Been a genji player since launch (ew i know) the dragons cinematic alone is what got me into OW in the first place and I can easily say genji has some of the most fun gameplay out of any hero and his playstyle feels so unique. Once you fully understand his movement/combos he just clicks and serves such a fun role and in my opinion could have one of the highest skill caps in the game, as we've seen from the pros. I just wish Blizzard had the balls to make him good instead of absolutely gutting him by introducing heroes that all seem to have a genji counter in their kit now.
Blizzard doesn't know how to treat people as equal human being. Imagine they knowing how to do a proper balance game with Brig, Sigma and Bap being meta since their launch. This game is a joke if you think more often.
The one change I want for Genji is frame 1 deflect, because it seriously pisses me off how I'm always getting punished for good timing on my part: I'm really good at anticipating shots/abilities from my enemies, and I almost always activate my deflect right before they shoot me so I have maximum damage with my shurikens, because Genji needs that kind of damage optimisations to do almost anything. But then, half of the time, the sound of deflect plays and I just die. Deflect clearly went off, because there was the sound, but it didn't actually deflect the attack of the guy I'm aiming at. And before people say it's a ping issue, that's probably part of the issue, but definitely not all of it, because deflect often goes on cooldown as I die, meaning the ability was definitely active, and I have had very low ping for years now and keep having this problem whenever I play Genji (which isn't that often, I'm more of a support main nowadays, but still, I'd like to have fun with one of my favourite dps heroes when I do queue for dps, andI can't imagine that I'm the only one experiencing this)
This is definitely an issue for me because to compensate you have to use it early meaning less damage and more predictable. Honestly there’s alot of things they can do for this character to make him viable while still being balanced. Give him this a 20 dmg reduction on dash or give him both cooldowns after blade like doom. Dmg reduction on dash because ideally he’s SUPPOSED to dash through as many people as possible for ult charge yet half the time doing that means you die to random spam or a Moira orb.Doesn’t break the character because how often do you hit Genji while dashing but still helps him survive a bit longer. Giving cooldowns after blade just gives him much more survivability and choices when it comes to getting out or being aggressive.
This as well as another timing thing. When you use dash perfectly to avoid something but take damage from where you were when you dashed instead of where you were going. Visually it looks like you moved from your own view and you can even see the dash effect from others perspective but genji just gets hit from where he was. Making his hurtboxes move to where it ends straight away, would be so much better
Yep, both abilities of Genji are janky and are not consistent. The deflect should definitely work earlier, and the dash should prevent damage from where you are not even at anymore, should work like Tracer. Now those would be good buffs to reward high skill.

@@gilscheiner8097 Up there with MEI? lmao. he's annoying in the right hands, sure, but at least he doesn't take away your ability to literally play the game you payed for.
Deflect is the problem with Genji. The deflect nerf was absolutely ludicrious, but then it happened before all the busted heroes and changes popped up. Now, he has a dead ability, he can't defend himself against so many key abilities and just hopes to burst them down, which is no longer possible. Even the abilities it could make plays with, it won't, because the tiny hitbox makes the enemy able to just ignore it and shoot around. Thats why the only way to make Genji viable was to up his damage to insane levels, but in reality what he needs is deflect to not be the worst ability in the game. And also, the dragon blade nerf to 110 damage is the most stupid change I've ever seen.
The Blade damage nerf hurt my soul bro lmao! Vanilla blade was already so-so but after that nerf it feels borderline useless to try to burst down any hero above 200 HP. Especially if they're getting healed. Sometimes even the 200 HP heroes as well. Blade timing now needs to be even more precise if you don't have a ton of resources dumped into you
Deflect's hitbox was absolutely busted before they changed it, and the only people complaining were the ones who abused the hell out of it and developed terrible habits as a result. The oversized hitbox rewarded you for merely activating deflect rather than precisely timing it. Also I can't believe you seriously talked about people being able to shoot around him like it's a bad thing, it was clowns like you who often said "just don't shoot at a deflecting Genji" in response to people complaining about its bullshit hitbox that punished you for shooting while Genji was anywhere near the vicinity. Of all the things a Genji main can complain about, it is very telling what kind of player you were when deflect's hitbox is your main issue. Get good, and shut up. Deflect's hitbox isn't the reason you're bad at him.
dreadburnz While I agree his deflect hitbox was busted, the answer to that was not making it busted in the opposite direction. Current deflect’s hitbox is dogshit, so much so that you can literally hit him dead in the center and kill him lol.
