    I believe Christie has also attended a couple protests. She and Melissa have been the most outspoken non-black DM cast members in support of BLM. Likewise, Maddie, kenzie, and Chloe have also used their platform to really spread the message and educate and have (I believe all) attended protests. Brooke is probably the next most supportive. Kendall, Jill, and Paige all just did a couple generic posts (Jill and Kendall both posted 2 identical posts). Kalani has been the least involved (just a black square. That is it), Brynn has been a bit questionable and scarce, but still has made posts. Jojo hasn’t said much of anything, but I think that has more to do with the fact that her socials are curated for small children. I didn’t look into the season 8 cast much since they are still kids, but I did see that Hannah posted a blackout Tuesday square with a longer caption in support and she has linked a few things.

      @badmanicpower 4 года назад +201

      I wouldn’t expect anything from Ashlee & Brynn. Their privilege is just so far gone that I think they’re blinded by it.
      Jill & Kelly are both Trump supporters so it’s no surprise that Kendall, Brooke, & Paige wouldn’t be as outspoken. I expected more from Kira & Kalani, and I’m kind of disappointed that they haven’t been more outspoken.
      JoJo has said a few things, but considering her platform is very young children, I know a lot of parents would probably be upset solely for the fact she’s opening kids up to all that (however she did say something similar to what Nickelodeon said, a very kid friendly version).
      I personally haven’t really seen anything from Maesi or any of the S8 dancer, but they are all younger and a lot of them (especially the S8 dancers) seem to not really have much control over their own social media accounts.

    I always knew that Abby had a racist problem but I never realized the other cast mates were that way. I completely understand lifetime decision. If someone is going to be only racist and keep saying things that are offensive then they need to stay far away from each other. What sickens me is that people still have these narrow minded ideas about race. I also don’t appreciate Abby making fun of Nia and Camryn whether it was their feet,hair ect. These are little girls and your saying things that are extremely hurtful.
    I was really wanting to hear an interview from Holly and Nia. Both of the had some of the most intelligent conversations and had some greatest moments on the series. But yeah I don’t like how the producers treated the cast members who were of color. Yeah I feel bad for Kaya and Nicaya and how they were treated. Stereotyping people is not okay at all

    Kaya is amazing. She raised four children by herself, worked two jobs, graduated college, made dean’s list, lived in a safe neighborhood, enrolled her children in great schools, got a job as a social worker, and still had time to support Nikaya’s dance training. I was amazed when I watched that part of the video for the first time. She’s such an accomplished, spectacular woman. The show portrayed her so poorly, which really isn’t fair. She worked so hard and was so smart. She deserves more recognition. I liked her character in the first episode she was in. She seemed courageous, intelligent, and truly cared about her daughter. The show slowly made her seem like more of a stereotypical angry black woman. But she deserves to be treated like the smart, accomplished, hardworking, protective person that she is.

As if there was no way those little black girls could win. Your right, there is a lot of assumptions and stereotypes towards black dancers. But our instructors always tell us to kill them with our dancing, to show them that little black girls can have good technique. Keep pushing. I agree they were probably made to look like bad people but that doesn’t take away from the fact that Kaya DID speak poorly about another child on social media and Nicaya acted like a sore loser after the competition when Kendall beat her. “You only won because you’re famous” isn’t professional or mature in the slightest and even if that was the case, it was inappropriate to say in a mature setting and for her age it looks bratty. She couldn’t take her loss with grace. And Kaya, despite being a passionate, courageous, hardworking woman she DID act out of line on multiple occasions which I can’t defend. And that goes for moms like Kelly, Christi, Leslie, Kristie, etc. They may have been portrayed badly in some settings, but they weren’t 100% innocent victims.

    I think volumes will be spoken when the hashtags stop and we start seeing who is doing this for the right reasons and who is posting as a publicity thing.
    As a fandom, we need to listen and we need to educate ourselves. POC have tried to help educate us and we haven't listened. It is not their job to teach us. We also need to expand our circles. Look for more POC owned businesses. Strike up converdation with some different from yourself. Boycott businesses cough Home Depot cough who would rather support racism than POC.
    More importantly we need to hold people accountable including our loved ones. We should support our parents and our friends that are trying to do the right thing. We will end up making mistakes and saying the wrong things. Instead of attacking, we need to explain. If they continue to not listen, that is a different. I give my dad credit for the progress hes making because I know that the level he is starting at is different than my own. Not that I want credit for the right thing. I am merely saying that we should be encouraging those who are unlearning brainwashing and rewiring their morals and beliefs.
    As a dance community. We can continue to call out Bloch and Capezio to continue to widen their product lines for POC. Capezio and Bloch are listening, but we need to make sure they do not forget. In your own communities look into creating programs to help those afford dance classes that might not otherwise have the opportunity.
    We all have different "jobs" to do in this movement. Find yours and keep moving forward. This is more than a hash tag, we are fighting for people's lives.

