Finally an honest review and someone who is not just a shill for Peter! I have much more respect for youtubers who are honest. Thank you!
Thanks for watching
awesome video man, got the freewell after this video!
Thanks for watching
@@DavidOastler Cheers!
Terrific review!
Thanks Orio
Great review, thanks.
Thanks
The Peter Mckinnon ones have a green dollar cast all over it 😂
Thanks David good review.
Lol that is funny
thanks for the video man... just solidify me buying the freewell
They are great
Hi David, thanks for another great review !
Are these suitable for use with step-up rings? I am looking to get a set for 82mm but hope to be able to use them on other size lenses as well.
Yes I believe they are.
Thanks for the speedy reply :)
I found the step-up rings ...

Hello david, A very informative video. will it cause vignette in video at around 17mm?
It might 16 is borderline
Hello David. I'm more interested in these filters for still work. My question to you is, with price/value not being of concern, and aside from build quality and design, bottom line, which degraded the image the least in terms of pure resolution, the Peter McKinnon ones or the Freewells?
Both the same to me so save the money and get the Freewell ones
I trust everything you say man.
Thanks
so awesome. is the name engravings included when you purchase the set?
No it was just for me.
@@DavidOastler It is if you purchase over a certain value.
Doesn't the cross hatching come from exceeding the max value on the filter? On the Hoya filter, were you beyond the "Max" setting when you noticed the cross hatching or was it within the range shown on the filter?
Yes it’s the combination of the 2 polarised filters.
Does the lens hood fit with these? Specifically for 70-200 gmaster lens
I’m not sure I don’t have that lens I always take the hoods off
Hi David? Size wise can we attach lens hood after freewell VND? This info would be help my decision to get bigger VND or not. Thank you so much I always getting help from you.
It works with some lens hoods and not others.
@@DavidOastler Thank you David 🙏
@@DavidOastler Sir. Do you think its better to buy wider bigger VND for reducing vignettes? With step up ring. I'm hesitating to choose right size VND with hood or bigger VND with step up ring.
I will definitely buy one of your recommendation. Thank you so much again.
@@DavidOastler I have sony a7iii and Tamro 28-75 2.8 btw .
Yes step up rings will give a better vignette
I bought both the 72mm and 77mm versions of the 2-5 stop VND FreeWell filters and have been very happy with them optically. Unfortunately for me, the outer lens lock ring on my 72mm filter unscrewed during use after a month and fell off while I was in the field. I didn't hear the lens and ring fall so I did not recover the parts. I contacted FreeWell and they replied that the retaining ring was normally very tight and that I must have abused the filter, and that the replacement parts could not be installed in the field by the user. I told them the filter had not been abused and that the lock ring must have been loose from the factory and requested they send a replacement. Not sure what they are going to do. I hope they stand by their product. The 77mm VND seems fine so far, outer ring is still tight. It looks funny on a 58 mm lens, however, and I need two filters in service concurrently for video with two cameras. I'm hoping I receive a replacement 72 mm 2-5 VND filter soon.
Wow I hope they look after you.
They are sending a replacement. All good if the replacement and the 77 do not come apart.
How bright was the scene at the waterfall without the filters?
I can’t remember but I did need the nds.
look good.. you can get a twin pack on Amazon uk for a little discount
Yes they are cheap for a limited time so much cheaper then the Peter McKinnon ones
I recently got an a6400 and sigma 30mm, rokinon 12mm, and am going to probably get the 56mm sigma and maybe, just maybe an 85mm sony or rokinon w/ AF. Nonetheless, been looking at getting ONE variable ND filter, ideally hard stop style, to fit on all the main lenses I use, of course with a step up ring system. i DO sometimes do video work w/ two cameras in which case that would leave me dry for a 2nd ND filter set, but nonetheless, I've really been looking at these Freewell filters I've just started hearing about. I have looked into B+W, Gobe, but really thinking hard about the freewell. a little bummed about needing two to get past 5 stop range, but i guess that's what makes them good, and better than "one size fits all" other brands that go the full swing, and maybe lose some quality in doing so. thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching
@@DavidOastler what do ya think about the Sirui ND filters? i think they have a variable one for about $135 USD goes to 8 stop..
