So, Jon, in response to your question, I'm going to reference my favorite book in the bible: Esther. Specifically the part of the story when Esther goes into the kings inner court unannounced and uninvited, which was against the law and punishable by death. Now, in the Old Testament, the Jews accessed God through a high priest, as opposed to the new covenant, where God invites us to have close, personal, intimate relationships with Him. Now, when Esther went to the king, it was during the old covenant, and when she went to him without summon, instead of being angry with her or putting her death, the king was PLEASED with her and showed her MERCY, and proceeded to shower her with favor and gifts! If there was ever a more accurate foreshadowing of Christ's new covenant, this was it. Hooray for God's grace!

The other day, I got a new perspective on the story of Daniel. Even though, the only thing he was told NOT to do, was praying to God, he did it anyway. If I was Daniel I would not have been that strong In my faith, to trust God that much. I would just have 'played along' and praise the King and asked for forgiveness afterwards.
Daniel did something that doesn't make any sence, and the result of that was AMAZING. The King turned to God!
If you think about it, it doesn't make sence why innocent Jesus had get crucified, but the result was mindblowing!!
So sometimes you have to do things, that doesn't make any sence at all!
Have a great day, God bless! :)

I love the story of hosea and how his life is a picture out redemptive story in Jesus. Hosea married a sinful woman just as we are the bride of Christ, because "while we were sinners Christ died for us." God bless. great videos Jon.

I know I'm late to the party, here but I have to agree with you, Andrew! Hosea gives a very real picture of what it's like for God to unconditionally and wholeheartedly love us; yet we constantly run from Him and disrespect Him. Just like Gomer did to Hosea. The book really shows us the agony that God feels when we run from Him. Yet still shows that we can be redeemed. SUCH a great picture of the unending love of God!

I have recently finished a Beth Moore Bible study on the book of Daniel . ( It was really good and I would highly recommend it to all the ladies out there . ) As you already know , everything in Daniel points to something in the future . I believe it also points to Christ to in an evident way too .

+Sabrina Thornton I love the connection between Daniel being put on trial and placed in the lions den AND Jesus being put on trial and ultimately being placed in the tomb. Both were punished for teaching the people about God's Word. They both had a stone rolled over the den/tomb. Lastly, they both survived/resurrected the next day when the stone was rolled away!

to answer your question: The love story of Hosea and Gomer is a clear representation of the Love story of God and His people, and the way Hosea would give up his honors and privileges to always pursue her, even and specially when she failed him the most, points directly to Jesus coming and living and dying for us, God pursuing us, when we were still in sin :)

Excellent teaching! Yes, too many believers avoid the OT without realizing that Jesus is found throughout it and it serves as a future foundation. Missing 2/3 of His Word and only focusing on the last 1/3 (NT) is the same as starting a novel 2/3 through. / Whenever "Scripture" is referenced by Jesus, His disciples, or Paul, et al, they're referring to the OT, it is the foundation of His Word and is very relevant today. / The old Covanant was changed, but the "Law" (His precepts of right and wrong, e.g. 10 Commandments) was not abolished; the New Covenant writes those guidelines and instructions ("the Law") onto our hearts; once saved, we don't have license to sin, we must strive to continue doing good, being good and must repent when and where we fail (which we certainly will); our hearts have been transformed to know those right and wrongs on our hearts - Jesus has paid for our iniquity, but we're still obliged to walk in The Way that He did, as so did His disciples. /

The institution of the Passover feast is one of my favorite OT stories because it makes the connection between the seasonal sacrifice of a spotless lamb at a specific time and the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. He was the one true sacrificial lamb offered up for the forgiveness of all sins and ushered in the blood of the new covenant between God and his people.

The story of the prophet Hosea and the prostitute Gomer is such a powerful picture of how God doesn't stop loving us or pursuing us, even when we are unfaithful to him. Jesus died for us to demonstrate His love for us, even though we have been unfaithful. He will never stop pursuing us. There are so many others that I love, but this one definitely stands out. Such a great question!

