10:08 really interesting insight into the making of these videos/the idiosyncrasies of working with DCS to make these complex scenarios. I think it is as much an insight into Cap's personality as it is into how the videos are made though. He often mentions hours of work trying to get various things to run correctly. I have a hunch that this is as much about Cap's brain fixating on understanding the problem as it is about finding a solution. In this example he eventually just has the flight of F-16's despawn and a new one spawn in. He could have implemented this pretty quickly but he spent three hours trying to figure out WHY the F-16's kept blowing themselves up before doing it. A stubborn curiosity. Like most personality traits it can be either advantageous or disadvantageous depending on the circumstances. Cap's (and others who have this trait) stubborn drive to understand could lead him to keep working on something when others would have quit, leading him to solutions (maybe better solutions) others never would have attained. On the other hand he might also be inefficient, spending far to much time trying to figure out why something isn't working when he doesn't need to or where there isn't much hope of finding an answer anyway. The beauty of this type of variation in human traits is that a community might have both types of people working on a problem- one that will solve it quick and get things running again, and another who will keep working until the problem is thoroughly understood and can implement an even better solution down the road. This is one of the things that make humans so adaptable and successful as a species. We have very complex variation in how we think and this means that more often than not we have a person/persons especially suited to take on any problem that arises.
8:43 The maximum speed of SM-6 has never been said to be mach4, calculated using simple rocket equation and the propellant mass of mk104 and mk72 motor the maximum speed of sm6 is easily over mach6 even when launched from sea level. Wikipedia is always the last thing to use as a reference when it comes to military stuff.
@@apolloaero the US Navy has specifications in it....the manufacture Raytheon RX has some of the specifications....well how fast is 1.03 km/s? I stink at math....😫
The SM-6 missile does not have to use all it's fuel for boost-only, so for reaching max possible speed. The SM-2/SM-3 airframe most probably has restrictions that not allow it a hypersonic flight (think of things like melting the nosecones and fins, exceeding temperature limits for airframe and so on). Most likely it boosts to about Mach 3.5-4 and uses the remaining fuel either for sustaining thrust or for a second impulse after some time - in the interception phase or just to extend the range. Maybe the massive booster propels it to designed cruise speed and the whole main missile rocket engine is configured for long sustain, or a multiple impulse work. For an air launch most likely the booster would not be used, only the main missile body and engine. 22:19 22:20 22:21
Hey Cap! I have a video idea for you. I love the videos when your humans don't know the entire situation. So I was thinking of you giving a group of humans a certain objective and having them decide what assests they want to use. And you as the other side. They will have access to small amounts of intelligence and have to use that to build an attack around that. Hope that makes sense cheers Cap! Also thank you for the videos I hope someday I will get a DCS set-up and maybe get to play with y'all someday!
i think this might be more feasible now with the Olympus mod. it would be a great video (i believe they're doing something kinda like this, but figuring out how)
hey cap! really cool video! thanks for all the effort you put into these. I have a battle suggestion: With trouble brewing in Venezuela, would be really cool to see a battle between Venezuela's Su-30's vs Brazil's Gripens
I think you got the whole approach to this the wrong way. If you are going to emulate an Ukrainian version of a Kinzhal strike, you should go the whole way. Use MiG-25's and convert them to fire ATACMS like SU-24's are firing Storm Shadows/SCALP's. The MiG-29's/F-16's can fire the SM-6's as decoys since the MALD's that you are using are just simply too slow.
Well you at least proved the concept of launching those darts by air. Nicely done. Next, I wonder if you would do a similar mission but with F35 support for SEAD? I bet that would get through.
please consider all as entertainment purposes, not it's "military accurate" because not even DCS itself is. point is to have fun within a scenario "based in reality"
I have long wanted you to do an air-launched SM-6 video. But I'd like to see you use it with a modern us navy airwing, versus a near peer rival, against their aircraft and ships.
@@gundamator4709well for one, sm6 isn't designed to be difficult to intercept because it is itself an interceptor. Secondly, ships have multiple radars located all over, on modern vessels they're located on different sides of the ships. Even if you could get an sm6 to hit a ship's radar directly, that's far from taking it out of the fight. The reason we dont do this is because if you can get an SM6 through, you can get an actual antiship missile through and ships need those sm6's for defense.
