    Hi , I have a stock 2021 Rav4 Trail that is 67" high ( Adventure in the USA ) . Do you know the new height of the Rav if I add the icamper you installed ? Just wondering if it would fit in a garage that is 8' tall . Thank you

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 года назад +1

      The iKamper is about 13" tall so in theory it should fit. However, it also depends on if your crossbars or roof rack add any height. Also if you add bigger tires, a lift, or stiffer coils you will increase your height as well.

      We use a Dometic PLB40 battery, with a 150w solar panel. The battery plugs into the back of the vehicle, so it charges up when we drive. When we are not driving, the fridge can run for 2 days on battery alone, or pretty much indefinitely with solar.

      I know... its expensive for sure. We are hoping it will last us 5+ years, and given we have spent almost 40 nights in it in our first year of ownership it seems to be worth it! Our rationale was that we will stay in fewer hotels on road trips, and save money on that at least.

      @@LunarLanderXplor Absolutely, it totally makes sense. Yea, Williams Hill BLM is pretty cool! Easy dirt road to get through the area, with a few good dispersed campsites. • @LunarLanderXplor

      That weight limit is the dynamic limit, meaning what the car is rated to hold on the roof while driving. The static weight limit, which is what the car is rated to hold on the roof while parked, is much higher. No issues with the rooftop tent & 2 people on top of the car.

    Cool Rav, but what is the difference between overlanding and car camping? Or are they the same and it just recently got rebranded?

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 года назад +2

      Car camping is typically driving to a camp site, pitching a tent, and sleeping there for a few nights. Overlanding typically involves vehicle-based exploration, usually moving from one spot to another every night. Overlanding vehicles can usually handle more long distance travel, and are designed for more self-sufficiency. For example, we have more first aid supplies, emergency gear, satellite comms, water, and solar power than the typical car camper vehicle. This particular trip (in this video) was not really an overland style trip since we just camped in one spot, but we still use our overlanding gear since that is how our set up was designed. Our other trip videos (see our Utah Overland series) are a better example of overlanding.

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  3 года назад +2

      The lift is a 2.5" spacer lift + some stiffer coils in the rear. Total we gained about 3" because we were losing most of our ground clearance in the rear due to our rooftop tent & gear weighing down the rear end.
      In terms of what to do first, I would say take the stock RAV4 out on the trails & see what you need first! It really depends on what kind of off-roading & camping you do. For Dijana and I, we were mostly focused on doing easy off road trails to find secluded campsites, so we did the roof rack & roof top tent first. After almost a year with stock suspension we decided the lift was needed next. We are still on the stock TRD wheels / tires, but planning on upgrading to a new set up soon.
      Cheers!

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  3 года назад +1

    What lift kit are you running besides the rear spring? How’s the ride?

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  3 года назад

      We have the Rough Country 2.5" spacer lift + the RNOFIT/Dendoff stiffer coils. The ride is a bit stiffer, but I really don't mind. The extra clearance has definitely been worth it.

    I have been trying to find out how much the roof of the RAV4 can hold. Message boards say up to 500 or so lbs when at rest. Toyota dealers don’t seem to know the answer and just say the max is 176lbs per the owners manual, regardless of driving or at rest. Do you have any info or verbiage on this that says otherwise?

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 года назад +1

      Not 100% sure, though we have had our rooftop tent for a few years now and it has been wonderful. No issues, though we do have a FrontRunner rack that it is mounted to, that is capable of holding 600+ lbs. The roof itself does not seem to have any issues with the weight of the tent & us two people in it. The 176lbs is definitely at rest, as there are a ton of RAV4 owners with rooftop tents and no one has had any issues that I am aware of (even on stock crossbars, though I would recommend aftermarket platform rack instead)

    • @LunarLanderXplor
      @LunarLanderXplor  2 года назад

      The iKamper is a wonderful rooftop tent. Super durable, reliable, fast to set up, and functional. We have camped in high wind, snow, rain, etc and never had any issues. Compared to soft-shell rooftop tents, it will do better in rough conditions.

      @@LunarLanderXplor Anytime! I didn't want to be critical but I did have to adjust my volume because the music was much louder than the voice and if someone doesn't say anything you may not notice.
      Besides that, and I don't know if you have done it, but have you considered giving us a over view of your equipment, what you take with you? Thanks!! We usually camp in public land areas, generally National Forests or BLM (bureau of land management). Within National Forests, there are forest roads that can be accessed by the public, and in most cases dispersed camping is allowed. Always good to check specific regulations for the areas you plan to explore. Once we pick an area, we use Google Maps to map out a few potential routes & then go explore and camp!

      We are currently on the 18" wheels that came with the TRD RAV4 (not 19"). The TRD also came with AT tires which have been pretty good for the past year. We are going to upgrade to larger tires and smaller wheels soon, but the stock TRD set up has been great so far.
