I’ve struggled with back pain since I was a teenager. I’m now pretty capable of managing and moving through a flare up. This information matches my experience really well. I do a lot do visualization, deliberate relaxing, and gentle movement. It’s the only process that actually promotes my healing. I used to lock up, avoid moving, fear the pain, and a flare up could last several months. Now, probably a few weeks.
Following you 😊 2yrs having sciatica pain, L4 n L5 .. on therapy and pain reliever .. doing your advices and those exercises ... I hope I'll get better gradually get my life back in shape .. I'm 62 yrs and still beautiful ! It's jz the pain that's been bothering me .. tried bending as ur advice don't feel pain and no stiffness of muscles and i think I'll do this more often ... Tenx 😅❤
Thank you I needed this video. 2 mm disc protrusion l5 s1. Every doctor and pt said it’s muscle related and it’s nothing to worry about. Unfortunately I’ve had flare ups for 7 months. I’ll change my mentality moving forward
A brilliant synthesis of the objective and subjective, of the real and imagined, of the physical and mental. You are one of a kind Dr Davis, (in a good way that is). Thank you for your incredibly helpful videos!
Hi Doctor, I have been exercising for 6 months, 5-6 times a week. I have been spending a lot of time strengthening my core due to chronic back pain. In the beginning there was less pain, but now I am starting to have more pain in my left hip and my lower back. I am not sure why after so many months of working out I am experiencing more pain and discomfort instead of getting pain free. Would you be so kind to explain what I am doing wrong? Thank you.
@@ShapeshiftWellnessI'm doing everything right. I've just returned from the gym. The injury was a week ago, but It's the second cold day synced with some pain in my lower back. But I'm positive after your video.
This was what I was looking for on your page. Marvellous method. I do have spondylolisthesis. Does that mean my pain is actually from damage? I have severe pain that doesn't go without painkillers every day. But I also would want to implement your method to improve my mindset about this issue and hopefully make those flare-ups go down
Glad this helped! Spondy's are common and it depends on the type and grade, but it's absolutely possible to rehab a spondy and significantly improve symptoms and function. Our program is designed to help look at a person's health holistically and give structure and support to get people back to an active life.
It goes with pain meds? I have no real diagnosis that can be found and the pain never goes away. Sitting at week 12. Three surgeons said not my back and most likely autoimmune 😢
Well, I’m going through a flare up right now and hopefully on the back side. This morning I went to PT for follow up on hip pain exercises needed because of lumbar stenosis and hip arthritis. Doctors have recently recommended full hip replacement and lumbar laminectomy, both are surgeries I would like to avoid. I’m 68 and do water aerobics 3x/wk. So, I’m at the PT this morning and tell her I think I have or am about to have a herniated disc. The PT pokes around a bit then has me stand next to a wall and lean my hips towards the wall and Bam. Full seizure of lumbar spine. After that we did the deep breathing. It hurts to think about it while writing this. The PT then offered a heat pack which I mistakenly laid on for 10 minutes. Later, after getting home, took diclofenac and tried some decompression. Then laying on my spinal corrector and slowly stretching vertebrae it’s starting to feel better. So, I think the root cause was a long plane ride followed by long car drive and altogether too much sitting over 3 days. That was about 4 weeks ago now. Will try to relax more now because I believe it will get better soon. Thanks Doc for your excellent presentation.
Sounds like a rough ride, I'm sorry you're dealing with this right now! If you ever need more of a deep-dive on education on this type of back pain, make sure to watch the masterclass! www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass
I injured my back heavy lifting 3 weeks ago. This was helpful. I have sciatica and just started PT couple days ago...the exercises they started me on make me feel worse. I think it could be somewhat mental.
Remember - pain is always multifactorial. We need to look at the whole human being, including anatomy, strength, stress, fear, sleep, nutrition, and so on. A solid plan makes all the difference.
😊 thank you I learned so much from your videos very helpful I wish I heard this 10 months ago I'm so grateful now I know it's okay to bend to exercise and to twist doing yoga again and exercising back at the gym what I thought all these spasms was from my herniations it's actually from an Over protective brain because I was freaking out over it everything you said not to do I did LOL and prolonged the healing. Now I know how to handle set backs Stay calm 😊
Thank you for the video I been having back tightness and slight spasms in back but I believe it's from the brain perceiving danger for many months free to bend twist and stretch I was given the wrong advice but I'm bending and twisting and stretching because the spine needs that I was making it worse who is getting even Toyota well I'm back at the gym and doing yoga but I'm still having slight spasms and tightness I guess it's okay to still continue with this leaving now I'm having constant tightness and more when I exercise the brain has to get used that I am safe and this is normal I don't believe this is coming from the discs anymore cuz it's been 11 months
@@ShapeshiftWellness it is hard . I was treated for periformes for many months. 10 months in pain. Finally last MRI showed 5 damaged discs in lower back. One disc protrusion is pinching the nerve root . I had 4 different cortisol shots, last one was 10 days ago and I feel much worse after the shot. Not sure where to go and what to do. I was very athletic alpinist and rock climber .
Does this work if I have Central Sensitization Syndrome (and Fibromyalgia)? I have constant lower back pain and when it increases I feel a burning sensation on my legs. Do you have tips about that condition?
Yes absolutely! You're going to love this video, it's part of a mini-series on the neuroscience of chronic pain: ruclips.net/video/eXeD-GIeqZ8/видео.html
I have degenerative disc disease spondylolisthesis retrolisthesis sacralisation L5 S1 level mild scoliosis sevre stenosis and severe omodia is this curable am always in great pain am 63 yrs old
These are conditions that we can typically see improvements in symptoms and function with good guidance, education, and accountability. Depending on severity, people might not got to 100% but usually we can make some improvement.

12 weeks and hitting that point where it's turning into chronic. It's in my freaking feet! I can deal with low back pain but I can't walk with my freaking feet. They're red and or BLUE with a few minutes of standing.
I freak out when my back goes more than a cramp in the leg because my whole body does a lateral shift and it hurts to sit and stand. But i try walk as much as i can till it gets straight.

Can disc dehydration and annular fissure get heals on l5 s1
Agree! What do you think about Class IV Laser treatment for lumbar and cervical areas?
Laser is low value, and expensive. Exercise, education, stress reduction, and high quality recovery are the most important things.

Sciatica for 6 weeks, walk a lot on the flat, gentle swimming and a few exercises and hanging from monkey bar….. too much? 80 year old fit female.
It's different for everyone and depends on symptom severity during and after exercise. The goal is to start slow and gradually build.
I hate when they say pain might last for days or months ,23 years later
I had chronic pain for 10 years, I get it. There is a way out though, nearly everyone can make significant progress with the right plan.

You Need hyperflexion exercises
I would rub and move it when I feel cramp.
I freak out when my back goes more than a cramp in the leg because my whole body does a lateral shift and it hurts to sit and stand. But i try walk as much as i can till it gets straight.
First rule of back pain: Don’t panic. Second rule would be to have a clear actionable plan to get stronger and prevent future episodes.
I can barely move
Does this apply if you have arthritis in your back?
Yep, most people have some arthritis, it’s usually nothing to panic about.
Arthritis means joint inflammation. It's not degenerative it's curable.
Stretch my leg