@@92HazelMocha As the US Navy has specifically requested that the SM-6 have an anti surface capability, and has explored using the Standard Missile form factor for anti-surface warfare, and the fact they've been successfully used to attack surface ships for decades, would probably indicate you are wrong. Would it be a waste to use them versus a carrier? Probably. But if they are employed in combination with other dedicated anti-ship weapons, it might be what's needed to take down a very difficult target. Particularly if they are targeting masts and superstructure, because that's what their seeker would be able to see. I would not want to be on anything smaller than a carrier, if I was being attacked by a vessel that could strike me with SM-6.
UAF F16 would be old A/B variants so i doubt they can carry any state of the Art weapons and questinable is also that they know the exact locations of russian air defenses
Same mission with Paveway via drone targeting to enemy runway, to chainsaw into HARm or RTB into HARM to SM-6 with fighter screen till extract. I thought it was interesting that the Russian Data Link apparently was allowing SAM to fire without local ground radar suggesting use of Cluster.
This was cool. I'm still waiting for you to do my request of doing a mission from the end of the iron eagle movie 😆. I know it takes a while to set these things up but it will be really cool if you get a chance to do it.
It would be cool to see some very realistic scenarios for Ukraine, in terms of number of aircraft and ground defense of each type, and relative location base on what is known via currently public info. Simulated strike on the Kerch bridge, etc. With weapons they are known to have access to or be sent.
Doesn't the SM-6 have a 370 km range at least? Or is that only when it does surface to surface? Ik the SM-2ER had a 370 km range when it got upgraded, and it had the same set-up as the current SM-6 with the booster.
I don't know how I would go about requesting something, but I have seen this SM-6 picture before as well as the articles about air launching the AMRAMM-ER (from the NASAMS 3) and comparing these to the AIM260 you guys have modeled. My limited understanding is that the AIM260 is designed around the form factor of a AIM120 so that internal stowage for F22s and F35s will not decrease missile count BUT there were other long range missiles under design and development that were larger and heavier that were not limited by such constraints. You guys have done a lot of work with NASAMS 3 and the AMRAAM ER, AIM260 and the SM-6 and I was wondering if it were possible to bolt all three of these to an F15 EX and compare and contrast them regarding range, speed, terminal kinematics, etc... Thank you for your time sirs!
Why didn’t Ukraine just launch the sm6 from safely inside its borders? It’s 300 miles from the border to Moscow? Not that there’s any need for this scenario since the cheap drones hit Moscow just fine.
I hope you know that those cheap drones, you probably heard in your propaganda about, are launched from inside Russia few kilometers away from their target?
@@blademaster2390Ever heard of Pro-Ukrainian partisans? There are some inside Russia that launch attacks from within Russia with cheap, crappy drones. Do you honestly believe that any drone would make it all the way to Moscow without ever being detected? Moscow is surrounded by EWR and EW equipment, and it’s foolish to suggest any drone would make it 300 miles to Moscow without ever being intercepted by something.
@@testgame2742It is true, actually. No drone would make it 300 miles to Moscow without ever being detected. Moscow is saturated in EWR and EW equipment, along with plenty of SHORAD.
The SM-6 just isnt designed for tactical SEAD missions. Its designed to intercept incoming threats, mainly aircraft, but also missiles, and also has the added capability of striking a surface target. However, its not a stealth missile, and it doesn't have any onboard EW suites to help it get past interceptor missiles. It makes up for this by being insanely accurate (crazy good seeker), maneuverable, and pretty much immune to jamming. So its best used against softened targets that are not defended by interceptors, or are only lightly defended. An air launched SM-6 wouldnt really be an SM-6 anymore. It would be fundamentally redesigned with onboard EW suites, a low observability profile, and probably a dual-stage platform. It would just be a supersonic JASSM or LRASM with less stealth and longer range. Which we dont really need... because the JASSM already has massive range and is stealthy, and the LRASM is designed for ships. And both of them work incredibly well. Im sure the Navy fooled around with SM-6 on aircraft as a way to test whether it was viable to use aircraft loaded with SM-6 interceptors as an extra layer of defense against incoming missile threats. I can see their idea being to stick a couple SM-6's on Carrier Group patrol aircraft, and have them in thr air so that if a threat is detected, the aircraft can fly out to and engage the threat themselves before it enters the carrier groups attack envelope.
