There is always someone who does it better than you. capt eddie castelin is such a guy, but he wants you to be better than he was and takes the time to show you how. He has extensive YT videos on everything from Roughing Gouges (the one you used here) to Skews. How to sharpen them and how to use them. Hi is a bit of a legend in the woodturning arena but has suffered medically so is no longer able to have his shop. He is Well worth a look if you are unsure of anything
Great video; I really enjoyed watching this.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Make sure you use some stickers (bits of even sized wood) between each plank and ratchet them together as tight as you can across the planks. If you try and dry them fast in your house they will twist and warp. So you can reduce that by ratcheting them. You’re basically forcing them to dry straight like the opposite of steam bending.
Ratchet straps sounds like a plan I just have some weights on them at the moment but I doubt they are doing much I’ll grab some straps and tie them down!
A trick I learned before I got a jointer (From Screwfix), was that if both sides aren't straight, screw on something you know to be flat on on side - Like MDF, and put that against your fence. That then gives you a straight edge - Flip it over, take off the MDF - Boom, Parallel. Saw it on youtube when folk are squaring up logs and stuff, but works fine on reclaimed beams. Bit of a faff, but hey - If it works!
Why tf did I not think of that that’s such a simple and effective solution to the headache I had 😂 I was busting out the hand planes and everything and I have loads of flat plywood and mdf laying around definitely going to do this next time in cutting up a beam
I would just make sure that you clamp those tight and maybe put a few more calls spread out so that they drive flat otherwise they will start to warp and you’ll get even less wood
I’ll Chuck some clamps on them tonight thanks for the tip
Also…. I’ve been watching from the start of this channel and the new Thumbnails are everything I/we hoped you wouldn’t fall foul of. I suppose it’s all a learning curve and ultimately the dream I imagine is to build a way to make a living from social media and woodworking……but please don’t stray from who you are. Build the following as naturally as possible, as the saying goes ‘build it, they will come! You don’t need AI Thumbnails mate or gimmicks, just do you and you’ll be good. 👍 😊 All positive mate, keep the content coming, Jace you got the gift 🎁 function set up on this channel, where subscribers can buy you a “coffee” etc? If not, switch it on also, get Patreon sorted, I’d buy you a coffee for each video you do! 😊
Thank you! I’m not too keen on the thumbnails either I don’t feel they represent the videos very well but I’ve been assured they are more clickable so i thought I’d give them ago and if I see no difference which so far I haven’t seen a difference then I’ll go back to creating my own thank you for the support I’ll always do me in my videos I just have to package them better to reach a wider audience think i might need better lighting and stuff to get a quality thumbnail but like you said it’s all a learning curve!
@ you can never go too far wrong if you be yourself in most facets of life mate.
Great video mate! Seems like you were dealt a raw deal recently with work so really hoping it works out for you. Watched for ages but only able to comment now as started my own channel. Best of luck! 👍🏻
Do not dry this timber in your bedroom ! Get yourself a cheap chinese diesel heater for your shed and dry it in there.
Never heard of a diesel heater? There’s not a naked flame in one is there? I feel that could be dangerous in a dusty shed
Yes, it does have a flame, but it's just like a gas boiler internal flame. Check them out.
@ Do they? The one I have is basically a tiny diesel engine with a fan. No flame at all. Worst part is the clicking of the fuel pump is a little annoying :D
Great video though, please don’t get me wrong. 😊
Get some outfeed Rollers?? Oh and face mask 😷
Tell you what that’s a good idea that I for some reason I didn’t think of 😂 havent got space to store them so I’d have to make a flat pack stand I can use and easily store away when cutting beams
You’re so good at explaining how to do bow-ties! I’ve seen your other video showing how to. They’re so beautiful! And as for the weird comments- I guess some people don’t have a good sense of humor and don’t realize your videos aren’t just educational, but entertaining as well! 👍 Keep up the great work! I’m looking forward to what you have in store for us! 🌟🤘
Thank you! Plenty of ideas in store just struggling atm working on a project right now that’s doing my head in glue isn’t drying properly so keeps falling apart think it’s the cold weather or something the woods been treated with (something pine from old cladding my uncle’s gave me) hopefully I figure it out soon and get it posted
Haha some of those comments 😂 some people just don't get humour. Cracking bow tie by the way 👍
Thank you! Yeah think I had a lot of new watchers from the wood turning community that didn’t quite get the humour haha
I found why it's called a banjo, its to do with the nut and bolt that's attached to the toolrest and the ways.
