I think another problem it's that game freak did try to shake things up and innovate with Black and White (more story driven and deeper story, only new pokemon before post game, new mechanics and battle modes, more difficult battles, etc.), but the fan backlash was insane. You can see it in how far they snapped back with x and y. However, now people love the gen 5 games, so maybe they're moving back into that innovation mode.

Pretty sure Black & White were not particularly innovative. In fact having only new Pokémon before postgame is a step back in my eyes.
The new battle modes were restricted to one or two NPCs, so it’s not like they were used in the main story. Difficulty is not innovative at all if the battles remain exactly as they have been. The only thing that GameFreak tried to do was have Pokémon grow up with the audience in the most basic of ways. It was a soft reboot of sorts, and well…People did not take too kindly to the game pretending other games did not exist.
Legends is far more innovative because they are actively changing the core gameplay, whereas Black & White didn’t actually change anything. People give Gen 5 way too much

However, the higher ups at Game Freak are just as bad, if not worse, since they literally refuse to increase their team size.
Legends Arceus is terribly designed in about every single way, yet I can guarantee you none of that is by intention. (Besides the terrible Pokémon balancing ig? But they may have not had enough time to tweak the numbers correctly) I'm sure the creators wanted to make a better game, but you can't exactly do that when you're given 2 years or less to make the entire thing, on a team who's estimated size is basically nothing.
That's why fans defending the flaws of the game is so harmful. Not because it's letting a company get away with extremely low quality control, but because that extremely low quality is indicative of far worse conditions. When fans "defend devs" they are quite literally advocating for their abuse. It's super disgusting.

To me Pokémon has evolved and iimproved greatly since Red & Blue. I love Sword & Shield, i never skipped a Pokémon game either. Legends Arceus is a backdoor pilot for a secondary main series since they aren't going to fully replace the road to making every country into a proper Pokémon region. I also don't mind there not being a National Pokédex anymore since actually a few generations ago since the phasing out started in Kalos. In real life, you don't see the same wildlife in every country so it is more realistic for each region to have its own habitats and wildlife. I also appreciate that the regions now have their own cultures, way of life and their own way of battling. Like how Z-Crystals are part of Alola's culture overall and also part of their Pokémon battles. Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing Pokémon being part of Galar's culture and them having Stadiums to accomodate them. Pokémon to me now really feels like a Pokémon journey, in the old gens i couldn't chill and spend time with my team, now we can actually camp out and actually spend time together. Also Legends Arceus is not a spin off, Let's Go isn't either. Both are main game backdoor pilots though one was masked under Yellow's 20th Anniversary and converting GO only players into main game players

The biggest problem up to this point is that Pokemon has become more of a multi-media franchise than a video game franchise. There's more of an emphasis on things like shows, merchandise, and the card game, and less attention is being paid to making good games. Sword and Shield is the biggest example of this, accomplishing the bare minimum to qualify as a new generation game.
That being said, Legends Arceus feels more like an experiment, with a lot of gameplay tweaks being the focus here. Many of these changes actually feel like a step in the right direction, so I'm hoping that if this game does well enough, they'll start making more games that are genuinely fresh and polished.

Legends Arceus seems like they went back to the first anime in the 90s and actually made a game based on that world finally. Not the region but the mechanics. With trainers sneaking up on Pokémon and chucking balls, and then running for their lives while getting attacked. The games always were limited by the Game Boy technology which is understandable but keeping that gameplay all the ways to Sword and Shield was painful to see. People fell in love with the story about a kid who was getting electrocuted by a yellow mouse and dragged it along on an adventure to collect and train dangerous monsters, they're finally making games that kind of feel like they are depicting that world.

One aspect that gives me hope as that this isn't even a spinoff. They consider this to be a mainline entry. Not only that, but as pointed out, random battles were phased out, and entirely gone by Sword and Shield. Even the tall grass in those games. wild Pokemon were shadows you can avoid. So to me, this does feel a lot like the natural evolution of the series's mechanics than a wild experimentation, and I'm optimistic about what they'll carry into into future games. The boss battles where you fight the Pokemon yourself directly is by far the most fun I've had in a Pokemon game.
As for why the most profitable series in the world is still so comparatively underdeveloped, I'd blame the decision making higher ups at either Nintendo or the Pokemon Company, whoever allocates the budget and time for GameFreak's development. Just because the brand makes infinite money doesn't mean the devs get to use it. Since it's such a serialized franchise with anime and merch to push, they also likely don't get as fair a deadline as they should. That's why I'm more inclined to believe them when they say that shortcomings like dexxit came from development issues that they literally had no time to fix, than the idea that they're lazy or incompetent. Not making assumptions that you in particular think that, but its a tired stance I've seen so often.

