Canon G1 X Mark II Hands-On Field Test

  • Canon's first attempt a large sensor compact, the G1 X was not our favourite camera. However, Canon listened to the major complaints of the original and brought us the improved G1 X Mark II. Is this a worthy competitor to the recent slew of large sensor compact cameras?

    If you think its same price point you forgot about all those expensive bright lenses you would need for Sony A6000 to cover the Canon G1xmark ii 24-120mm range!

    Its funny that I'm looking at these comparisons now, 2 years late, but they're still relevant. I'm between the Pasasonic LX100, Sony RX100 mk4 and the camera that started me on this kick, the Pasasonic GM1 with a comparable lens. The GM1, being pocketable by DSLR standards, with a large sensor and lots of flexibility in lenses, started my personal "travel camera" search. Upon discovering the feature set of cameras like the LX100 and Sony RX100's, I think a large sensor compact is the way to go. Price point determines much in this battle, with the Sony coming in over $900 with their mk4 iteration. Excellent videos, guys. I look to your videos when making decisions about camera gear!

    Gr-dc1a a larger grip made by Canon for the mark 2 works great.
    The two rings on the front the little ring on the bank can be programmed to do whatever you won't .
    The touchscreen works great and don't like it you can turn it off.
    And you can also get a ring adapter to fit different filters on it
    You can also get a Len hood that clicks on.
    Your view is interesting but missing some details

    talking from the point of view of a pure compact user, I might be rare because I'm quite avert on choosing to go system due to the bulk and the required storage spaces you need to even have them in your home (I live in a small flat, so these kinds of things matter), and this makes me want to go versatile in the smallest package possible, and that's why I decided to buy a Canon G15, and when that retires or simply when I get the money, I will go for this camera, you just can't beat its versatility, you have DoF control, with a lens that is aptly bright in the wide and with a useful range of zoom with bright aperture at the long end as well in a package sizable to mirrorless and yet you don't have to worry about the "system", you don't have to get 2 or 3 lenses to match the capability of a 24-120mm (eq) f2.0-3.9 less parts to take care of means less things to go wrong either in home or in shooting.
    I agree though on the point of the EVF, I for one certainly won't mind a little bit extra bulk and weight for a built in EVF, then again Canon might be afraid to lose market on their entry-level dSLR, just let that market die already dang it, I would rather go for cameras like this with full blown functionality rather than having to buy a plasticky dSLR with shitty kit lens and having to go deeper in my pocket to have a good image, not to mention the all famous build quality of the G series, all Canon Gs are made in Japan with stainless steel and aluminium construction, and somehow that didn't got the attention of anyone.

    Be glad you didn't try the external viewfinder. I tried it at the Canon booth on a photography expo here in Holland: it's a piece of garbage. The lag and stutter is unbearable. Granted, they said it was a prepoduction model, but it was around 2 weeks ago, so I doubt that much has changed. I know that most EVFs lag a bit, but as long as the image is without stuttering, I can live with that. However, this thing is like watching a 4fps video...

    I have a canon G1 X and personally find it a perfectly usable camera. OK: The AF is a tad slow, especially in low light, but I've got some of my best photos from it. The IQ is pretty amazing compared to small sensor equivalents and gives Canon's APS-C cameras a run for their money

    Great video as always - I do think the Panasonic LX100 has not become the king in this class - I think the RX100m3 is in a different class, a small compact class and is of course the king in that class.
    LX100 is smaller and lighter has 4k recording - has EVF - more features - faster lens - better manual controls - faster focus etc

    I think your last statement is perfect..go mirrorless or go smaller. I wish they could put that sensor on a smaller body but I understand is not so easy...then again, the A6000 body is smaller so why not...I own the A7Rii , NEX-6, NEX-F3 and RX100 iii and well the A7Rii has me spoiled for IQ so I was looking for maybe a compact one like the RX100 but with better low iso. I guess I out of luck for now.

    • @pentaxbro
      @pentaxbro 8 лет назад +1

      I don't agree! Smaller means you will loose the physical controls , grip, quality etc. Bigger means not so portable ,+ many expensive lenses to cover that range 24-120mm etc. Also High ISO, color is definitely better from G1Xii vs Sony RX-100s!

    BarnETO Research shows over 1/2 of smart phone users now use there cell phones instead of compact cameras. The compact camera market fell by 30% in 2013. I know these cameras are better than cell phones but these cameras are going to be harder to sell in the future because of the cell phone convenience. I would guess this camera store knows this too.

