These girls are really talented, and I love seeing a youthful, natural, age appropriate concept, but I just have such a hard time with their ages. Every time I see them, I worry about them. They're so young and I worry that they are being negatively impacted by this industry and this sudden extreme popularity. I really hope that their company and families are taking measures to make sure that they are being taken care of mentally/emotionally since they are still at such a fragile and impressionable age.

Yes I loved New Jeans because of their concept and how they romanticized it , I keep telling people that they're marketed for people that are the same age as them being young and not giving a care in the world just having fun, it's too relatable. even if ador didnt have any bad intentions with cookie, its very obvious newjeans was marketed towards a western audience. one member is viet, two are australian, & all can speak english. they take inspiration from 90s/early 2000s' american aesthetics & they sing in english. it takes two seconds to look up cookie slang & see its' referring to women's private parts. they said they had a team of english professors so somebody was not doing they job. the excuses their fans make with the "its abt a cd" "theyre baking cookies for a crush" and its like YES they probably very much are talking abt their music & their crush & that's the entire point of a double entendre. also they say it's just ppl being weird when it's like how else do u want me to interpret "take it, don't break it, i wanna see you taste it" & how danielle sings "looking at my cookie"? the solution would be to change the lyrics entirely or delete it from their discography which would be hard bc ppl can still listen to it on physical.

FYI none of the NewJeans members are considered adults in South Korea until next year. I think thats a very important thing to note. Yes while 2 are 18, they are not considered adults in Korea until they are 19 internationally.
Personally I can't get behind NewJeans. There's way too many questions about their ceo and company for me to comfortably listen to them. If the company couldn't see that cookie was a problem, even if it was an honest mistake/misunderstanding at the beginning, I dont even want to know what happens behind the scenes. That company statement they put out was so bad. I just hope the girls have people in their real lives protecting them.
Now with your note about not knowing what to do with minors debuting. The rule I follow is, if any part of their concept/music/looks is not age appropriate I would actively/consciously not listen. If it toes that line, I wouldn't listen but also won't skip if it comes up.
NewJeans firmly falls in the I will actively not listen because of cookie and everything surrounding their company. Will that change in the future? Maybe but unless I see changes I won't listen to their music.

i watch the mv. im obsessed. the chill vibe of the song and appealing aesthetic of the mv has me floored bc it was original and fresh for kpop and i love krnb too. hyein rly caught my attention with her visuals. i wait for hype boy mvs to drop and watch all of them. at this point im invested in how good this group seems so i google them.
every single member is younger than me. hyein, who i noticed first and was thinking 'wow she's stunning' is 14. 14. i then dig a bit deeper and find out ab min heejin. im DISGUSTED. im also upset bc i want to stan these clearly talented girls with great music but refuse to support the debut of such young children under such a questionable person.
and that's where i am now. i cant deny that nj have put out the best music that kpop has heard in a long time, and although i do listen to their music, i dont stan them and i dont know if i ever will. the concept of nj is a nice idea: teens singing about relatable teen things for other teens to listen to. but that's the problem: they are teenagers. when their sevn year contract is up, the youngest members will only just have become of legal age (19 in korea). that's when idols should be starting their career. it's messed up and i cant get behind it.

While I like that the Y2K aesthetic is popular right now, what makes me worried w/ NewJeans is that having a trend as your main concept (even making the group name kind of related to it) and making it a part of your identity as a group, might limit their future comebacks. Trends come and go. When they have an image or concept change in the future, a lot of people may not be happy about it.
For me, as someone who grew up in the 2000s, I admit that I find it hard to relate to them as they are so young even if they have the aesthetic that I had in my childhood. That said, I liked Attention a lot, even if I will never probably connect with the group or support them directly (i feel too uncomfortable regarding MHJ) but good music is good music.
Btw, regarding the title of nation's first love, it's not just sth that's given to the prettiest pure-looking idol. Suzy was actually the first idol to have that title, and that's more because of her acting jobs (Architecture 101, specifically) and not her idol career. The previous ones are actresses, and all of them are household names in SK. It has to be universally acknowledged by the GP and not because a news outlet said so. Though from what I can see Minji(?) maybe can become an actress, she has the vibe, and if she gets the right roles she'll probably get it.

