I had started doing a shell stitch hat using another pattern and totally got lost. This tutorial *saved my hat making life!* I literally frogged everything back to my original brim then started over with this tutorial. Plus, it's my first crochet hat ever, so this now has a special place in my maker-heart. 🖤
Gorgeous Mickey, when you teach it is so clear. I love it when a teacher tells me what we are going to do and also why, what your trying to achieve. I have ADHD and the way you explain things makes it very easy to learn. Thank you!!!
I crochet hats more than anything else. I have made hundreds. This is a really pretty hat. Advice to my fellow crocheters is that the pattern calls for 6 1/2 inches after the brim. That will make a very slouchy hat. I made 8 rows before the decrease of 4 rows and it made a form fitting beanie. I also just used a single brim and made 8 chains with 7SCBLO and it looked really nice. I also used Caron Jumbo Ombré in the color of Salmon. The yarn calls for an H hook so that is what I used. It was so much softer and made a thicker beanie and the reason I didn’t fold over the brim. I use Red Heart yarns all the time but for this one I’m happy I chose to use the Caron Ombré. Also this pattern is great because it can be perfectly sized to fit personally. The multiple is 6 so I did 66 chains instead of 72. I have a small head so 72 chains would have been loose on me. The pattern for a small adult head would be HUGE!!! Hope this helps to make your beanie fit perfectly! 🧶 😊
@Tanacarroll yes. I did for my 4 year old with 60 SC around the brim. 10 shells in each row instead of 12. Worked out really well. I tend to crochet on the tighter side though. So perhaps even 54 would be more suitable for a child if you have a looser stitch
Bought your book it’s great. I teach a very beginners class at my complex in Miami . So for about 6 peoples. Hopefully more as we all settle down from summer and vacations
If for whatever reason people don't want to use a stitch marker or yarn to mark the right side. Another way to tell is the tail from the foundation chain row will be to the left on the right side of your work.
Great hat! Keeping in mind that the stitchmultiple is six, how would you turn this into a scarf? For example, would I chain 19 and then start the pattern in the first stitch from the hook?
Thank you MIchael. This tutorial was very helpful. I am wanting to know how to modify this pattern for a newborn baby the would be in NICU. Thank you so much.
Cute hat I just finished one.If you would have turned the brim so the sl st was inside it would have been invisible..there is no right or wrong on this type of rib..I used red heart colorscape and a 4.5 hook..👍

I'm probably not the right host for you here on RUclips. I'm pretty informal. There are many other hosts that may align with your humour or goals for learning. I'm really sorry.
Sorry about that. I'm trying to have a bit of fun. I have been making videos since 2008. Trying to keep this job interesting even for me. It's been a long time.

I cannot learn something without knowing where the teacher's objective is going.

Love this pattern. Made two hats already. Wanted to send a picture but couldn’t figure out how. Thanks for all your work.
This is just a message board, so you cannot send or post photos here.
Lol I love that zinger! I kinda want it on a bag and hoodie.
Ain't that the truth.
Love your tips for seaming and tips for getting correct number of stitches around the band!
Makes sense right!?
Just amazing beautiful

Great solid advice. Thank you for sharing that.
You are so silly, Mikey, with your Zingers of the day! LoL 😂
Some of them are a bit tacky eh!
Love shell stitch patterns. Made this once. Love the idea of 3 different hats out of one pattern.
People will always complain if I don't have options. I'm trying to avoid it and it's helpful as well.
Very nicely explained 🙂 thank you. I will try to make this beanie today.

Awesome pattern/video, would love to crochet in a child size and teen size. Any instructions for those sizes?
I'm sorry, I don't that the detail without research and development. I'm sorry again, I don't have an answer for that at this time.
love it
I really wish I had watched this prior to making this hat. It was way too big on me, 21 chains for the brim nearly swallowed me up! 😂
See my comment please. You can fit the hat to your size and is easy to do. 😊
You didn't like, try it on after making just the rim??
Cute hat I just finished one.If you would have turned the brim so the sl st was inside it would have been invisible..there is no right or wrong on this type of rib..I used red heart colorscape and a 4.5 hook..👍
It depends how you wear it. Do it the way you most prefer.
Wow😇❣
THanks.
Mikey i don't know if I heard you say what size crochet hook to use. Love this cant wait to make. Thank you
Stand by. It's in the video description. I forgot. I look it up for you.
It states the following: Hook Size on Pattern: 5 mm / H/8
Yarn In Pattern: Red Heart Super Saver Ombre
For Teaching Purposes: I am showing same hook with Red Heart Roll With It Melange. Colour is called Hollywood.

I think the written measurement to top of hat is wrong. Love this pattern tho and am making it now 🙂
Make sure you email Yarnspirations through their website with your thoughts.
My question is how to round off the top. I never get the algorithm to reduce to get to a nice round peak.
It's a trial and error.
Hi Mikey. Can I use a regular stitch marker to denote right side
?
Absolutely. I'm cheap and I lose stitch markers so I just use spare yarn.
how do you make a strawberry stich hat with loom kit
So if I wanted to make it a pony tail or messy bun hat I just don't Close it on top?
Correct. You may want to finish it earlier as well.
I have never heard about stretching it.
I don't understand.
Sure... Work in progress! hmmm 😂
hahah.
Whips and chains joke very uncomfortable!
Sorry u don't care for the humor I am glad the instructor has one LOL