I absolutely love your videos! They are so encouraging to Christian's to stay focused on what is important, The Lord. The question you asked on this video made me think. One of my favorite books is Job; because of all of the hardship he must endure, yet he never loses focus on God. God knows that Job will be a faithful servant, just a Jesus was as he died on the cross for our sins.

Great video! Another thing I've heard that would get someone really excited about reading the Old Testament is that everything points to Jesus. For example, God led His people out of slavery in Egypt from Pharaoh like how Jesus sets us free from the slavery of sin (John 8). The passover lamb story in Exodus. Another thing was how Abraham carried his only son up a mountain as a sacrifice. Esther went into the kings house and risked her life to save people. Everything points to Jesus our King :) He's the seed that bruised the serpent's head promised in Genesis 3:15. While reading the cool stories of the Old Testament, take a deeper look at how it's about JESUS

+Cienna A Yes! You're absolutely correct! My understanding of the NT has been significantly magnified by reading the OT (even though portions are hard to trudge through) - it is essential reading! (Another: After Passover/His crucifixion, the "First Fruits" coincides with His Resurrection after 3 days & 3 nights in the tomb. Scores of other such corresponding instances!

It's funny you should ask this question, because I started reading the bible with the New Testament and as I got into Romans, I started losing the point. So I figured to understand everything about Jesus I decided to start back in Genesis and now I'm up to Ezekial and even though I don't understand everything I've read thus far, I so better understand how Jesus came. Now I can hardly wait until I start reading through the New Testament again cause I know it will all make more sense! Thanx so much for doing these videos hugs Renee ( been a subbie for awhile now)

    Hey Jon!
Lately I have been feeling that I have been called to ministry. I really enjoy your mini bible study videos and I have been thinking about starting something similar as a way for me to start ministering to others. How do you choose the books of the Bible that you break down during ADITW?
    Thanks,

I have no idea how he does it, but if I were to guess I would think he prays about it, considers what is best for teaching about Jesus and what the commentors (oh hey - that's us!) request, and jumps into it. You can that Jon knows his Bible and I'm also curious as to how he chooses them.

I think that the moment in which Jacob blesses his sons is something that refers to Jesus. Because in that bit I though he was going to give a massive speech about Joseph and his descendants but he instead did that for Judah, from which both David and Jesus descend from, saying that "the obedience of the nations shall be his" (Genesis 49:8)

Question... if the old covenant is now obsolete, does that also make those promises obselete? Many Christians like myself find comfort in the promises found there, like in Psalms for example.

The story of Joseph and how he was sold into slavery. Just like Joseph, Jesus was promised to have a special place in the God's eyes, and they were both betrayed because of it. Joseph's brothers betrayed him, while one of Jesus' disciples betrayed Him. Both of their fates were sealed by a person named Judas. If Judas had not decided to sell Joseph into slavery, he would never have become powerful in Egypt. If Judas Iscariot had not betrayed Jesus, He might have never had a second chance to die for the sins of humanity. The parallels keep going on and on.

  • @ejipuh

I know that the story of King David reminds me of Jesus because he was Israel's first good king, a man who was a literal (but temporary) king over Israel. Jesus was and is the permanent king over all the world, and His work and love is not limited to just Israel, but is available to all. David was the king of some; Jesus is the king of all.

I think the story of Jonah and the whale points directly to Jesus. Jonah spent three days in the whale's belly and was saved by God when he promise to be faithful and go to Niveveh in order to preach the gospel to the people and make them repent. Jonah relates to Jesus because they both preach the message to the Lost.

In answer to your question: I think that the story of Joseph really points to Jesus. Joseph was Jacob's in a way chosen son like Jesus is, Joseph was betrayed by those he loved, his brothers, like Jesus was by the disciples and sold for silver like Jesus was by Judas. Joseph was also wrongfully accuse, like Jesus was and in the end Joseph provided all people to live, just like Jesus has.

    Hi Jon,
Just wondering how you address comments negating the relevance of the Bible and its guidelines. For example, how there is a part in the Bible which lists a bunch of different rules like not mixing fabrics in garments, etc. and that being taken out of context to say that certain other things in the Word are irrelevant (if that makes sense). Thanks!
