Hi Katie! About two weeks ago I did a solo ride across Florida and back, Clearwater to Titusville to Clearwater non stop (329.5 miles or 530 KM). I rode through the night without sleeping for two days. Oddly enough I wasn't suffering in the saddle nor was I ever tired. I was going for 400 miles but 70 miles from home at around 2AM, a cold front dropped the weather into 40's Fahrenheit. All I had to wear was my bibs and my lycra jersey and fingerless gloves. I didn't plan for that temperature, especially in late April, in Florida. I set my mind to do the ride and I almost found it easy to do. I suffered no contact point pain or sores. I have been doing some research on the mentality of an endurance rider to understand myself better. Friends and strangers thought I was crazy and most thought that I couldn't do it. TO be honest, part of what motivated was to prove them wrong. When I am in the saddle, I feel like I am in my element. Out of it is where I seem lost. Best thing though, I did it all on a whole food plant based diet plus coffee. 7 year Vegan here! You inspired me to ride longer and longer distances. Looking forward to the next big crazy thing you do, so I can copy you.🚲🚴♀️🚵♀️🤪
great story! I'm getting my first road bike tomorrow (Trek emonda SL5) to change my hybrid Giant rapid and I'm yet to ride my bike for 100 kms (can't talk in miles, don't know about them); I think I'll start with 50 k and then increase by 10 k every week. Vegan from southern France here! also inspired by Katie's videos but I feel like a beginner.
Wow.... I have been wanting to a coast to coast ride. How much of the cross Florida network were you able to use? I have no clue how you did coast to coast to coast incredible.
@@tomsmith3982 I think about 75% of the ride was on bike paths or trails. Some good and some bad. In the last few years the trails have improved across the state, building paths on former rail lines. I'm still trying to understand my mindset on doing extremely long endurance rides. I decide to do it and the mental aspect doesn't seem that hard. As a Marine veteran, I love to challenge myself and see how far I can push my limits. I have become more attuned my hydration and my nutrition. When I am on the bike, I am so happy and carefree. Hey Katie! Well done on your ride! You're so right about the up's and down's.. I also thought it was just me!! You've inspired me to cycle from Oxford to Cambridge and back... about 275k
One tip - always ignore a road closed sign, as usually the pavement is still open to walk the bike round (yes I rode through that village just north of MK on Wednesday too! My ride was considerably shorter though :) ).
Great tips on the mental side. It can translate over into ultra running too. We eat every hour, plus on the hills know where the streams are to refill & I usually divide the route into sections so we're only ever thinking about the next checkpoint.
You're awesome Katie, such an inspiration to keep pedalling! You're right about the state of mind being a major part. I'm 6'4 and 100kg and keeping fuelled up properly is so important. I used to try and do rides without eating to try and burn off excess fat but it just resulted in me bonking out. Love your vids, keep up the great work 😊
Did my first 300 by accident. Took my loaded touring bike 130k away, and wanted to sleep there for a overnighter. I went easy the whole time. But I was at my destination way too early. So I took a detour heading back, so I wouldn't have too much left the next day. But I kept going and wasn't satisfied until I came back home. It wasn't a success though, because I wanted to camp!
That road is 2 miles from the house and leads up to Althorp house, the resting place of Princess Diana. They are all around that area something to do with water clearance! Nice to see you come through (ps plenty of better roads than that one!)
What good news to hear from you. Many - as was I - must have been worried about your well being as it was over one week since your previous video. HAPPY to see you again. One day on my Florida ride was with a headwind of 40 mph for 17 miles. Give me a 5% incline for miles anytime.

