I have a fully restored black, with red interior, '63.5 500XL 427 "R" code car. Unique version because the side trim has red color in the middle instead of black.

What you are probably hearing is nt an exaust leak. The 406 FE was a solid lifter engine and it always had that kind of noise. At low RPMs you will really hear it but at higher RPMs it becomes pretty much non existent because the cam and lifter surfaces begin to float on an oil cushion. I had 3 Galaxies back in the day, two 390s and one 406 Interceptor P code with a single 4 bbl double pumper Holley carb. That 406 was the boss until the 427s came out. Even though the 406 didn't have the HP of the 427 it stayed together a whole lot better and was much more dependable and longer lasting.

@@TBullCajunbreadmaker FALSE. That's clearly an exhaust leak and NOT solid lifter noise. I have a "R" code 427 version of this car. No exhaust leak(s) though.

@@sergeantmasson3669 I think you should stick to an engine that you know something about and the 427 is not a 406. The 406 is a completely different generation of FE engines. I am pretty sure I have had much more experience with FE type engines than you have had. Have you ever heard what a 406 Interceptor engine with a 3/4 Isky cam and solid lifters sounds like? Probably not. You can have a really bad exhaust leak and still hear what those lifters are doing, especially at idle speed.

@@TBullCajunbreadmaker Try again. I'm 50+ year master level factory certified auto/truck tech. Mostly with Ford. I've worked on/built more Ford FE engines than you likely ever have. My '57 Ford Custom 2dr sedan NHRA record holder has a de-stroked 427 FE engine that I personally built in 1970 that I still own and it's still street legal. Ford FE 406 engine was a bored 390 FE engine. Most all 427 FE engines were 4 bolt mains. FYI, All Ford FE engines can easily be converted to 4 bolt mains with little effort. I've also built more high-performance engines than you can imagine. Everything from two-stroke motorcycle engines to NHRA top fuel engines. Diesel engines and aircraft engines as well. Guaranteed that I've forgotten more about Ford engines than you'll ever know. DO NOT pretend to know things that you don't, PUTZ.

MANY years ago, I drove a '63 Galaxie (sorta) race car (locally, dirt-track entry-level "race car"! I paid $50 for it (1975!). I LOVED the way I could "pound-out" the MANY dents it got! They were NOTHING to my "strong" fist! I later attempted this "feat" with a '65 Plymouth Fury! I NEARLY FRACTURED MY HAND! Does this tell folks SOMETHING about "quality-built" Fords in the '60s?!

Guy loves his car, just not enough to fix a simple exhaust leak, which is disappointing for the video’s sake. Was looking forward to hearing the 406, but it sounded like my 75 maverick with the 250 inline 6, which was always blowing the donut gasket.

  • @spacecalander

Nope thats a exhaust manifold leak. New gaskets will take care of that before you burn a valve.

The idiot that keeps his foot on the clutch pedal will end up burning up the clutch really fast. You take ALL of the pressure off of the pedal after you shift, there is no such thing as keeping your foot on the clutch as you drive. That is an amatuer driver that knows little about driving powerful muscle cars. And the ticking you are hearing is normal for solid liters on a race cam in the 406. It does have a pretty good exaust manifold leak however, which was typical for the FE engines. I know I had three Galaxies.
