For road trips these things are fantastic. I've used mine since 2018 and although I usually bring a backpacking tent as well. As for the MPG issue, I have mine mounted on a below roof height rack on the back of my truck. No noticeable effect on gas mileage.
@@JakeLuke308 to dislike and leave a negative comment. There are lots of channels dedicated to reviewing products. CNN is supposed to be news. This is an absolute waste of their resources.
I don’t know man. In my experience, these things take as much time to set up as a two person tent and more time(and energy) to take down and pack up. Besides, you can’t drive your car once you’ve set them up.
We love our Tuff Stuff Alpha rtt. We did add a soft mattress topper due to mattress was super firm, but it sleeps perfectly now. Worst part is bathroom breaks in the middle of the night lol. We also put ours on an adventure trailer so we can run errands without breaking down camp.
You disconnect the crossbars and then remove the tent. Kind of self explanatory. Probably requires two people unless you are incredibly strong or incredibly weak.
I just took a 3,800 mile trip to watch the eclipse and it worked out great. When I got tired I would pull off in a rest area set it up and go to sleep. The hardest thing is closing it up, getting all the flaps tucked in and zipping the cover back on. I have it on a 2019 Ford Ranger crew cab and it is mounted on the bed CAP and I haven't noticed mush fuel economy drop, .5-1 MPG.
The up and down motion is there because the ladder was not set up correctly. And when you put enough weight on it for long enough, the tent gets damaged, and potentially the mounting structure.
IMO if you are not using this type of tent at least 30 nights a year (a lot of camping), it's not worth $3,000. Of even less value is the new Thule version which folds up into a box shape and stores across the rear of your vehicle, mounted to the trailer hitch, priced more than $4,000. If you are really attracted to this style of tent camping (out of an SUV), I'd rather look into the style which folds up like a normal tent and stores inside the SUV, but folds out to make a larger tent combining the bed of the SUV with a larger tent attached to the open rear of the vehicle. This gives a much more useful, all-weather tent.
I would much rather descend a latter to piss, than by default have to dirt nap my tent on the ground. And any rain whatsoever and it’s an automatic mud bath. A wild animal is much less likely to rip my throat out while I sleep if I’m up a ladder. An animal isn’t gonna lift its leg and piss all over a roof tent. And whether it’s pissed on or not, CLEANING a dirt nap ground tent compared to one that’s always up off the ground is night & day. I can also fully clean & dry a roof tent while it’s up, but I see a problem with cleaning a huge tent ON the ground when I usually clean things BECAUSE they have been on the ground haha. You don’t have to stake roof tents down. LMAO and who can’t climb a ladder drunk?? Yes, say goodbye to tenting in extreme weather with a roof tent though, unlike a Hilleberg tent that is fine even in a hurricane. That’s the main negative for me. So in a violent storm I would be forced to lock things down and rough it in the car. I’m taking that trade off with ease!! For me, the smaller the ground tent the more likely I’d be to buy it (because I think of the nightmare of cleaning it). A Hilleberg Staika is on the small side, but if you gotta clean it it’s gonna seem humorous!! The Staika’s the largest one I’d ever consider (but you can’t even find the inner mesh for sale anymore and it’s pissing me off).
Other cons: high centre of gravity, more likely to rollover when offroading, worse handling around corners. heavy weight needs crane or two people to install/uninstall. Can't enter a lot of parking (shopping, office, hospital etc.) with 2.1 metre height restriction. Very loud (hearing damage) wind noise at high speeds, especially in less insulated vehicles like jeep wrangler or toyota hilux/tacoma. Only useful for people who regularly go camping or overlanding (time saved adds up quickly especially with hardshell roof tent) and are ok with the many drawbacks.
They look interesting but I would worry that I had left the hand break off or a tornado would strike. Result, like a scene out of an Indiana Jones movie... Cue the music...
Because of inflation, if I could drive to other places(city for vacation), and if there would be safe parking lots, where I wouldn’t have to deal with crackheads, I would use these to save money, probably could save a good 900 - 1500 an trip and could squeeze out more weekend trips a year.

@rogerout8875 this is CNN's channel right you know the news but selling overpriced cars with a tent on top makes sense their viewers will have to actually live in them cause they can't afford a house
Bums and government moochers aren't going to buy a $3000 tent. It's too heavy to steal as well. Only yuppys can afford this. Hippys and surf bros prefer a camper or van.
If anything happened while camping in the middle of the night, YOU CAN’T just drive off. So for that reason alone, the roof top camping is just a bad idea.
Its not. If you get a hard top they fold away in about 2 minutes. And the situation where you are so desperate for those 2 minutes is rare enough to not warrant a huge consideration. Its like those people that just need to carry a rifle on their person at all times instead of just a handgun. Sure its possible that it might someday be needed but the most likely situation is that its not.
If you’re in a situation that’s so desperate that you’d just abandon a $3000 Hilleburg tent, then screw it, just likewise drive off immediately and let your $3000 rooftent gradually rip off and fly away lol
That means forget about all of the things that can be packed in the car, since that cargo area’s no longer available since it’s your sleeping quarters. And this thing is quite roomy, Kareem Abdul Jabbar could stretch out freely and not be cramped up, it’ll take quite a vehicle to match that space.

I am always wonder if RTT ladder support is strong enough to hold two ppl weight, at 4:37, his tent platform sunk when he climb in.
Any four season roof top tents?
Yes. Most of their canvas rtts are rated four season. But you will need to buy insulation if you are camping in below freezing temperatures.
I have been considering a rooftop tent, but the idea sort of looses my interest when talking 2-3 miles per gallon.
Get a truck and put it on top of the bed and it doesn't affect gas mileage. Works great for me.
Huge disadvantage is that you can’t set a base camp to return to, and explore the surrounding area. Tried them for hunting, and decided thay suck.
I’m not getting any audio with this video. 10:32 4:34
Yikes totally a Thule ad. The Nemo is so nice.

That thing is flapping away in a slight breeze, how do you sleep in it?
Not ideal for those who get up to pee in the night.
Anything on top of your vehicle will hurt gas mileage due to increased wind resistance.
This is exactly why I sold mine. Pee pee is a problem for a 68 year old. Lol
And its hard to climb into after a few to many beers and easy to fall off the ladder

Rock underneath your wheel?
How do you get the thing on and off the roof?
They clamp on to your rack or cross bars, normally 4 clamps and a 2 or 4 person lift to remove it from your vehicle.