I personally have no issues with the more technical part of what this game lacks (textures, FPS, etc.) i personally just like the idea of going out, studying these Pokemon and going on a wild adventure to fix what could break time and space. not to mention being more active in what your Pokemon do is always a treat, even if it is just walking around them during battle. Hell, I like the collectables like Unowns and Spiritomb's wisps that make you find cool little places and just explore the world you found yourself in. i know people also cry out about the barrenness of the game but considering this is just old Sinnoh i don't want it having a city with each new area. sure, temple ruins say there was civilization but that doesn't mean there is gonna be ruins all over the place. you think the Pyramids are just spaced out for every 10 miles of desert?
I just don't see the major complaints people have for this game and it baffles me people aren't that excited for this title considering the snore we had for SWSH. heck, I'll even say Sun and Moon were lacking in gameplay, though i liked the story. this strikes a balance i like and want Game Freak to continue down and hopefully make it grander.

Pretty sure Sun and Moon also at least tried to make you feel invested with the whole post battle thing, but I got tired of that after a while, though it was a way to get around using healing items for status effects, like paralysis and poison. But yeah, it did tend to drag and I'm almost happy I've lost major interest, though I still want to get a Switch to play some of the games, even if it's not the Pokemon ones (maybe Brilliant Diamond)

Tom, hope you’re doing well buddy. You do great reviews ^^
Oh also, the way you discussed Pokemon’s Camp feature, reminded me of the feelings I first got upon playing around with my Pokémon in Amie. Even though that specific style of interacting with your team has been mostly left in the past, and I think the Camp is all around a better evolution of it, I do still think there’s something special about the original Amie features of XY (even Sun and Moon didn’t quite capture it for me).
So that’s why I have been thinking, I’d be interested to see if they try and iterate on the Camp further in the next main series game and possibly even include some of the aesthetics, design elements or mini games of Amie. That would be amazing for my nostalgia at least haha

I think something that should be kept in mind is that, while Nintendo does own a stake in the franchise (49% I believe), they don't control the development of the games. That is handled mostly in-house by GameFreak, who have their own operating budget and staff to work with. Nintendo COULD invest some money and developers into the franchise, but it's far more likely for a new sequel than for a spinoff or remake.

I want to see better writing in the Pokémon games. I got really excited when Black and White were released and we had the rich characters of N, Bianca, and Cheren, the question posed by the narrative about the ethics of catching and forcing Pokémon to battle, and the philosophical debate between the characters about the importance of truth vs ideals. The gameplay was practically forgotten under my excitement to find out what would happen next and how the characters would grow and their conflicts be resolved. I thought the was a sign of things to come. And then X and Y came out and it was back to the same flat characters who have no conflicts and aren’t interested in anything except getting you to go challenge the next gym or stealing Pokémon because “we steal Pokémon, we’re so evil, muahahaha!”. It was so flat compared to Black and White, and the following titles felt the same. I lost interest in the series until they announced Legends of Arceus.

Its interesting how some people feel like they *need* to min-max their decisions when playing a game. I feel like thats not the best way to play pokemon, with so many options for pokemon, of course there's going to be something you can do to make the game braindead easy. Just dont do that.

    • @gubsy3730

This philosophy is painfully misguided imo. I'm not one of those people who says the game was too easy as the team I built for myself was pretty reserved by happenstance, but getting frustrated at the player base for not balancing the game when it's the job of the developers to do so is kind of ridiculous. Whether or not you think people should or shouldn't "mix max" their teams doesn't stop the players from doing that, as it's simply a fun thing to do, coming from someone who DOES tend to do that. What developers are essentially asking when they release games with unbalanced aspects to them is to have the players fit themselves into one of two camps. Either they play the game in a way that removes a lot of the challenge, or they willingly force themselves to play in a way they know is suboptimal, both of which are situations the players should not need to face. So, instead of getting mad at the players, ask the developers to do more to prohibit that kind of behavior, (which players naturally trend towards) like adding difficulty options for example.

