Rainbow Shiner River Island Aquascape (Low Tech)

- In this one, I design an island aquascape for arguably one of the most beautiful freshwater fish species, the Rainbow Shiner! I've had these fish for at least five months. They were really small and I wasn't quite sure what type of tank I wanted to make for them, so I took my time.
As I thought through things, I thought that a minimal design, like this one, would be pretty cool. After all, was said and done, it appears that the fish really like it as well.
Enjoy the build and let me know what you think down in the comments!

I've had these fish for so long now and couldn't wait any longer to do this build! I really like how it turned out and I love these fish. What do you think? Let me know! 👇 Have a great weekend SerpaSquad!
I turned out great ! Almost at 1mil btw, awesome!
I think they are very cool, also the tank.can you maybe get some centipedes? This would be a great Thing in the animal room
I love it!
i dont think you shoud add corys, the corys might struggle to find food with such food crazy fishes living in the top layers.
So close to one million subs!! Congratulations!
Having had danios before, I would highly recommend putting a lid of some sort on the tank as they are very high energy and will not hesitate to jump out. Best of luck!
i second this! i lost about 6 giant danios from jumping out, im glad the ones that were left mated to fill the tank back up again, because it's hard to find giants around here!
I literally lost two out of 3 last week, i put them in a bowl while i redoing the tank.. by the time i was finished two dissappeared and i still havent found them too this day 😔
@@jayparker96 I'm sorry to hear that😞
I personally never had that problem I’ve been keeping danios for years
@@torrinsusterich9938 It also probably has to do with the kind of danios you have; I probably should've mentioned that I've been keeping giant danios which are very high energy. I'm curious to know about other species as well.
I have a creek system near my house where I'll go to watch the rainbow shiners in their native environment. It's awesome to see how they live throughout the year. In spring their colors get so vibrant and full! Deep bright reds and iridescence. They tend to congregate around stone roller and chubb nests where they lay their eggs. Truly beautiful fish
Do they lose colour after breeding?
God bless you and God bless anyone reading this! Hope you have an awesome day! Seek him while you can! Jesus is the way and the only way and he is returning soon! Whenever you think you aren't loved... Remember the ultimate sacrifice was for love! ENDING YOUR LIFE IS NEVER THE ANSWER!
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 KJV
The wages of sin is death (hell) but Jesus paid our debt on the cross, for our salvation! We must turn to God and away from our sinful ways, Confess Jesus is Lord and believe with our hearts that he was risen from the dead by God, and we must be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit and live by His word and Commandments! Trust that God will help with the rest!
Seek God today before it's too late! Today could be your last day on earth!
Have a blessed day!

@@lopezfam7317 why are you proselytizing in the youtube comment section?
Koolie loaches! Everyone has cory’s but you hardly ever see people with koolies! The piece of wood totally makes the scape especially with it sticking out of the water. I’m really excited for the update!
I love how clean and peaceful this tank looks, and your choice of livestock really accentuates that!
i love the scape! it doesnt feel to cramped as you have a huge open space and the crowded right side still lets the fish hide!
Just subbed 5 mintues ago, after watching 10'ish videos in a row. How fitting! 🐸
gamloph!
Yeah that is basically how I ended up subbing a while back😉
Tanner is a master of his craft, isn't he?
Lol I’ve done that before 😂
Homie Get ready for the most calming and lovely videos that will educate you on every type of animal enclosures.... girl buckle your seatbelt.
I felt like he did really well with using the negative space and using the rule of thirds. It can be easy to take negative space for granted because it's tempting to load the tank up with cool plants and hardscape, but it created really neat tension like he said. And the gradual slope and rock size to the right leads the eye to the log at the right third. Simple and really impressive!
Hey Tanner this has nothign To do with this video but just wanted To tell you that it would be realy cool if you did a vidéo on the importance of protecting all the natural habitats we love. I know how much you care for wild life, so you could show us tips and tricks on how help it out pepole will l'isent To you
Thank you for the amazing video as always
Yes!
