I *WANT* to love shujinko, but ultimately he's just too weak. He should start fully charged, his side kameo attacks should better help extend combos, and this special kameos should be the cherry on top, not the core of the cake. There's too many variables based on who you opponent is for his special kameo's to be relied on, but if they were just 'extras' on an already solid (not top tier, but solidly usable) fundamental kameo, then a lot of people would pick him up.
To be fair, I went through the roster in order of where they appear in the select screen, so the baraka havik and geras section was a bit of a coincidence. It was a hard choice of whether or not to list tried and true starting points, or have different kameos for the sake of it. But the latter would have been less backed up by what we actually see and more my own opinion.
5:26 It took me a while to accept that Reiko is not what he used to be, but as I started messing around with kameos, I realized that he's still fun to play as because he works well with the meta, you can use a variety of different kameos with him, Darrius being an obviously fun one, but I also like pairing Reiko with Stryker, Sektor, Goro or Sareena as well, also Motaro worked well for me when trying to counter a Shang Tsung personally.

I highly recommend stryker for shang tsung for similar reasons to pick shang, but you actually get use for all of strykers assists. Gives shang a good high option to suppliment all his lows, the restand spaces you out really well for his f3 or even a cheeky morph. His grenades also provide a great addition to your zoning AND an incredible oki option that is plus, blows up armor, and briefly hides your actions behind the grenade explosions. It's a fantastic match imo and stryker works with enough of the cast to justify morphing more frequently without having to use a kameo like sub/sareena/cyrax.
Will say, Scorpion for Mileena is best if your play style is seeking to just enhance her strengths. If you want to cover her weaknesses, Kung Lao and Cyrax are great choices for her.
if you play nitara, try kung lao. his hat makes her 1212 launching string +2 on block if you block-confirm, and she gets really good hard-to-block setups with low hat. not to mention that low hat can single-handedly out-zone the majority of the cast, he compliments her moveset perfectly.
I've been considering this a lot lately actually. I've been playing her with Stryker, mainly because Stryker hugely buffs her lackluster strings, and his grenades cover so much area, are mid, and are easy to visually combo off since her bite is so fast, but I think Lao might give her the same main bonuses with more potential. Low hat really is that cheap lol 😅
Yes! The Sareena+Nitara combo feels a little redundant to me since she already has excellent combo damage completely on her own. I think the best kameos for her are ones that help with mixups and opening the opponent up
Havik and Cyrax is where i started as well, but I also encourage using Stryker. The grenades and the ability to restand with the cuffs is so nice for extending the odd range that havik provides
Sindel is so interesting to me because imo more than any other character, she both benefits from and depends on a Kameo to define her playstyle. Like, if you mainly want to use her as a projectile zoner, or have the neutral, or use her mixups and plus frames, in my experience your choice of Kameo will pretty much make all the difference in terms of whether it’s viable, which is why it’s so interesting to me that she has the Kameo buffs/debuffs. (Very appropriate gameplay design for a monarch btw)
I’m really loving Sindel in this game. She suit a lot of different play style and depending on how you play you can pick a cameo that fit that style. I’ve been enjoying using pairing her with Frost interesting enough.
Very informative and useful. I’m a filthy character loyalist so it’s Sub Zero and Sektor for my main. Definitely going to refer to this vid when I look to branch out in characters.
For Reiko, I usually use Frost. Her low freeze, especially on more eager opponents can be great for setting up his launch to air combos. That or her combo dagger attack after you land his F12 string.
I know you said this is just a beginners guide but I think it’s worth mentioning that Scorpion also works well with Tanya. Combo extender on moves that don’t combo, overhead and armoured full screen escape for when she needs to go back to zoning. Not tried Goro myself but I will give it a try
Nice to see some beginner Kameo recommendations for characters. My main issue is not only learning the timing of when to call in the Kameo during a combo, but its doing combos in general that I have to get used to. I've been playing alot of Skullgirls recently so jumping into MK after getting used to the more faster paced fighting of Skullgirls is tough for me but im slowly getting the hang of it. Currently learning Kenshi and Havik so knowing who's the best Kameo to start out with them is greatly appreciated!
If you are new (like me), i highly recommend you to play like MK9, relying on your meter and don't use kameos, once you learn ur character and the mix ups, you can now begin to test out ur kameos, it will be so hard to get used to it (my brain has seizures every time i train) but once you find the kameo you actually match with, babe the world is ur limit GO CRAZY
General Shao’s best kameo is Motaro hands down. He gives him true 50/50’s that lead to fat damage, gives him antizoning, fast projectiles 50/50’s of his mid and an armored teleport.