I have the sneaking suspicion that the SM/F-15 flight was a concept test for ballistic/semiballistic missile interception using something else. Such as a stealthy, high-endurance platform whose networked sensor capabilities have been repeatedly brought up as a plus.
Thanks CAP for this specific mission. Cause Ukraine is now asking for F-18s. They are not approved yet but we are expecting they will be approved. As of now it's just the F-16s and Gripens! The Gripen side is very much a hush hush, but they will be coming around the same time as the F-16.
you send in SM6 as a HARM and drain the defense with something like Stormshadow's or the US Stealth cruise missle coming in behind after in a staggered time on target attack before the defence can reload
Cap, would it be possible to use the decoys to present as a flight or wing of strike aircraft [B1b? F-15? has to be some high danger/risk level aircraft] and cause the enemy to scramble their aircraft early and waste their fuel hunting down the decoys and then send the real attack in once the enemy can no long afford to engage due to low fuel? Those decoys can present as all sorts of aircraft on enemy radar, right?
I believe there are serveral new classified weapons with this ability. Also several different development programs for decoy missles/drones that can project several contacts. Even a tow behind radar decoy for anti missle capabilities. Again I have only heard of these being in development and not heard of such weapons being used ect ect ect. But yes you could deploy another group to come from another direction to pull attention away.
Doesn't matter what the Ukrainian F-16 fires at the Russians. If air defense systems are present, which depending on the target chosen they may or may not be, is what will decide. The effectiveness of S-400, S-300V4, Buk-M3, Tor-M2U and Pantsir is extremely high and WILL intercept it if on location and active.
That seppuku bug sounds as though DCS thinks the missiles are still attached to the aircraft, so when the SM-6s get intercepted and destroyed it's taking the plane with it.

the Standard missile started out as Tartar RIM-66, during Vietnam they developed the air launched AGM78 Standard ARM anti radiation missle en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-78_Standard_ARM
It likely wouldnt since the SM-6 is ludicrously expensive, but the "Standard" series of missiles (SM-1, SM-2, SM-3 and SM-6) has been used as the basis of an anti-radiation missile. Look up up the AGM-78 Standard ARM.
Isn't the essm a sparrow variant? I don't know the history of the sea sparrow. Damn I should probably Google that but speculating is so much more fun because when you're right it makes you look smart. Run on sentences don't, however.
@@phoenixrising4073 Eh, not really. The initial ESSM variant, Block I, mated the Sea Sparrow guidance section to a completely new 10" diameter rocket motor, but Block II now replaces that with a new guidance section that adds ARH and is now also 10" in diameter, making it uniform with the rest of the missile body. Block II has virtually nothing left in common with the legacy Sea Sparrow, other than retaining SARH homing.
Growling Sidewinder and Longshot have shown time and time again how American produced aircraft are cannon fodder to Russia's high tech AA missiles, namely the R-37M. Hypersonic, twice the range and supermaneuverable and cant be avoided... at incredible speeds. No way F-16's could get close to Russian borders with Russian MIG-31's looking on. Also, too...The S-400 Russian tech FAR surpasses anything ever developed by paltry western science. /s yo
@@up4open Kid, Russia never talked about any kind of time line, Was always the NATO idiots and you social media Nazis. You fall for your own propaganda.
Doing so would risk mass carpet bombings and the plausibility of tactical nuclear warheads being deployed. Aside from this being a fantasy (i.e. never going to happen) Russia will further escalate if Moscow is ever hit.
who is saying they might not get the F16?. the once promised they will get. additional Denmark is going to sell some additional F16's to Argentina. which is very weird since US has plenty they could sell themself, instead of asking Denmark to sell some. but I guess that's geo politics beyond what we are privy to know. US is ofcause trying to reduce China's influence in South America, they don't want to see chine's figthers sold to Argentina basically.
