The Australian Anime

- There's an Anime based on an Australian story, who knew? Deltora Quest was originally an Australian Children's Novel Series written by a woman in Sydney called Emily Rodda, and it was later adapted into an Anime. I think this is a little insane, so I made a whole video about it.

There's an Australian Anime? Who knew? THIS GUY KNEW!
Cool
Hell yeah, I made sure to buy this on DVD as soon as I saw it
I knew I've watched it when I was a kid on ABC3
now you can find the entire series subbed! if you go to certain sites rejoice deltora quest fans!
Due to licensing limitations, Deltora Quest is not available for streaming on Crunchyroll in my country; Australia. Yeah that seems about right.
Seriously!? Bruh We made this show come into existence, and it's more known to us than anyone, let us watch it!!
What bullshit... I was about to try and watch it
Watch it for free on RUclips the whole English dub is there
Do you know if the subbed version is available to *acquire* anywhere?
Remembered watching this back on Abc23 and reading the novels as a kid, absolute nostalgia
same
I honestly was so excited when I heard there was going to be a deltora quest anime on abc because id read every book by then even had the book of monsters and I watched every episode without fail all I've ever wanted is a proper rpg game of it now
Remover watching random episodes
God this was one of my favourites to watch on ABC3.
Yes it came on at like 7 or 8 at night
Those nights were my parents let me stay up and watch Deltora Quest were lit
ayeee
i was obsessed with this as a kid because you could never find the anime art style anywhere in australia - thank youuu!!
I loved Emily Rodda's books as a kid, I found out about the series in 2017 after a friend told me about it, watched it then remembered I'd seen it before on 23
the first anime that got me hooked in the story , rather than just being awe at the *giant robots* that dominated my childhood
thank you Jennifer rowe!
I wish you had mentioned the other two Deltora Quest book series (which were never adapted), and the other books connected to them, The Three Doors trilogy, the Star of Deltora series, the Tales of Deltora book, the Deltora Book of Monsters. But you can't get to everything in one video, I know that. So with that in mind, this is a really good video! Oh, and Rowan of Rin is also part of the same world, although it's not clear in those books.
The books are way better than the anime, but some of the episodes worked really well. I love the books so much. Rodda's books are a master class in plot and character while being very straightfoward and simply written. She also tackles contemporary issues quite well, more so in the second and third series. Which were also more detailed and longer. Though the longest and most detailed, I'd say, were the Three Doors books. I don't like the character designs much in the anime though, except Barda and the Torans.
I've never read any of her series' in full, that's why I didn't really talk about any of the books. We read the first Rowan of Rin in school, the Three Doors I read a bit of the first one, and I've read the first 2 Deltora Quest books, and I tried picking up the second series after I finished the anime 10 years ago. But I did read summaries of the other 2 Deltora Quest series and they seemed interesting.
Hold up... roan of rin is in the same world? I thought it was just the same author I have those books and never knew
@@Brentonius_III yeah, rin is an island east of deltora
@@jamesnewcombe6800 I've now read everything in deltora except the series about the ship cant find it anywhere
Books are often better than animation. Sure writing is hard but making animation is harder.
I do think this would work well as a live action netflix series or movie series. The lore and world can be easily translated just like Lord of the rings and Harry potter. It should taken up as an australian fantasy series come to life. Its all ready and waiting to bw made
yeah and sadly nobody has even noticed it yet :(
Hollywood is just too busy remaking and rebooting other movies right now to start something new
Lord of the rings is not easily translated. Goddamn lord of the rings is complicated.
Dub and Sub are currently on youtube from accounts named Deltora Quest and ToranSubs, respectively. Searching episode 1 of DQ should show both in the first few results, hope it helps anyone interested in watching while nobody's copyright-claiming fansubs
Thank you for driving the point across how insane this concept is because I rarely see it talked about. I grew up on Toonami as a kid and loved anime, then discovered these books around the same time. My small 8-year-old mind was blown to discover that my two worlds collided and there was an anime series. And I was further shocked by how faithful the adaptation is! Again, awesome video.
Thank you for making a video on this! The nostalgia is real right now.
I may just be a sheep herder lol, but I still love this show and it too was my childhood, tho sadly not apart of my education Hahaha, your video was interesting I always realized that this show was different to other anime and cartoons and so it always drew my interest and I can't even count the amount of times I've rewatched the show and never gotten sick of it even a little, tbh I recently even forced my younger brother to watch it with me and he quite enjoyed it, it was quite fun teasing him about the twist of leafs dad and doom (gonna try lesson spoilers) were actually in opposite positions before the show revealed it when he was constantly guessing who the heir was lol. I had heard that deltora quest was related to Australians somehow but it never hooked my interest, but I'm glad I saw your video, always glad to learn more about the show, and even tho they were only bonus episodes I definitely enjoyed just that bit of icing after the show with the group going around and hunting down the last of the ols. I'm curious why you didn't mention the second season of the novels? Do you know about them? Do you like or dislike them? Are you saving that content for another video? Would you like a boosted graphics enhancement of the show or do you believe it should remain pure?