    Just got one myself and posted my thoughts on my channel. I agree about the small battery. I guess they had to fit it alongside other feature they had to design into the body. The rear dial in exposure comp is annoying having to switch to the front step ring. Also in Manual mode, you have to use the front step ring when selecting BOTH shutter and aperture when toggling with the back dial. Very un-intuitive. I still like the camera.

    Canon offers yet another half-hearted, *meh* attempt, albeit w/ a very nice lens on it this time around, in the "premium" compact mirrorless marketplace. How many of Canon's offerings are there left which haven't yet felt blistering competition from the lighter, smaller, better spec'ed and less expensive mirrorless marketplace? That number is very small, and that number of offerings gets fewer and fewer every year. This is the best they choose to produce to full on show their commitment to compete in the mirrorless arena?

      Then what about the rx100 success. It's a small compact with DSLR like image quality and it was a home run.
      Cellphones give you no zoom and no creative control over depth of field. Therefore an market for GOOD compacts will remain.
      Cheap slow tiny sensor compacts like the worse then it's predecessor canon elph 340hs has no place in today's world.

    Canon and Nikon are number one and two in the DSLR Market with barely any competition, but if they go mirrorless, then they are competing head on with Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic and especially Sony, and Canon is afraid if they admit that mirrorless is the future buy putting there name behind it, that they are telling the world that these other companies are also the future, and there goes there DSLR market or the camera monopoly, but it's really stupid, because in a year or two Canon and Nikon will be forced to compete, but by then they will be way behind the rest of the market, and they will struggle to catch up, and many customers that went to Sony and the other companies might not ever be a Canon or Nikon customer again, so if Canon and Nikon were smart they would not wait, Nikon should be making a D800e mirrorless, that is similar weight and size to the A7r with all the Nikon controls just like there DSLR's, but with a fully articulating touch screen, and an EVF that is even better than the XT1, or a combination optical and electronic view finder, with an amazing focusing system with focus points that go almost to the outside of the frame, like an A6000, video modes like a GH4, I could go on and on, but they have the ability to make the ultimate mirrorless camera now, but they are afraid of what it will mean to there DSLR monopoly, and Canon should be doing the same making a 70D and 5D mirrorless with there regular lens mount, and if they put all the right features into it, it would be better than any DSLR they currently have, and they would sell a ton of them, the benefits of mirrorless is undeniably, and it is the future even if Canon and Nikon want to act like it isn't, it's not mirrorless vs DSLR, it is new technology vs old technology

    • @bohnstube
      @bohnstube 10 лет назад

      You do have to wonder why Canon is hanging on so single-mindedly and doggedly to the old technology of the slappy and flappy mirror, while with adapters their vast collection of lenses can today be used on most other camera brand's bodies. This isn't even really like a fight between allegiances to producing either film cameras or digital, this is just a stubborn almost "last gasp" to try and convince smaller and smaller populations of enthusiast photographers every year now who want to aspire to call themselves "professional" photographers, that the only tools in their kits should be their dslrs. By not showing what many believe Canon could really do if it was fully engaged in the mirrorless marketplace as well as in today's high-end dslr market, they really look to be only hurting themselves.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 10 лет назад +4

      bohnstube "You do have to wonder why Canon is hanging on so single-mindedly and doggedly to the old technology of the slappy and flappy mirror, while with adapters their vast collection of lenses can today be used on most other camera brand's bodies"
      1. They hang on to what sells. Look at the sales numbers for mirrorless. Not a pretty sight.
      2. Lenses is where the money is.

    • @bohnstube
      @bohnstube 10 лет назад +1

      mountainhobo 1. Latest available sales numbers for Canon's dslr cameras compared to the number of combined sales for comparable megapixel and class models from the exclusively mirrorless manufacturers (Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, Olympus, Samsung, Leica, and just for sh*ts 'n' giggles include the sales of Nikon 1's mirrorless offerings, are quite comparable actually, w/ no indication that the number of dslr's sold by Canon is going to magically increase for no apparent reason in the near future. Any real "performance gap" that once existed between mirrorless and dslr's in the APS-C segment of the marketplace has for all intents and purposes been closed by mirrorless offerings from, for ex., Sony and other manufacturers. 2. Canon's lenses optical strengths can be taken advantage of by using mirrorless camera bodies (w/ adapters) w/ only minimal, if any, trade-offs in many cases. They'll sell regardless of whether or not Canon offers more and better mirrorless camera body offerings along side their dslr offerings in the future. Full-frame dslr performance has now been squarely in the sights of the mirrorless-exclusive manufacturers for over a year now. It's only a matter of time. For ex., video has only been in existence on dslr's for less than *6 years* as of the posting of this video, w/ 1080p the now expected *standard* on even new base-model dslr's, and 4K is already making waves as being included very soon on new top-end camera models. Canon, no matter how much it huffs and puffs about how *great* it's older, heavier, bulkier, and more unnecessarily complicated "new technology" is, is not going to be able to deny for much longer the progress made by the mirrorless manufacturers. Yes, Canon's consumer photography business will survive on the strength of their lens business, for now. They're just not doing themselves any favors by simply refusing to admit that top of the line and very competitive offerings exist in the mirrorless marketplace today.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 10 лет назад

