Heeey all :) I didn't really tell you places we rode to or through - blame the lack of sleep. But here's the ride: www.strava.com/activities/7066435048. Let me know if I rode near where any of you live :)
Manchester > Glossop > Hathersage > Dronfield > Bolsover > Retford > Misterton > HUMBER BRIDGE BABBBBY > Kirton in Lindsey > Gainsborough > Bolsover :)
Yep!! Originally from near Dronfield, now not far from Humber Bridge!! Howden though, so you didn’t pass today. Looks like another cracking ride, while I’ve been working. Someone has to keep the country running 😜
@@roadcyclingchannel1529 Didn't realise Hull was down south. ..
That's a "bit lumpy" some of those climbs looked steeper than you let on.
This is what I was wondering about, if you ride to an Audax (eg 300 kms) event's start and ride home (50 kms each way) then can you expand that ride into a 400k Audax ride to get more points?
There is a real magic about starting off in the dark and watching the sun rise. Loved the shots you took of the light slowly starting to push through and finally that real special sunrise. Epic x
It was GLORIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love riding at that time in the morning it's like you got the world to yourself
I always have Richard Hawley song Streets Are Ours 🥰🥰🥰
Beautiful!
... These moments of riding into the new day's beginning..
Beautiful!
Thank u so much 4 sharing.
It is inspiring.
Setting out on the bike early morning has big advantages as in very little traffic and noise. The downside is that it can be quite cold and you need more clothing until hopefully the temperature rises later on. I applaud anyone who motivates themselves getting up very early and getting out there. I used to travel to work for 21 years most days on my bike even though I have a car I started at 6am so left my house every morning at 4.30am to travel the 12 mile distance in all weathers. I only stopped when I left that particular job. I was 36 years of age when I started and 57 years of age when I stopped. I got diagnosed four years ago with an under active thyroid so feel the cold a lot more now and probably my age too but I still get out very early from time to time just need an extra couple of base layers. Well done Katie.
Love it up above Hathersage and around surprise view. Always scares me a little getting up that road up there
It’s a beautiful thing watching you and your daddy riding together! Take care Katie
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you remembered!!
I lived in the Hope Valley for 52 years, so you passed through my old stomping ground. I now live between Barnsley and Doncaster. I'll take a closer look at the route you took and might try the Humber Bridge myself. Cheers, Katie.
Absolutely excellent as always....Get out to the fens for some very windy open landscapes with no hills ? Could be a test for you for a laugh....
I love the peace and quiet, I want the roads or the countryside belongs to me, more chillaxing.
Those cold alone times on your bike when you question your sanity! Your willpower inspires more than you know. Right on, sis.
Yeah you think why don't i take up a team sport or do a Park run haha. Not so bad if your solo touring or meeting up with another rider or more.
THANK YOU 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Hi Katie l like sometimes starting early the cold is no good but you keep going love too be there looks good the countryside you are doing some good miles you must getting fit take care my dear
Cheers Darren 😎
@@KatieKookaburra thanks Katie have a good weekend
Left hand sunscreen, right hand chamois cream was what i had to remember on a warm long distance ride!
I did the flat 100 in Doncaster and it was boring and quite tough, constant spinning of the legs for just under 7 hrs. No reprieve from peddling and no downhills. Well done
Katie this is what i was talking about in my comments on your previous video of London to Manchester. You're at it again on this trip with all that adventure and excitement stuff! You've got to find a way whereby your trips can be more inclusive and us mere mortals can just get a taster of what you seem to be bagging all for yourself.
Hahaha right let’s do some group rides this year, yeah???
