But far as his personal & vulnerable songwriting along with the melodic soundscape that he and Dot da Genius created it's literally the starting point for the new wave. Definitely not the first people to "talk about emotions on tracks". Respect to what their doing, especially bringing that type of hip-hop to more people. But there are a slew of other artists way before these dudes that were making personal emotional tracks.

@Christopher Reid I don't think anyone is "killing hip-hop". You wanna talk about the mainstream being flooded with garbage? Sure. But there is and always has been a space for all types of hip-hop. Just cuz you don't fuck with it doesn't mean it isn't hip-hop. There's room for everything. If you don't fuck with it, don't listen to it. But that doesn't mean it's not Hip-Hop, or that it's killing Hip-Hop.
Also,
Take something like Biggie's 'Suicidal Thoughts', Too $hort's 'The Ghetto', even Grandmaster Flash's 'The Message'. These are all tracks that cover depressing shit. Yet they are all Hip-Hop. Not only that, these tracks made monumental marks on the genre.
"Emo rap" is not songs like dear mama and other song where rappers express emotions. Its the rap/rock style. Kid cudi, xxxtentacion, wifi, trippie redd, juice world are "emo rappers" remember back in the day theyd call kids emo for wearing all black, listening to "suicidal music" cut themselves etc. Everyones emotional but they were "emos" emo rap is those kids rap style not the normal rap if you get what im saying
@@KushKillz Prince Lance Almighty I feel what you're saying, and I think I understand, but what about those that dive in and out of emo stuff? They may not commit largely to that style, but they put out content that personifies those same feelings and themes. They may not be considered an "emo rapper", but they have songs that could be considered "emo rap".
For example take Eyedea and one of his early songs 'Shadows Have Shadows'(from way back in 2001). I think it's a great example of a song that fits the type of music we're talking about. Though Eyedea has other tracks that cover emo themes, he isn't limited to it. Even on his last album he had tracks like "By the Throat" and "Burn Fetish", which are even closer to the emo rap/rock style you mentioned.
There are also artists like Grieves, Atmosphere, Input, Cage, Chris Orrick, etc. etc. that aren't exclusively rapping about morbid emo stuff, but definitely have multiple if not many songs that fit that style.
But I guess you might be talking more about the style of sound more than the content itself though.
If so, what about Sadistik? He doesn't really have a "rock" sound and is sonically more Hip-Hop, but his content is just as emo as these other guys you mentioned.
If we're gonna put rappers in boxes, I'd go ahead and say Sadistik is an "emo rapper". The majority of his work(literally almost everything), has really dark and graphic imagery, and themes of self loathing that are very much "emo". His first album is 'The Balancing Act' (which btw dropped in 2008). That album along with each following release is a well crafted, super lyrical project that is bursting with emo content. Self depracation, relationship traumas, self mutilation, deep depression and emotional extremes.
With that considered would you consider Sadistik an artist who does "emo rap"? If so he's definitely a prime example of someone who was doing it before any of these dudes.

Atmosphere “God Loves Ugly” one of the first Emo raps album, early 2000’s. Even before in the 90’s with his debut. Him, Em, Joe Budden was one of the first quote un quote “Emo rap” then Kanye came and he was vulnerable in his raps, but Kid Cudi and kanye with 808’s and man on the moon changed hip hop forever. Also Lil Wayne with tha carter 3. Them 3 mixed together is basically the sound of Hip Hop now. Drake is also a part of that mix, though he’s not as dark but he’s still part of that early “Emo rap” wave.