Buff for genji -turn at least 25 hp into armor or shield -revert the fire speed of secondary fire back to .65 - let genji access the wall jump reset because if hanzo gets a double jump, then genji should get a triple jump
I play OW from time to time. Later on in my OW 'career' I decided to see if I could play genji well from barely ever playing him before. I struggled with consistency (don't we all?) but when I played well it was so satisfying. So many of the new hero releases just seemed to poop on Genji so hard, from Morira's attacks that track and go through reflect or Echo flying to Sombra's hacks etc. It just increasingly felt harder to play Genji and when you (and your enemies) can swap Hero on the fly it just seems like a massive risk to even try.
I wish they can bring back the melee dash cancel back because it will increase his potential to assassinate 200 hp characters. Due to all of the stuns, he is a charcter which has high risk but low reward. By giving him higher burst damage i feel like he will rely on his ult less
even though I get why they nerfed it at the time, it FEELs so good to pull off a instant 3-hit combo. It's also a high risk/high reward maneuver because you have to be in melee range to pull it off in a FPS game. I think they should add it back
omg i love the call back to that old supertf video where he played genji against boston in owl, this montage was so similar to the one in his video and i love it 5:06
Nice video and nice editing too! Compared to the Dva one this one is easier to digest, so don't feel discouraged. You're just finding your perfect recipe and you still have a lot of heroes to experiment with.
Awesome video! I barely play OW anymore, Genji is truly what made OW fun for me, being able to nearly OTP him only swapping on certain maps/matchups. Now, however, you're basically throwing if you pick him into remotely competent players who can play around him and make appropriate hero swaps. Hopefully OW2 will allow him to shine again.
I'd love to pick rate and change breakdowns of each character. This type of content really gets me thinking of Overwatch again as I have been out if the loop for quite a while at this point.
Love that this is becoming a series. Definitely would say this one was easier to follow than D.Va's video, but then again D.Va's kit makes it hard to track all those changes. Excited to see more from this series!
Honestly there is so much working against genji’s playstyle now that I think blizzard should give him some ridiculous buff like making his dragon blade do 150 damage per slash so that he can instantly assassinate people with dash+slash. Another suggestion I have heard thrown around is to add his bleed damage from beta back in but I don’t think that would change too much.
I think the shorter 10 minutes feels great on these videos. I have personally experienced playing with, as, and against Dva throughout the years that I don't think I need to know everything. I just want to know what was great and what was bad in a compact 10 minute video, just like this Genji vid.
@@inm7879 would you rather fight a genji or a tracer, doom or echo? He's the least annoying of the flankers because he's least likely to just kill you outright and doesn't remove your ability to play the game like sombra.
I enjoyed the D.Va video, but I also love looking at numbers and stats, haha! This video was smooth though. I think the more narrative-driven approach is a lot more accessible, especially since I think it appeals to people who weren't around and want the history lesson in a more organic context. It reads a lot less like a wiki page, and a lot more like a journalistic piece. Props, man. This was awesome!
got probably over 600 hours on the dude. recently I started playing more echo and hit gm with split playtime between the two but man oh man is genji a painful hero. Sure most of the new heroes counter him, but another thing is that people have just gotten better over time. I feel like back in the OG dive meta, people didn't know how to counter blade as well. I seriously don't know why they are so afraid to give him straight up buffs. His popularity is definitely very good for the game and playerbase.
@@SpeedKing.. and Echo literally flies, Genji is NOT equiped to deal with a flying hero that often has a pocket anyway. Not only that but she has a pretty much instakill beam ability which is yet another counter to deflect.

@@joeschipper6465 Yep. Genji is my second most played hero below tracer. It's always been that way, but I haven't played genji properly in so long. Every time I get the itch to play him, I'm reminded of why I don't play him as much anymore. Literally everything counters him nowadays, to the point where it's legitimately boring to try and play into heroes like bap, and sigma. I'm all for counter-playing rather than counter picking. For example, people always consider mccree a counter to tracer, but I genuinely enjoy tracer vs cree matchups. But so many heroes counter genji so hard, that it's literally not even worth the effort. Honestly most of the post launch heroes have just been so oppressive. Like god damn, when has sigma ever been bad since he launched? That hero has seen so much play time it's unreal.