Would love to see more videos of the established tanks. It's neat to see them assembled, but so few of your videos show how they stand the test of time, which is just as important for people deciding how to build a tank. Especially if they only have room for one or two.
Love your setups as always though!
💞
@@leggi_bois4eva oh hai ;D
A larger group of gobies is always a good idea. They have a really fascinating social structure and they're just really fun to watch.
danios were the very first fish i ever got, they're still one of my favorites
That stump is perfect, and so is the tank as a whole.
I’d watch this tank for hours. Love the design.
Definitely one of my favorite tanks you've done! Love how the fish inhabitants are generally similarly colored, and how the snails match the landscape. And that's not even going into your plant choice and creativity in using negative space!!
Modest stream tank design that mimics the wood/rockpiles and gravelly/sandy gaps of a natural stream/lake perfectly! I wouldn't put too many fish in it even with all that apparent room. Simple works here.
Kuhli loaches for the bottom and pseudomugil rainbows for the top! That's my vote. Hatchets like really calm water. Bump the flow up and maybe some hillstream loaches who would love to feed on the aufwuchs growing on the rocks. Great scape and video, Tanner.
This is definitely one of my favs. I love your choice of fish and plants, and the style of the tank (nice and open) gives everyone room to breathe and grow. Can't wait to see it a couple of months from now!
Big fan of the khuli loach/hatchet combo!
Favorite piece in awhile. That ship one is looking real good on the shelf above too.
I really like this....most times you see THE SAME THING in aquariums so it's good to see a distinct, different look
Can't believe you're almost at 1 mil man.. time flies .. but also no one deserves it more !!!
I think it could cool to add some larger floating plants on the left like some water lettuce or water hyacinth. Something with some larger roots, that would help a lot with absorbing waste
I love the idea of tall on one side, short on the other. The fish have the best of both worlds.
I can't remember if I mentioned an idea I have for a scape. Under the pier. With pilings and plants. It could be a fresh water pier. I love the idea of the pilings and the creatures who inhabit that area of a lake/pond.
The aquarium at the museum of natural science in Jackson, MS has a pretty neat set up like you’re describing.
I've been looking at different tiny fish for a 55 gallon aquarium I have collecting dust. Pea puffers are top of my list so far. I'm not 100% decided though. The rainbow shiners are a fish I haven't seen, til now. They're definitely in the top 5 now!!! The scaping you did here is almost exactly the look I picture for the tank I want to set up.
Love the idea of a lush and complex scape with just pea puffers, and some nano fish to fill in the top of the tank.
Yesssss a native aqaurium ive been watching and waiting since the last
I would suggest for extra bottom dwelling livestock that you get freshwater fully aquatic dwarf crabs! I think it would make an excellent addition by balancing the three tiers of animal activity in the tank!
Love your work!
Heck Yeah Serpa!!!!!! Congrats on 1 Million!!!!
Simple is sometimes all you need. Looks great!
Great job placing the rocks around the stump. It looks very natural. I like the look of the tank.
I love this design! The negative space is great to highlight the movement of the fish against the frosted back. Great job!!
Those Rainbow Gobies looked wicked...great work as always! Cheers!
Kinda reminds me of my 40 gallon goldfish tank! Except most of the plants are tough rascals like anubias. My ryukin Starchild is so much happier in there than in his old 20 gallon. Getting him a buddy soon!
This tank came out really beautiful. Very peaceful.
You study colors beautifully I really want to see what kind of amazing landscapes you're going to make 15 years later
I love it and I can see In the future what's it's going to look like as it grows and it's going to be beautiful!!! Can't wait to see it then and see the fish in there ....great job TANNER!!!
I think khuli loaches, a small group of corys, and maybe a reticulated hillstream loach would go great in this tank. And I know you've already got snails in there, but I think a rabbit snail would be a cool addition!
I like all the open space and it appears the fish do as well.
The iwagumi with moss growing on a rock technique, takes a short time if you overfeed the tank. It lets the nutrients accumulate until biofilm forms on the rocks or whatever surface the moss will grow on. The more neglect and abuse the tank gets the more the plants thrive. I have "tolerant" fish and shrimp that can withstand the "neglect" the moss may need to allow it to envelop the hardscape.
