Hey Simon, please, please, please do a Casual Criminalist video on James Mitchell "Mike" DeBardeleben. The other day you mentioned that the Secret Service in the US is responsible for investigating money counterfeiting crimes on the Casual Criminalist, which made me think of DeBardeleben. He was a prolific counterfeiter, so much so that the Secret Service gave him a nickname: "the mall passer". When they finally caught and arrested him, the Secret Service agents found a lot more than counterfeit money. Together with the FBI he was charged with a whole litany of crimes (he wasn't even prosecuted for most of them). He was sent to prison for life and the agents who investigated him said that he committed just about every felony on the books.
Anyone interested in the story should read Stephen Michaud's book "Beyond Cruel" which is the definitive resource (that I've found anyway) on DeBardeleben. The audiobook is good too.
George once again going above and beyond with the research! As someone who is in college right now (and thus does a lot of academic research), I really appreciate it!
I highly recommend you do the monster with 21 faces. It was a long lasting terror campaign against Japan's candy companies which included kidnapping, arson and even poisoning. It's an insanely intriguing mystery
Great episode Simon. I do really enjoy George’s episodes. He is so thorough. It makes me feel like we are getting more an investigative report than just a retelling of a story.
It's a good feeling to have been binging this guy's videos for the entire morning, and ending one video to find he put out a new one. Gosh, I love this channel.
Another great one! Regarding the morality of robberies: I had a neighbour who worked at a bank. She experienced 3 robberies over the years and it left her with deep mental scars. She has PTSD, random panic attacks and can’t work anymore (early retirement). So, I think let’s not forget about the van drivers when thinking in terms of “how bad is it to steal money that is surely insured”. However, I’m totally against the death penalty. That guy was a criminal and his crimes should not be taken lightly but I don’t think he deserved the firing squad. Being locked away for a really long time without his family, friends and luxury should’ve been punishment enough in my opinion.
I'm generally against the death penalty, the exception being cases of extremely brutal or just completely horrific murders where the evidence leaves no doubt. However, he knew the laws of his country and decided to commit the crimes anyway. And he didn't just nab a couple of folks and ransom them- he tortured the one guy and with an arsenal that included 1000 kg of explosives with 2000 detonators, grenades, guns and thousands of rounds of ammo, he definitely had plans that included harming and killing a good number of people. You don't stock up with explosives and grenades to ransom a few people. I'm guessing that if he'd been able to go through with whatever plan he had, it would be an attack with a high number of casualties that would have been worldwide news, something remembered well for a long time around the world. So I can't say I have much sympathy.
George always goes above and beyond in his research. The last one I heard by him the level of active perusing real people for information is so sadly refreshing and new. Can he please open a school for journalism in America in which everyone in the media is required to take and pass? Petition to make this law. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you, George, for creating another fascinating piece! I sincerely appreciate all the effort you put into each of your episodes/stories/scripts (I just cannot think of the best way to reference them and my brain isn't functioning so well, anymore; my sincerest apologies.) as they provide a much deeper understanding into the history, language, lifestyle, and culture of Hong Kong and mainland China, around and where these events take place. I appreciate all of your notes, too, because understanding the reasons behind the details (like the two versions for sounding out Mandarin Chinese, which has long confused and confounded me) are just as interesting to me as the main story. 💚
Without talking down on all the other writers, whose stories I still really enjoy, George is something else man. I almost want to here more about his wierd life then the crimes

That case always blows my mind; it has elements of magic that we all know Simon would "love" but also the whole operation only came crashing down after an American student was murdered... despite loads of locals being victims too, which is really troubling.
Great writing again from George on this one, but I also wanted to give him props for his expertise on firearms. As someone who knows firearms, I can absolutely tell that George is a man of similar ilk. George, I don’t know if you’re a gamer, but if you are any haven’t already played Escape from Tarkov, then you will greatly appreciate their attention to detail when it comes to firearms. For anyone unfamiliar with it, EFT is quite literally the most accurate firearm simulation that has ever existed and it’s insanely addictive to anyone that happens to be a gun geek and fan of first-person shooters. Keep up the good work George, I can’t wait for the next one, including that little aside about Cantonese you promised!
Remington model 870 is one of the best basic shotgun platforms to ever be built. There's one for sale used at a pawn shop down the street for 275 American dollars. You can get a new one with 2 barrels, 2 chokes, and a plug for 3 to 4 hundred dollars. I've met up with friends for bird hunting trips and found that more than half of us had 870s. One of the best basic shotguns ever. Yes, they could buy many many 870s with their money.
I enjoyed another great video! I also think it's great that you have different nationalities doing different stories, it means we get more multinational crimes and because of it they are often more unknown crimes, and then they also tend to have a lot more interesting facts because of the local interest! Definitely keep up all the good work!
Can you please do the Palme murder? It’s an interesting case with some wild twists and turns. I would love to see Simons take on it. A couple other good Swedish cases for the show: The Knutby case, murder and drama within a sect. The laser man, a racist serial killer.
