In case you haven’t noticed, there appears to be a subtitle revolution, with current research showing that as many as 61% of us are using subtitles regularly. And that number is rapidly growing! Really, no really!
Everyone hasn’t suddenly become hard of hearing, so why are subtitles suddenly becoming the norm? This global entertainment trend is transforming the way we watch television and movies…and content creators secretly admit there is a problem that necessitates subtitles! So, we had to unravel the reasons why more of us are opting for on screen text.
To help us explain the subtitle takeover, Jason and Peter enlisted the services of film researcher and producer Ed Vega, who specializes in - as his bio says - all things cinema, from the intricacies of film history to the nuts and bolts of filmmaking AND prolific dialogue editor and sound designer Austin Olivia Kendrick whose notable work includes - Star Trek Discovery, the HBO series Barry, Monster High, Rugrats, Transformers: Earthspark among many others.
    IN THIS EPISODE:
The pros and cons of using subtitles.
How today’s actor’s vocal performances differ from those in the past. Generational reasons and differences in subtitle use.
Why the 1970’s era inferior technology seemed to work better.
Do modern TVs really have speakers facing the wrong way?
Is A.I. the answer to better sound mixing?
Wait…competing streaming services have no audio standards!
What about the George Lucas created THX?
Which do we prefer in foreign language movies-Dubbed or subtitled?
Have subtitles and audio descriptions made entertainment more accessible?
How Jason accidentally watched the original Squid Game.

My theory is these editor/sound editors are using headphones in a tiny room and make the sound too artsy. I live in the real world, I have neighbors and garbage trucks outside, and I cant deal with everything being whispered and mumbled

Some times shows are mumbled, especially British shows. Seriously.

Cleese certainly does on Fawlty Towers and those are often the funniest lines of the show

I use subtitles at home all the time. For me there's several different reasons why. I live in NYC right near a very busy highway, so there's often background noise coming from outside. My living room doesn't have any kind of sound treatment to absorb sound so it sounds very "lively" in my listening environment. If you clap loudly, it reverbates sharply. Also the sound system I have for my TV is a mid level soundbar system with a separate subwoofer for bass. Not a bad system, but not a high end sound system. I think all those things combined almost force me to use subtitles. Also, the audio mixes for different shows and movies are all over the place. There's no standard. I've sort of trained myself not to start reading the subtitles unless I feel I'm missing stuff. I try to keep my eyes on the action unless I need some help. I LOVE going to a movie theater where the sound is great and subtitles aren't needed!!!

I never had this volume problem as a child. Don't movie companies know it happens? I find myself constantly adjusting the volume in many movies and that distreacts from enjoying the movie.

I highly agree with Jason, my wife, and daughter like to watch movies with the subtitles on, and I hate it! I'd rather, like Jason, pay attention to the the actor speaking, and the scene rather than also reading the subtitles which draws my attention away from the acting. It's extremely irritating to me as I find it very difficult if not impossible to not read the subtitles hence the movie is a less enjoyable experience! 👍😎✌🗽

Me to but sometimes there's no real option if it's mumbled dialog.

@@markhartshorn Oh yeah, if the entire movie, or whatever is to difficult to discern what the players are saying it also becomes unenjoyable. Luckily in most movies that's not the case.

I find subtitles handy, especially if they spell the odd words correctly, but when I watch a TV show like Late Night with Stephen Colbert or Jimmy Kimmel Live on RUclips, as I don't stay up late to watch it on TV, I have to think that they are using AI to add in the subtitles, because they are continuously full of errors. I also, one time, watch an anime movie with my daughter with the subtitles on and the subtitles were telling a bit of a different story then what the dubbed English was saying.

Subtitles: I am watching a movie in English and some characters come on speaking another language and they do not automtically put subtitles. They even did it with a person doing sign language. I click on subtitiles now the characters spaking english are also subtitled. This takes way from the enjoyment of the movie and is completely unnecessary.

I find subtitles are required because the soundtrack is often mixed in as loud or louder than the dialogue. Ridiculous.

Why do movies on streaming services volume go way up when there is music or action or going into a nightclub? I understand background noise. But shouldn't it be just that background noise or atmosphere? Why do I find myself enjoying a movie and then I get balsted with sound and then I turn the volume down and then they speak and now I cannot hear them.

As someone who learned English from watching TV (including Seinfeld), I think translation subtitles are important. Other than that, I hate same language subtitles. People need to just increase the audio, pay attention and listen.

Subtitles are redundant and distracting. Other than for translations or sound difficulties, they're nothing but a nuisance.
