    Charlie,
    Brilliant...." focus on movements I can do away from the pain zone vs on what I can't do." To my surprise, simple trunk twists reduced reduced piriformis pain!
    Your insight about focusing what I can do and taking actions that feel good, also apply to personal and family relationships. Break through in this area of life too!
    You're so insightful!
    Thank you.

    I like what you said about Mind and Movement. Move the focus away from the pain zone . I think that's what i did when i had a meniscus tear in right knee. I continued doing things with other parts of my body, eating well , etc , and it healed after one month. 😅 (After one xray and mri, the doctors prescribed nothing but painkillers, which i did not take. I was told sometimes, it does not heal!😢) Your suggestion is very constructive. I learnt something valuable. The body is able to heal itself in such cases .

    Watching this video got me from lying on the couch (my back is "out"/bulging disc that I'm taking tramadol for) to realizing it doesn't hurt to stand for a while and move my arms around, so I got up and cut up some vegetables. And took my dog out in the sun.
    Idk if it was in this video or another of yours, but I went out of my way to arch my back a touch more than normal and it hurt less to walk & stand! Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🤩

    Charlie, I think it’s excellent idea not to stretch poke or otherwise disturb the area where the flare up is occurring I would like to add that twisting is not a good idea for people with back problems or hernias and that instead of poking the area (because people want to do something) it’s best to lie down and move the area, with no weight applied. For example doing clam shells but lying on your back so there is no muscles/ strain involved other than opening and closing your legs. Hope this helps……

    Really helpful and timely video! Can you clarify a bit more about avoiding the problem area - for example for me when I lean down to the left side and grab my ankle it really helps the right sided pain but I feel a lot of stretching. Should I avoid that because it’s going into the painful area, or is it ok because it helps the pain?

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  Год назад +2

      Good question! If reducing the pain- that’s a great start and seem safe to me. But if pain relief doesn’t last- then you’ll need to find another motion 👍
      Make sense?

    My PT had me turning the air blue as she worked away at back knots just above where I'm getting pain. I never went back. I was told it was muscular. Prior to that another PT told me it was piriformis and had me stretching that muscle all the time. I'm just doing what I can and see what happens😳

    Hiya Charlie...are you by chance able to discuss points about issues with lower body due to lumbar scholiosis especially. Maybe ideas of variable stretching?! I think I asked in the past. I think down in USA, where healthcare access is not accessible so much, it may help pple that do not have access to imagjng and specialists. Lumbar scolio is often 'idiopathic' or it stems from a multitude of bad lufe habits or jobs.

    I have pain across my back from right to left. Nothing seems to help. The pain seems to move around, and I have been told I have an emotional back because of the stress I am under. Adjustments and AK treatments haven’t helped yet either. I continue to do my forever wellness exercises at the YMCA, and take a seated yoga stretch class once a week. I am not sure where I need to go at this point, but focusing on the pain is really not helping. I have followed your exercises but not much relief. Any suggestions.? I am also working on stress issues

    Hello Dr. Charlie, I had a quick assessment yesterday with pain management doctor. Seems like I’m flexion intolerant and to some degree, extension hurts the left side. She tested for SI joint problems and the left was very painful. It’s still painful today. I’m going to try a few of the exercises in this video. I also have cervical radiculopathy mostly characterized by burning in the scapula and shoulder. I know that’s not your focus, but just wondering if you have a resource I can look up for sage exercises?