Well thats one way Katie, but all that would do is just bring a group of strong riders together who can keep up with you. I think you should look at something more spontaneous whereby people can just drop in and drop out at various stages on some of your rides. So for example if people would have known in advance that you would have been hitting Long Hill on your way back from London, I think quite a few would have turned out to support you (not that you needed it), but moreso to experience the adventure. Some would have dropped off at Whaley and headed back to Buxton, some might of stayed on to Marple Bridge for example, but you can get the idea. What im trying to say is that there is a magic in what you are doing and people would love to experience even a couple if miles of it. I dont know how it could be done but i know i would have rode up the Snake from Glossop with you and then tailed off to Bamford station to get the train back to Stockport. What a way to start the day!
Cracking ride Katie well done to you all. Nice sunrise
Nearest Peak District to me is Ashbourne. Regularly get up at 4am - drive up there and then get a nice 4+ hours in. Always sad to leave! Hopefully live there one day.....
Jase get yasen there!! Bloody lovely :)
‘I’ve just seen a hill… whoop whoop’… words I have never ever uttered in 2 years of cycling lol 😂
🤣🤣🤣🙈
Early morning ride to work on the dark is great leave at 3am for a 3:50 start best time of the day especially when dawn break later in the summer
We do the Clumber /Misterton loop quite often, there’s a wonderfull cafe in Misterton called The Pantry, extremely bike friendly.
Hi Katie, brill vid and ride, as always. For cold feet you need some Galibier Fire Feet 2 socks they are wonderful, I've never had cold feet since getting some of those but, that said, I don't think I've been out in -2 conditions. Worth trying the socks though x
Aye up, me duck! Katie, always so nice to see your videos such that you seem almost like family. You did not pass close to Washington, DC. We are only 164 miles from home on the Great American ride. Blue skies, little wind, 70F. Life is beautiful as are you.
Len!!!!! Awwww I always know I’m close to home when I hear people calling me ‘duck’ 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
Sadly not close to you this ride. One day Len!! :)
My wife can relate to biking early in the morning with 4 layers including a puffer jacket on top. I took her on a mtb ride at 1 degree in New Zealand.
I did a 300km Audax a 10 days ago, getting up at 2h45 for a 4h00 start was one of the hardest bits ! Riding in the dark at least meant that we didn't see all the electricity pylons at the beginning and we did get a lovely sunrise although it was more the type "mist over the fields" than a spectacular hill view !
I will trade you snow for early morning ride !! Lol. I can not believe my weather!! I moved to the mtns for peace and quiet and great riding but have not got that yet this year! Great video!! I hate cold feet..!
Your face eating that bagel is a classic! Well done katie ❤️
🤣🤣🤣🤣🙈🙈🙈
So nice video, greetings from your fan in Argentina!!!
Derbyshire is great but it's flattish in the south part around Burton. I've got family in Staffs, Worcester and Derbyshire.
Coldest I been out in -23c. Only did 10k. Had to turn round and head back home. Everything was frozen.
You are a machine Katie. The videos are great. Ride on 👊
Awwww Tim, cheers :)
You ever think about doing the Great American rail trail across the US? Myself I am planning on setting out next spring.
I’ve not heard of it before…. Will have a search :) enjoy!!!
Awesome ride. Absolutely love the UK countryside.
You rode past my mum and dad’s house in West Stockwith☺️
All round my neck of the woods, that. I work in Retford and Worksop, and drive that Eaton, Gamston road regularly. One of my big concerns about entering events is precisely what you found so boring, the area is flat as a pancake, so I always worry I won’t be fit enough riding somewhere else. Great to keep seeing you round these parts though☺️
A dip into the “flat lands” of Lincolnshire, that’s a change for you, it didn’t look very windy so you were lucky. If one of your events is the LEL you’ll be going through the proper flat lands of the fens have a look at what the participants of the 2017 event thought of it, the wind really was blowing.
It was a change - and I found it tough! Haha. Good guess but LEL isn’t one of them…. 😎😎😎
Great vids, very motivating 👌. Keep up the good work. Do you have any reflectors at all just wondering
Starting at O dark-thirty is a great way to beat the heat of summer which will be soon upon us. (and no more frozen toes) 😉 I'd rather be cold than hot. I wilt like a flower,
I would rather be hot :) I freeze like a ⛄️
Very well done. Don't overdo it though with these long long rides.