I've had good results with Smoke + Sonya. It's similar to Li Mei + Scorpion where it gives you a lot more reward for getting hits in. Her neutral lets you combo off low teleport, and he leg grab launches off any combo (technically smoke can do that himself using the smoke dash cancel trick, but it's a very precise technique you'll need a lot of practice to do consistently)
So basically, in the eyes of the community, Motaro, Shujinko, Sonya, Kano, and Frost are useless kameos. Although I personally use Sonya, Darius, Frost, and Motaro, I've basically been playing the meta wrong. I think Liu goes great with Sonya, Shao and Motaro is great, Kano and Frost goes with many characters, and Shujinko is great with Sub and Geras, specifically in the MU against Sub or Geras which is sad. I was looking forward to learning Shang Tsung with Shujinko to steal from the opponents tools, but now I feel it's not really worth it.
Stryker with geras is really good because he gives you mixups and makes unsafe strings safe on block allowing for more pressure and he has a rest with the handcuffs making it a 50/50 scenario.
Reptile actually has a lot of awesome Kameo options. You got Sektor for Zoning, pace control, Invisibility setups and some combo options (that's the one I picked), you got Scorpion for Invis setups, mixups, combos and damage output, you got Frost also for Zoning, pace control and Invis setups, you got Motaro for combos and counter-Zoning, and you got Darrius for combos and mixups. I think Kung Lao might be a great option too now that I think about it, thanks to Low Hat. Reptile is such a versatile character, that there's no one definitive option for him.
Great list but I would add Motaro as a good kameo for Reptile. Even though he lowers health but the teleport turns acid spit into a full combo. You can also do an enhanced slow force ball from a distance and teleport behind the opponent and maintain pressure as the force ball is closing in from behind. Not the best pairing but adds combo potential and some pressure tools.
Im by no means professional or even a high skill level player, but I've been doing a lot of practice with Jax and Nitara. The health you get is very nice and there seems to be a lot you can do with Jax's assists.
@rocket_bsd_8101 yeah I actually tried Sector myself and having his missile is so nice against like sub zero. I'd say either of ours work or could be better for certain matchups
I just got the game yesterday and have mainly played Nitara/Sareena just because the vampire demon aesthetics are very on Brand for me. Guess it's cool I picked the best kameo for her based on my dumb tastes lmao
I'm not good at this game or fighting games in general but I love kenshi frost as a kenshi main - the ability to mixup with the frost low freeze while attacking mid can turn a blocked move into a sento stance conversion.
As a havik player...the only thing i disagree on is i feel like subzero is a much more fitting cameo for beginners and cyrax for advanced...i found it really easy to pick up sub and utilize ALL of his assists as opposed to cyrax...im currently in the process of implementing cyrax and im strugglin a little with the timing of copter in the middle of some strings whether its on hit or on block
Before I saw this video, I thought “Hey Kenshi/Sektor isn’t exactly the best combination, maybe I should try Sub Zero.” Glad that I actually have some basis for that. Definitely gonna try it.
Now that I've gotten more used to the timings, Sektor rocket giving Smoke knockdown pressure after a combo feels too awesome. It gives them something to have to consider while you're staggering F3 and canceling in their face
A MAASIVE thank you to PNDK&M for trying their best to not put cyrax as the go to cameo for like 50% of the roster and trying to keep the Kombat league clean from cyrax abusers ! Love you man and keep up the videos
I main Nitara and would say Kung Lao is her best kameo, as it gives her good mix off her F1 and she can do a full combo off her armored reversal punish with the teleport. She can also get decent damage on her own with meter, so Sareena isnt really needed. As of now though Nitara is definitely in a rough spot and i hope future kameos give her better synergy.
Yeah this 100%, Jax is also a viable pick because of the health buff and setplay potential with ground pound. Lao is just the best pick because you get a projectile, plus frames, a good meterless reversal (spin) or you get to combo from your armored move as you mentioned
@@sammythijs8641I never considered Jax but you’re so right, she can get huge damage from air punishes so anything that forces the opponent to jump can be super helpful
@@rafaeljoseph3951 she can get armor breaking resets and she doesn’t even need the corner to pull that off. All you need is one combo ending with divekick and then the opponent has to guess between normal wake up timing and delay wake up timing. As long as you have one bar to spend you can keep looping it💀
Not really a beginner, but I've been having some success with Scorpion + Motaro, but I feel like Motaro kameo is a high risk, high reward option for a bit of the roster. Might try Ashrah + Sareena so I can get better at Ashrah in general.