The Palme case would just be one hour of Simon calling the cops idiots. The Knutby case could be more interesting, particularly since everything points towards the first wife was also murdered by Fosmos but in that case by himself and not by proxy but it was never proven. And Lasermannen was a serial killer, those are always popular. Whoever wrote the script about the Bodom case seems competent enough to wrote those, but the Palme case is just frustrating.
@@loke6664 What other interesting cases do we have here in Sweden? The Stureplan massacre? Hagamannen, not murders but still a very chilling case. A good Swedish heist is ofc The Arlanda heist. Got any more?
@@timbackman5915 Anders Lindbäck, John Ingvar Lövgren, Hans Marmbo and Hilda Nilsson. All serial killers and not that often talked about today but interesting cases. 3 of them killed early to mid 20th century, Hilda in the late 19th.
Thanks George. I love your episodes. They are so well researched & detailed. Fascinating look into places I won't get to go. Also, it's funny to watch Simon try to pronounce names from China/Hong Kong. The notes & asides are awesome too
Can you guys do an episode on Nancy Crampton-Brophy? She’s a romance writer on trial for killing her husband. She wrote a blog post called “How to Murder Your Husband.”
For this lifelong Wisconsinite, I’ve not only owned a few, but would like to leave my pronunciation for Simon say it Knee san. Also for the writers, whatever the channel, consider this one… yesterday I watched a Forensic Files from 2007 titled Bitter Brew about the kidnapping of Coors chairman Adolph Coors. ❤️ this and all your channels!
As an attorney, I can tell you that a fair amount of criminal cases are based on circumstantial evidence. Not all cases have direct evidence like eyewitnesses or video. At least that's how it works in the US
I think laypeople don’t know the actual definition of circumstantialevidence, and if told are surprised it includes forensics like dna, fibers, blood, etc. and that what we now know to be less reliable (eyewitness testimony) comprises non circumstantial evidence besides cc camera, wiretaps, etc.A circumstantial case isn’t necessarily a weak one, as “popular wisdom” holds.
I've been binging a lot of the Casual Crim videos I've missed. Simon's sometimes near constant quips and tangents have been driving me mad up until I came to a conclusion. They're a defence mechanism to break the tension over what he's reading. Sometimes it's a funny snark commentary when the story involves heists/kidnappings, but you can really see it in the disturbing topic vids. It's like his brain won't let him go a few minutes without trying to joke and laugh because of what it knows he's talking about. Sorry for the pop-psychology, Simon, but this insight (if I'm right) has actually allowed me to not get so frustrated when your interuptions/tangents start building up in a video.
I think fans of his sometimes long and many tangents are a very large part of his fan base. But I can see how they're sometimes nerve wracking. I find tiring how sheltered and moneyed his sides are sometimes...
@@laurabustos6560 It's the sheer volume of them that I find exhausting. There are times when he barely gets through two sentences before he's off on another ramble. I think if I'm wrong about them being a defense mechanism, then I think he's fallen into a trap of playing up the rambles as a character role because it's something he started and the fanbase enjoyed.
@@morlath4767 I think, whether you're right in whole, you're definitely right in that he plays it up. For example in this video he pauses before "guessing" an amount, "about 20 million" ( I forget if it was in regards to a bail amount or money that was stolen etc.) Then immediately reads the script which says the amount was 18 million. Well, he has a hundred percent said in previous shows that he's always taking a line or two ahead... Therefore, how did he "guess" something so close to the actual amount supposedly while taking a pause in the reading? I tell you "dear viewer" that I have overused quotation marks in this comment, AND that Simon had already read the amount of minutes and was just playing up this aside "guess"! 👏🤣👏
@@morlath4767 I do think you're also right in your pop psych theory on why he initially did the tangent/ ramble/ aside business to begin with though. I think it would be very hard to deal with some of these scripts. The hello kitty murders come to mind as a recent one that was just mind breaking.
@@laurabustos6560 Agreed. And when he's breaking scripts up once it starts to reach the horrorible stuff, then it's a great mood breaker. A way of decompressing for both himself and us so we don't get overwhelmed by the horrors he's talking about. I just wish the pre/non horror rambles were cut back on. Having videos where he starts with a ramble and just keeps going on them when the topic is more benign drives me nuts. I keep getting tempted to find a random selection of Casual Criminist videos and working out how much run time are him going off topic.
32:53 Simon, buying a shotgun leaves a paper trail straight back to you if they are found after committing a robbery and you lose it. Using stolen shotguns leaves no such trail
One other thing I have heard if you're trapped in a trunk is to kick in one or both tail lights and start waving like crazy or making as much motion as possible out of the hole to alert other drivers.
Love your work George, keep em coming. Simon, you're one of my favourite youtubers, I've subbed to literally all your channels. Please, for the love of beer, take some Chinese/Cantonese pronunciation lessons 😆
A few questions for George. 1 - Is George a Professional Chinese true crime writer? (outside the Casual Criminalist). His stories are incredibly detailed and the research he does is quite impeccable! 2 - What does 'Deprivation of Political Rights' mean in China? Does it mean you're not allowed to run in party elections or something? 3 - How is this dude allowed to buy guns period? Especially automatic weapons!? AK's to be exact? Aren't guns stupid illegal in China and Hong Kong? Isn't possession alone a guaranteed 10 year sentence??? How???