Cap, have a cuppa chamomile, breathe buddy, breathe 😅 Were they ever gonna beat S400? Nah, but they'd've given the kremlin something to think about. Rent free in Putins head? Priceless. Nice fight yall
Interesting mission..the Army can now launch SM 6 from the mobile launchers now...and America's new Precision Strike Missile is being delivere to the Army..👉 I didnt know the Navy put them in the F/A 18.....China better be watching....👉🏻
@@grimreapers Wikipedia isn't the most resourceful. As of now, nobody can gain any truthful outlook on how good Moscow defenses are. I assume they would be great though.
Very interesting concept and scenario, but it’s highly unlikely such an attack would be attempted. The risk of political and military escalation would be too risky to perform.
Appreciate the support, but I did reverse east and west in my head, but then I realized I did not have the fuel to run burner away from the 35's, had 3 sticks left and thought I could buy us some separation by turning them cold.
The Ukraine Air Force are getting the F16 as they have been training their pilots in the states then they will return to Ukraine and they will be getting a few A10-Thunderbolts.
2 should do for today? Add what is supposed to be there a least make it realistic it feels like you're trying to give the ukrainians a way to win by limiting the Russian strength bruh just make the video correct please
Yes , Russia has a lot of assets, but unless you haven't been paying attention, a lot of it isn't working or not working well. Small numbers of drones, missiles, RC boats, whatever, continue to get through to ships in port, bridges, command centers, even Moscow itself. Your settings of expert aces, SAMs; whatever, does not reflect reality. Russia does not always have an AWACs up.

Mach 3.5
@willwozniak2826 shutup and go back to your cubicle.
What equation do you use? I'm genuinely curious, and how accurate is it?
Also thank you for the videos I hope someday I will get a DCS set-up and maybe get to play with y'all someday!
i think this might be more feasible now with the Olympus mod. it would be a great video (i believe they're doing something kinda like this, but figuring out how)
It would be very interesting to see this VS the PL-17 in air to air. When launched from 30k feet at mach 1 I think it would get a huge boost in range.
Just seen GR got a credit in "Task & Purpose" for your JDAM work!
That’s awesome!

hey cap! really cool video! thanks for all the effort you put into these.
I have a battle suggestion: With trouble brewing in Venezuela, would be really cool to see a battle between Venezuela's Su-30's vs Brazil's Gripens
Cool Mission!
I live in Michigan too Dark----Love watching all of the fun stuff y'all do.
Thanks, Grim Reapers.
I’d love you try the same mission with the F15EX & then with the F35 too see which one can get the job done
Ukraine will never get F15s or F35s
Well you at least proved the concept of launching those darts by air. Nicely done. Next, I wonder if you would do a similar mission but with F35 support for SEAD? I bet that would get through.
If it’s Moscow that’s being attacked, I’d have assumed pantsir and s350 sites would have also been integrated as well into their defense?!
They do.
Obviously.
Also: you don't want to see the answer...
please consider all as entertainment purposes, not it's "military accurate" because not even DCS itself is. point is to have fun within a scenario "based in reality"
I have long wanted you to do an air-launched SM-6 video. But I'd like to see you use it with a modern us navy airwing, versus a near peer rival, against their aircraft and ships.
Sm6 is a blast frag warhead, it won't do any serious damage to any sizable naval vessel.
@@92HazelMochatake out the radars and put the vessel out of action.
Interesting mission! super!!!
Please do air launched SM-6 on the B-1R
It doesn't fit, I believe the bays are too short, same with F-35 bays.

@@foshizzlfizzlthats simply not true. The beaver has the range. Problem is it costs 250k and moscow is full of ew assets
@@foshizzlfizzlso…you’re saying Ukraine has forces within a few kilometers of Moscow and Russia cant deal with them?
Just making sure you know, the capital of Ukraine is spelt Kyiv. It may seem like a minor change, but it's important to a lot of people.
Hi Cap, have you seen the new PL-17? It would be cool to see a wargames episode including it

you send in SM6 as a HARM and drain the defense with something like Stormshadow's or the US Stealth cruise missle coming in behind after in a staggered time on target attack before the defence can reload
Moscow got hundreds of air defense systems. Good luck draining these.
Hey cap, is there any way those SM-6's can be mounted in a B-21's Bomb bay? And if so, how effective would they be?
Or a B1-R
Unlikely, B21 is just too small
@@dexlab7539 What About a B-1 lancer?
yes
SM-6 is a big ol' chonker when you strap it to an aircraft.