Minimalist tanks have their place too! And honestly you should do progression updates with older tanks so we can see growth (or changes if things go wrong) and see the 3-5 month established tanks!! Personally I wouldn't stock any other creatures in here since you got a good mix of inverts and mid water filled. Maybe another goby if they actually prefer friends.
I love this minimal look. Probably one of my favourites.
This is my favourite tank. Beautiful, simple, elegant!! 👏
As you are the moss god, i would have added a little patch of moss on the top of the wood, slightly touching the water. It would have look like a signature ^^
Going to be rescaping my 10 gallon. This helped a lot! Thanks
This is one of those things that’s so cool it makes me sick, but like in a good way
I really like this tank! I could sit and watch that for hours and hours. Stunning!
Wow you did great on this one, don’t really know why but it’s my favorite of all the tanks I’ve seen you do. The fish are perfect.
Looks great, nature isn't always symmetrical! I love that there is free space and that you didn't cover ALL the sand. And it will look better when the plants on the left grow.
Given the fish species featured in this set up come from a more subtropical/temperate climate, I think hillstream loach would be a great alternative to the more usual bottom dwelling fishes
Great idea! Wouldn't mess up the substrate like cories
Was just coming here to say a Hillstream loach 😊
Absolutely love river rocks and drift wood. Beautiful scape
as usual , Tanner, you hit the ball out of the park !!!!!!! :D
Another masterpiece.. I love fish tanks, they are like a living piece of art work in your home. ❤️❤️
You're so close to 1 million subscribers! I hope you get it soon, you deserve it!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!! SERPA ON 1 MILLION!!!!!!
Nootropis chrosomus is the second kind of fish I got. It was for a pond I built on my balcony this year. They are beautiful and very lively fishes. The blue and purple they had this summer was indeed beautiful. Have fun watching them ! 😊 And thank you so much for your channel and everything you do 😁
Definitely one of my favorite of your scapes
Rainbow shiners are such awesome fish! They will color up brilliantly when they get a bit bigger, especially in breeding season. They might even breed with all these rocks/pebbles. I've got them in an outside pond, they're really cold resistent too!
This looks simple but still so good! no doubt that everything that you build will always look amazing!
Ikr if I would've died I would want to live in this tank
corys LOVE sand !! theyd be so so cute snuffling around for tidbits :D
Really like the setup! Would love to see Kuhli Loaches and maybe a little dedicated video on them? I’ve kept them in my personal tank for over 3 years now, and they’re really cool!
I liked the before look, but the finished design is amazing!
I love this aquascape! I'm always impressed by your beautiful creations, you should consider having livestreams of some of your tanks on your website!
Love the build Tanner, the Dobbie is really a nice touch to the minimal aesthetic build and busy fish zipping by. Albino tiger barbs would look nice
Nice another aquascape! Now shh for the next 10min 😅
I love this tank I feel like aquatic frogs would thrive in this environment
If you add hatchetfish, you'll need to add a very very tight fitting cover. No gaps at all! Those guys jump all the time, and they will jump out of the tank in the first week if you don't take precautions.
I'm preparing to create my first freshwater aquascape for a betta I was not prepared for. After watching this, I think I'll try going above the rim. Maybe I'll take some inspiration from the betta paludarium build as well.
Wow congrats on reaching 1 mill 🥳🥳🥳
Love the duality theme here
Love that you included your thinking processes along the way. That corner sticker logo was a nice touch. I love my Cories they’re high energy.
I absolutely love this tank and the overall design. I was also looking for cool water set-ups and combos and this is it. You truly are are a master in fishtank scaping and design. Thanks for uploading all those different videos.
Absolutely fabulous.. ❤️❤️👌👌
9:46 I also live in the US, and have a native tank set up. By far my favorite fish in there are my darters, that are bottom dwellers and packed with energy. You could probably find a native species online to stock this tank with. They're super personable fish and I love mine. Also they're great community fish, they're not aggressive, but they do eat snails.
they eat only smaller snails like bladder snails right?