I’ve had two playthroughs of the game so far. My first, wherein I did not focus on the pokedex, and so mostly headed towards main or side objectives whilst catching rare/unobtained Pokemon on the way. My second, I focused on building out the pokedex whilst still heading towards main objectives, catching/battling EVERYTHING on the way.
My first playthrough had gotten quite tough towards the end of the game, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The second, whilst I haven’t finished, has been laughably easy because of how over-levelled I am, even after swapping out members for new additions (it’s a monotype ghost run and I want to use every ghost type during it).
So, essentially, doing what the game really wants me to do, the game is incredibly easy for it. You can tell me not to do these things all you want but, unlike other games, this one is actively encouraging me to pursue game objectives that leave me incredibly over-equipped to handle what are supposed to be progression blockers.
If we want to talk about Alpha Pokemon, there’s some pokedex challenges that require capturing alpha specimen, so whilst you can say that players don’t HAVE to engage with them, the game wants you to.

Not "hundreds" of years before mainline Pokémon, just "a hundred". The general consensus and idea is that the year is likely around 1860-1890 (our time), and is supposed to draw similarities during that same era of time, when the "westernization" of Japan really first started (as reflected by some of the early westerner clothing in the shop).

@@MikeTheEnforcer The book likely isn't mentioning the Legends Arceus time specifically, it's talking about a time even further back when humans and Pokémon were the same. Fearing Pokémon also doesn't set any timeline, since they didn't go from loving Pokémon, to fearing Pokémon, to loving Pokémon again, so fear doesn't set a specific time since basically "all" of time before 1890 people were afraid of Pokémon. It can still be talking about the same area, but the timeline doesn't have to be the same. And if it were hundreds of years old, the western influence would make absolutely no sense, since that would mean it was before the Meiji restoration period that introduce western designs and philosophy to Japan.

Bit I do t care to catch the same one 10 times or catch ones I dont want at all. And does that mean there is no trainer battles?

My only complaint thus far is they gave Stantler an evolution instead of doing the right thing and putting him in the incinerator

Unpopular opinion, i do not want the old pokémon formula to be thrown out, infact, the one legends arceus brings SHOULD stay in non-mainline games

Oak invented the Modern Pokedex like how someone can invent an early air conditioning and someone else invented the modern air conditioning.
Pokeballs were invented somewhere else and brought over by the galaxy team ig.

The exp share really isn't that good. I caught my first alpha pokemon early on and my entire team was became way overleveled

The game encourages you to switch Pokemon out frequently to fill out many Pokedex entrys.
This game is not about challange. It's about catching every Pokemon in the Hisui region.
Just because it's easy doesn't mean it's bad. Fast experience in this game is a good thing to reduce the grind for the Pokedex entrys which is the main point of the game.
There are rarely trainer battles and even if there are, most of the time it's clear they are not a challange.
Don't treat this game like Pokemon Gen 1-8.
      It's different.

@@tadaokou4919 The fast progress of exp doesn't really work in a system where you have to catch as many pokemon as possible.
The "just switch your pokemon out" argument never made sense as the games want you to get attached to your mons

@@malicekerendu3574 Yes, but that is a completly different critizism.
It is obvious that you are SUPPOSED to use multiple different Pokemon. Just look at the tasks they give you for many of the Pokemon. ""Times you've seen it use ..."
That is a clear message from Gamefreak towards the player that they are supposed to use multiple different Pokemon in this game. More than 6.
Is that good? I don't know. But it works for this game. Does it work in the mainline games? Depends on the game. Sword and Shield was clearly designed with leveling up many different Pokemon in mind. It's the best way to experience the game, but it is an extremly flawed one, yes.
Doesn't really change the fact that Legends Arceus is not about difficulty. You won't have your big league battles or anything similar in this game.
This game is easy going and it is supposed to be that way. Giving you less experience would just drag out the gameplay and make everything take way to long.
In this specific case about this specific game, the exp share is a good thing.
If you complain about it in one of the mainline games, I can totally understand that. But here? No.
If you dislike it here, than maybe this game is not for you.

To be fair the game doesn't force you to use an alpha on your team, if easy exp is a problem then just box it

Very random comment, but the narrator kind of sounds like the completionist. I even had to double check the channel and the description to make sure it wasn't.
