    Do you know why the capital letters are in the upper right corner?
    This is because the key cap is divided into 4 cells, for the four corners. Lower half is for unshifted, and upper half is for shifted. Left half is for non-AltGr and right half is for AltGr. This is why the digits appear bottom left (some exceptions like French keyboard) and capital letters upper left. Then AltGr in bottom right. Shift+AltGr is rare, but that is upper right. - Putting the capital letters in the middle breaks this pattern; although you could argue that the pattern is already broken as there's no lowercase letter in bottom left, but that is to avoid redundancy.

    By the way I found out a way to make membrane boards actuate without bottoming out, you take a small spring and place it in the keycap, so when you push down the spring actuates the rubber dome.

For the price, that I can't afford much, it was good for me. I really like the tactile response, but I have to press a lot to type as well. For gaming tho, good enough! For anyone interested, is the Warrior TC-198 from multilaser.

    Have had this same keyboard since the year it came out. The feel is very nice and no issues with the keys. Really the only issue on my keyboard is the WASD pattern. Of course, I use those the most for gaming and they seem to have lost the black paint on them and are now blobs with light coming through. Very reliable and has a great no tangle cord.

  • @finndriver1063
    @finndriver1063 7 лет назад +7

    Would anyone be able to explain why not having to bottom out the keys is an advantage. I know you don't have to press the keys as far to register the keypress but why is this an advantage over a short-travel membrane keyboard?

    • @Grumskiz
      @Grumskiz 7 лет назад +3

      It allows you to (touch-)type with very little force required. A lot of the stress on your fingertips that can make typing tiring or in extreme cases painful does not come from light or heavy switch mechanisms, but from compulsively hammering the keys to make sure they register. It's definitely something one has to un-learn and get used to. It's similar to learning to touch-type. For gaming I find this feature of mechanical keyboards fairly useless, because quick reactions and gentle keypresses don't mix for me, but I'm sure some pro-gamers would disagree with me.
      Good switches to explore this are Tactile Alps or Matias switches, Purple Zealios, Topre, Cherry MX Brown and Clear (Chyros will disagree, but I like them). BTC foam & foil switches will also show this, but they can be tough to get in good condition nowadays. I find it very hard to not bottom out on the IBM Model M, because the actuation is quite low on the keytravel and the spring is quite heavy. Cherry MX Blue is also difficult, but at the opposite extreme. The switch is so light and the clicking action so abrupt that I almost always bottom out, because I can't stop my finger fast enough. But YMMV! Cherry MX Green is okay again. The heavier spring helps to stop pressing the key all the way.
      I have little experience with very rare/old/expensive switches and keyboards, maybe Chyros can chime in.
      Eventough I have been to typing on mechanical keyboards for about six
      years now and touch typing in Dvorak all this time, I just started changing my typing
      behaviour about two years ago and stopped bottoming out. As I have stated I'm only able to do this on select types of switches, but I find it greatly improved my typing "endurance". But not necessarily my speed.
      Next step for me is learning to hover-type ^^

    • @Chyrosran22
      @Chyrosran22  7 лет назад +8

      If you have to bottom out on every keypress, you more or less learn to smash your keyboards rather than to use it gently, which results in a much less comfortable use pattern. A mechanical or capacitive keyboard doesn't require you to do this, so after a while of using them you'll find yourself gradually relaxing your typing style more, even if you still bottom out when using it. This is also why I dislike linear switches with heavy springs, as they encourage the same smashy style of keyboarding.

    • @CodeWeaverCW
      @CodeWeaverCW 7 лет назад

      I always thought heavy linears were a gateway to *not* bottoming out, simply because it's virtually impossible to do so.

    • @CodeWeaverCW
      @CodeWeaverCW 7 лет назад +2

      @Grumskiz "I find it greatly improved my typing 'endurance'. But not necessarily my speed."
      Very interesting. I've also been unable to understand why bottoming out is such a bad thing. I purposefully look for switches that make it easiest for me to bottom out my switches and call it a day. Thing is, I don't really have any problem with endurance, but speed is the absolute most cherished metric to me. I think hammering the keys is what it takes for me to get 120+ WPM.
      @Finn Driver Even though I am a fan of bottoming out the keys in spite of what everyone says, it *is* convenient that a key might register, even if you pressed it too gingerly the first time on accident. That's less typos you have to go back and correct.

    • @wheatsale
      @wheatsale 7 лет назад +1

      One of the main issues I've found that comes with bottoming out even short travel keys is that once you've reached the bottom of the key travel, pretty much any additional force you exert goes straight into your finger bones, since there is no more distance for the key to travel. Any force used in the keys beyond bottoming them out then contributes to fatigue.
      This would not be a problem if people were gentle when bottoming out keys, but as Thomas mentioned above, being required to bottom out keys often teaches the habit of smashing the keyboard. Smashing the keyboard results in excessive force used, which can lead to fatigue.
      I spend most of my time programming, so I do a fair amount of typing, and I used to type primarily on a chicklet style keyboard. I was used to my fingers feeling fatigued or even sore after typing. Since switching primarily to mechanical boards with good tactility at the point of actuation, I have found myself bottoming out far less frequently and the fatigue is not as much of an issue if at all. Even on a heavier switch like a buckling spring, where I might bottom out commonly, I am not smashing the board because I know when the keys register a press.
      I have heard claims of health benefits associated with softer typing, and tbh I haven't seen convincing evidence that typing softly is good for you. But I can personally attest that it does make typing more comfortable and pleasant, at least for myself, and I think that is worth it.

    i owned a "mechanical feel" keyboard before. they feel fine, however they don't last. after about two years of using one, the keycaps had their coating peel off, some keys' stalks had chunks of them chip off, making the keys very unstable. the enter key saw the worst of this, nearly completely came off, and was barely being held in by the brackets, which would never stay, causing the enter key to constantly pop out if you hit it wrong.

      So did the model M, and that’s one of the best keyboards ever made. Key rollover is rarely an issue in real life usage, particularly not when the matrix is adapted such that those keys often used together, in this case WASD, don’t conflict with other keys around them. He had to go all the way over to O to conflict with QW, that’s actually pretty good.

    This keyboard reminds me a lot the Cooler Master Storm Devastator Keyboards. They are a "mechanical feel" rubber dome type keyboard with very tactile feeling rubber domes. The key presses sound exactly the same as well when I took a listen. Had a similar experience with a Masterkeys Lite L, I tried one at a store and thought it feels amazing. Then I passed on it because it wasn't mechanical. Later CM released the keyboard on its own, so I bought it anyway and stayed on my desk for probably a year, and I still think it's a better tactile keyboard than most tactile mechanical switches out there, even if Kailh Box tactile switches are coming close, they do feel like mechanical rubber domes, but good domes are still more tactile.

    I got one of these mem-chanical keyboards a while back off a buy and sell and I actually quite like it, and I already have a k70 and a razer blackwidow ultimate lol.
    Also its worth mentioning I that the keycaps of these keyboards are compatible with cherry MX Red keyboards, as they use the same stems, which is something that you didnt mention. Though that is assuming this board uses the same switches as the model I have, even though they look and sound the exact same I dont know if for some reason the board in the video uses different switches/stems on the keyboard/caps.
    Where I live here in Canada it would actually be much cheaper for me to order one of these cheap mem-chanical keyboards and rip off the compatible switches (some keys are obviously shaped differently or dont have the stabilizers for the K70) to put onto my K70 board than it would be to order a set of keycaps (even the cheapest set of keycaps I found converted to CAD were more expensive/just as expensive even before shipping).