Think I understand haha
Sorry I’m late, but this is a wonderful table! I like that it’s unusual and quirky! Watching the top being spun into place, I was wondering if a lazy susan would help with sanding round objects. In any case- well done! 👏🤘
Thank you! I actually have a lazy Susan might have to give it a go!
This time I will use WoodPrix instructions to make it.
???
You seem like a thoroughly good egg. Please take care of your lungs. xx
Thank you! I know I really want some actual dust collection but I have started using Hoover attachments on my sander and wearing masks while cutting or Atleast I’m trying to make a habit of it now my little hover just makes my table saw and surface planer clog so I’d need a beefer set up for dust collection
@barrovianmade I splashed out 80 quid on the Evolution vac as I use a tiny summer house for projects. Also some compatible hepaflo bags. I realise times are tough so hopefully things will pick up soon for you so you can invest. The vac is really good for the price and has made a difference. Hope 2025 brings you some better luck!
It's usually that you need to sharpen the tablesaw blade and it is actually more likely that the teeth will need to be cleaned as when you use them alot the teeth have a tendency to get covered by the sap ththat'in the wood. Before you shapen the Blade try cleaning the teeth with an old toothbrush and soapy water if this doesn't work try using some of your partners nail varnish remover. It works great and will save you some money in the future
I have some rubbing alcohol I’ll soak some of my old blades and see if I can sharpen them too might even make a video of me trying to do it thanks for the advice!
I almost choked on my coffee
Whoops
Best looking mushroom I've ever seen Travis
Hahaha thank you
Its a great build, but it always amazes me with the prices. I dont for a second think that anyone here in sweden would buy a table for this money, even though I feel its well worth it when its custom made :D
Yeah I imagine with ikea being based in Sweden it would be hard competing against there prices. At the end of the day handmade and factory made are completely different markets it’s all down to what the customer wants
Not a bad project dude! Let us know if anything happens to it after the moisture levels will go down. All the best man!
Thank you, since I’ve been storing in the house some of the cracks have gotten bigger but everything is still sitting flat so hopefully in time I’ll just have some cool rustic clacks in it and it stays flat but only time will tell
Wonderful table! It does look like a mushroom! It would be perfect to put your drink and snacks while watching a Lord of the Rings marathon! 😆 Also, your wooden logs needed to dry out more. All in all, this is awesome!!!
Thank you! They had been drying for about a year so thought they would be good by now but it’s been in the house since making it and more cracks have opened up so it’s obviously still drying hopefully another year inside a warm house will dry them out more
Neat little table, well done 👏
Thank you!
U can use a wire brush in Ur drill to help bring back the live edge, it removes the soft bits if wood
I did think of that but just decided on the smooth feel to it
Put it in the oven @100c for 1.5 hrs that will help the drying process.
It won’t fit in my oven and I think the mother would kill me if I did 😂
It's a nice table when you have no mush room
Hahahaha thank you
I'm really liking these videos, you come across as a really fun-gi 😅
Go watch some others on here we all got start somewhere I got the same lathe and even seen Paul sellers useing one I am going go to a Woodturning association hopefully be people there been doing this along time I would say it’s a deaf trap they ain’t much different to the later model except on the newer bigger models you got levers instead of useing spanner’s and I think you can change those I brought a second one of these lathes because it was cheap and had a chuck and 4 like new Robert sorby lathe chisels I was told not worth buying all the expensive gear then finding it’s not what you want to continue with and you end up selling all at a loss so watch some other on here and don’t be put off all got start somewhere and it’s not easy to find people hands on to teach you there are some courses I seen but what you really going to learn in a day and usually miles away and very expensive
I love the learning process of just getting stuck in and having ago been looking at some chucks and tools and it looks like I’m going to have to save up! Didn’t realise how expensive chucks were
By the way, the best woodturners to watch on youtube...in my opinion are, Richard Raffan, jp woodworks and Glen Teagle. You will learn tonnes from Glen in particular. He also makes and sells carbide woodturning tools, not for rip off prices either.
