The Interview Movie Description:
The Interview is a 2014 black comedy-action political satire film produced and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in their second directorial work, following This Is the End (2013). The screenplay was written by Dan Sterling, based on a story he co-wrote with Rogen and Goldberg. The film stars Rogen and James Franco as journalists who set up an interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (Randall Park), and are then recruited by the CIA to assassinate him. The film is inspired by a 2012 Vice documentary.
Rogen and Goldberg developed the idea for The Interview in the late 2000s, with Kim Jong Il as the original assassination target. In 2011, after Kim Jong Il's death and Kim Jong Un's succession as the North Korean leader, Rogen and Goldberg redeveloped the script with the focus on Kim Jong Un's character. The Interview was first announced in March 2013, at the beginning of pre-production. Principal photography was in Vancouver from October to December 2013. The film was produced by Columbia Pictures, LStar Capital and Rogen and Goldberg's Point Grey Pictures, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
In June 2014, the North Korean government threatened action against the United States if Sony released the film. As a result, Sony delayed the release from October to December and reportedly re-edited the film to make it more acceptable to North Korea. In November, the computer systems of Sony were hacked by the "Guardians of Peace", a cybercrime group which may be connected with the North Korean government. The group also threatened terrorist attacks against theaters showing the film. This led to major theater chains opting not to release the film, and Sony instead releasing it for online digital rental and purchase on December 25, 2014, followed by a limited release at selected theaters the next day.
In December 2014, South Korean singer Yoon Mi-rae revealed that the film used her song "Pay Day" without permission, and that she was taking legal action. Yoon Mi-rae and her label Feel Ghood Music reached a settlement with Sony Pictures Entertainment on May 13, 2015.
The Interview grossed $40 million in digital rentals, making it Sony's most successful digital release and earned an additional $12.3 million worldwide in box office ticket sales on a $44 million budget. It received mixed reviews for its humor and subject matter, although a few critics praised the performances of Rogen, Franco, Park and Diana Bang.

FYI, it made so little because it barely had a theater release (because NK hackers were threatening all of the major theater chains, so all of the big ones opted not to run it), and by the time it came it out tons of people had already seen it because hackers hacked Sony and leaked it online like a month before it's premiere. Links to sites streaming it were all over social media.

Hackers didn't leak the movie, Sony released it as a free stream for a limited time, and regular people just downloaded the stream and put it up on filesharing networks.
@@Enrique-Garcia No they didn't, they released it for VOD rental and purchase a day before the scheduled wide release because it was already leaked (whereas normally movies aren't released on VOD until after a movie's theater run). I just googled the timeline to be sure; it leaked online on November 24th with the rest of the Sony server/email leaks, and it wasn't officially released on VOD by Sony until December 24th, with a very limited theater release on Christmas.
It was leaked online exactly a month before Sony's release. If I remember correctly, the copy that leaked still had watermarks, so when Sony released their copy that was really all that changed.

The Eminem bit is one of the funniest bits in recent history.

This film and the Sony hack that came with it literally made Sony come back to the table with a deal to Marvel for Spider-Man to appear in Civil War. So, this is surprisingly a landmark film in Hollywood.

When I first saw this movie on Netflix, I didn't know this was a comedy, and I was laughing so hard as I was watching it.

Fun fact: this movie was so controversial that it almost started ww3. The only prevention from that happening was that it was banned in North Korea
All Western films are banned in North Korea. There was never any risk for conflict as a result of this film.
That's not even close to being accurate or a "fun fact" at all considering NK threatens the West with "WW3" pretty much every other month. Kim Jung Un knows his entire country would get obliterated before his rinky-dink nukes even reached their target. Then you also have what @slowprodigy said.