Much of long-distance riding certainly mental. I think it's probably quite helpful to many people to know that everyone has a struggle at some time, so thanks for pointing that out for the riders doubting themselves. I'm glad you mentioned dates. I've been trying to come up with a joke, like "How about a date?" Just joshing with you! Here's my point. What are you doing on May 2nd? Some of my favorite musicians are going to be in your Manchester on the evening of the 2nd. They are called Larkin Poe, after their great, great, great grandfather Larkin Poe, a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe. They have a RUclips channel, too, so check them out, and maybe you'll want to go to their show. I wish they were coming somewhere near me, but no such luck.
Tri bars are definitely not over the top. I use them now, and wish I had them on the first 200 mile ride I did last summer. Not only do they allow for different positions, but the aero position saves energy too. I've seen quite a few ultra endurance riders with them. I love mine. Can't wait for my next 200 miler with them.
@@KatieKookaburra I just got a cheapy £20 pair off Facebook marketplace. If your bars are narrow then get some that are separate so you can adjust the width. You should have plenty of space on the outside of your normal bars if you get some with the smaller elbow pads. Yep it does take I while to get used to, I nearly came off on my first attempt. It's bloomin scary to begin with but now I'm speeding round corners with them 😐😂., and they feel so normal now. They helped me knock 7 mins off a 50 mile TT route I do, taking me from 19.5 mph average to 21mph. Very inspiring videos BTW 👌👍.

Also very excited to hear about your talk with Emily Chappell, hoping to be able to watch this! Do you know where it might be available?
Super tips as usual. London was the worst part of my 300K ride to London. Get some tri-bars. I'm not an expert but I feel they give you another position for those long rides so take the load off you hands/back.
G'day, Katie! Fantastic ride and great video! When you mentioned eating dates, it sparked my interest, because I love them but rarely bought them, because the Aussie ones are just SO expensive. However, recently I decided to try dates from Turkey - and they are DEEELISHUS!! I have carried a couple on my puny rides but I'll carry more, if and when I start doing something longer than 35 ks.
@@KatieKookaburra Thanks, but I live in a small, country town, where the Turkish ones are 'no-name' but I will check next time I buy some. YUM about covers it!
Well done so great.. I'm thinking of cycling from Leeds to reading..alot of it is along the canal. I have a hybrid bike..google maps tells me it will take me 25 hours. Which obviously I don't believe (I know will take longer) but I can't gauge whether we are talking 2 days or 5 days
@@KatieKookaburra so many too choose from I use the deda ones but they are abit fatter than other brands so can't really swap the extensions so I wouldn't get then again. Profile design or zipp maybe better more options to change extensions and risers etc, see if you can lend some try before you buy 😉

You need to update your Garmin or get in contact with them. I have a 830 and it lasts for hours, at least eight. Also, check the brightness settings. If you are riding in the light, you can turn down the brightness to the place wear the screen is barely visible.
@@jamesmckenzie3532 thanks, it’s updated to the latest version. I use it 3 times a week it’s on the low light and I even turn off Bluetooth and still only get less than 5hours navigation from it.
Amazing effort Katie, I saw it pop up on Strava and realised you'd cycled past the area where I was Mountain biking near Althorp, could have treated you to an Ice-cream on your travels 😃. Was the bad road in Northamptonshire by any chance?
Manchester to London ! Return journey on the train, on the spur of the moment, cost Andy Burnham £369.40 ! Bet there aren't many alpacas down in the Great noisey stressful London. Stay safe Katie ☀️ 🦙 🐑
Well done Katie, I just did my longest solo ride yesterday of 138km and it was really fine. Felt I could do more but will build it up over time I think. Just a question re your bag on the back of you bike, what brand is it? Well done again.
Pretty good I suppose. You likely spent half the time that I take I do 170 km on my 50 lb steel bike with a SA RD3. My best was double my age 133.6 miles on a 73 lb tour bike with a SA XL-RD5w, in 12.3 hours. Only 28 miles into a light wind. My first full day ride this year was 92 miles on the 3 speed. The warmup ride 4 days before was 49 miles I think, mostly slowly.
Great video, my question is how do you keep your bike safe stopping when travelling on your own? I hate carrying a heavy bike lock about but don't want to leave my bike out of site! Do you take it in the garage with you or have a small safe lock you use?