Wow, him asking for financial advice was absolutely the last thing I was expecting. The kidnapper either has balls of steel or he doesn't really understand how people respond when confronted by the people who kidnapped their child asking for advice on using their ill gotten gains.

I also think it's great that you have different nationalities doing different stories, it means we get more multinational crimes and because of it they are often more unknown crimes, and then they also tend to have a lot more interesting facts because of the local interest!
Definitely keep up all the good work!
I LOVED all the facts and the huge amount of research George had to do. 👏👏👏👏
Can you please do the Palme murder? It’s an interesting case with some wild twists and turns.
I would love to see Simons take on it.
A couple other good Swedish cases for the show:
The Knutby case, murder and drama within a sect.
@@timbackman5915 The 4 missing boys in Gothenburg would be interesting
@@Jusuff the Dahlsjö-case? Nice.
The Kevin case?
The VAM-robbers?
We have our fair share of interesting cases in Sweden.
@@timbackman5915 Anders Lindbäck, John Ingvar Lövgren, Hans Marmbo and Hilda Nilsson. All serial killers and not that often talked about today but interesting cases.
3 of them killed early to mid 20th century, Hilda in the late 19th.
I feel like your writers are purposely choosing criminals with hard-to-pronounce names just to mess with you
😂😂
Thanks George. I love your episodes. They are so well researched & detailed. Fascinating look into places I won't get to go. Also, it's funny to watch Simon try to pronounce names from China/Hong Kong. The notes & asides are awesome too
Great episode Simon and George 👏 I enjoy the RUclips version of TCC
Can you guys do an episode on Nancy Crampton-Brophy? She’s a romance writer on trial for killing her husband. She wrote a blog post called “How to Murder Your Husband.”
That sounds a lot like Basic Instinct. Where Sharon Stone wrote books about murder and then killed her boyfriends in exactly that way.
Another “How to Murder Your Husband” episode would be Ruth Neslund on Lopez Island.
This is my fave episode so far
George really went all in on the research for this episode and it shows, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
I like George. As an American, it's nice to hear stories from other parts of the world instead of always our same-old terrible people.
Hey, early again!! Where is the journal Fact Boi? Need it!!! Keep up the excellent vids!!!
Hey early!
happy Friday everyone!!
Good episode, thank you
Bravo George!!!
Great one Simon and George
one of your best Simon, excellent story
For this lifelong Wisconsinite, I’ve not only owned a few, but would like to leave my pronunciation for Simon say it Knee san. Also for the writers, whatever the channel, consider this one… yesterday I watched a Forensic Files from 2007 titled Bitter Brew about the kidnapping of Coors chairman Adolph Coors. ❤️ this and all your channels!
Hi George. Looking forward to the script my friend.
Wow! I get new videos from The Casual Criminalist, Decoding The Unknown, and Brain Blaze all in one day? Thank you Factboy, very cool!
I would love a whole video on different transliteration systems for cantonese and mandarin!!! Not on this channel, but it’d be a cool video!
Very nice reading and very nice writting by my favorite writer by far for TCC!
Hell, DNA and *all forensics* are "circumstantial" - 17th century court system, whee.
Super Cool podcast again. Full Respect.
Listening to this for the second time because I fell asleep last night before you'd even finished the sponsor, XD Hope the watch time brings sweet ££s
This is the greatest video ever made
Athletic Greens advertises in some interesting places. I respect that.
I love George's scripts. He's so good at telling a story. :D
Great video!
Just fyi! Blanks do have recoil, but the kick varies depending on the gun being used etc.. 🙂❤️💕
32:53 Simon, buying a shotgun leaves a paper trail straight back to you if they are found after committing a robbery and you lose it. Using stolen shotguns leaves no such trail
Thank you, I was gonna say that
The way you drawled, "Well, bummer," had me snorting.
You should do an episode about a vigilante, technically a criminal and would be interesting to explore the psychology of a vigilante
Love your videos!
One other thing I have heard if you're trapped in a trunk is to kick in one or both tail lights and start waving like crazy or making as much motion as possible out of the hole to alert other drivers.
Great ep 👍🏾
You guys should do an episode on the Barbie and Ken killers front Canada ib the 1990s. There names are Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo
Love your work George, keep em coming. Simon, you're one of my favourite youtubers, I've subbed to literally all your channels. Please, for the love of beer, take some Chinese/Cantonese pronunciation lessons 😆
An episode I can watch an still sleep at night 👍 nice
Brilliant host
Big fan just doing what i can by working the algorithm!
How???
Excellent research George, much prefer fact over fiction in criminal cases …….
Liked because you are a Stewart
Wow, him asking for financial advice was absolutely the last thing I was expecting. The kidnapper either has balls of steel or he doesn't really understand how people respond when confronted by the people who kidnapped their child asking for advice on using their ill gotten gains.
11:20 How shallow is the boot of a car that a jack would be able to pop up the trunk? Does a jack really go up that high?
No, a jack wouldn't go up high enough but ya could clobber the culprit with the wheel brace (tyre iron)
