- Rainbow darters are one of the most beautiful freshwater fishes! They can be found throughout the Great Lakes and Mississippi River. Do you know how males determine which guy gets the girl? Watch the video to find out!
These males were filmed near shore in about one foot of water. We typically see rainbow darters in fast-flowing rivers rather than inland ponds. But it never hurts to stop and look around. It's amazing what you see!

Stunning! Do you have any idea if they will go through spawning phases if kept in a large home aquarium? Most videos display rather drab-looking specimens.
They're definitely a bit drabber in the "off-season" lol. We don't know how they'd handle captivity, sorry.

Incredible! Only seen them a handful of times in port Huron. Any tips for finding them? Are they more active at different at times of year
We see them most often in the summer. We've seen them in 60ft under the Blue Water Bridges but this was shot in about 3 foot up by the shore. They seem to prefer rocky shorelines, like by the old YMCA. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

I just got farm-raised juvenile rainbow darters (about 2" long). My research says to feed them freeze-dried bloodworms, but I'm not convinced that is the best choice. Any suggestions you can give would be great! Thank you!
Sorry, @leyenda61 we know nothing about raising fish. We do all our filming in the wild!