Spencer Garn I’ve never used them.
@@DavidOastler i think I'm giving up on Variable ND filters and just gonna buy two singular ND filter's that are good like B+W or higher quality. Maybe Gobe, not sure. I seem to only need a couple specific stops of ND and they are usually better when they are not variable i think. unless I spend the 200$+ on Freeman but that got me thinking since they are magnetic can we even put other filters on top of them?? or a lens hood, etc.. that's sort of a deal breaker if they can only be used with themselves...
Spencer Garn for shooting video you really need variable nds if you want to double the shutter speed
Since you used them with your a6400 too I guess it was on Sigma 16 1,4.
Yes it was
really good review thanks. honest! +++
Im so tired of the X-shape of other brands so Im getting one for sure
PS. You should add affiliate link for Europe aswell for us EU citizens (germany is best /biggest here)
Thanks Eric
what freewell nd filter did you used in 10:02?
2-5stop.
@@DavidOastler thanks sir :)
Hello
Hi I'm Vincent. I'm a freelance photo and video content creator. So recently I was searching for a Good VND filter to buy. And I came across Freewell bard. And I should say from the videos which I watched from RUclips and from other creators.. this filters are performing quit good. So I made my my to buy the pack of two VND filters.. but the only thing I'm not sure about and it's holding me back to purchase. Is I'm not sure if I can put other stylish filter on top of this VND filters. I know the out part of this specific message filter are magnetic.. & I know Freewell also make some mist filters which are magnetic. But I own many stylised filters which I constantly use.. I'm not sure if this Freewell VND filters treads build in front of the filter.. so please help me with this.
They only work with the magnetic filters.
I❤️
Hello sir for video , which nd filter should i get 2 to 5 stop or 6 to 9 stop...?
I’ve found the 3-5 stop more useful but it all depends on how bright the sun is.
Shooting in the middle of the day
1/24 shutter, f8,,, which ND filter you suggest
Mark Garcia probably the 2-5 stop
@@DavidOastler i order already 6-9 stop do you think its ok.. Maybe 6 stop
It’s hard to say it depends how bright the sun is.
Thanks Dave. For the side-by-side test shots, any chance you could pull a print from each and upload? Just JPEG is fine. I was unimpressed with the PolarPro VNDs, green cast on the right side of the frame only, so a simple white balance adjustment wouldn't fix as it would then throw out the other side of the frame. My SLR Magic filter performed a lot better. If these Freewells are even enough across the frame, particularly the 6-9, I might grab one.

Sorry Simon I get rid of all the files I just do t have the room to store it all it was all shot in 4k
With the testing I did it seemed uniform all over but You might need to test it.
@@DavidOastler All good, thanks Dave.
Any chance of seeing a test for x-factor on a full frame camera with a ultra wide focal length like 17 mm (Tamron 17-28)
I don’t have that lens at the moment Gorben
variable ND filters are more problematic with ultra wide lenses. Hoping to see how well these Freewells do
@@gordoncheong7709 do you think this variable nd would be problematic on rokinon 12mm on my sony crop sensor?
Here 😉
ruclips.net/video/JFFaynfI4Os/видео.html
Spencer Garn, I have tried the variable PowerXND on my Tamron 17-28 at 17mm and I get the X at even the lightest (6-stops) setting. But I would like to see this Freewell tested. Remember variable NDs are just 2 polarizers on top of each other. You don’t get uniform polarization because the view is so wide. So not sure if it will technically work especially on 12mm.
lol you youtubers actually believe that a Peter Mckinnon is something of an actual brand
Lol The filters are called that
@@DavidOastler technically they're PolarPro