The health adjustment aspect of the cameos makes for an easy way to normalize and buff them. Take the big four and make them all penalize your health to whatever degree is necessary. Take the weaker cameos and have them grand health buffs of different magnitudes. I bet you could roll out a patch just tinkering with that element of the cameos in a single day.
For me at least, the pairs i use Havik : sub zero Baraka : cyrax (very original yes) Geras : sareena Reiko : darrius or sonya Rain : sub zero Syzoth : scorpion Raiden : jax
I must say that today is my first time playing the game and its HARDDDD!! The kameo mechanic takes quite a bit of getting used to. The intricate timings make it even harder. Idk how yall play at such high level so fast. It’s insane
I picked up the mix up machine (Smoke) at the game first and paired him for a long time with the Scorpion kameo. Same reason as to why he was paired with Kung Lao here, but in the different direction. To add another mix up opportunity, but instead of a low an overhead with Scorpion that's easy to combo into from the forward summon.
I fought a really good Nitara using Goro. Gave her a decent 50/50 off her double hitting sweep. She could also call out his raise the roof on unsafe strings, like her 1212 launching string, to make them plus.
Personally I find with Ashrah, Sonya is a great paring as it gives access to projectiles, but mainly as it gives you combo opportunities off of your meterless DF3. Hitting them midair with Sonya gives you so much combo potential from a meterless launcher, it has given me so much damage for little commitment.
Pretty basic pick but i been using Sonya with smoke i know she not very popular but her air dash move pairs so well with his forward 4 (the air kicks) where you could never get it from most launchers meterless and her projectile has saved me more then once in those end match scenarios where you both have fatal blows and both of you are stalling lol having a projectile option is very helpful
Darius is a great Kameo for Havik for the same reason that he is a great Kameo for Reiko, getting more damage off that throw mix-up he uses with his back 2 2 string.
I’ve seen a few players recommend Goro Kameo for Reptile. He allows for relatively easy combo extensions, like after Reptiles 114 (I think it’s 4?) Reptile is kind of in a tricky spot in this game, there was way more hype for him before the game dropped, but seeing him online is a rarity to me…He might be a sleeper character! For Kenshi, I think Sektor could also be a decent Kameo. I’ve not really used Sento stance too much, but with Kenshi being a good zoner in his own right, Sektor compliments this. Also Kenshi’s back throw followed by a properly timed Missile assist was a nice little setup I used online. Hey do you guys think we’ll get Human Sektor and Cyrax if they ever show up?
I believe Reptile's best kameo is Scorpion, he not only keeps Reptile safe with his back kameo, he can also offer him combo potential and mix up options, with Reptile's back 313, you can instead do back 31 forward kameo into acid ball, and you can extend combos with Scorpion
I would use ashra and goro. Goro allows ashra to combo off her grab, he makes her overhead plus and her launcher plus, he allows her to combo off almost every string she has, and she has some setups with his stomp
Seems like Sub-Zero, Scorpion and the Cyborgs do well entry level Kameos then. I also saw some Sub-Zero/Frost a fair bit. Hopefully Bi-Han will get bumped up a little bit.
@PNDK&M thanks for this, I decided to pick up and learn the game with Sub-Zero since, I’ve been really interested in the character but, his overall low damage output has been something that scared me off from the character, but I have heard that has been buffed somewhat and now he has the 2nd best damage for no meter right behind Omni-Man of course so, yeah I will definitely be learning him and what better time to start learning the character than during the winter time here in the states? I don’t see much of a better thematic time to start learning the character personally so, I might as well start now
Hello Ketchup. Great video. I agree with most (I personally think Frost is a better pick for Kenshi, but I use Frost as my Kameo with Reiko so I may have some bias) Can you do a followup video on this from the Kameo perspective. Kind of like "say you want to play Sonya. Which Character utilizes Sonya the best." Or allows her to shine. I think that would be cool. I know some combos will be the same as this video. Darrius/Reiko for example. But I would find this perspective interesting. Might be great for those people who have a favorite character in the series who is Kameo only in this game.
I use Goro for scorpion simply because you can combo from almost full screen off of Scorpions back 3 and it makes it so he actually has a low combo starter. Then his omelette toss is nice for starting air combos. And for Shao I use kung lao. Shaos back 1 is fast and can go into an overhead. Add lao low hat and you have a mix up off of a safe move. If you have fast enough reflexes you can combo into spin from his back 1. Lao gives shao an overhead low mix up options with insane recharge speed and gives a launcher on reads and hit comfirms. Can't find a kameo that helps with Shao's gameplay as much as lao. The teleport could be faster though.
