  • We had a random 2 days in December in the 50s, so there was precisely a 0% chance that I wasn't going to take that opportunity to try out the new mower on the putting green. Results were truly unbelievable. I'm going to have a legitimately nice green next year and that's beyond exciting.

    You are a nut! I love it. Of course I'm walking on a treadmill and watching a guy in Wisconsin reel mow his lawn in December. 😃

    Your an doing the right thing to spend that kind of money on a mower to do a putting green. Do something for your family. Spend time with your family. Young people these days.

    Hey Jason, thanks for the videos on the Jacobsen. I bought one on eBay and got it working . . . mostly. One thing makes it impossible to use in my garden and that is that I cannot pull back the mower. For example, I mow up to a hard straight edge (like a path or border) and want to turn around and go back; there is no space to do a U turn ahead of me, so with other reel mowers I can simply pull back (the rollers freewheel backwards), swing to the left or right, go forward a step, pull back again, and then off I go back the same way with a new stripe. I noticed in your video that you just do U turns! Short of disengaging the drive completely on the LHS and then engaging it (way too complicated), there seems to be no backwards freewheel. My one question: is that just how Jacobsen 500s are or is there a one-way bearing or sprag clutch somewhere that is seized up?

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  Год назад

      Thats every greensmower since the drive and reel are locked together. I can pull back a little, but generally don't. You could play with loosening the reel to bedknife a bit to free that pull back up. But, generally you just have to be in the right spot when you spin around as they are very difficult to move with your own power.

      @@JasonSeiberlich Thanks for clarifying! Seems daft to me! I will have to put it back on eBay!

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  Год назад

      @@dickpowell9457 it ensures clip rate is exactly what it should be. Use it often enough and you'll figure out the turn. But, greensmowers are certainly not for everyone nor every situation.

    • @dickpowell9457
      @dickpowell9457 Год назад

      @@JasonSeiberlich I see what you say for when you're going forwards, but that need not interfere with an ability to pull backwards. A sprag clutch within the main drive pulley would do it. Hell, they put them in the the transport wheels to allow pull back! Anyway, it's for my garden and I bought something engineered for a different purpose - silly me!

    What kind of grass is that? A patch of bentgrass?lol.. Or how did you train that grass(name here) so low... Do you topdress? How deep are the roots? Ever seen hydrophobic sand or soil... If your green doesn't drain with pea gravel, sand, clear drainage and fertility, sunlight to burn off moisture before shady time when will and desease set in if the wind won't blow dry it... Cool stuff nifty!

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  3 года назад +1

      I had bentgrass in my backyard causing me problems so I decided to do this. Top dressed 5 times so far. No issues with water or drainage. I do a monthly disease preventative. Some basic info on getting started with this and what I've done in the link below.

    Ok man.... Question. I bought a used Mclane reel mower... But I'm reading that it only cuts down to 1/4" ..... Also reading greens are at .125" .... Looks like I need a greens mower to get that close cut for putting.... Right?

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  3 года назад +1

      Depends on how true to form you want to be. I was chipping and putting on 3/8. It's slow, but it does work. Grab the cheapest roller you can find on marketplace or wherever and it's not bad. But, if you want to the real thing, there's probably no alternative to greens mower.

    • @BermudaBrian
      @BermudaBrian 3 года назад

      ok... So 1/4 "could" work? Just to play around w? I would just be slow? I was going to get a grooved roller... But I bet a green would need the solid surface roller?

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  3 года назад +1

      This video the mower was set to a quarter inch and it rolled really well. Certainly not going to be a 10+ on the stimp meter but it will absolutely work for something in your yard to just have fun with. Everything I've seen is grooved front roller to ensure cutting as short as possible without laying the grass over.