I’m showing a few clips in the next vid but it isn’t available in full anywhere I don’t think - you had to be there. X
Super tips as usual. London was the worst part of my 300K ride to London. Get some tri-bars. I'm not an expert but I feel they give you another position for those long rides so take the load off you hands/back.
You where so close to an amazing cafe in Melbourne, its called Melbourne Hall Tea Rooms.
Was looking forward to this :)
Enjoy :)
They are YUM! Try medjool and Halawi if you see them 😋😋
@@KatieKookaburra Thanks, but I live in a small, country town, where the Turkish ones are 'no-name' but I will check next time I buy some. YUM about covers it!
Awesome content ✊🏾💪🏾
Are there really cycling routes from mcr to ldn?
Great ride! 💪🏻
Cheeeeeeeers! :)
Any suggestions I'd love to know
Haha funny you say about tri bars I comment on a previous video asking why you don't use them when alot of endurance riders do 🤣🤣
Gaz… you were right!!! Which ones though???
@@KatieKookaburra so many too choose from I use the deda ones but they are abit fatter than other brands so can't really swap the extensions so I wouldn't get then again. Profile design or zipp maybe better more options to change extensions and risers etc, see if you can lend some try before you buy 😉
Awesome ,mega kudos 💪🍰👏
Great ride and videos 🙂👍🇨🇦
Fantastic video, tips and ride, thanks for sharing! Can you share some details about that talk in Rapha? I can't find any information online
Video on Weds 🙂🙂🙂
Such a long ride..look do fresh. Huge respect to you...👍🍺👍
Cheers Dave!
Awesome Ride Katie 🚴 your a cycling machine 🚴👍🚴♂️
Haha awwwww why thank you. I will remember this when I can’t be arsed to even ride to the shops ha!
@@KatieKookaburra Those days when you can't be bothered usually turn out to be a good ride. I've got the Fred Whitton Challenge in 2 weeks, my 4th time. You ever done it 🚴♂️🚴🚴♀️
Surely have - vid on my channel :)
hi Katie
great job
could u please give me some info about the packing for those destancies and how u planed the route...?
thank u
Hi Katie great tips and I’m also getting my head around doing a long ride for myself
Any chance on a video on how you plan your routes
Ive done a few - search 'planning' on my channel :)
Those last few miles when you get a second wind. Where was that energy an hour ago!
Ha I didn’t have a second wind in London. So much stop / starting :)
Oh, there she is! Milton Keynes?! You know I'm into F1 right? 😉This year is all about Maranello VS Milton Keynes. Hot stuff. Same for me, give me the countryside, nature and stuff, not cities. London is London though. Well done, as always, what a cyclist, you got two engines there, not two legs. Ciao Katie, I missed you.
Awwwww Chicco!!! 😌😌😌 thank you!!!!!!
Hi Katie
love your channel , bit of advice , doing big ben to rock of Gibraltar in october 1400 miles 13 days 52.000 feet of accent , 4 of us with support camper van , where do i start ? !!! 😳
cheers

Lol…Sponsored by VW. 😀…your amazing❤️
Hi Katie what Battery pack do you take as my garmin dies after about 75miles??
I have the Garmin 1030 plus and lasts so long. After this ride it still had 75% battery left. I use the battery save mode and it's GREAT!!!
You need to update your Garmin or get in contact with them. I have a 830 and it lasts for hours, at least eight. Also, check the brightness settings. If you are riding in the light, you can turn down the brightness to the place wear the screen is barely visible.
@@KatieKookaburra thanks I think I need to invest in one as I have the 1000 and the battery is a real let down…. 75% after Mcr/Ldn is very impressive.
There were a few haha! All south… 🙃
Manchester to London !
Return journey on the train, on the spur of the moment, cost Andy Burnham £369.40 !
Bet there aren't many alpacas down in the Great noisey stressful London.
Stay safe Katie ☀️ 🦙 🐑
Good stuff 👏
Well done Katie, I just did my longest solo ride yesterday of 138km and it was really fine. Felt I could do more but will build it up over time I think. Just a question re your bag on the back of you bike, what brand is it? Well done again.
I use Apidura bags but I took the Tailfin Aeropack on this ride as I needed trainers and regular clothes the day after
Pretty good I suppose.
Great 👍 I’m just scared that you’re not wearing any neon for visibility 😔
I had my lights going pretty much all day - but I thought the exact same thing so getting one of those high vis belt things!
Great Katie ❤️👌
what Oakley glasses are this? Looking sharp ;)
Cheers, Jawbreaker Photochromic 👌🏼😎
Hi Katie. Love your jacket. What kind of Patagonia is that? And what size? :)
Micro puff
Great video, my question is how do you keep your bike safe stopping when travelling on your own? I hate carrying a heavy bike lock about but don't want to leave my bike out of site! Do you take it in the garage with you or have a small safe lock you use?
Serious question, how do you cope with seating when riding longer ? I sweat then I am cold .