    I believe that Christie is really trying to learn, even if she had said some racist things in the past. When you grow up in an environment where there is subtle racism, you’re bound to fall into that pattern until you get educated. Also I believe Brooke is genuinely supporting the movement because even though Kelly raised her, parents and children are capable of having different views. I know from experience. My dad and I definitely have different views but he is still my dad so I’m not going to “cancel” him out of my life but I will see him a little differently. Jill being racist kinda surprises me because I thought all of that crazy shit she did was for the show but nope... Kelly wasn’t a surprise. I knew she was a Trump supporter and Paige was also a Trump supporter and I feel like she hasn’t changed her views. Just because she has a black boyfriend does not mean that she’s not racist. I never liked Ashlee and Brynn. Seeing how Brynn has been racist in the past, I can see how Ashlee can be the one who’s teaching her those same views. Kira and Kahlani, I am shocked. I didn’t think they were that way but yea that’s a big yikes. I’m glad that the Lukasiaks and the Zieglers are outspoken.
    I also was kinda sad that Cathy is a blatant racist because I liked her on the show and I thought some of the racist things were staged by the producers. But no, she’s actually like that. Abby doesn’t surprise me. We all knew and good that she finally got fired but Lifetime is only doing this because other companies are getting backlash for not supporting BLM. So I don’t think it was genuine because if it was, they would have done it a long time ago. I’m glad you used this episode to speak out about the movement.

I lowkey felt like Kira and kalani were lowkey racist cuz yk theyre just the type to not be outspoken about it. Ashlee and Brynn are the same they keep theres lowkey. I do feel like Christi and Melissa have changed, and I don’t rly think Melissa was trying to be racist I think she was just trying to fit in with the moms, and it lowkey killed her how the moms treated kaya. I do think Christi has definitely changed. As for the hylands, as Leslie said on the show Kelly grew up very privileged and rich and that’s how she raised her kids so they don’t shprosie me much.

    • @ilsenleon2378
      @ilsenleon2378 4 года назад +2

      Poo Teee The show made her seem as the angry black mom and I feel so bad that I also fell into that stereotype. People have been saying that Holly is not integrated into black culture because she didn’t stand up for the Black Lives Matter movement and she seems to be mostly with white friends. I just think that they grew up differently and they were very privileged to not face as much discrimination or got used to it because of Lifetime giving Nia a career. I don’t think we should judge Holly and Nia too much because they did stand up for the movement although hopefully they will say more about Abby when they feel ready.
      I never felt that Kira and Kalani were racist but Ashlee and Brynn, I did because of the things she said on the internet and the friends she had. Christi was probably like Kelly at first but she learned and that’s why I admire her. People can still change. I don’t know about Melissa doing it to fit in with the moms. She was probably like that because of the producer bias. And I didn’t know that Kelly grew up privileged but it doesn’t surprise me. I believe that people are very sheltered and don’t have a lot of outside experience with the world can become racist and that’s why it’s important to learn about other people’s experiences.

    I've grown up in the dance world and there was always a racist undertone. From my hair being an issue, to believing that I wouldn't get lead roles simply because of my skin. Dance Moms was a terrible show for everyone involved but ESPECIALLY for all of the incredibly talented African Americans on the show. Nia, Nicaya, Kamryn, and Camryn were all so incredibly underrated and shown to be talent less when in reality, they were all talented and improved a ton over the years. It boggled my mind that anyone would've wanted this rancid show to continue. I'm so glad it's over and Abby is being held accountable for all the crap she's done to these dancers. No 7 year old deserves to hear that they are there to be a sprinkle of color and that's it. Holly needs to speak out, she will earn so much more of my respect if she does. I guess we shall see.

    I've said, racism is like salt, its in almost everything, even if you can't taste it. It has different names other than salt and sodium, so people look at the ingredients and assume there's none in it if they don't see those two words. AND ITS WORSE FOR SOME PEOPLE THAN OTHERS.
    For us, it can get REALLY HARD to remember that not all white/nonblack people are racists toward black people, and that some are good enough to just be normal people. Thanks for being normal.