Good you feel better after that accident 🤗 Keep cycling Katie and in safe distance please
Luv your determination and grit Katie.👏🏻👏🏻.It’s very inspiring and infectious ..Thank you 👍🏻
Thanks Dave! I think some people call it stubbornness too 🤣🤣
I love this woman she's so determined and single minded and I'm totally with her on those rides it's what I do but on a MTB and track's, it's about being at one with your bike and the environment.
Richard… why thank you good chap!! We are the same that’s EXACTLY it :)
You...are...insane! But in a really good way. Godspeed!
Hi Katie, thanks for all of these tips. Im going to get that slupstream stuff for sure. Do you have any video covering shorts for entry level /beginners? I could not spend the money on the ones you have that i heard your reccommend- audax ones (>£200).
Im going to test some cheaper ones out for for :) I did test some £5 ones so have a search for that one :)
You, your Bike & your Helmet being Teammates with each other as you ride your Bike to keep your Bike & your Helmet as your Teammates!
Hi Katie, love your vids, well done. Please tell me what glasses you're wearing on this ride and whether you recommend them as I need something. Many thanks. Richard
They are Oakley Jawbreaker with photochromic lenses and they are awesome!!!!!!
@@KatieKookaburra Many thanks but yikes not cheap!!
Hey Katie the van over your left look at the roofs they look like a arrow point to the van 😂😂😂😂(4:18) on your vid sorry I’m sad but couldn’t help myself
Great video as always Katie, very dedicated getting up that early. Can you please remind what the jacket is that you are wearing?
Patagonia Micro Puff
@@KatieKookaburra thank you 😊
I live in North Lincolnshire and that hill you were pleased about seeing is genuinely one of the biggest hills near where I live 🤣
I remember it feeling absolutely massive when I first started cycling 😀
However, living in a flat area makes trips to the more hilly areas even more special
Ooooh I loved it! Such a treat that climb! You did awesome. But I have the same / just shows we are building up them climbing legs
U have to have the rain b4 rainbow it looked so amazing so jealous well done skinny k x
I could not recommend proper winter boots over shoes & ‘over’ shoes, I bought cheap ones from Planet X & honesty they changed my perspective of winter riding. A nice pair of Alpaca wool socks (super warm), coupled with the boots, I’d never go back to shoes & overs.
Is snake pass open to traffic again? That’s the quietest I think I’ve ever seen it.
I have them and love them too but I knew the weather was getting to around 18C in the day - so it was a debate of what to wear ha :) thanks so much though
A perfect example of the grand difference of liking cycling, and loving cycling. I believe Katie falls under the second one ...
Wouldn't you folks agree. 🚲
Hi Katie! Where are your cycling sunglasses from?
I've found a solution for the cold feet problem... the activated charcoal foot warmers you can get for skiing, they last about 5hours or so.
Love those Derbyshire Peak District views at sunrise ... magic! Crisp butty ... might have to add them to my endurance ride food list! Ta very much!
Another great video - thank you. What is the Patagonia jacket you are wearing - I need something like that that packs down!!
Micro Puff 👌🏼😎😍
@@KatieKookaburra brill - thank you!!
@@KatieKookaburra many thanks
Another great video, Katie! Re the cold feet, have you tried bootees or shoe covers or whatever they're called over there?
That sunrise 🤩
Oh my gawwwwwwsh it was LUSH!!!!!!! Worth blocks of ice for feet to see that!!
Well traffic isn't a problem at that hour. That is SERIOUSLY hard core LOL! Chips on a hot dog bun is innovative!
Hahahah them hot dog cobs were SUMMAT ELSE! Blooody glorious with some square crisps on. And that time of day with no cars is just BLISS!!!!