I’ll have to check them channels out and see if I can pick anything up from it
Looks like a fucking deathtrap that old lathe. I'm selling my small axminster lathe, since i bought a new one 2 weeks ago. Its only a year and a bit old. Comes with a chuck for turning bowls. I was selling it for £100. Seeing as you lost your job, and if you can pick it up from london, you can have it.
Thank you I appreciate but I’m abit far away from London and my car has a cheap dodgy wheel bearing in it so I don’t wanna do any motorway driving really appreciate the offer though that’s really nice of you
@barrovianmade no worries bro. Keep grinding
So anywho I was just given this lathe…
Hahaha
I would call it a banjo keep going mate you're doing well
Thank you!
Right then mate for my first tip the drive dog at the motor end of the lathe that drives the wood, to take that out the coller that's just behind it should spin off and drive the dog out that should be on a morse taper 1 ,when you center you're wood mark it then use the drive dog and gently hammer the dog into the end of the wood the place olin the lathe you won't have to put as much tension on the tailstock ,as for working to a center use the pating tool that the thin blade sharpened to a point this could go on forever ,take you're time and hold the tool firmly and go gently into the wood the softer the wood the better to learn on some hardwood need specific tools and methods
Thank you! I never thought about taking the drive dog out and centring it that way that’s so much more easier instead of trying to light it up and pushing it in with the tail stock
there are many u tube videos for beging wood turners, brian haven, the wyoming wood turner, learning to turn with sam are a couple I can think of. the file may not be straight because the tang of the file may be bent, they bend easy. good luck
I’m gonna have to watch some videos I think I really want to try some bowl turning but will need a bowl gouge and a Chuck had alittle look online and looks like a chuck would cost me £70 to £120 so I should have plenty of time to watch some videos and get my self up to speed while I’m saving up for one 😂
May I suggest you go get some professional training, a day with someone who knows what they are doing or watch a video or two from people who know what they are doing. Try finding a local shop that sells lathes as they may have someone to guide you. Watching this made me think you are a danger to yourself and any body who does not know better. Turn the lathe off before measuring with callipers, so you are having fun and learning, well its your life!
Appreciate the concern I’ve got some videos to watch
They call it a Banjo, no joke but I dont know why.
A banjo huh? 😂is that referring to the tool rest thing? That’s an odd one haha
The tool rest is just a tool rest. The thing that goes across the bed (those 2 round bars) is called the banjo....
Don't use the side of the wheel to sharpen anything bud.
I know it’s frowned upon but I don’t have a stone to flatten my wheel and I was only using very light pressure
@@barrovianmade subbed btw 👍
Thank you!
Clickbait thumbnail 👎👎👎👎
Have to get the views somehow haha all my injuries were off camera as soon as I turned it on nothing happened
What would you call this? Tool rest, its a tool rest mate. looks like a decent first go of it - better than my first attempt anyways
Thank you off camera I’m still struggling working up to a shoulder not sure if I’m using the right chisel for the job but it seems to want to pull into the shoulder and skip
What happened to my other comment, the one where I offered advice?
I can only see two comments from you in this video my comment section settings are completely open so everything and anything you post should be there I know sometimes RUclips auto removes comments but I have that turned off so should still be there
Not trying to put you off but I don't want you to maim yourself and it's easily done with power tools!
Not if you use them properly. Granted, many people don't and they then earn the nicknames "Stumpy" or "Dearly Departed".
I have experience with metal lathes and mills so I know the basic safety stuff hopefully all limbs stay intact
Sounds like they might have had other plans in mind. Perhaps the boss on holiday didn’t want a hire. Sounds like a shit company and you sound like a conscientious and hard worker. Their loss, I’m sure someone else will value you.
Thank you I really pride myself on my work ethic and hopefully something comes my way soon
Lovely table nice to see some one building and putting together 😊👍👍
Thank you!