For any smoke players and I know there’s a ton of you he’s probably the most popular non super top tier. Anyways the best Kameo for him is scorpion by far it turns everything into a launcher and basically turns smoke into mister meterless damage bc kameo meter comes back freely.
Any Liu Kang player should try goro. He lets you do full screen dragon kicks for free while also giving some good block pressure that’s better than King Lao’s kameo. The only downsides to goro is how long it takes to recharge and the -50 health.
I have a question about capture assists: How long does the state last for the three characters that have them (it's just Sub, Frost, and Cyrax, right?)? I feel like I really want to run a character with them (throwbacks to when he was a clone of Scorp/Sub) but I'm curious if i get enough time to set the invisibility up and continue the combo with all of them or if there's some I should avoid.
I use frost with Sub Zero because for her ground freeze lets me pull off a combo since a lot of Sub Zeros moves are unsafe which I hope he gets buffed soon
Interesting you say Sub-Zero is the best Kameo for Reptile but I see why when you consider Reptile's invisibility, guess I'll just have to play the game, can't wait to experiment! :)
Ive been using Stryker Kameo with Rain and its very good in many ways, 43% midscreen 1BAR but rain doesn't have good range and his F2 has to much pushback for me to connect Stryker grenades + Water Beam Cancel into another F21 for high damage. He only has D3 (-13 on block), B4 (-7 but knocks them down) and then F2 13f mid but it only has half the range of most D4's. His F3 is very slow at 28 frames and can't be thrown out all the time. 211 has double highs at start that are stubby. Stryker does great in many areas but its mainly rains buttons that im struggling with. What Kameo do you think is best for Rain in competitive play that gives block pressure and extends combos off his best strings?
Hey, on the off chance you see this (or anyone who can help), could you clarify that Rain/Sub-Zero combo where you freeze the opponent after the aerial? I've been trying to do it for ages but it seems like by the time I can bring out Sub-Zero the opponent is already hitting the ground, and the freeze misses. Do you know what I might be doing wrong?

Great work 👍 and an amazingly helpful video. The best MK1 content on RUclips
That's a great option too, and it is actually one of the best pairings for Reptile
Im by no means professional or even a high skill level player, but I've been doing a lot of practice with Jax and Nitara. The health you get is very nice and there seems to be a lot you can do with Jax's assists.
Unblockable resets being one of those things
Saw deoxys post some jax nitara stuff last night. Also great that he gives her a huge bulk of health too.
For Nitara I would use kung lao since you get so many crazy mixups with his low hat+air dash
I use sektor and it works pretty well. I got cussed out like 3 times last night
@rocket_bsd_8101 yeah I actually tried Sector myself and having his missile is so nice against like sub zero. I'd say either of ours work or could be better for certain matchups
I was so excited to see Sareena recommended for Sub-Zero. Mortal Kombat Mythologies lives on!
Loving this
I just got the game yesterday and have mainly played Nitara/Sareena just because the vampire demon aesthetics are very on Brand for me.
Bruh, Bi-Han and Sareena is just perfect perfection.
I use cyrax his spin move compliments a lot of her strings
@@sammythijs8641I never considered Jax but you’re so right, she can get huge damage from air punishes so anything that forces the opponent to jump can be super helpful
@@SoufSideGuapo yeah Cyrax just compliments everyone haha😄
@@rafaeljoseph3951 she can get armor breaking resets and she doesn’t even need the corner to pull that off.
All you need is one combo ending with divekick and then the opponent has to guess between normal wake up timing and delay wake up timing. As long as you have one bar to spend you can keep looping it💀
Not really a beginner, but I've been having some success with Scorpion + Motaro, but I feel like Motaro kameo is a high risk, high reward option for a bit of the roster. Might try Ashrah + Sareena so I can get better at Ashrah in general.
Kung Lao and Liu Kang together is so perfect
The health adjustment aspect of the cameos makes for an easy way to normalize and buff them. Take the big four and make them all penalize your health to whatever degree is necessary. Take the weaker cameos and have them grand health buffs of different magnitudes. I bet you could roll out a patch just tinkering with that element of the cameos in a single day.
