I loved loved LOVED these books as a kid. Have to say though, as an adult artist I get a headache just thinking about the logistics of making those drawings. I don't think I could ever do anything like that.
This was a blast! I had that same cross-section aircraft when I was a kid, and I carried that around all over the place. When I was 9 or 10 my mum got me the Episode One book for Christmas, and I just remember being so fascinated with it all, and all the inner workings, what they did, and how they worked. Same thing with Episodes 2 and 3. This was just so much fun to watch :)
I loved these books so much growing up, they captured my imagination as much as the films and are responsible for much of the work I do today. Thank you for shedding light on the men who made them.
I’m so glad I found this channel! I remember my dad buying me a Star Wars cross-section book when I was a kid. I would spend hours just looking at the book and being incredibly impressed with the logistics.
I’ve stumbled across your series and am so glad I did. The cross-sections books were a massive influence on me in my youth and definitely played a role in me being an illustrator. The interview with Hans really took me back to being a kid on Christmas and getting the book. I’m already on Amazon buying the complete set now 😂
Fabulous artist. Great to hear his backstory and behind-the-scenes info about the making of the books you wouldn't hear anywhere else. It's a little disappointing there isn't a cross-section book accompanying Rise of Skywalker, but I've heard there wasn't enough new ships or locations to warrant a full book for it, so they added six or seven new drawings to a new 2020 edition of Star Wars Complete Vehicles that covers ROS.
Stinky Cheese Man and now Incredible Cross Sections too?!?! My new favorite channel! I loved this book so much back in the day. They had a bunch of the series at the school library and they were some of my favorites to look through whenever I could. But they didn't have star wars, and my parents said they couldn't afford it because it was a little pricey for a book. A friend of mine had it though, and I used to go over to his house all the time just to hang out and look at this book for hours. There were a few others that were about star wars mechanics/engineering and whatnot, but I can't recall what they were called. He had those too, and they were definitely part of the rotation. What a throwback! Edit: Well I found that pretty quick. The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels was the other book. Pretty sure there was one or two more but that one and cross sections were the main ones.
Oh man so much hype,I love cross section illustrations and I love his work, despite not be a star wars fan I love going through the star wars cross section illustrations very often, would love to see them one day animated. Thanks for conducting this interview did not know I needed it.
Thanks for these videos! I had so many cross section books. I love the interviews with the artists Some ideas for future books, The Secret Oceans by Betty Ballantine, Dinotopia by James Gurney.
Love your videos! I hope someday you can do a video on Stephen Biesty, Walter Wick, Chris Van Allsburg, Ron Barrett, or late illustrators such as Richard Scarry, Jill Barklem or Bill Peet!
03:12 I bought the Lego UCS AT-AT precisely because of this guy’s cross-sectional illustrations of the AT-AT from the book I had as a kid! I display the Lego set like his illustration with sections of the set removed so you can see the interior! And yes it is full up with speeder bikes and a bunch of Lego snow troopers and scout trooper minifigures! 😂
What's your favourite Star Wars vehicle or location?
I’m a sucker for a Star Destroyer
Original Tie fighter and Slave 1
I'll second Slave 1 and throw in speeder bikes.

I know. All that detail? I wouldn’t know where to start!

Always used to check out these books from the library as a kid and marvel at them. Cool to see the artist behind it!
Very high on my library check-out list too!

Great interview. Loved those books growing up. I always liked trying to make sense of how the spaceships worked.
