Two rumors were said that she had a crush on Mickey everyone knew but him or he may have known but either didn't tell her he liked her as a sister or he told her he didn't feel that way about her. He was more interested in women like Lana Turner or Ava Gardner who he eventually married. Second rumor was that she wasn't interested in him at all in a documentary about Mickey a friend said Mickey remarked he should've married Judy he would've been better off.

I truly wish that Judy had been signed a little older. MGM signed her at a critical age when most kids go through awkward stages. I am sure MGM knew exactly what they had with Judy. They knew she had so much more to offer than just a pretty face, and I think they broke her down this way because being so young and easy to intimidate and influence they abused her in this way, and Judy herself probably was also somewhat self conscious about her looks surrounded by established stars, dancers, and models on the MGM lot on a regular basis, making it even easier for the studio executives to compare her to others and to bully her. She was a child with a lot of growing up to do both physically and mentally when they contracted her. She still had her baby fat that most burn off in their later teens which she did. They were greedy and didn't want to pay her what she rightfully deserved for all her talents. She was the girl next door and she was soft, so it was easy for them to hammer and chisel away at her and keep her from realizing her value and self worth. Also after the death of her father she didn't really have anyone who truly loved, cared for, encouraged her, and who could or would stand up for her. Mickey certainly loved her, but he was also under contract and part of the studio machine. If I am wrong it wouldn't make sense that the studio was furious at the thought of one of their stars singing in a barnyard setting, saying it was demeaning, and demanding that it be removed from the film on several occasions. Without which we would not have her most iconic moment in 'The Wizard of Oz' and her singing of 'Over The Rainbow'. Thank heavens for Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, and for George Cukor for the changes he made in her appearance, making her look more natural instead of with a blonde wig and babydoll makeup, and also for telling Judy to just be herself. To me these three men are the true creators of this masterpiece of classic film that will live forever because of theirs, Judy's, and the rest of the amazing actors and actresses talented, and devoted to the telling of this story, performances.

According to Ava Gardner, who married him when she just got to Hollywood, he was the greatest womanizer ever. He jumped on everything that moved. You couln't leave your labrador in front of him for to long. And he lived about twice as long as Judy did. In the end he had to go to those sad events where old Hollywood greats sell their photographs with an autograph, and for a picture with them you have to pay, well, at least 20 dollars. He himself said of this: "I didn t expect to live this long. The money is running out." One issue that is so ironic about these stories is that since Mickey and Judy were such important assets to MGM that their salaries did not reflect it. They certainly deserved a percentage of the earnings of the films, as some stars did to compensate for lower salaries. Also they certainly deserved greater treatment than they received. If they had had Managers and the strength of SAG behind them, things might have been different.

I saw the movies they made well after they were made but I loved them all. I hope they found a place in heaven where they could be together. They both deserved so much more than they got out of Hollywood.

damianop100 he wasn't good looking and he was short, but yes gosh was he expressive! Expressiveness is very important in performance. More than good looks. In those days expression was very important. When you compare it to these days where everyone is now beautiful and handsome but so many have as much personality as wet concrete. Performers these days by comparison are so boring, overly sexualised and tiresome to watch . Even Beyoncé to me is extremely tiresome. So ridiculously overly sexual and over the top. Modern day performers are excessive and so egoic it's absurd.

Such a young girl and singing those standards songs by the best song writers in the world required genuine talent, Those songs had melody lines that were complex to play and sing. I suppose most of the people in America today consider this music out of Vogue and fashion but these songs are timeless. I wonder if there are any female or male singers around today who could do justice to any of this material. maybe, but I would have to say no.

I think Mickey maybe kept his "grand, acting" persona more in interviews, but he was a great storyteller. And he certainly did not deserve the elder abuse he suffered later in life. My only hope is that they've both found rest now.

It’s very unfortunate that Judy was so over worked and kept going on medications she was brilliant, beyond talented and I wish she could have had many more years to share her brilliance such a beautiful star gone way too early. I love her and am thankful that her movies and television shows can be seen. Some of the comments I've read make it seem as though Mickey were "hiding" or "covering up" what went on at MGM with Judy. These "intros" were not a documentary or tell-all. They were preludes to their particular movies. The focus was on the good times he had with Judy. That doesn't mean Mickey was covering anything up. It means the focus was about the movies and the good memories.

A relative of mine was one of the producers of Wizard of Oz and he told me that Judy just blew them all away. He said everyone responsible for casting thought she was too fat and not good looking enough, but she could sing so well and was a pretty good actress at the time, so they started her on diet pills and cast her.
Turned out pretty good for MGM, but not right away. It didn't do well at the box office, but when it got to television, it took off. Yip Harborg wrote the lyrics to Over the rainbow which was not in the original film, but was added for the general release and immediately became a very important part of the film. Yip did Brigadoon, too and later was part of the anti communist witch hunt by HUAC. He lost his livelihood as did many other black balled artists. (Let's not do that again folks).

Be happy because we got to enjoy their greatness. Life is overflowing with sadness and tragedy, but only very rarely is there anyone as magnificent as either of these. They represented everything that is good about life. So be happy for them. They is plenty of horror and misery to be sad about, especially in 2019. But be happy for Mickey and Judy; that is what they wanted: to make us happy. Listen to what Mickey says here.

Don’t act like she had a perfect life...just cuz she was famous doesn’t make her life cool....actually it’s the opposite.....her mom sold her out.....that woman had zero resources and died alone. An amazing talent, used up until they tossed her aside, Mickey Rooney toed the party line. Btw, he was a misogynistic pos from the get go, but, hey that was the way it was back then. The point is, don’t accept the boys will be boys crap, and hold people to a higher standard, and Rooney sugarcoated thetrain wreck that was Judy Garland . Me too# started way too late.
