A high quality survival knife is the most essential gear
It depends… urban survival or wilderness survival?
Water
Whatever is needed at the time for the priority at hand. So it's a dynamic answer to a static question but, to answer your question with something like an object...then I'd have to say knowing where you are located and where you're heading is top, so compass/maps are number 1. If you already know the location and heading bc it's your native land than I'd say fire. I know how to build a fire wirh sticks and stones but it's way harder than simply pulling out a lighter, matches, tinder etc. Fire cleans water so eliminates water filter, fire heats body so eliminates worry of exposure to cold, fire cooks food but doesn't catch it for you so...maybe a really high quality snare would be high on the list of most essential gear too. If a firearm is allowed on the list then that's easily number 1. Any frontiersman or Native American valued their rifle as their most essential part of their kit bc their life depended on it for food and self defense from dangerous animals/criminals. Secondly would have been their fire kit. Watch the movie about revenge and survival with Leonardo DiCaprio titled Revenant or something close to that name. He had his fire in a necklace. Edit: he had a knife around his neck too, so like some other people said, a good blade is an obvious choice, blades were b4 firearms.