      bohnstube I do not disagree in principle (I sold my DSLR gear and moved on to mirrorless). But while Canon is holding steady, mirrorless sales have actually dropped, so the poor market affected mirrorless more than DSLRs. However, long term, as technology improves, I have no doubt that mirrorless will strengthen itself. Nevertheless, Canon is making the right business decision right now. Who knows what else they have in development. What I hope is that Canon improves its sensor technology.

      if you can get by with mirrrorless, you probably had some BS plastic crop DSLR. which is basically crap anyways. I love when I hear idiots say "I sold all me DSLR gear... blah...blah". you act like you had the end-all-be-all. reality is you probably had an old plastic crop DSLR and some low end lenses if any. I'm sorry but that just means you out bought your own needs with low end stuff. the mirrorless system tho.

      Akash Singh This is an artificial distinction. A consumer is ready to spend $x, and wants the best jacket-pocketable camera for that amount of money. Vast majority of people buying interchangeable lens cameras never buy another lens anyway, so for all practical purposes, they are fixed lens. G1X and a6000 are perfectly cross-shoppable (is that a word?!).

    Canon crippling their camera? That's an absurd! Absolutely outrageous! They never do that! EVER! Even more in video... They didn't cripple their DSLR from getting any improvements in video just because they now have the EOS Cinema line up, no, no, that's not right, saying these things about Canon, they have been the most innovative, always supporting creative minds with the best they can offer!

      I had high hope for this one because the aperture thing with the previous model - besides its bulkiness and ugliness - just like the Sony RX100 was a major let down to me. And some stupid and blind Sony fanboys insisted in saying that it was not possible to make a faster aperture lens for such enourmous 1" sensor, well, the G1X has a 1.5" and does just that. But the lack of controls for video, slow fps and not so snappy AF are great let downs for me. I hope that someone realize that if you do it right, it will sell great, there are tons of people waiting for someone that can do it right. Can Panasonic pull that off?

      theSUBVERSIVE Don't forget that while Canon managed to make a faster lens with a larger sensor, the lens barrel is much longer and does not fully retract when powered down. I'm still pretty impressed with what Sony managed to cram into something truly pocket sized.

      Don't get me wrong, I'm aware of the pros and cons of the RX100, I didn't say it wasn't a good camera, it's just not for me. It's just that losing aperture so quickly won't do for me, in the RX100 you f/1.8 at the widest angle @28mm, but when you get to 35mm you already lost a full stop and that's too much for me. The 3-stops difference between the brightest aperture in the wide angle and tele is too much for me.
      I get the size advantage but I'd take G1X's size in order to have a better aperture, giving the sensor size difference I guess that if Sony was to make something the same size, they would be able to get an even better aperture - even more because Sony has been rocking on making sensors.
      I wanted a high-end compact of this sort to pair up with a normal ILC and it had to be either good for photo with fast AF or good for video - and with reasonable aperture. Thanks for the reply!

    Canon need to stfu with their G series cameras. There are WAY better options out there and quite honestly, the Canon G days are over. They only need to work on their SLRs.

    To summerize.
    Good fast lens. Which is the only one of it's kind but.
    The sensor is dissapointing.
    Ergonomics are an disaster.
    Focussing is not there yet.
    No creative options in video and no sound.
    Pretty hefty price tag.
    Leaves me wondering that this lens get's wasted here. Give us that lens for m43 for that price. I would buy one.

      I think it is a fair price given there is nothing like this on the market. of course the price will drop big time over time. either way 800 is not a lot for a compact with these specs.
      fwiw, all canon sensors are "disappointing". they bet big on the wrong man fracturing process, which is a long term problem. that said, who really cares about having the worlds greatest sensor in a family point and shoot. this is designed to be an "always with me" camera for folks with other big cameras. in that context this seems awesome for me.

      2/3in sensor. numbskull. not event in the same zip code. plus it's 28mm not 28mm, which is huge.
      the one thing the cameras have in common is size. the x20 is stupidly huge for what it is considering that tiny sensor.