Keep this content going! I really enjoyed these past two vids and hope you keep the series going (even though they maybe won`t perform well). Also, what is the song in the background of the montage called?
Great video that really encapsulates in a concise manner how genji felt and performed throughout OW1. My only suggestion would be to possibly add global changes like hero additions, roll lock, and ult charge increases to the timeline
I saw the Shadoburn 6K live and it was so fun becuase it was such a random game so not a lot of people were watching, and then the next day it was just everywhere.
Dude these videos are awesome! Its exciting to see your unique ow content karq ;) Sad to hear that the dva Video didnt perform but please dont stop making this series im lovin it!!!🙏
Great video honestly! Doing a "look back" on aspects and characters throughout the game's lifespan is such a great idea and have loved these types of videos. If you ever do another one of these I think Rein, Lucio, Hog, Mercy, Soldier, or Reaper would be great candidates!
In my Opinion the amount of counters that happened is also a major factor. Double shield with sigma,Cree, brig ,bap ,moira just makes it sometimes annoying for a genji to thrive. Plus the idea of a secondary tank also made it hard. But genji is also obv high skill ceiling. So there’s that
This format works WAY better than the Dva one. The discussion within the narrative of OW and metas is super engaging, and the lowered emphasis on stats makes it a lot easier to parse.
This was a much easier to follow style than the previous ones (too many numbers) so I think this is definitely the way to go. The timeline graphs help heaps too
Honestly I really liked this episode and the d.va video. But this is definitely more polished and refined than the d.va one. I loved the editing showing genji clips! Also I really respect you being so straight up and saying that the previous video didn’t do well and it’s upsetting, I’m sorry to hear that! You make great content and I’ll always watch it :)
As a "veteran" Genji main, being in mid diamond low masters in 2017 - 2018, I think he was always good at what he was supposed to do, being an assassin and flanker, assuming you had the skill to play him decently enough as you could get punished with relative ease. But, as the meta changed and more heroes released, he began constantly being nerfed indirectly in one way or another. Basically he couldn't just get behind the enemy team, try to inflict some damage, distract enemies or maybe kill the enemy support anymore without paying extra attention or being useless. He just falls off in terms of damage per second as his time window in which he can do something before getting noticed by the enemy team and flashed, stunned, etc is very small. Not to mention the bugs he's had in the past few years. All this made me quit overwatch for good, though genji still remains to this day one of my signature characters in video games. It's one of those cases where concept is good but execution lacks.
I already liked the Dva one but actually it’s better like that. I like the idea of putting some owl clips when the characters are at their best. Cant wait to see the next hero

@@nbnkenji8204 mei relies on her own team to capitalize on her walls, people don't play her very often, and she has a massive hitbox
I love this semi-documentary style vid! Would love to see a similar style video on Mei’s history and her current quest to be viable ❤️
Blade timing now needs to be even more precise if you don't have a ton of resources dumped into you
Yeah, instead of nerfing damage they could just make it not boostable anymore
110 damage blade is so fucking dogshit
Buff for genji
-turn at least 25 hp into armor or shield
-revert the fire speed of secondary fire back to .65
- let genji access the wall jump reset because if hanzo gets a double jump, then genji should get a triple jump
tough luck
Nope, fuck genji
I play OW from time to time. Later on in my OW 'career' I decided to see if I could play genji well from barely ever playing him before. I struggled with consistency (don't we all?) but when I played well it was so satisfying.
So many of the new hero releases just seemed to poop on Genji so hard, from Morira's attacks that track and go through reflect or Echo flying to Sombra's hacks etc. It just increasingly felt harder to play Genji and when you (and your enemies) can swap Hero on the fly it just seems like a massive risk to even try.
I had completely forgotten how fun it used to be to watch genji gameplay. I hope he finds his place in Overwatch 2.
