Haha off camera the lathe did throw a log at my head but didn’t do any damage I just thought the thumbnail would be funny 😂 got a bruised thumb and a stiff index finger from a chisel smacking my hand it’s why I started recording thought if I’m gonna hurt myself might as well show you guys 😂
@@barrovianmade I only use hand tools for my woodwork so fortunately it's extremely difficult to get kickback from a hand saw. I did slip and nearly saw my finger off once though. 😅
By the way, the best woodturners to watch on youtube...in my opinion are, Richard Raffan, jp woodworks and Glen Teagle. You will learn tonnes from Glen in particular. He also makes and sells carbide woodturning tools, not for rip off prices either.
Your thumbnail pic had me prepared for the worst! 😬😆 I had been thinking about getting a little wood lathe. Under this video were suggestions for several other wood turning vids I’m going to check out, but I don’t think they’ll be half as entertaining as this one! Excellent first project!
Thought the thumbnail would be funny haha I’ve wanted one for ages but never justified the cost since it wouldn’t be a tool I used all the time but then my neighbour came along and said £20 and it’s mine so I couldn’t refuse that hahah
Right then mate for my first tip the drive dog at the motor end of the lathe that drives the wood, to take that out the coller that's just behind it should spin off and drive the dog out that should be on a morse taper 1 ,when you center you're wood mark it then use the drive dog and gently hammer the dog into the end of the wood the place olin the lathe you won't have to put as much tension on the tailstock ,as for working to a center use the pating tool that the thin blade sharpened to a point this could go on forever ,take you're time and hold the tool firmly and go gently into the wood the softer the wood the better to learn on some hardwood need specific tools and methods
Thank you! I never thought about taking the drive dog out and centring it that way that’s so much more easier instead of trying to light it up and pushing it in with the tail stock
May I suggest you go get some professional training, a day with someone who knows what they are doing or watch a video or two from people who know what they are doing. Try finding a local shop that sells lathes as they may have someone to guide you. Watching this made me think you are a danger to yourself and any body who does not know better. Turn the lathe off before measuring with callipers, so you are having fun and learning, well its your life!
there are many u tube videos for beging wood turners, brian haven, the wyoming wood turner, learning to turn with sam are a couple I can think of. the file may not be straight because the tang of the file may be bent, they bend easy. good luck
I’m gonna have to watch some videos I think I really want to try some bowl turning but will need a bowl gouge and a Chuck had alittle look online and looks like a chuck would cost me £70 to £120 so I should have plenty of time to watch some videos and get my self up to speed while I’m saving up for one 😂
Thank you off camera I’m still struggling working up to a shoulder not sure if I’m using the right chisel for the job but it seems to want to pull into the shoulder and skip
Go watch some others on here we all got start somewhere I got the same lathe and even seen Paul sellers useing one I am going go to a Woodturning association hopefully be people there been doing this along time I would say it’s a deaf trap they ain’t much different to the later model except on the newer bigger models you got levers instead of useing spanner’s and I think you can change those I brought a second one of these lathes because it was cheap and had a chuck and 4 like new Robert sorby lathe chisels I was told not worth buying all the expensive gear then finding it’s not what you want to continue with and you end up selling all at a loss so watch some other on here and don’t be put off all got start somewhere and it’s not easy to find people hands on to teach you there are some courses I seen but what you really going to learn in a day and usually miles away and very expensive
I love the learning process of just getting stuck in and having ago been looking at some chucks and tools and it looks like I’m going to have to save up! Didn’t realise how expensive chucks were
Looks like a fucking deathtrap that old lathe. I'm selling my small axminster lathe, since i bought a new one 2 weeks ago. Its only a year and a bit old. Comes with a chuck for turning bowls. I was selling it for £100. Seeing as you lost your job, and if you can pick it up from london, you can have it.
Thank you I appreciate but I’m abit far away from London and my car has a cheap dodgy wheel bearing in it so I don’t wanna do any motorway driving really appreciate the offer though that’s really nice of you
I can only see two comments from you in this video my comment section settings are completely open so everything and anything you post should be there I know sometimes RUclips auto removes comments but I have that turned off so should still be there
Hands up if the thumbnail got you. 🙋♂

It got me good! 😆🤣👍

I almost choked on my coffee
Whoops
I would call it a banjo keep going mate you're doing well
Thank you!

I’ll have to check them channels out and see if I can pick anything up from it

Definitely hard to pass on that! Can’t wait to see what the wood turning journey has in store for us! 👍
i am picking up my first lathe on Saturday, 2nd hand one ;-)

Don't use the side of the wheel to sharpen anything bud.
I know it’s frowned upon but I don’t have a stone to flatten my wheel and I was only using very light pressure
@@barrovianmade subbed btw 👍
Thank you!
So anywho I was just given this lathe…
Hahaha
What would you call this? Tool rest, its a tool rest mate. looks like a decent first go of it - better than my first attempt anyways
Thank you off camera I’m still struggling working up to a shoulder not sure if I’m using the right chisel for the job but it seems to want to pull into the shoulder and skip
They call it a Banjo, no joke but I dont know why.
A banjo huh? 😂is that referring to the tool rest thing? That’s an odd one haha
The tool rest is just a tool rest. The thing that goes across the bed (those 2 round bars) is called the banjo....

Keep grinding
What happened to my other comment, the one where I offered advice?

Clickbait thumbnail 👎👎👎👎
Have to get the views somehow haha all my injuries were off camera as soon as I turned it on nothing happened
Not trying to put you off but I don't want you to maim yourself and it's easily done with power tools!
Not if you use them properly. Granted, many people don't and they then earn the nicknames "Stumpy" or "Dearly Departed".
I have experience with metal lathes and mills so I know the basic safety stuff hopefully all limbs stay intact