You know, Deltora Quest was so ingrained into my childhood I didn't even realise that Emily Rodda was Australian, literally living like 2 hours from me. Like the fact that it probably wasn't sold or was as well known in other counties is hard to fathom honestly. And it's funny too, Cartoon Network also had other anime like Naruto, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, Beyblade and Bakugan. However, Deltora Quest is the one I remember the most, even out of those big-name anime.
what's sucks is that cartoon network pretends like it was never on their channel in the first place!!!
Dude I loved this show as a kid! all the cool monsters and characters really inspired me to draw cool shit just like that and it sucks that a auzzie anime isn't talked about that much. One day I hope to make my own cartoon that's unique just like deltora quest
I never had them as a project in my schooling. But a friend of mine was in a class that did when the show was being released on CN and was absolutely blown away when we first saw the trailers.
We were doing Deltora Quest during primary school and we. Did the same thing, we’d read about one of the gems and then watch the show for what we’ve read. We made it to the Lake of Tears, we were at the part where they just met Saldeen, and we were watching it and the final bell of the year went and I have never been able to watch it since. Sometimes I just fucking love my recommended, cheers Kyle.
I LOVED Deltora Quest as a kid. That intro brings back so much nostalgia too! I’ve just started picking up the Deltora Quest manga and im really excited to read it because the manga was a part of my childhood too. Im excited!!
It also used to be on Western Networks here in the states around 2011 on Hub Network
God, I used to watch this every day after school. I was always looking forward to it. I remember all the monsters and the horror I went through with the Amethyst monster- it was so scary for me at the time!! And I also first learned the names of these cool gems watching this series haha. It's amazing that I'm remembering it now, all of a sudden, 12 years later... I never knew it was an Australian show too!!
i gotta be honest, in the US when i was in middle school, i devoured these books. i honestly loved them and still do! only recently found (and binged) the anime for nostalgia's sake
I loved everything about this show and books, especially the fighting sequences, characters and of course monsters
aYo wtf?? As an Aussie high schooler I can confirm I never had to read this in primary or secondary school... and we CERTAINLY didn't get to watch the anime. Man I'm so jealous :0 it was pure luck that I happened to read the books when I was in primary school!
Everyone had to read the book when I was in primary same with my brother 5 years older then I, and the anime came out as I left high school and got them on DVD cause no steaming back than
@@Magikct Ooohh that's so cool... the only reason I know about this series is because I just so happened to borrow the books from the library when I was in... idk, 4th, 5th or 6th grade??
Bruh my teacher is making me learning about Deltora quest like years after it was made
You mentioned there not being a sub and that is slowly being fixed! There is a youtube channel called ToranSubs who is nearly done subbing the whole show.
Such a shame Shadowlands and Dragons didn't get adapted, love this show
Deltora was popular in Canada too.
I never read the actual book of Deltora Quest, but I definitely watched and loved the anime series of Deltora Quest on tv as a kid. As a kid back then, I was really invested in the story of a young boy going on a adventure finding the gems, while battling cool looking mystical knights, monsters and more. The Shadow Lord is what I remember the most, I thought he so terrifying which he is one of the reasons why I really watched the show, and I remember me and my older brother getting so excited for the finale of the show. I had such a good time watching this series as a kid and now I as a 18 year old looking back at it, I still think it's cool. Good memories I've had.
This show aired from 2014-16 in Pakistan I remember watching this in fifth grade I loved this show
I'm Brazilian and I read all the 15 books when younger. I found the anime way back then and watched (nor every episode) and I LOVE the third opening (by Delta Goodrem). I also played the DS game from the serie!
There’s as DS game!?
Well that’s were my moneys going
I knew about this. Well the novels.
I remember when i saw there was adult to help teenagers to their quest I was like there is something strange here, in anime don't exist responsable adults! In end I find out it was based by australian book and i said now it make sense
We watched this entire show in primary school about 5 years ago and I randomly had a flashback of it today leading me to search up "show where you find gems to put in belt" and eventually finding this lmfao
I love Deltora Quest the anime was a huge part of my childhood and i just finished watching the whole series, i hope that one day they'll make an anime for the rest of the books, but it'll probably never happen but hey here's hoping!
Deltora quest is really popular in Serbia
Japan also got a Nintendo DS game based in deltora quest
i definitely remember seeing deltora quest air on either toasted tv or on abc
I've always loved this series as an American child, and only as I'm writing this, I realize that I first encountered it when I lived in Japan. Huh. Anyways, I was aware of the anime, and watched it when it came to The Hub, as, on the U.S. Air base in Okinawa, that was the only channel that played it as what I now realize were reruns. I learned much later after rediscovering the series all over again, (I never forgot it, but decided out of nowhere to buy the entire set and read every one of them) that the author was Australian, and it wasn't until yet later that I learned how weird it was that it spread so far, especially to Japan. All this to say, I never once considered that this really is The Australian Anime.