I think they should add it back
omg i love the call back to that old supertf video where he played genji against boston in owl, this montage was so similar to the one in his video and i love it 5:06
"What happened to genji"
Blizz after killing the hero with bap and brig: heeeeeell if i know 🤐
Nice video and nice editing too! Compared to the Dva one this one is easier to digest, so don't feel discouraged. You're just finding your perfect recipe and you still have a lot of heroes to experiment with.
Please make more of these videos. Really love seeing these breakdowns as someone who is still nostalgic for some earlier metas.
Such an iconic hero, it’s always a treat to watch someone play him at his highest potential
Apparently, he has no changes in OW2. Bye bye, Genji. He just can’t catch a break.
@@redlamper This is why I won't be buying OW2.
@@nonyabusiness6100 Isn’t it technically free though? Basically, you buy the PvE. I’m not sure, it’s confusing.
His blade nerf that brought it down to 110 dmg still makes no sense, its not like he could kill anything with 120 lmao
Those visualizations are crazy.. like the production value is otherworldly. So fucking intuitive and information comes at the perfect moments.
This video was a lot more digestible and telling a story definitely made it more interesting. Thanks for the vid KarQ lips.
you should mark significant events in the graph, like "role queue included" and "dive comp started"
I think I have never seen a character in a video game get nerfed so many times in its life cycle.
Good video Nathan. Liking and commenting in the hopes this one doesn't go the way of the DVA vid.
Watched your stream earlier rly appreciate your hard work to make videos for us.
Very sorry to hear that this series is not doing well views wise, it's very fun to watch!
godddd i miss the glory days of genji
i know i dont it was pure misery
supports don't for sure
@@inm7879 would you rather fight a genji or a tracer, doom or echo?
He's the least annoying of the flankers because he's least likely to just kill you outright and doesn't remove your ability to play the game like sombra.
@@lootbaglu Tracer < Echo < Genji < Pocketed Echo
I enjoyed the D.Va video, but I also love looking at numbers and stats, haha! This video was smooth though. I think the more narrative-driven approach is a lot more accessible, especially since I think it appeals to people who weren't around and want the history lesson in a more organic context. It reads a lot less like a wiki page, and a lot more like a journalistic piece. Props, man. This was awesome!
Every rework, new hero, or general change to a hero it made genji have to work even harder to play against it
got probably over 600 hours on the dude. recently I started playing more echo and hit gm with split playtime between the two but man oh man is genji a painful hero.
This was awesome to watch, great video man. I'd like to see Rein next, but I dont know if I could bare it 😥. Have a great rest of your day...
These videos are so high quality! Great work KarQ, can't wait to see the future heroes be done :)
Simple, every single character that was released post launch, except Orisa, has some counter to him
And Ashe. And echo.
@@SpeedKing.. you think Ashe and Echo don't counter Genji?
@@camerongrondzki2716 yes poor Ashe keeps getting dived by genji
@@SpeedKing.. uh, just coach gun away, dynamite around his deflect, Bob his blade, keep distance since you're literally a sniper.
@@SpeedKing.. and Echo literally flies, Genji is NOT equiped to deal with a flying hero that often has a pocket anyway. Not only that but she has a pretty much instakill beam ability which is yet another counter to deflect.
A sad tale of a man who lost his body, them lost his power and agility and to end it, lost everyone's respect.
What's with the buff/Nerf He got in the Patch where dooms CD Reset faster when He ulted. Genjis Shuriken dmg went from 28 to 29 and blade dmg from 120 to 110. Great Video dude as a genji Main myself it was nice to see what ma boy went through xD
i use him in diamond alot. really good sometimes. Genji is amazing against the rights heroes
I absolutely loved how you showed OWL matches from the month of his pick rate! Super cool :D Love this video style
Genji autumn and Genji winter lol Sometimes I really love KarQ's wording
I havent touched this game in years. As one who used to main Genji alot, this'll be a treat to watch.
Genji had a sad history..
Super well made video KarQ. felt more like a very fun documentary then an analysis! keep it up cant wait to see some of my mains on this seires
Notice how the meta and esport was thriving anytime genji was good.
I didn't pick up overwatch till late 2020 so getting a perspective on heroes that have been in the game since day one is really cool to see. I think the D.va vid was a tad long but this one was perfect.
