    Nice video as usual. I have the same heat exchanger on my E55 and it works great. As you said, it gets a lot more airflow from the fan than the bottom mount one so performance at low speeds is much better. It helps a little with temperature rise rate under boost but that's limited mainly by the unit under the supercharger, however, my IAT stays flat at idle and my recovery time is only a few seconds (even with a lot more boost than you have).
    One thing you didn't address, however, is bleeding the system. With the coolant flowing from top to bottom of the heat exchangers (which, I agree, is the best way), you allow coolant to flow through the system while the heat exchangers are mostly full of air. Running the pump will never bleed the system (even with your remote tank and/or bleeding from the fitting near the supercharger) because coolant will fall right to the bottom of the heat exchangers and keep flowing while a lot of the air stays behind. The best way would probably be to add bleed valves to the top of both heat exchangers, however, I have had good results just from vacuum filling the system. You can also help bleed both exchangers by disconnecting the (easily accessible) top line at the secondary heat exchanger until gravity forces coolant from both the hose and heat exchanger (it's kind of messy, but definitely worth it).
    You may be able to live with the rear main seal leak. I've had the same leak for years, but it's pretty slow: I never have to add oil, it never leaves drops on my garage floor, and cleaning off the bellhousing and encapsulation panel at each oil change is a lot easier than replacing the seal. I'm pretty OCD about that kind of thing, and being an MB tech, it's not that big a deal for me to take care of, but even I can't justify it (also: leaked oil=cheap rust-proofing).

    with the external trans cooler is mainly for a daily driver that had its trans rebuilt for added insurance.. I would have looked around on how to have both or have a smaller external trans cooler. usually most will also use a external power steering cooler to actually have both just to have the ability to have the added insurance to help keep the trans fluid a little cooler. I have done it and it seems to work as good but at least helped some if you take it to the track

  • @chuck_machine
    @chuck_machine 6 лет назад

    Hi Alex, you might want to add some additional support to the upper bracket for your secondary heat exchanger. If that's the primary mount for the hood strike, that means when you're rolling down the road, the hood is constantly trying to pull against it, which will fatigue the upper tab mount (especially since it's only aluminum). I couldn't tell for sure, but it looks like it was better supported with the old bracket in place.

  • @jimmys2811

    I think the routing for your lines might be wrong. It should go TANK > IC > HE > FRONT PUMP > TANK. You want it to go from the tank to the IC is so that you can fill it with ice and have super chilled water flowing from the tank directly to the IC. Hope you see this and it makes sense.

    • @LegitStreetCars
      @LegitStreetCars  6 лет назад +1

      That makes sense in my head. The way I have it with the bottom tank port to pump inlet and then pump to IC has been working great. Since my pump is wired to run all the time it pumps that freezing cold water right to the IC first. Then after it passes the IC it goes right into the HE and now the 2nd HE and back to the tank.
      I think either way would work though. Thanks for posting up good ideas.
      Alex

    Best 7 things you can do with this car are 1: fit a larger inter cooler for the supercharger, 2: Split the cooling system, 3: Upgrade the intercooler pump, 4: Fit a 77mm clutched pulley, 5: Fit 550cc injectors, 6: Get a tune (Eurocharged, VRP, German Muscle etc etc), 7: 1 step colder plugs. That will give you the best price to performance ratio - assuming you do the work yourself you'd be into it for about $2,000 to $2,500. I went a little further with short headers and a 92mm throttle body but really the cost of those and having them fitted was not worth the gain. Oh and get the supercharger serviced as well. Great fucking car.

    Great mods on your car!
    Only question I have is why you lead the hot water through the small new heat exchanger first and then through the bigger lower one? Now you are heating up everything behind the small one for no reason, other way around (lower one first) you loose a lot of heat not affecting the other heat exchangers anymore.
    Just a thought.

    Nice one! So tempted to get an E55 before prices start to shoot up. Only watched two video's today but I'll have to watch them all. I used to have a CLS55 and its really cool seeing someone who knows the cars well. You're so lucky to have a two post lift and a garage to work in! The number of bolts I lost on my gravel driveway! ha. If you haven't done an oil change vid yet I'd be keen to see one as I know there are two drain plugs on the M113K and always wondered where the other one is. Great content, keep it up.

    Alex, I'm an NSX owner so don't hold that against me. I was interested in your water/methanol install. I thought you mentioned adding an injector before each intercooler( I have 1 on each side behind rear tire) and one right into throttle body. I'm running a 3.5 liter Twin Turbo so it's getting kinda warm.

  • @ashishpatel350

    You could get accue air airride. Or just replace it with a new set of coil overs.
    Every car with air suspension dies after the 7-10 year mark. Range rover, Mercedes, BMW, etc.
    Ps the headlights can be polished back to clear you don't need new lenses. It's just the top clear coat just oxidizing with uv damage.

    • @stephenchader3145
      @stephenchader3145 6 лет назад +1

      You're right that they can be polished back to very nearly clear, but if you leave them bare plastic they will oxidize very fast. A good clearcoat (body shop grade, not a cheap spray can) will help prevent this, and will look very good, but they won't be nearly as good as new (if compared side to side). Given that new lenses cost about the same or less than a repair kit and good clearcoat, I agree that replacement is the best choice.

    Here is another suggestion for you design flaw or common issues. How about BMW V8 valve stem oil seals really inexpensive part with a big service bill. They also have a coolant pipe issue as well.
    You could also do one on the N54 6 twin turbo high pressure fuel pump head bolt issue and carbon build up issue.

    I've seen other people ask your opinion on one car over another so I would like your learned opinion. I am looking at a couple different MB's . One is '06 CLS55, other is 04 CL55. I really like the looks of the CLS but the sbc brakes scare the crap out of me. The CL of course has the ABC suspension. Also very expensive to fix but easier to change to coilovers. I've never seen a sbc brake conversion. Don't think it's possible. Which one would you stay away from?

      I would take the CLS55 over 2 CL55s

      I would take the CLS55 hands down. ABC can really suck and get crazy expensive. Just make sure you have an updated or newer SBC pump and you will be fine.

    Alex I found my E55... the issue is stock for $9000. Or $11000 with tunes such as Eurocharged tune
    Eurocharged heat exchanger
    Meziere high flow intercooler pump
    Blue interior
    E63 headlights and tail lights
    E63 wheels. Would you recommend purchasing it from a mechanic a euro shop with bolt ons and chip or Stock?
    Thanks to you I am getting an E55

    Just read a article about how hard it is with RUclips demonetization. Hope you are having fun with the channel still. It seems like you have a day job.

      Hey! Yea I've had a few videos demonetized. Definitely sucks especially because I make it a point to not swear at all and be generally professional. Google has robots that look over videos and they may flag a good video for no reason. But yea, I have 2 other jobs and 2 kids so this is super part time. I honestly don't make any money at all after you consider the stuff I buy for the channel. I hope that changes as the channel grows but like many RUclipsrs it's kind of slow in the beginning.
      I still like doing it and have so many ideas. Just not that much time, haha. Oh well. Glad you are a subscriber and I hope you enjoy the content.

    Where does the external trans cooler get mounted to now?

    @legitstreetcars I have a similar settup on my SL55 using multiple heat exchangers but I've also kept the origional plumbed in so it further aids cooling capacity rather than sit there as a dead unused unit. Is there a safe and reliable way to wire in a second bosch 010 pump so they can share the workload? I assume 2 pumps would assist flow rate greatly as well helping lower the IAT. Thankyou for your videos I've learned so much!!