    (Edit: update at the bottom)
The thing to me is that there’s this weird clash where I can tell it’s supposed to be a youthful concept…..but they still make the girls behave and hold themselves in such a weird old-soul, “you’re so mature for your age” type way. I rewatched Attention recently and the way they look at the camera is deeply unsettling to me. And when I heard about the whole Lolita accusations about Min Heejin…yeah, I can see it. That’s exactly how the predatory narrator of Lolita views Dolores aka “Lolita.” He views her as “more mature” than her actual age and fetishized and sexualized her.
Some of the fashion in Attention is age appropriate-graphic tees and butterfly clips and jerseys and sundresses-but there are definitely pieces that are not, like the bandeau bras and one very mini skirt in the clothing store scene (edit: and the waist chains). We have to remember that these aren’t just teenage girls going through their own wardrobe and hanging out with their friends-these clothes were picked by adults, adults who knew that they’d be filming these girls to be at the very least aesthetically attractive in order to market them. (Edit: I’m okay with the 18 y/o’s wearing some more mature pieces, but they need to curb it for the younger girls)
And don’t even get me started on the opening scene of Attention. Yeah, they’re at a concert-but it so clearly was made to look like they’re out clubbing, like adults, not at a concert.
TXT also debuted with a youthful, relatable concept, but even though half of them were adults at debut, their concept was far more genuinely youthful than NewJeans, with poignant lyrics that focused on emotional connection, loneliness, feeling outcast, and then….okay they also have Cat & Dog but that’s more (loveable & iconic) cringe than noticeably sexualized. But NewJeans has Cookie. And I know people will defend that song to the ends of the world, but if a company wants to create a “global group” than they need to be aware of the implications of their lyrics, and if the members were all adults when this song came out and nothing changed about the lyrics, everyone would be calling it sexy. That’s just reality. Besides, why would they make a song for fans when there was no hype for them when the song was written? Most groups take at least a year after debut to release a song dedicated to fans.
I actually liked Attention; I really loved the style of the song. But I can’t rewatch the video because it makes me so uncomfortable. And I do like the idea of the natural hair and simple makeup look. I also think the marketing strategy of releasing the music video out of nowhere was genius especially from a HYBE group, since HYBE has such a dedicated following.
There just feels like *something* sus about how the concept is being handled. I’m so uneasy. I think it’s the way the camera “looks at” the girls and the way the girls have been directed (because they are being directed, let’s remember that-none of this is the girls’ fault) to look at the camera. Like, there’s a difference between looking at the camera in a “enigmatic” way or a “I’m pretty” way versus looking at the camera in a “mature” or “I’m such an old soul-I know a lot for my age” way. It feels…like how the narrator of Lolita thinks that Dolores is looking at him. It’s so uncomfortable to me.

@@something6510 exactly!! Gosh I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s getting this vibe. My theory right now is that HYBE genuinely wanted a global girl group with a relatable & youthful concept, but that Min Heejin’s control and direction has given it that underlying Lolita-ness, since she does have paraphernalia in her home that references Lolita and the fetishization of underage people. HYBE is still at fault for not reining her in or putting someone else in charge, but if Min Heejin has a certain idea of how youth “should be portrayed” and has certain “aesthetic” preferences (🤢) influenced by predatory works like Lolita, then that is 100% going to bleed through. It’s, again, very much the way the narrator in Lolita looks at Dolores-she’s a child but he “matures” her in his mind and fetishizes both her youth and his warped, perceived “more mature for her age”-ness that isn’t actually there, that’s he’s projecting onto her.

What's scary is that new jeans target audience is the next generation and it's working well, so many children that listen to kpop
have been saying that people are just jealous of their success and that there is nothing predatory about their songs like cookie.
It's so funny to me because when they're at that age where they think they know everything nothing will change their ignorance
They think everyone is jealous of them and that older kpop fans are bitter when really they're noticing the red flags that younger fans
were not around yet to spot.

    My experience with New Jeans:
I am subscribed to Hybe's RUclips Channel.
    Attention MV drops.
I like it put I do realize that The early 2000s aesthetic (which I am sick of at this point) will become even stronger in Kpop with this monster rookie.
I look them up on Kpop profil ("2004 is a bit young for an oldest member, but I guess Jungwon from Enhypen is also that age so its okay." "Another 2004" "2005, I can live with that" "2006, still younger than Leeseo from IVE" "2008!!! God, I thought we had moved on from such young debuts.)
Cookie MV drops and I am not happy about it.
I accept ador's explaination because it does seem reasonable to me.
And now, a few months later, I stan the girls. I don't ult them or anything, there many groups I would put above them in my stan list. They are funny, their varity show is fun and the songs are just Bops, there is no denying it. And I am weak, I act the way a companies wants me to act and not liking a popular Girlgroup isn't good for my mental health.