Thank you! I hate being punished for using Goro with Reptile lol. Reptile's damage is already weak enough
For me at least, the pairs i use
Havik : sub zero
Baraka : cyrax (very original yes)
Geras : sareena
Reiko : darrius or sonya
Rain : sub zero
Syzoth : scorpion
Raiden : jax
Shang and Lao/ Shang shujinko my favorite pair, was rocking reptile/sareena, kenshi/cyrax,
8:21, they’re back together again.
I must say that today is my first time playing the game and its HARDDDD!! The kameo mechanic takes quite a bit of getting used to. The intricate timings make it even harder. Idk how yall play at such high level so fast. It’s insane
Can you please do combo guides !
Good tips
I picked up the mix up machine (Smoke) at the game first and paired him for a long time with the Scorpion kameo. Same reason as to why he was paired with Kung Lao here, but in the different direction. To add another mix up opportunity, but instead of a low an overhead with Scorpion that's easy to combo into from the forward summon.
I fought a really good Nitara using Goro. Gave her a decent 50/50 off her double hitting sweep. She could also call out his raise the roof on unsafe strings, like her 1212 launching string, to make them plus.
*What's the best one for Prince Rain ?*
👑💜👑💜
Personally I find with Ashrah, Sonya is a great paring as it gives access to projectiles, but mainly as it gives you combo opportunities off of your meterless DF3. Hitting them midair with Sonya gives you so much combo potential from a meterless launcher, it has given me so much damage for little commitment.
I’d like to say that I’ve been using Sonya with Sub Zero and her air punch helps with combo extenders with back 2.
Havik with goro and scorpion has been bananas for me
All you gonna see online is Serena and Cyrax. Hopefully some balance changes come next season.
Shoutout Ketchup. Shoutout Mustard. Shoutout The Tekunin
Shujinko left the chat.
I cant wait to see Movado, tremer and the others
I would use ashra and goro. Goro allows ashra to combo off her grab, he makes her overhead plus and her launcher plus, he allows her to combo off almost every string she has, and she has some setups with his stomp
Seems like Sub-Zero, Scorpion and the Cyborgs do well entry level Kameos then. I also saw some Sub-Zero/Frost a fair bit. Hopefully Bi-Han will get bumped up a little bit.
I just picked Cyrax with Baraka because his character is cool and the mk3 cyber ninjas are awesome. Also has by far the best kameo fatality
I don’t see much of a better thematic time to start learning the character personally so, I might as well start now
Funny how so many characters best ally with their rivals, arch enemies or best friends. Something to be said about lore-teams.
Hello Ketchup. Great video. I agree with most (I personally think Frost is a better pick for Kenshi, but I use Frost as my Kameo with Reiko so I may have some bias)
Can you do a followup video on this from the Kameo perspective.
I prefer sub for havik he's a bit easier to use sub also makes it easier to hit his weird projectile the homing one
For smoke I love sektor for the safety on strings and it scares a lot of player with the teleport cancel
For any smoke players and I know there’s a ton of you he’s probably the most popular non super top tier. Anyways the best Kameo for him is scorpion by far it turns everything into a launcher and basically turns smoke into mister meterless damage bc kameo meter comes back freely.
i heard Shao also works well with Motaro, nasty teleport combos
Nitara with Sonya is AWESOME¡¡¡ 35-50% Combos
Any Liu Kang player should try goro. He lets you do full screen dragon kicks for free while also giving some good block pressure that’s better than King Lao’s kameo. The only downsides to goro is how long it takes to recharge and the -50 health.
Personally, I like using General StephanShao with Motaro
For subzero an honorable mention goes to goro keeps you safe on your over head and let’s you combo off your slow string
I have a question about capture assists:
How long does the state last for the three characters that have them (it's just Sub, Frost, and Cyrax, right?)? I feel like I really want to run a character with them (throwbacks to when he was a clone of Scorp/Sub) but I'm curious if i get enough time to set the invisibility up and continue the combo with all of them or if there's some I should avoid.
Sareena with Ashrah is fitting for story reasons too.
Great video
Stryker 👀
Reiko is so freaking fun lol Darrius is a really nice partner for him
I use lao/lao, sub/sareena, and shang/cyrax. hopefully i get to know the better ways of using them
Hey, on the off chance you see this (or anyone who can help), could you clarify that Rain/Sub-Zero combo where you freeze the opponent after the aerial? I've been trying to do it for ages but it seems like by the time I can bring out Sub-Zero the opponent is already hitting the ground, and the freeze misses. Do you know what I might be doing wrong?
Johnny and Sonya is nasty for air combos imo
Thanks again