@@jonisolis9645 yeah, I don't think they're able to eat anything much bigger. mine are restricting the amount of bladder snails in the tank heavily. they don't seem to be super picky eaters tho, I have mine eating blooworms with no problems
@@Dingusaurus12 Thank you for this fast reply. Good to know that some smaller fish do eat snails. Thanks.
@@jonisolis9645 no problem, glad to help someone out and spread the knowledge of a fantastic and widely unheard-of fish
I normally don't reply to others' comments or comment much myself but I just got a little darter that accidentally came in with some feeder shrimp at our LFS and was wondering if they'd take to frozen food so I'd love to know how long that took or if it they were already on a frozen diet since I can't say if the one I have is wild or tank bred but suspect possibly wild. Good to know though if they generally do prefer eating snails, the ramshorns breed like crazy and I won't own puffers since they're known to eat their tankmates and I own a few minnows as pets
This is my perfect tank!! I love the river scape, just absolutely perfection!!
Wish I had the room for a massive tank as this is what I would aim for
I love the clean look. It does look like a river bank. Great job as always.
Another great video as always! They might be harder to find, but panda loaches would look really good in that scape.
This is a dream scape for me. I would love to get my hands on rainbow shiners
Really hope you can add more native fish to your collection! Darters, chubs and pygmy sunfish are all really cool animals!
This is stunning. Im using the colours of rocks & sand as inspiration in a old tank I’m refurbishing. Thank you!❤️🇦🇺
I know you post once a week....and I still check several times a week! LOL. Let me turn on the bell :D
Ohhh! I really want to keep this someday, they're beautiful!
Damn dude, you're truly making art.
I love this build, and I love the fish in it. Keeping it very natural and simple. I really enjoy these types of builds as they seem so open and natural.
Also a little sidenote. DAMN the boat build looks SO awesome as the plants have grown in more now
I love this look and especially the two species hanging out together. 😍
i would add kuhli loaches, they are honestly way underrated fish, i have a few and they are so fun to watch
Love this scape! Maybe adding a group of the long fin WCCM from Rachel O'leary would be a great addition and possibly a few more Dwarf Goby's or Hillstream laches!
Love this suggestion!!
I bet Rachel would love this tank.
and big time second this comment
I really love how relaxing these videos are but I also really love the aesthetic of his designs. That if gorgeous.
I really like this design... sitting at the edge of the ocean.
This is my favorite aquascape you have done so far. The balance is gorgeous and I love the animals and plants you chose. ❤️👍
I love it! I love how clean the scape looks!
I love love love this design, and I'm a big fan of native species, so the shiners are perfect. Beautiful work!! Of course, I haven't seen one of yours that wasn't, but this one really stands it as one I can see myself doing. 💕
Your patience is amazing
I LOVE this scape!!! Huuuge fan of river-type layouts, and the dense vs minimalist look is just so beautiful
Thank you for sharing your wonderful hobby! You clearly enjoy making these beautiful tanks and we enjoy watching the process 🙂
It looks awesome. Love your work Tanner
Rewatching this again for inspiration definitely adds another level of appreciation for the details. I'm in the process of building a riverbed inspired look so this definitely helps ☺️
Sunken ship looks great on that shelf
kuhli loaches are my all time favorite freshwater fish!!! They aren't super popular, so I tell people about them often. If you put some in your tank that would probably greatly impact their popularity and make them known to so many more people 🥺i mean they arent hard to find fish at all, i just think they are totally underrated. people say they are nocturnal, but with enough hiding places they will feel safe enough to come out during the day too!
Khuli loaches! Hillstream loaches! All the loaches! (except the ones that may eat your snails!) Glass catfish would look super cool too if they'd get along. However emerald corys would look good with the rainbows.
that goby is adorable! also the pirate ship is looking great :)
What a beautiful setup! The simplicity really is so refreshing, and displays the fish to perfection.
Cory's would look perfect in this scape