@@KatieKookaburra I'll freaking bet that's good LOL! Another recipe item for bikers! And I've done way early morning biking, and it's fun to sneak up on the wildlife--lots of foxes are shocked when a cyclist shows up at those hours. Rawk on dudette.
Another great ride. I’ve got to say your distance riding is pretty inspirational. If anyone can confirm you are wearing Oakley photo chromatic jawbreakers? I’ve been wanting to get a set but just haven’t committed for those early morning rides. Keep doing those kms.
Thank you!! And yes they are the glasses! :)
Hi Katie ,
wish i could wake up at 3am to do a ride. I can't get up earlier that 6:15 am.
Any how...can i ask which brand is your glasses? Are these the Oakley Jawbreaker? And what lens do you use?
All I could think of at the start of your video, was what brand of down jacket are you wearing at the start and how on earth do you keep it clean as surely you must cook and cannot get it clean afterwards !?
It’s the most AMAZING jacket. It’s not down - it’s synthetic and you can pop it in the wash. Patagonia micro puff
You dnt seem to have done a video on the new ribble bike and what colour you went with
Soon :)
Good grief, you are a biking monster!!! Very impressive, go you! 😬
Thank you for the inspirational video Katie.
Slightly random question this , what brand of goggles are you wearing ?
I am trying to get some decent eye protection ; I don't find glasses particularly good at keeping debris out of my eyes.
I apologise if it's a question you have already answered but I have only just subscribed to your channel.
Oakley Jawbreaker 👌🏼
@@KatieKookaburra Seeing the morning transition on the photochromatic lens was cool. I have a pair in the mail that I'm excited about.
May I ask what brand/type are your photochromatic glasses?
An absolute machine KK 😮👏❤️
its the best sport cycling, thank you very much for your videos,im a great fan of cycling too,but never rode at 3 am😄
Great ride Katie - I recently moved to Hull, you're so right about how flat the area is! Any tips on how to do such an early start? I've got a 60km run planned as some Parkrun tourism on Saturday, requiring a 2:30am start - will be by far my earliest start!
Wow…. Running 60km?!!!!!!!
I would say bank up your sleep leading up to it - so make sure you are getting early nights for as long as possible before it :)
Also if it’s for parkrun just knowing you will be done by 9.30am you can sleep rest of the day :)
@@KatieKookaburra That's a great point, early nights then this week! And you're right about the relatively early finish - I'll be getting the train back (only costs 95p!) and hopefully home by 10:45am. Fingers crossed I get a sunrise as epic as yours
Hi. What brand and model are those glasses ? They look brilliant.
Oakley :)
Hi Katie - who makes your glasses? Look fab!
Oakley Jawbreaker Photochromic
@@KatieKookaburra Cheers!
I'm in Lincoln so you were fairly near to me! Thanks for sharing your rides with us and taking the time to film, it is appreciated. Always enjoyable to watch. Are you still waiting for your new bike?
Awww we brushed past you then :) no worries thanks so much for coming with me on these rides. Proper feel like you are all there with me in spirit haha. The new bike…. Nope… the wait is over 😋🥳🥳🥳🥳
Hi
Inspiring stuff!
What cycling eyewear were you using?
Seemed to darken as it became lighter.
Oakley :)
@@KatieKookaburra Thankyou for the prompt response
Love early morning rides and watching the world wake up and come to life.
However, living in Western Australia I wouldn’t be riding across the country no matter how early I got up.
That's how u do an audax, you ride there, then do the audax, and then ride back 😎
night cycling is the best relax for me
Plastic bags over your socks, 60's trick when out training in West London at night. Bit warmer there though.
What glasses do you wear? Did you change lenses?
Blimmin' eck! Your legs must be on fire! You're just smashing the miles!!
The legs are feeling preeeeeeety good :) thanks so much :)
I'm new to your channel and I love the content,. Amazing stuff,.!