I think them dropping an my rather than introducing the members is way more strategic for the long run rather then normal. The reason I think this is because often especially in Korea propeller will prejudge a group based on looks rather then talent. By them dropping an mv people can listen to the music first and then get to know the group. It works better in the long run to bc it’s a right away yes or no rather then people expecting something and not getting what they want. Here ist just “Here is there music. All members are strictly dieting and will be for years, so all, but especially Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, will likely suffer from temporary or permanent infertility, osteoporosis, and brain shrinkage. Not to mention mental side effects (depression, anxiety) of having MILLIONS of eyes on you judging your body, and the pressure of being the Next Biggest Girl Group of the 4th gen. And of course sexual harassment, people already make porn of them and say disgusting things when they’ve barely been around for one month. I've been listening to kpop and jpop for about 15 or 16 years now, I've seen many many young artists/groups debut. Personally I didn't mind the ages too much and I did initially want to stay away from being a fan of girls nearly 10 years younger than me, but I ended up falling in love with them. They remind me of groups I loved growing up, and groups I always return to. I want to encourage them to do their best, and support them, but I don't want the toxicity of these industries to hurt them. Cookie made me uncomfortable, and reminds me a lot of groups like C-UTE, who I loved growing up, but those girls were young, some of them a little bit older than me when I discovered them at 11 years old. They also had many uncomfortable songs and concepts, I noticed it then as well, but I hope that the girls don't end up going down that route any further. Also regarding Cookie I think part of the problem is that two of the girls are fairly older, and it isn't all that wild of a song for an 18 year old in my opinion but when the youngest member is 14 the ages of ALL members needs to be considered. I don't know many 18 year olds who haven't considered or engaged in risque acts, but I don't think that song is appropriate for younger members, and I think that was an oversight on the company and team.

i think the thing is it is a “youthful” concept, but it’s youthful as in early 20s/late teens. it feels a lil weird to watch them go clubbing and partying in attention, and even worse how in hype boy their crushes/love interests are all pretty obviously adults or at least much older than them. i hate how they don’t treat them their age. cookie would be called a sexy concept if it was made by any other group, and they’d probably even get hate like black pink got for ice cream even if they were grown

Getting into the industry at such a young age is already damaging a person's ability to grow mentally healthy. Sexualization takes it ten steps further. I firmly believe minors should never debut, regardless of concepts bc the power dynamics between them and all the people they deal with is so unhealthy. Successful idols like Jungkook and Hyuna who started as minors and are now grown have talked about how the industry took their youth from them.

