold the attacker off for long enough (usually a few seconds) until the other guys in their unit are there and shoot the other guy. And lastly there is no quality control. If the Special Force dude dies, because no backup was around and the Krav Maga he learned was shit and he died, who will report back that it was ineffective? In the 4 years of krav maga training we've never trained for this "using your keys in your fist" bullshit. We did train against knifes (from day 1), baseball bats and guns (not a prevalent thing in EU). All from various angles. Also, we DID train a lot for defending against holds and chokes, so Joe's comment is incorrect. Most of the groundfighting comes straight from BJJ, but adapted to streetfighting. What Joe also misses is the legal aspects of streetfighting being taught in class, and a lot of prevention and situational awareness, this includes 1v3 or 1v4 which is NOT trained in a competition based martial art. A lot of my training partners came from various other martial arts before coming to us, wing chun, karate, judo, bjj, boxing, kickboxing, mma. Maybe Joe only looked at some bs krav video's, not from a respectable organisation with always improving curriculum like KMG. My instructor has also trained police and military for years, and did MMA as a hobby.

Krav, to me, is a set of "immediate action drills" to deal with a violent encounter. And then training them in a way that conditions that response. So you have an initial response to a bear hug, choke, knife threat, gun, etc.
After that, you better know how to fight. The better Krav studios have cross training in BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA, etc. because they understand that after you've gotten out of the initial problem, you still have to be able to fight your way out of the situation.
All the Krav places I've trained at, have also had guys complete in amateur MMA fights.

It has nothing to do with becoming a fighter, unless yeah, you want to become one. I don't think any attacker, whether a fighter or non-fighter, picks someone who they think is better than them. Attackers usually pick someone weaker... and preemptive strike is what gives you an edge. Krav Maga isn't a martial art anyways. It's a self-defence system meant for the military,

Mostly how to get out of a situation, but if u were to fight a b.j.j guy or a grappler, they'll dominate the fight on the ground. Krav is more tactical and geared more towards combat.. against people with guns knives and clubs, how to get out of chokes when attacked how to get off the ground e.t.c the fighting stance is western style boxing so it's pretty comparable to kick boxing. Krav maga is pretty awesome. Israel has been using it since the 40s,50s so its proven to be combat effective.