Keep it up 👍🏻😎
Heeeey Nick! Great to have you here - thanks so much :) any questions at any point ask away. I might not know the answer but will try and help :) hope you’re well
@@KatieKookaburra no questions at the moment, I'm currently in the process of switching from mountain bike to road bike, it's all new to me and seems very expensive (not that mountain biking isn't) but just finding my feet! 👍🏻😎 And I'm very well thank you, I hope you are too! X
Often wanted to do something similar and ride a hilly course home from work but the boss basically said if I tried stashing my bike at work to do it I’d be in trouble. Also have to contend with the “Walking dead” that are out that time of morning along with us overnight workers. Still sorely tempted after seeing that sunrise!
Tell your boss to join you! :) I was lucky I used to be able to keep my bike next to my desk when I was a journo. Well most of the time anyways
Ride by HH..And film a little of it that would be awesome for me to see!! And my Name is Michael!! Nice to meet you Katie!!
Those crisps in bread are the most British thing I have seen in a while together with Boris Johnson's haircut.
🤣🤣 but crisp sandwiches are nice :)
@@KatieKookaburra In my country, we put chips in bread but no crisps even though... we say "chips" for "crisps". So, no hard judgment :-)
I enjoyed that so much. Thank You.
Any plans to do the 300km King Alfred Way challenge (gravel required I think)?
It’s years since I’ve felt motivated to have a big cycling goal, I miss it.
3am… that’s yesterday 😂. I will happily do a 5am start.. anything earlier…. Noooooo
I mean it as a compliment but I think you are nuts. And totally admirable. But you've been doing this regularly and for a long time which is why, imo, you can do these high miles. Nuts for getting up at 3 am to ride across the Moors. Admirable because you aren't phased by it at all. Keep on being nuts.
New to your channel, you have my respect 💪 what's your average speed
Hey Katie, am looking to cycle from Consett to Colchester which is around 470km in July which will involve some night time riding (first time). Your channel and enthusiasm has made me want to try it. Could I ask what type of front light you use?
Heeeey! That sounds an EPIC ride!! I have an Exposure Strada and Trace / Trace R as back ups :) oh and the Blaze for the back. They are pricey but the battery and light from them are UNREAL! Really great products!!!!
@@KatieKookaburra thank you Katie for getting back to me so quick. Will give these a look. Hopefully I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew. Hopefully 2 days is enough or should I say 2 weeks ha ha.
Hey Katie, great ride. Just wondering what glasses you are using and are they light changing/ photocromatic? They seem a really good shape
Oakley jawbreaker
Katie, massive props for your efforts! This is a bit of a random one but do you ever get any aches or pains? Or are you super comfortable on the bike, all day, on a long ride like this? Love the videos!
I think 'finish line' do a anti squeak cleat spray, but in an emergency I just rub the cleat in some grass !
Shoe covers or frostbites? Which one will it be? Greetings from Canada where it gets way colder than -2C
I had shoe covers on! :(
@@KatieKookaburra I find it odd that there are no heated pedals; it is a rotor already and spinning like crazy; add a roll of wire and a magnet and you have electric current. Small heater and conductor to shoe. Problem solved.
Danny Chew RAAM 2 Time Winner used to rate frozen feet aka Club Foot after winter riding in Pittsburgh " literally had to soak his frozen feet in a bucket of Cold Water to thaw them out!!"
Eating with a purpose :-) Love it.
YOU ARE AMAZING !!
When wind conditions get your attention, what speeds are we talking?
Ooof it depends esp if they are direct head or cross winds and how high up you are. But if I see anything more than around 15mph I generally think of staying in ha. But… I’ve gone out in stronger winds and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. So it’s not a clear cut answer I guess :)
What is better than riding at sunrise? Nothing!
You’re doing great darling 3am wow ❤
I like it a lot, to ride into sunrise 👍
Overshoes are a thing ! 😀 Is Audax is an eating competition ?
I had overshoes on 🙈😮🥺