I love the playful, youthful and somewhat childish but well-meaning concept. The girls are amazing singers and dancers at such a young age. Their sp is outstanding as well. We can forget about cookie but their discography is one of the best things that happened in kpop. They have a dozen Raks and different awards, they're already ambassadors for luxury brands. Aside from Izone, Newjeans would've dominated the 4th gen if they debuted earlier. They would've sweep mama if they debuted earlier. The only thing that's getting me is the ages. Mhj is a huge creep and she should've let at least 2 20+ members in the group because this is so creepy. Especially cookie. But anyway, their songs are all hits and are dominating and breaking the charts. I super love the members too they aren't boring. They may be simple but you can tell they have personalities. Kpop groups don't necessarily have to be crackheads. Maybe because they're young, but the members' personalities are so genuine top tier. Especially Minji and Hanni. It'll takr Haerin a little bit ti break out of her shell but she's not boring. One of the best groups that debuted. They probably have the best debut among 4th gen. People love them. Their debut was a hit, the concept, the vibe, the refreshing feeling of everything. They aren’t making trends, they are simply shining the main reason the trend was made and popular. They came out of nowhere which I loved and immediately staned right away. Currently while they were growing, I was streaming Talk That Talk. I like how the stuff they make isn’t new, the y2k, the songs are new though. I mean that, their concept is unique yet their is still some min heejin crumbs to it, a vibe that has f(x) and rv has, cause again, Min Heejin worked with those groups. Their group isn’t new and what I meant by that is that the base of it isn’t new at all.
Imagine the K-pop field as a soccer field and the groups are players. Other groups play the field as normal soccer, making up new techniques to score a goal (successful cb) but New Jeans, as a player they use what I like to call “Spacial Awareness” so as the other players play and use various techniques; New Jeans uses the players instead. Making the players pass the ball right to them intending to score. A steal you would say. I’m not saying their stealing, I’m saying, that they use the player’s signatures and alter it into their own concept that is y2k. They are making their own technique by capturing and bettering the other techniques of the other players. So the chorus that is of Attention, it feels like Lilac by IU doesn’t it? So they made IU’s famous “signature technique” that is a fun long breeze melody and turned it into their own y2k concept. People already loved IU, and her songs are a spring breeze vibe, so New Jeans added that part into their chorus. There’s more.
Hype Boy, a song that fights back. The chorus. The “Your my-y-y-y chemical hype boy” is kind of similar to Royal, having a repetitive melody when it comes to the chorus. The “ Let you know you know you know” is repeating just like the “My-y-y-y chemical hype boy”. New jeans turned that into their y2k concept, using their Spacial Awareness and altering it so the girls’ voice can be used to the fullest extent. So that’s what I’m talking about them. It isn’t new cause of that, but it is new cause they are refining it to fit their concept which is another field and then using the girls’ main weapon to its fullest extent. Another metaphor for New Jeans is a oven or a smith. They take the raw and uncooked materials and they refine or make it into whatever they want. That’s why their so successful. I love them for this! As a proud bunny I love how the girls’ have great personality and coexist with each other. A great and solid group and having a potential that I and others could never imagine, the limit for this group is space itself. I hope to grow along with them and I will cheer for them. I get how people are with Min Hee-Jin also, which is a meh for me. I see people criticizing New Jeans do similar concepts form F(x) and Red Velvet. But I think netizens need to know that Min Hee-Jin has made that group! Made their most popular comebacks, their concepts are imprinted by Min Hee-Jin. Min Hee-Jin leaves crumbs of her concept. She is a great leader in entertainment but as a person, I have not made up my mind yet. So far, I think New Jeans is in safe hands.
Now, for cookie, as we are of internationalist fans, we don’t have the full knowledge of Cookie’s metaphorical message, Ador is kind of sketchy for doing this, which sucks cause ima give you guys a video that explains it in a POV of a Korean native. Again, Ador should’ve heavily included the CD as in the MV only the cookie and CD popped in. Here is the video: ruclips.net/user/shortsnfNPXx-6gL8?feature=share
Now, I thank you for reading this. As you know, people have their own opinions, but please keep in mind that there are different cultures and different language inside meanings. Again, we are in a world that media shares everything so Ador knows, but they really don’t care about international media, yes, I know, they care in some way but in the end, charts in Korea matters more. Korea looks into other country medias, but majority of Koreans only look and care for their own media. So in the end it’s how you perceive the world. New Jeans is group you and everyone should be scared. Who cares if they just debuted, they made your fandom feel intimidated, they made your favs have favs, which is them. New Jeans is here to take the crown.

All the girls in girls generation were teenagers… they just looked way older than they actually were… we were just younger. Their age matches their target audience, I don’t see a problem. Just like I stan blackpink, blackpink is around my age lok

There are no allegations about MHJ, just a bunch of lies that people didn't bother looking for the sources lmao. Because if they did, they would see that basically none of the things a random person on the internet started saying about MHJ is true. I honestly don't care about her *personal* taste for art because it's art. I like plenty of fucked up stuff and this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I'm teacher. Did people read her first interview talking about NewJeans? Or did people read two sentences out of context and jumped on the whole "MHJ is a p* creepy" train? Did people bother looking for the info on some of the pictures she has on her house? Seriously... And yeah, it's fine to criticize minors debuting in K-Pop but is it anything new? Krystal and Sulli were 14 when they debuted, and both Luna and Amber were still minors as well. Like, it happened several times and it will keep happening (unfortunately I guess?). And honestly many people have an incredible hard time looking at women without sexualizing them, they don't know what to do when they are not supposed to do it lmao. Every video about NewJeans I've seen so far that decides to "talk" about MHJ always has the same bunch of misinformation... Very disappointing and yet not surprising at all.

Honestly guys I'm sorry I'm not hating them but these younger girls are so beautiful and charming and I have a younger sister she is 17 and she totally cried when newjeans debuted because she also wanted to be k pop idol but we aren't allowed to her
Now she is crys sometimes and also told me she feels not good about herself she also wants to be pretty like these girls even sometimes she wants to kill her self
She is totally unstable 💔I'm so worried about her
And also these younger girls they have a future but these ages like 17,14 ,18 aren't for kpop idols they are so young 🙏
It's to earlier for them 🙏💔💔💔

Let your sister follow her dreams otherwise she might become worse. Every job has its disadvantages and I get why you might not want her to be an idol because she's young, but if you prevent her from reaching her dreams she will become depressed.