That buff in 2020 was the best moments of my life xD
14% seems like a healthy pick rate when you consider there are 17 other dps characters and only 2 can be in a match.
i was thinking the same ... a pick rate like the early years with 40%+ wasnt healthy at all
yeah but this is the hero who was the most popular for 3 years straight, 14% is miniscule and i think whats more telling of his actual power is that no one would ever flex to him, its only one tricks who ever play him
@@joeschipper6465 Yep.
All DPS are bad now
Great video, the montage in the middle was a nice touch
This is SO WELL MADE! Keep it up Karq!
This video is so well done and its very nostalgic to see what happened to my favorite overwatch agent and see how he compared over the 5 years
this was a great format--the pro plays in between was great to see
Amazing vid karq!! I’d love to see more of this series! Keep it up!
Keep this content going! I really enjoyed these past two vids and hope you keep the series going (even though they maybe won`t perform well). Also, what is the song in the background of the montage called?
Fantasy Meiko Nakahara
@@asamedeus7829 you are a god, thx
You can say what you want but Genji plays are the most satisfying and beautiful plays in the world
Great video that really encapsulates in a concise manner how genji felt and performed throughout OW1. My only suggestion would be to possibly add global changes like hero additions, roll lock, and ult charge increases to the timeline
Great video! Loved the new format in comparasion with the d.va video, nice owl montage too.
7:27 love that Arikadou reference ❤️ 🥑
Much better and condensed information , the edit was also great ! I personally prefer the 10-15 min range videos , keep it up.
The editing was sick!
Actually the Dva video was easier to follow and understand visually. Sad for the low views, but I guess that just Overwatch state overall :(
I just realized how close to Raiden from Mgr Genji looks.
I saw the Shadoburn 6K live and it was so fun becuase it was such a random game so not a lot of people were watching, and then the next day it was just everywhere.
I liked both videos and will watch new videos on this series as long as they come, hope this one goes better :)
Sorry to hear about the bad performance, I really think you upped your game on this one, well done
Dude these videos are awesome! Its exciting to see your unique ow content karq ;) Sad to hear that the dva Video didnt perform but please dont stop making this series im lovin it!!!🙏
Jeez Ana's speed buff on her nano was removed that early in the game's life cycle? I felt like I played her for years with it lol
Great video honestly! Doing a "look back" on aspects and characters throughout the game's lifespan is such a great idea and have loved these types of videos. If you ever do another one of these I think Rein, Lucio, Hog, Mercy, Soldier, or Reaper would be great candidates!
Amazing video karq, keep up the good work bro
In my
Opinion the amount of counters that happened is also a major factor.
Double shield with sigma,Cree, brig ,bap ,moira just makes it sometimes annoying for a genji to thrive. Plus the idea of a secondary tank also made it hard. But genji is also obv high skill ceiling. So there’s that
really enjoying these "history of overwatch" kind of videos. maybe you can do one for the general history for how the game is played overall.
This is actually pretty cool bro I hope you continue this series
This format works WAY better than the Dva one. The discussion within the narrative of OW and metas is super engaging, and the lowered emphasis on stats makes it a lot easier to parse.
Genji is the best hero they have ever made. He is the most fun.
Been a Genji main since launch, excellent video that expresses a lot of the same opinions I hold on his position in the state of the game. Great work!
The Dva video felt a little dense, this one was much easier to watch. Well done
When you did the Dva video I was like PLEASE GENJI NEXT and u did it!
I enjoyed both this and the D.Va video, but this was definitely an improvement. Hope this video does well cause these are really fun
This was much better than the DVA one to watch. Keep up the good work
He is still my main since season 2 and it's hard to main him nowdays, but this hero makes so much fun if you know how to play him
This right here. This is peak OW content. Superbly done Mr. KarQ!
Ah yes, the Genji redemption period... what a glorious patch
Very informative and fun to watch as always KarQ! Keep it up man, I've learned a lot of cool tricks and tips from your videos.
I already liked the Dva one but actually it’s better like that. I like the idea of putting some owl clips when the characters are at their best. Cant wait to see the next hero
Loving this video format, especially with the OWL clips!
Loved that montage. Absolutely brilliant way of creating nostalgia
Really enjoyed this karq, cool video concept!
Is it possible to play him in higher ranks?
:Yes
Is it fun?
:no.
This the short answer