Emily Rodda is an Aussie?
I never knew
I was wondering why nobody talks about this series that I love, now I know that it’s specifically Australian.
This and Dragon Ball Z: Kai were the only anime I ever got to watch in the episode by episode format on TV before I got internet and could watch whatever and I'm surprised I remembered so much about the characters
I'm rewatching this show rn coz I actually loved it. Lmao I never knew it counted as Australian though, and that's crazy for me
now you can find the entire series subbed! if you go to certain sites rejoice deltora quest fans!
Who here is from Australia like me?
I'm from aus, vikky.
I'm from Sydney and currently watching the show.
YOOOOOO I REMEMBER THISSSS
My year 5 teacher had us listen to the books on a cd while we did our work which was pretty cool
I watched this series alongside naruto on a turkish cartoon channel that turned into an anime channel after 10 pm might be the first anime I watched I dont remember anything about it besides belt and the opal stone though
2:20
Me:
Umm, excuse me, What???
Have u looked up deltora quest on youtube???
I wished I read the books, but sadly I wasn't the one to read fantasy
Goddamn I wish my primary school used Deltora Quest as an English study Q_Q We read Rodda's other work Rowan of Rin instead. I was already a huge Deltora Quest fanatic at that time, I would have aced that subject so hard. And I had bought all 4 official DVDs at the time and I'm glad to own them even now because I often go back and rewatch it and surprisingly, the story still holds up aside from being cornier as an adult lol.
I've recently rewatched it in Japanese too to see if it's any better and surprisingly, both sub and dub are pretty even, maybe with the dub being slightly better. Both of the voice acting sounds decent but still also corny, but I actually think the dub had a MUCH better use of soundtrack and sound effects. Scenes that were silent or had odd bg music choices in the sub were awkward meanwhile in the dub, they add fitting music and I honestly prefer the English soundtrack over the Japanese, since they're both different from each other. Also the dub does add a bit more flavour to the dialogue for me, like making certain lines feel more casual and less stiff, and even adding back and forths that were never present in the Japanese version (which I especially noticed in the Jasmine vs Doom fight, there was a conversation in a scene that was originally silent). And there are points in the Japanese version where the voice acting lowkey doesn't match how it's animated and the dub actually does it better 0_0
Also weirdly enough, the Japanese version changed some names. Steven is Lucas, Nevets is Scar and Doom is 'Joker' (which is absolute blasphemy, dude has the coolest name already). And Lief's Bushtown alias was Cherry instead of Twig. But if you watch the Japanese version made by ToranSubs, I love their little notes to clarify them using book-accurate names instead of a direct translation.
But I remember way back when, discovering the post-climax episodes on youtube and being so floored to hear a Delta Goodrum song as the opening, I initially thought it was some kind of edit made by the poster, it was just so hard to believe at first because that's so cool!
I'm prolly gonna watch it again cuz yknow. Nostalgia
"where do you live?" " D O O R "
I remember watching the anime when I was in primary school then reading the books I still have the books
omg i forgot that it was part of our curriculum in like ... year 5?? idk that's just wild
I watched it fully dubbed in Spanish like 8 years ago
I remember getting this anime in a school catalogue which is why I'm a fat ass weeb it was my first anime
it was my first anime as well
Jasmine was the original Australian waifu.
Now why didn't Deltora Quest have Australian accents if the show was primarily seen in Australia?
There was also a phantom hour glass rip off only in Japan
Great read if your an avid fantasy reader but you're under the weather and need something more easy to digest.
Fellow Aussie! who watch this and bayblade?
And was the first anime they watch
I watched this and bakugan as a kid
this and yugioh for me
This series was my childhood
the nostalgia
Are there any Serbians here? It was also airing in our country. Nostalgija
fuck man, almost forgot abt this show, I literally read and watched it in school
Now i know
Now you do.
@@KyleEntertainment ever gonna read demon slayer i wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it is a top tier shonen
It was my first manga
7:06 yup she is hot but i do not like how she doesn't get any punishment for playing Lief's feelings again and again
I remember this shit from 2007
*Sheep Herders* Thanks Kyle,
Kyle, 'Deltore Quest' is not the first time an anime is based on an Australian novel. That goes to 'Lucy of the Southern Rainbow' back in 1982.
I didn't say it was the first, but that's interesting non-the-less.
GODAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA EEEE GODDDDD
Cultural Proximity I imagine.
This deserves more views, fuck j**tube's system. You might have converted me into giving this show a watch. During your talk about 'artistic choice of CGI' I immediately thought about Beastars. Have you read/watched it? You should.