    This situation as a whole truly breaks my heart. As a white woman, I admit that never once in my whole life have I had to fear for myself just because of my race. Others do not have that luxury otherwise these atrocities wouldn’t happen.
    That being said, even though Lifetime dropped Abby I personally think that it shouldn’t have taken 8 seasons and public outcry in order to make this decision. My friend is currently studying child and adolescent development, and she has always said that Abby and possibly a few of the moms have blatantly abused the girls on national TV and no one has ever done anything about it. The producers are a huge part of the problem because they knew that Abby said some abusive and racist things, otherwise they wouldn’t be obliged to keep it hidden. In fact, it’s even worse when you realize that they kept some of it in the show in order to have drama and make money. These beautiful dancers deserved so much better and my heart goes out to them. I’m glad to hear that some of them are using their platforms for BLM ❤️

    Have you done or could you do a deep dive into the racist dances? I personally found the “Haka” dance in season 8 deeply offensive. As a fellow Aussie, I’ve been exposed to haka quite a bit (I’m sure you have too), and I found it really upsetting that they essentially used the name for clickbait and didn’t even attempt to incorporate elements of this powerful tradition into the dance. At least with the Bollywood and African dances they did, they were true to the actual dance style, even if it’s still otherwise inappropriate. I can’t imagine how upsetting it might have been for a Māori person to have seen that dance.

      Yup I’m from New Zealand and I was so excited when I heard they were doing a haka dance but I was honestly so mad when I watched the episode, there was literally nothing about the dance that was remotely related to Maori culture, the music, make up, choreography, costumes - they didn’t even get the right colour - None of it was even close. I don’t understand what the point of it was, like all they had to do was quickly google search haka and they could’ve got at least a general idea. It was the most bizarre thing I’ve ever watched

      @Loretta & @Anna McConnell - it was not a dance to relate to the Maori culture at all or to an actual Haka. How little attention did you pay to the episode? Also to say it was "clickbait" ignores that it wasn't developed to be shown in pieces on RUclips. It was by no means offensive.

    • @annamcconnell8451
      @annamcconnell8451 4 года назад +4

      C J I think you need to watch the episode again, they literally said it was “paying homage to New Zealand” and the dance was called Haka. You’re clearly unfamiliar with New Zealand, because Maori culture IS New Zealand culture. So I’m not sure what you mean by saying wasn’t related to Maori culture or an actual Haka - given the dance was called Haka which is an aspect of Maori culture. Of course you don’t find it offensive because you clearly have no knowledge of what you’re talking about

The first time I was shocked by a hint of racism was when Holly was telling the moms about her experiences as a black woman, how she was discriminated and such. I remember Jill's surprise, "I had no idea these things were happening to you" (as in "you're educated and rich"). What kind of a privilege bubble do you have to inhabit in order to ignore racism exists? I live in Argentina, and if I do have a better assessment of the situation is simply because Jill doesn't care about educating herself. Instead of listening to what they had to say and trying to learn the moms, mostly Jill did not believe anything they were saying. Jill just said I don't think that's true when both Holly and Camille were expressing their frustrations. Remember in season 7 when the girls left Abby and became the irreplaceables. Camille said Camryn was called an ugly n-word because of drama that happened between Brynn and Camryn on social media. ( both girls said this drama was resolved and they’re mutual friends now) literally after Camille said that she started crying and no one cared but Cheryl. No one even comforted Camille apart from her own daughter. I don’t blame Camryn for saying in her dance moms video that she felt like no one cared about her or her Mom. She wasn’t treated well on the show. Also apparently Jill said (according to Ashlee) during a season 7B episode that Jill didn’t want Camryn on the irreplaceables team. I felt so bad for them. Nia literally only got featured roles based on her race. The Rosa Parks Dance, Good help is hard to find and Free at last. If she had gotten other lead roles which weren’t based on her race then it could be argued she wasn’t typecased. But the problem was that was the time only time she was featured. The one time she wasn’t given lead roles based on her race she had to portray a “traitor” based on what “Nia did” which was recording a song...it’s so ridiculous . It’s so unfair. She was typecasted. Oh yeah and her solo “promised land” also remember when Abby called Nia’s braids horrible. She never wore braids on the show since, I really hope she don’t let Abby’s rudeness bring her down because she has lovely hair .
