- When Emily Rodda's Deltora Quest series of fantasy books launched in 2000, they quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, selling more than 18 million copies - and it was easy to see why.
You're not meant to judge a book by its cover, but the Deltora Quest covers looked nothing like the other children's books on the shelves at the time - and to a ten-year-old, different was definitely good!
I spoke with the artist behind those books, Marc McBride, to learn how he entered the world of Deltora.

Love this channel and the exposure it’s giving to the unknown artists of popular works. You should interview the guy who painted the Grand Theft Auto and other Rockstar Games artworks.
Thank you so much, and a great suggestion!
I'm so glad RUclips suggested your videos. Goosebumps, Oddbodz, and Deltora Quest shaped my early art sensibility (I was around 6-8 years old). I'm 31 now and in grad school, creating art that's still very much influenced by those artists, so I can't appreciate you enough for producing these videos !
Glad you made it here!
He did those three covers IN ONE WEEK FUCKING WHAT!?
The illustrations for these novels informed and basically dictated my view of fantasy from childhood to now. I still love every illustration and book: pure magic.
Another face behind memorable childhood book cover art amazing!
Stay tuned. More coming soon!
I never read the series myself but my sister did and I loved looking at the art on it so much. They were just so colorful and a lot more interesting than other books from this time. Thank you for covering this fantastic artist!
Thanks for watching!
Just wanted to say thanks for the fantastic interview, this video unlocked deep memories of reading this series as a kid!
Awesome! I’m glad you found it!
These videos are great. I'd love to see a Brett Helquist Episode.
I just discovered your channel literally 5 minutes ago and I love your videos! I subscribed and I hope your channel blows up, and I can't wait to see what you make next!
Thank you so much for your kind words and support!
Thank you for covering all these iconic yet kinda culty videos on book illustrators. I was really interested in animals and mythical creatures when I was a kid and I remembered loving the covers of Deltora Quest so much I'd go to library to take another look at it. I ended up going to art school XD
Thanks for watching! Glad you're enjoying the videos!
This video series is amazing. Quality interview and so well produced.
Thank you! Very kind.
Loving this channel, super cool to interview these artists.
Don’t know where it’d place on your content priority list, but I always liked the covers to the Eragon series, with the four different dragons.
I think what would be super cool is maybe get some of the trading card game artists on, like some from Magic the Gathering that have been, or were doing cards for yearrrrs. Also Garbage Pale Kids would be a good subject too (in my opinion).
Thanks! All great suggestions and in vibe with the channel!
amazing channel! i've been waiting for something like this! i love 90s nostalgia channels but I think this is the first one focusing on the art of the decade and I'm here for it! I'm an illustrator and this is such good inspiration as well
Thanks! I’m glad the algorithm brought you here!
please bring in the guy who does game informer magazine covers. The illustrations are absolutely mesmerizing.
Deltora Quest was also adapted into a manga.
I just subscribed instantly. I loved Deltora! I had the Secrets of Deltora world guide as a kid and thought that Deltora was a legitimate place lol. Sadly it isn’t but I am still very fond of the amazing art in that book. Only recently did I find out that it was a book series and anime. But I appreciate your videos. These bring back so many memories!
Thanks! I’m glad you got to take the trip down memory lane!
I'm so happy I stumbled across your channel!! Such inspiring interviews, happily subscribed ☺️
I’m glad you made it here!
May I recommend a topic; a story behind the artwork in Iron Maiden's albums seems like it would fit this channel
Love the idea!
Great stuff
Thanks!
I love your channel!!!
Thanks!