Sucks that your in a position you are, but good luck to the future. Kee up the grind
Thank you hopefully something comes up soon!
🤣🤣🤣 How can anyone not but love this channel!!!
Hahaha thank you!
You should make it your channel intro video. That's really good. You've got an option like this in you creator studio on desktop computer.
Yeah I think my intro video is just an old video of mine I’ll have to swap it out for this I wasn’t even ment to make this video public was ment to be unlisted was going to use it to run some ads for the channel but having problems with getting them running at the moment having to verify some stuff and let them do there checks 🙄😂
@@barrovianmadeha I know what you mean. Registration and verification can be a pain but when it's done it's done. I hope it'll all go well for you dude. We are all currently struggling with views 🤷♂️ not exactly sure why but I hope it'll get better at some point.
Hands up if the thumbnail got you. 🙋♂
Haha off camera the lathe did throw a log at my head but didn’t do any damage I just thought the thumbnail would be funny 😂 got a bruised thumb and a stiff index finger from a chisel smacking my hand it’s why I started recording thought if I’m gonna hurt myself might as well show you guys 😂
It got me good! 😆🤣👍
@@barrovianmade I only use hand tools for my woodwork so fortunately it's extremely difficult to get kickback from a hand saw. I did slip and nearly saw my finger off once though. 😅
😂
Little promo vid I made was ment to be unlisted but it’s public so thought I might as well leave it up 😂 trying to make a ads account so I can push my videos and channel out to a larger audience
Hi from USA. Happy to see somebody putting it together from the beginning. I'm a 64 year old retiree, also working with reclaimed wood. Thinking about starting RUclips again. Thanks for showing the struggle. Good on you man.
Thank you trying my best to make this into a full time thing since I’m in love with the craft and making videos
Your thumbnail pic had me prepared for the worst! 😬😆 I had been thinking about getting a little wood lathe. Under this video were suggestions for several other wood turning vids I’m going to check out, but I don’t think they’ll be half as entertaining as this one! Excellent first project!
Thought the thumbnail would be funny haha I’ve wanted one for ages but never justified the cost since it wouldn’t be a tool I used all the time but then my neighbour came along and said £20 and it’s mine so I couldn’t refuse that hahah
Definitely hard to pass on that! Can’t wait to see what the wood turning journey has in store for us! 👍
i am picking up my first lathe on Saturday, 2nd hand one ;-)
With the finger grooves and the router bit burning them, I'd personally make it a contrasting / unique feature by masking off the sides of the board and lightly burning the whole finger groove with a blow torch until it's black all the way along. Once you pull off the masking, which could be a sacrificial piece of thin wood or something similar, it will contrast nicely with the lighter wood and make it very obvious at a glance where your fingers need to go when rushing around in a kitchen. Since you're now out of a job and need the money you could also look into techniques and home made equipment for compressing sawdust into fire bricks for wood burning stoves etc and sell them once you've made enough. They wouldn't sell for a lot of money but it's pocket money and an extra product to catch onto algorithms etc on social media, plus more environmentally friendly for some people as opposed to buying seasoned logs every year. Lastly, I'm not sure where you're from in the country so it might not help but you could have a look into something called "Red Brick Markets". It's essentially a warehouse in Liverpool and one in Birmingham where they rent out various sized shelving / space for very small businesses to put whatever hand made products they have and the staff there do all the other work, they advertise the place, sell the items etc. All you have to do is pay a very cheap rent on one of their size options, stock the shelves with anything you've made, tell them the prices you want and they do the rest. As far as I'm aware they're quite popular and don't even charge commission per sale or anything like that. Worth a look if you're close to either city and I believe they plan to open more.
Website doesn't show up as hyperlink, maybe if you add the full link it will. Would be easier to access, currently at least on mobile I need to type it in
Thank you! Never noticed I’ve changed it all now
Ah mate, so sorry for your situation. Something will come up, you're too good a guy not to get on. Your website looks top notch 🤞🤞 for you there.
Thank you I appreciate it! Hopefully things will pick up soon
